Work station of domain network stopped accessing the server and internet. Assigned IP address, since DHCP would not hand out automatic IP address. Was working fine before today.
View 1 RepliesI have a Vista Workstation that out of the blue today stopped connecting to the internet after applying the windows updates. I have gone back and rolled them out but it still will not connect.It is hardwired (Ethernet) to a cisco e4200 router that gets its internet from a motorola surfboard cable modem. I tried it with a wireless connection and had the same issue.Other computers on the network work fine both connected with ethernet and wireless. It won't assign an IP even though dhcp is enabled on the router, so I assigned a static one and it sees the local network just fine, I'm copying files from it to my NAS server without a problem.

The reason this is a problem is because in order to add a workstation to my domain, I have to manually configure DNS to my server's ip. I have two networks, all new systems and this occurs on both. I have configured a my desktop as a domain controller with server 2008..with dns service running on it. When i tried adding another desktop to this domain, i get the following error message
"Troubleshooting network identification Error: This computer successfully resolved the Domain Name System (DNS) service (SRV) resource record required to locate a domain controller, but it failed to locate a domain controller for the Active Directory domain displayed in the error message.
Cause: The required A (address) resource records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP address do not exist in DNS.
Solution: Verify that the required A resource records do not exist in DNS by using the Nslookup command-line tool.

We are having a network of 7 computers and a server (Ubuntu server). The problem is, two of them are not connecting to the network. When i check the network card of these two systems, it seems working (the green light is blinking). When i replace these systems with a laptop, it connecting to the network and there is not problem at all.

Inside the network, all appears to be fine. I have a server that was previously connected to a router and a workstation was connected to the router as well. It was all previously connected to the Internet via cables. I need to be able to access a server 172.17.0.10 on port 4899 from workstation 172.16.1.192. My ACL's are listed above (obviously!). It's not working as it is. My suspiscion is the deny ip 172.17.0.0 0.0.0.255 172.16.0.0 0.15.255.255 in ACL 120. But that is required as we cant have users from the 172.17 network seeing/accessing the 172.16 network.
i've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:
PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication
Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.
However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.
My question is this: Is there a way to setup a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?
I am setting up the network for the computer institue I work for. We are discarding the old network and are going for a new network. There will be 2 Computer Labs with 60 computers in each Lab. The staffroom will have 20 computers. The Accounts department will have 5 computers. All the departments are in the same building with just 2 floors. It will be a wired network. All computers should have access to the Internet. There will be a printer each in the 2 Labs, staffroom & accounts department which has to be shared with their respective network. The Lab computers will run MS Office, Adobe software etc. Likewise the the staffroom and accounts department computers will also have to run MS Office and probably Adobe software as well. We will be using Windows Server 2003 and are inclined to use IBM servers due to a partnership. Cost isn't a major issue and the management is willing to spend to set this up rightly in the first place.My main question is whether we should go for a thin client network with everything running in the main servers. In that case how many servers should we have and what would be the ideal config of those servers.If we go for workstation PCs for each user if cost isn't an issue then what are the benefits over thin client computersDo we have to have a separate server for data?

Server plugged into switch.Switch plugged into router.Router DHCPs except printer is static IP. All have access to internet through server then out through router.Have added another workstation that is not allowed access to the network (on purpose) but needs to be able to use the printer. The workstation is not under our security for virus control, etc so I don't want it in the server. But it needs access to internet and access to printer. Should I create a separate subnet from the router and keep the workstation separate there? If so, then how can I keep the printer accessible to both subnets?

At one point I was able to connect to my drives but was unable to connect to the internet. But once I call the ISP they had me change setting for Ipv4 changed defualt gateway, Ip address and DNS after that I was unable to reconnect to my drives. I've done full shut downs and restarts and nothing has worked. 1 of the computers connects to the server through wifi. I also run a VPN.

I am trying to get my ACL's to work, but when ever I do an extened acl and let certain one in (80,443,21,etc) my computer gets an internet error saying it cannot conntact the dns server. I've tried severl ways to fix it, but cannot seem to get it to work.
Right now i just have access-list 1 on. Eventually I would like to have only "Apple" and 101 on.

We have a leased internet connection which is used on a number of different offices. The sbs-server has an IP address of 192.168.50.254 with a gateway Ip address of 192.168.50.1. The firewall on this network has an external IP of 10.50.0.37 with a gateway of 10.50.0.254 and this links to the leased line equipment. The external IP address for this network is 62.7.70.237. The PC in the warehouse has an IP address of 192.168.0.2 attached via a router to the leased line. The routers Ip address is 192.168.0.1, the external IP address is 10.50.0.55 and a gateway of 10.50.0.254. This links to the leased line and seems to have an external Ip address of 62.7.70.238. My issue is that I want the PC in the warehouse to be able to connect in some way to the SBS-Server. I cannot seem to access it via the external IP or the gateway (10.50.0.37).

For instance, I have a dyndns address of ericnewton76.dyndns.org. This points to my router. Works fine if you're NOT within the router's internal network, ie, outside hosts can get in just fine (try it... http:// , you'll see an IIS7 welcome screen)
However, when INSIDE the network, the requests don't get connected properly, and they used to... ie, I work with code, so my svn repo is at ericnewton76.dyndns.org/svn but inside my network it doesn't connect properly anymore (whereas it used to before firmware update)
So now I wish I could back-peddle to 1.0 firmware.
