Workgroup Is Not Accessible - You Might Not Have Permission To Use This Network Resource
Sep 17, 2012
I have a network with aprox 150 workstations (90% windows XP profesional, 10% Windows7 32 or 64 bit), and I receive from time to time this message ONLY on windows XP workstations:" Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource" All the time I could access the various workgroup computers by entering their IP like \192.168.1.5 or \mikepc All the time i can ping any of the workstation without any problem. All the time using Search computers on the network I find computer name.

My network contains:
-Netgear router 1
-Dell Dimension 9150 - Windows XP pro SP3 (this machine, connected to router 1 using a pair of netgear powerline adapters
-2 x Dell Inspiron laptops - Windows 7 Home 64bit (wireless)
-iMac - OSX Snow Leopard (wireless)
-Apple Time Capsule (network drive)
-Several misc items (phones, iPod/iPad, Vodaphone sure signal, PS3)
-Network printer
-Netgear router 2 (used as wireless access point the otherside of the house, connected using a pair of netgear powerline adapters) CURRENTLY DISABLED
None of the 4 computers can see each other, but they can all print and access the Time Capsule. Now I've made sure they're all on the same workgroup and that relevant services for sharing files are running. When I try to "View workgroup computers" on the XP machine I get the error attached.

I have the network up and running fine except that the Windows 7 computer cannot open any files on the xp computer. It says that it doesn't have permission and the check with the network administrator. There are no passwords set up on either computer and both run as administrator. The Windows 7 Computer is hard wired to a Linksys router, and the XP uses a wireless N adapter to connect. The windows 7 computer can navigate the xp computer, it just can't open any of the files with any program. From the XP computer I can access and open anything on the Windows 7 computer?

Sharing works fine on all computers for files and printers, however the DVD/CD Rom drives are not accessible.Sharing is enabled on all of these devices. When we try to access these DVD/CD Rom drives we get the following error message:Windows cannot access //computer name/resource name. You do not have permission to access //computer name/resource name. Contact your network administrator to request access.

I was trying to connect my computers on a home network so that I can access either one via the other. When I try however I get the message:
"***-PC is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
long failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a police restriction has been enforced.
That is the message from computer 1 to computer 2.
Computer 2 gives me the message:
Windows cannot access \***-PC
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

We have a network based from a server where data is stored, such as Quickbooks files, and an employee has a laptop instead of a workspace. He needs to be able to access the Quickbooks file from his computer- we are currently using Remote Desktop Connection, however it is proving to be quite complicated for him and I need to know how to set it up. I know how to set up Quickbooks and all- the issue is with adding his laptop to the workgroup.

I have a fairly simple wireless home network. My main desktop machine is running XP Pro, and our family laptop is running XP Home. The laptop shares the My Documents folder for 2 of the 3 profiles. One of them works as it should. It is visible and accessible on the main desktop machine, but the other share is visible but NOT accessible. I get the following error message when I try to explore it from the main desktop machine:
<the share name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied.
I'm not sure when this started, but remember that the other folder being shared is working just fine. I've double and triple checked the settings, share names, and basically anything I could possibly mistype. I've restarted both PCs, and refreshed the network explorer via both the file explorer and My Computer dialog. The My Computer dialog refresh the shares for some reason that the explorer wouldn't, but I'm still denied access to that one share on the laptop.

I have a router-based home network in which the desktop running XP media center is connected by cable to the router. There are 2 wireless laptops, one running XP home and the other Windows 7.The laptops can talk to each other, and the desktop can talk to the laptops. But I cannot access the desktop from the laptops. I can see the (shared) folders, but when I click on one I get the message: "You might not have permission to use this network resource..Not enough server storage is available to process this command." One solution suggested in several places is to change the IRPStackSize to 15. However, if I start the desktop in safe mode with networking, I can access the files.I can also access the machine using remote desktop. One extra frustration is that this is a problem that has happened relatively recently. It used to work OK.

Internet access is working fine, however I cannot get my computers to work on the network therefore cant share any files or play any network games. The router is set up as DHCP server therefore IPs are automatically assigned, this is setup on the PCs and the router. The work group is also set. Exactly same settings basically as my old router which worked fine but wont on this one! I have 3 wired PCs and a wireless laptop. 2 PCs are windows XP the other is Windows 7 and the laptop is windows 7. The wireless win7 laptop will recognize my win7 wired PC and vice versa and can share everything without problems, but they wont have anything to do with the wired winxp PCs, on top of that the 2 winxp wont recognize each other either so don't think its anything platform specific. I have also tried setting up static IPs for each computer - still no joy. This is a brand new D-Link DIR-655 Rev B1 firmware 2.00

I recently change routers to a Linksys E3000 wireless router from a Uverese 2wire residential gateway and all worked well for a short time nothing changed however when I go to view network devices from Win7,Vista or XP computers the network devices are no longer there. when I shut down and reboot the router and switches I still cannot see these devices, however when I hook up my old 2wire router I see my devices again. Even when I reconnect to the E3000 all the devices can be viewed for a few hours. Changing routers resets something but maybe overloads the linksys E3000 after a few hours? maybe this E3000 is just defective?
When I view a network map in Network & Internet all the devices appear in the map The configuration is Linksys E3000 router with two (2) 8 port Trendnet gigabyte switches and One (1) 8 port Trendnet Poe 10/100 switch. They are chained router to 8 port gig to 8 port gig to 8 port Poe 10/100. Prior to this I had the router to each switch separately - - this does not seem to matter works the same either way
Devices attached - Network printer,XP desktop, Vista Desktop, NAS, WDTVlive media player, Roku, Home automation controller, IP touch screen for the automation, security DVR (wireless devices are all ok Win7 laptop, Vista laptop, Ipad)seldom are more than 3 devices being used at one time light traffic.)

I work in a school department and wanted to hardwire two computers in my class using a workgroup switch. I only had one data port in my class. The tech guy told me the switch could cause the entire network to crash. Is that true? I thought a switch was just a passthrough device.

I just got my dad's old notebook (VAIO VPC F223FB) which is better than my older one. So, I did a backup and then managed to clean install a Windows 7 Professional x64.At first I had a problem with the drivers, because the internet wasn't connecting and the USB ports weren't detecting my External Drive. So, I tested other USB port and got it. Installed the drivers and I could connect to the wireless network. But it doesn't detect the ethernet cable! And I want it detecting because then it's faster. I already tried downloading the Ethernet Controller driver. At first, I downloaded through Sony's support site but it didn't recognize the driver. Now, it recognizes but still doesn't connect it. And when I tried Solving Connection Problems, it said the network gateway was accessible but Windows can't receive Internet network traffic.

I am experiencing one, possibly two problems with the X3000, firmware release v1.0.03:
1. When enabling guest mode, the internal network is not accessible via WLAN even for clients NOT connected via guest mode but regularly: Even non-guests but regularly connected clients can't access any internal IP but the router itself. netscan shows only the very client's IP and the router's. Only after switching guest mode entirely off, regularly connected clients can access interal IP again. netscan correctly shows the whole network. Obviously a firmware bug. BTW: Clients connected via cable do not experience this problems.
2. I am not sure about this, but after using the firmware built in "Reboot" button, the router reboots correctly. But for some reason, it is instable afterwards. It is operational for a few seconds but then reboots again. It keeps cycling. I could stop it by switching the router off and on again.

We received an ASA5520-K8 through Cisco's Loan program so we could demo it as a replacement for our aging Cisco 3005 VPN appliances. Given that we are a non Cisco shop (except for specific appliances like concentrators and wireless access points), I don't have a great deal of experience with Cisco gear.I started to set to setup the appliance this morning but immediately ran into issues. The 5520 doesnt seem to be acting as a DHCP server, and worse yet, I can't access the unit even if I hard code the IP on the PC being used for configuration. I have to say that I feel kinda stupid having to post this, since I actually followed the documentation avaiable for this menial task and I fully expect the problem to be a simple one. Namely, I am using two specific sources of info for connections.

My router is a Dir-601 n150.Would the router possible be causing this problem? Some people say the router could possible be causing this problem. On my desktop I'm running, Windows Vista Home premium. On my laptop, I'm running Windows 7 Home premium. Both are set for Workgroup, file sharing is turned on, password protection is turned off.I have file sharing on both set to Guest. I have printer sharing turn on, which works fine.On both computers the only user is the Administrator, with this I set file sharing to Guest on both. When I use laptop to access files on my desktop, The public I can access with no problem. When I try to access the users folder I get an error message: Windows cannot access\ mane of computer-PC\Users/You do not have permission to access\ name of computer-PC Users. I want to share the My Documents folder from an XP machine with ONLY one user (the administrator) on a networked Win 7 machine. I have turned off simple sharing on the XP machine. I hate XP!! So complicated to do anything. Anyway, under security, I have tried share this folder, and not to share folder. I have gone into Advanced and messed around with permissions, taking out Everyone, using Admin only, using Network. At one point I ended up not being able to access My Documents on the local computer and had to jump through many hoops to change ownership and disable read only so that the user could use her own files! The problem is, under Advanced in the permissions area, I cannot see the users on the remote pc to choose which one should be allowed access. how to actually find a particular user on the Win 7 pc and give ONLY that user permission to read (not to change) the files in My Documents on the XP pc.

All I want to do is to share a couple of Folders, My Documents and Downloads, between two PC's on a Workgroup network.Networking is not my strongest point but up until now I have managed quite successfully. The setup is :-
1st PC is Mike-Laptoppc is on a Wireless connection to an ADSL+2 router/modem.
2nd PC is a Desktop Alexs-PC connected via cable to the same router/modem
I can share all the shared folders from the Desktop to the Laptop, but I can only share Media streaming on the Desktop from the Laptop, so I know there is a connection between the two computers. I have now turned off Media streaming to concentrate on just folder sharing.Whenever I try to access the Laptop from the Desktop I get an " Access Denied you do not have permission contact your administrator " box on the desktop.
