Server 2008r2 Cannot Find Domain Name

May 3, 2012

I am wanting to setup a small network at home. I am using Server 2008r2 64 bit running on VMWorkstation, which is the only way I can run a 64bit OS. I have it installed and running on VM with active directory and a domain created. My problem is trying to join the domain with my other PC's. They cannot find the domain name. The network connection on the VM is set to NAT.

2008R2 / Cisco2960 - Why Can User Log Into A Domain Account When The Server Is Down

Jan 13, 2012

We had a power outage that kicked off our server and our network switch (2008R2, Cisco2960), before we could get it back up, a user was able to log into his laptop.

The user used the domain login - not the local machine account - he obviously wasn't able to access any shared resources, but how did he log in with a domain account, when the server and switch were both off?

MSCHAPv2 / Setup Secure VPN Server Using Windows Server 2012 Without Domain?

Jan 10, 2013

i've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication

Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.

However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.

My question is this: Is there a way to setup a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

Cisco LAN :: 891 Router DNS Server Without Domain Name

Nov 8, 2012

I have a 891 router setup as the local DNS server and external lookups from connected devices (and the router cli) work fine. I'm having problems getting internal host lookups working though.

this is relevent part of the config, router ip address is 192.168.100.9:

no ip dhcp use vrf connected
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.100.1

[Code]....

If I put rearswitch. (i.e. add a single full stop at the end of the hostname) it resolves fine. The same behaviour happens with other hosts defined with the ip host command. Is it possible to use local hostnames without a domain name or full stop?

Cisco Wireless :: 881W Can't Set DNS Or Domain Server On AP

Feb 2, 2012

I have a Cisco 881W configured for wireless (just a PSK, nothing special). I can get out to the Internet OK and browse to everywhere except my own websites.

It runs on a connection that does not connect directly to my network, but our website is available to the world externally.

Now, from the router a traceroute and ping work fine to our website but from the wireless connection I can get to everywhere else on the web but our website. A traceroute just stars out. I'm using 8.8.8.8 as a DNS server and nslookup resolves the DNS.

I can't set a DNS server or domain server on the ap on the 881W so are there any commands I can use to see what's going on?

Trust Relationship Failure Windows 7 To Server 2003 Domain

Jul 30, 2012

When attempting to log in to a computer (running Windows 7 Professional) here at the office using the network administrator account, I get the error message: "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed." I wasn't here when this laptop was set up, and so I don't know if any local user accounts were made or what their passwords would be if they were there, so I can't think of any way to log in to the machine and disconnect/reconnect to the domain which is really my only idea on how to fix it. Finding out what would cause this to suddenly start happening would also be nice, but mostly I just need to figure out how to get reconnected so I can get this back up and running.

Domain Name Registrar Pointed To Home Web Server On Private IP Address Behind

Jun 6, 2011

I have purchased a domain name through a registrar. I currently have a hyper v lab set up at home with a domain controller/dns server and am thinking of starting a web server on either Apache or IIS on a different virtual machine. I want to point my domain name to my home web server. What do I do I have to do at my domain name registrar? I have to point a type of dns record to my home server's public IP and maybe vice versa.I have a static IP at home. Do I have to create some DNS records pointing from my domain name registrar to my server at home using my PUBLIC ip address? If possible please provide specifics on which records I should point to my home server PUBLIC ip address and if any DNS changes need to be made within my domain. Also if any records on my home domain (windows ad domain setup)

I seem to be able to find a lot of info on Apache and IIS but not a whole lot of info on how your web domain name registrar relates to your own web server . I'm not really interested on IIS or Apache specifics but more interested in the fundamentals of how a domain name registrar (GoDaddy, or any other registrar/host) needs to be pointed to your web server and vice versa. I know a lot of people on forums tend to point to links or tell me to go to google but I find it hard to learn that way.
