Network's Internet Periodically Disconnects
Apr 10, 2012
My internet disconnects every 15 minutes or so for about 10 minutes and it is getting really annoying. It started last night. I installed the HideMyAss add-on for Chrome and I think that may have something to do with it. Since then, I disabled and uninstalled the add-on, yet the issues continue. When I try to open a page with Chrome or Firefox I get these messages:This webpage is not available. The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.I have tried the Chrome recommendations with little success. One more thing, it is not just my computer. Everyone in my house is periodically unable to access the internet. Our service provider is Optimum and we have a Belkin Router. I changed all of the security settings on the router, yet the troubles persist. url...

I'm currently writing this from a laptop. It can access the internet perfectly, with no dropouts and no speed issues. However, my desktop PC is a different story. When I purchased the PC, it came with a standard wireless PCI adapter which really wasn't doing the job. It couldn't pick up my router from just one story above, where my laptop could. I decided to buy a new wireless adapter that would hopefully fit the bill. Unfortunately, again it didn't pick up the router from downstairs. Trying a different tack, I purchased the Netgear WRN2000 as an access point that would increase the range of my router. I connected my PC to this after configuring and all was going well for a while, until now. Now, every 1-2 minutes, the internet will slow to a crawl for 30 seconds or so, and while comparing speeds via the laptop (connected directly to the main router) and via the PC (connected through the extender to the router), the laptop clearly has the speed advantage. This is more noticable when playing games on my PC, such as Call of Duty. Every 1 minute or so, the game becomes unplayable due to lag for around 30 seconds, and sometimes this happens constantly. I'm unable to work out if the WRN2000 has a problem, or if it's interference. I actually tried connecting my PC to my laptop via ethernet, and bridging the 2 connections, which seemed to work for a day or so, but now does not. Also, i'd be willing to purchase a new PCI wireless card if anyone has any recommendations for one that has a strong signal range.

My laptop is having trouble connecting to the internet. Some of the time it is fine, but at other times it will not connect to my home wireless network (or any other open ones I can find) despite the network being in full signal. The only advice offered by the troubleshooter is to reset the wireless router. This does work (but is very irritating to flatmates!) but doesn't prevent the problem recurring. Only my computer has an issue, and sometimes it will manage to connect to the internet by itself, seemingly spontaneously. The laptop is set to connect automatically, and when not working it also does sometimes attempt to connect, (i.e. it says 'connecting') but cuts out again before managing it. The problem can last for a few minutes or several hours.

I have recently added a wifi router to my home network. The connection is from my cable modem to a wired router to the wifi router. Everything on the network works great except when I turn on my cell phone's wifi connection. That disconnects my entire network from the internet and I have to unplug/replug my wired router to get reconnected. If I leave home with my phone and return, leaving the cell's wifi setting on, it reconnects to the network without disrupting the internet connection.

I am running an i7 MSI gt683 with windows 7 with an Intel Centrino Wirelss-N 130. My home wifi connection runs off of comcast on a netgear router, and the wireless connection works on every single device in the house except for my laptop. I can run my ps3, my wii, we have an ipad, all our phones can connect and we have another laptop that connects with no issue. I have updated my drivers for my wireless card to the latest, flushed the ip on my desktop that the modem is connect to a dozen times. The only way to sometimes fix it is to manually log in to my router and release/renew the ip address from there. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. When it does work, it will work for about a week and then stop working for no reason at random times. The errors I keep getting are:Identifying network (which runs infinitely before cycling back to no internet connection)Connected with no internet access.

Rev B, recently updated firmware to 2.10NA hoping to resolve the problem.WIFI is disabled.DHCP is disabled (I run a SBS 2008 server, but for testing i static ally assigned IP info on my test PC and disconnected all other systems including the server). Before updating the firmware, the router would hang for a couple minutes and then be OK for some random period, usually more than a few hours. After updating and resetting to factory defaults, I'm now lucky to get ten minutes of service before it hangs. The "globe" light goes out, blinks yellow and then within 20 seconds or so, goes out for good. At that point I can't even connect to the router's admin login page. I either have to power cycle the router OR the cable modem. I have confirmed it's the 655 by reconnecting my old (and I guess more trusty Linksys WRT54G. Same settings, same WAN MAC and WAN IP, no problems after many hours.

Just installed a DIR-615, not impressed so far I have 3 clients, a Windoze 7 laptop, a Kubuntu workstation (wireless N) and a wireless HP printer. When I enable DHCP reservations and reserve the addresses then save settings the router reboots and when I go back in all info is gone and nothing is reserved. I have been having weird disconnection issues - I lose my internet periodically for no apparent reason so I increased the lease time and am trying to reserve addresses.

I have been having problems with my Internet the past couple weeks. If I am watching a video, it doesn't matter which site, the video will stop and start from the beginning or the video will just stop altogether and I have to refresh the page. Another problem that happens while browsing, it will take about a minute for a page to load. The computer I am using is wired right into the router.
The rest of the family's computers the apple tv and the roku are wireless. I have been hearing complaints from them and have witnessed the laggyness. While streaming videos on the roku or apple tv, the video will stop and say video is not available or no connection. This is what I get from ipconfig/all

Service provider is Charter, modem is a Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 that I bought on my own. We're new to cable internet service, having had slow but reliable DSL up until now.Periodically (3-5 times a day, at least), our internet connection drops. When this happens, the power and wireless lights are on, all other lights are out. The only solution is to unplug, count to 10, and replug the modem. This works, until it happens again.Yesterday, I finally broke down and called Charter after listening to my family complain about how we had traded our "great" DSL service for this "crappy" service (even though the speed difference is supposed to be something like 60x. They checked from their end, said they saw no problem, had me power cycle the modem (d/c coax and power) and said that if it happened again, it was probably the modem

I've been having some issues with my network connectivity for a while now, and I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is. I run a wired connection to an Ethernet port in the wall of my university dorm. I have verified that it is not a global network issue or an ISP issue; this problem only happens on my PC.My network connection drops/disconnects randomly throughout the day. When I say disconnect/drop, I mean that all attempts to ping or access the internet fail. A few minutes pass before the Network and Sharing center task tray icon shows a warning sign saying that my computer could not connect to the internet. This is temporarily fixed by doing an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, but I have to execute these two commands about 2-3 times a day on average.
There is no exact interval between the disconnects, nor does it happen when I am running particular programs. The disconnect happens regardless of what I am doing at the moment (gaming, browsing the internet, leaving the computer idle).A month back, I installed some Windows Updates and suddenly my internet connection was almost completely broken. I was experiencing the same issue, but much more frequently. My internet would die within 10 seconds of executing any download, but Windows wouldn't recognize that something was wrong. At first I thought the ZoneAlarm, Avast!, or the SafeConnect (as required by my university) services were causing trouble but uninstalling/disabling these services did not fix the problem.I also tried reverting to my default ethernet drivers, which did nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled multiple versions of my drivers to no avail. However, the internet worked just fine in Safe Mode with Networking, so I cross-referenced the processes/services running in Safe Mode w/ Networking against my normal startup, guessing something else was at play. After some poking around, I discovered that disabling the Server and Browser services permanently fixed the issue of instant connection death. But the initial problem I described still remains;random, less frequent internet connection drops.

I am experiencing random disconnects from the internet -- they have been occurring about 1-3 times per day, although I've just had four in the last 20 minutes.
ISP: Wow! Cable - 15/1Mbps
Modem: Motorola SB6121 (new)
Router: D-Link DIR-655 (new) Firmware 2.00NA
When the internet disconnects:
- Both the LAN & the WAN are affected, but I do not lose any wireless connectivity with the router itself.
- I am able to log into the router wirelessly but cannot access the modem.
- If I plug my laptop directly into the modem, I can connect to the internet.
- When I reboot (using the on/off switch on the surge protector), everything comes back up.
There are a couple of other wireless routers nearby with fairly strong signals, but they appear to be running on different channels.
My phones are DECT 6.0, so there shouldn't be any interference problems with those.
I've been poking around this forum, and have already made some setting changes that seem to be consistently recommended:
- Ensured DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
- Turned off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
- Turned off Advanced DNS Services
- Turned on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
- Ensured devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
- Using mixed G and N signal mode
- My security setting is WPA-Personal. WPA2-PSK

I have a situation that i would like a more experienced opinion on. We have 2 desktop computers in the house and do have a wireless router. Both of our computers are wired to the router, the wireless is generally only used for our iPad, and we have cable internet from Comcast. Whenever my fiance connects to World of Warcraft our internet disconnects and she needs to re-set the modem and the router. It is worth noting that not just the wireless disconnects but internet access all together is gone. What is likely the cause of this? I tend to lean toward a bad router but it only happens with this one program, so far, so i am also concerned it could be some sort of malicious virus/spyware.

Our telephone point is downstairs in the lounge. We then have a long lead which we have run from the Eircom point in the lounge to upstairs into our son's room. This lead has a splitter on the end which is in our sons room. We have the Eircom modem connected to the splitter and to our sons computer, which is a Dell XPS 630 and which has no built in modem. The cordless telephone is connected to the other port on the splitter. The splitter has two ports one for telephone one for broadband. We also have another PC and two laptops. The second PC and the laptops are wireless.
The problem seems to happen when our son is in the middle of a game (he's a bit World of Warcraft gamer!) and I then use the phone and he loses the connection and then there's troublWe have had the line tested by our telephone/broadband provider and have tried connecting the telephone and the modem directly into the telephone point and we have been told there is no fault on the Eircom line. We only become aware of the problem when he's gaming and the phone is used

I have a D-link DIR 615 and 2 laptops, a Toshiba (Vista) at about 35 ft away and a Dell (XP) about 15 ft away from the router. Both laptops connect to the router. The Dell w/ 4 or 5 bars and the Toshiba usually 2 bars. They stay connected to the router but lose the internet regularly. Anywhere from every day or two or 3 and 4 times a day. Usually shutting off the router for 10 seconds and turning it on again will reconnect to the internet but sometimes it takes up to 4 or more times and resetting the router before it works again. This happened when I was on a different cable network at a different address last year.

I brought this router mainly for audio/video streaming, as well as multiplayer gaming. I thought it would work. However, whenever i try to watch a show online, or even play a flash game, it would disconnect. I've only had this router for one day. I have Time Warner Cable as my cable provider and honestly since I'm living alone, the only two device that'll ever use the router is my laptop and my desktop.

Even when connected via an Ethernet cable the problem persists.I have kinda contained the problem to his laptop or the router they are using because the other laptop they have never disconnects and works perfectly fiine.

My PC at work has started disconnecting from the network one to 3 times per day and I haven't been able to figure out why. At first I thought that it was my switch so I plugged the wire directly into the wall and it still disconnected Then I thought it must be a bad networking card so I replaced that yesterday and it disconnected again. Like I said, it only happens a couple of times per day which wouldn't be so bad except that sometimes I have a Citrix session going or my Great Plains Dynamics program open and I have to go kick myself out of those sessions.

My net connection is disconnecting every 30-45mins and this has been going on now for the past three weeks since I built my new PC.Here's what I've done to try to rectify this:
* Uninstalled/reinstalled Windows 7 (64-bit)
* Called ISP (AOL), whose first and second-line tech support ran tests and couldn't find any problems with the line.
* Changed the router (from a D-Link DSL2640-R to a Huawei EchoLife HG521 - both provided by ISP).
* Replaced the Ethernet cable that connects the router to my PC.
* Replaced the Rj11 cable that connects my router to the DSL filter.
* Replaced both DSL filters in my house (I have two phones at seperate locations in my house).
* Removed the bell wire from my telephone sockets. Whilst this didn't fix the disconection problem, it has increased my download speed from 130kbps to over 300kbps.
* Uninstalled the ethernet network adapter and then installed the most up-to-date network adapter driver available.
* Tried a couple of programs to optimize both my network and my PC to no avail.
* Changed my Anti-virus software from AVG to Avast, but again, there's no fix. [code]

We are a business partner of a larger company that gives us a VPN access to connect to one website. It's the Nortel VPN so it's old but it's set to disconnect our Internet when we connect which is really inefficient. I understand why it does that but right now we use two computers, we have one as our main one then another sitting here just for VPN.Does the Nortel VPN work system wide when it disconnects the Internet? Or is there a way to use Ethernet and Wifi and just have the VPN connect over Ethernet and just disconnect the Internet there but keep my local network on Wifi? Or is that not possible? I'm assuming it's not just wondering if there's any alternatives.

Current set up is a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem and a Linksys WRT54GS router.
