Unable To Contact DNS Yet Can Still Use Some Websites?
Jan 17, 2012
I have a rather specific and annoying problem with my router. every few days or so the internet will cut out. However, i am still able to use websites that i have been using already, so am able to check emails read articles etc, but am unable to do things like stream videos from youtube or play online games. I run network diagnostics (Windows 7) and receive the error: Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (samsung.msn.com) is not responding. I have already updated all my drivers and have completely reinstalled my router and checked all cables etc. This appears to be only to do with computers that are connected wirelessly, as the pc connected via ethernet seems to be unaffected,
I have both a netbook and a gaming pc connected wirelessly.
Netbook:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Starter, Service Pack 1, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N550 @ 1.50GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 28 Stepping 10
I've been trying (in vain) to connect a USB Wireless device to be able to use it off my wireless network. I have (2) other laptops and (1) other desktop connecting to the router with no issues. For some reason, this old desktop keeps installing an Ethernet device (probably on the MB) and is automatically Configuring the IP address to that instead of the USB wireless device.I've tried uninstalling the Ethernet device but it comes right back after I do a reboot. Even when I disable it, I still can not connect with my Wireless device.
need to know why I can not connect to the internet after I am done downloading windows Xp on my Desk top. I got an error message from the cmd, saying that computer is unable to contact DHCP server.
I just moved to Auckland, NZ from the USA to go to school at the university here, and am having a problem connecting to the internet in the university residence hall in which I am living.Wifi is not available in the residence halls, so we need to use an Ethernet cable. When I plug in my computer, the network adapter icon says Identifying for a while then settles on Unidentified Network with no internet access, the IP is 169.x.x.x.When I try to release and renew the IP, it says unable to contact your DHCP server, request has timed out".I've tried multiple Ethernet cables, both brand new.I tried connecting to a port in a friend's room in the same building, and even in a classroom on campus, and both had the same result.Naturally after all that I assumed my NIC somehow died overnight while I traveled here, so I went to a computer repair shop expecting to have some hardware replaced, but we plugged it in there and it worked immediately so they weren't sure what to tell me.
I've gone through pages of old threads at this forum and others like it, trying solutions but having no luck.I've power cycled my computer, obviously I can't power cycle the whole network as it's for 200 people, but the IT people here have tried resetting it for me on their end as best they can. I have a Dell 570 Inspiron desktop running win7 home premium w/ a 64 bit OS. I have Frontier dsl with a Westell 327W modem and a netgear router. Two desktops are connected to the internet...one through the modem and the Dell 570 through the router. I also run laptops through the router w/no problem. This morning the dsl went down, and when it came back up, the Dell 570 would not connect. i tried Diagnosing Connection Problems, and I'm told to turn off the modem/router (which I have done a gazillion times). When I look at Network Connections in the Control Panel, It tells me I have an unidentified network and can't connect. I read through some forums earlier, and found that releasing and renewing ipconfig often corrects the problem, and that's when I got the message that 'An error occurred while nenewing. Local Area Connection unable to contact DHCP server.' This set up has worked for the past year and a half. I looked at the network adapter, and it says it's working properly. I changed the cables going to the machines, and they both work on this computer. The only change made to the computer was to install McAfee security center through AOL yesterday, but the set up worked all yesterday and last night.
Until a couple of days ago I was able to connect to the internet wirelessly on both my laptop as well as my desktop. However, that has changed for the desktop, now I am unable to access the internet on it. It says that it can detect the signal. When I tried to renew the ip it responded with "An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out." [code]
I randomly lost Internet connection, and since have not been able to Renew an IP address! Other people in my household can connect just fine. I've tried numerous things to get my internet back, but continue to be unsuccessful in doing so.

I have reinstalled windows 7 on my Toshiba laptop, I have my wireless set to automatically connect, I have excellent signal strength and have another pc connected to wireless router, but my laptop does not capture IP addresses. I tried renew command but got message unabl to contact your DHCP server, request timmed out.
I've been having problems connecting my laptop to the internet through wireless. When I plug it in with a cable it works fine. I also know my wireless works fine because i have other things attached to it. When I try to connect it says limited or no connectivity, but the signal strength is excellent. I have tried to repair the problem but it then tells me it cannot renew my ip address. I've also tried the ipconfig /release then renew, and thats when it says about my DHCP.
I have a Gateway 818gm desktop pc and the wifi stopped working after I reformated the hard drive. I can not figure out where the wifi card is in this PC.
I can connect directly to the router wirelessly without any problems. When I use my powerline adapter I get the 'unable to contact DHCP Server' error. I've tried unencrypting the router with no success. I've also released/ renewed my IP. [code]
I have an 871 set up at home with 2 VLANs, both of these vlans present a strange behavior where an user is unable to ping/contact another user on the same subnet, however if users are on different subnet it seems to work [code]
According to the troubleshooting that I have done, the issue seems to be with the broadcast traffic, ARP request/reply do not reach another host on the same subnet (wireless to wireless or wired to wireless) however if the wireless device iniciates the connection to wired, it works fine.
I have tried to enable proxy arp on the different VLANs and BVI and different combinations but no sucess in order to get traffic across 2 wireless devices on the same subnet or a connection that is iniciated for a wired client to a wireless one.
I tried enabling and disabling dot11 arp-cache but no luck.
Started this morning woke up checked my phone no wifi hmm weird checked my hp tpuchsmart connected but jo internet access checked my router(netgear wireless N 300) made sure my modem and all wires are connectedNext went to my router ip 192.168.1.1 after reading some forrums i thought maybe if i changed the ip or sum i would have worked i know dumb though.. any way i believe i disabled my dhcp.. and one of the ip ad on the same page to 192.168.1.3 thats when it got worst i tried ipconfig/release saysNo operation can be performed on bluetooth network connection 2 while it has media disconnected. No operation can be performed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected(Its a wireless connection from my touchsmart to my router) I have tried goin back to the routers page but i can no longer find itI have also tried ipconfig/renew but i get this...No operation can be performed on bluetooth network connection 2 while it has its media disconnectdAn error occured while renewing interface wireless network connection : unable to contact your dhcp server. Request has timed out.No opration can be performed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected
I am unable to get to different websites, I have cleaned the dns, cache, deactivated and reactivated the security programs, firewalls and everything that I can think of
Unable to connect to certain websites. I can access almost everything except for a handful of sites. So far I've identified 3 sites. umkc.edu, nfm.com, and 7thheavenonline.com. I really need to access the umkc site for school. If I use a free proxy service I can pull the sites up, but with the amount I pay each month to Time Warner I shouldn't have to do this.
I can't load the main page or any user profiles. Can't do it on IE/Firefox/Chrome or the in-game Steam browser. Weird part is that I can use Steam perfectly to play games, Friends system works, etc. Just the websites related to it don't load. Problem started about 2 weeks ago, went away for 5 days, but then came back (only messing with Steam websites again). I know the problem isn't Steam because all my friends have been able to use it normally this whole time. The problem is not limited to my own PC, every computer on my network has the same problem, even iPads/iPhones. I've checked for malware, came up clean; reset router to factory settings, done everything I've been able to come up with and the problem persists.
As of last night, randomly out of nowhere I was unable to connect to any websites on my laptop, I had lost the connection completely. I was able to re-connect but not use any websites, although I was able to use Skype somehow. So I turned off my router, decided to try this morning to see if there was any difference on my computer instead, and although a few websites now work (like facebook) I'm not able to get onto my AOL email account, or [URL]
I turned my firewall off but there was no difference, I ran a scan for malware but there was no results, I've tried disconnecting everything and re-connecting everything. I've not installed any updates in about two weeks
How fun. Earlier this week, my state experienced some severe weather which ended with a tree on our street falling and the power going out all day. It took a bit longer after that for our cable services to be restored - internet included. Ever since then, my computer in particular seems to be screwing things up for everyone else. When my computer is shut off, every other computer (one laptop, two desktops) in the house has been able to connect to the internet and maintain that connection all day. However, as soon as mine connects, the connection dies within minutes - for everyone.
I thought it could be an IP conflict but every machine in the house is set to obtain their IP automatically. Interestingly enough, when the XBOX 360 is bridged through my computer it (the xbox) also maintains a connection, albeit a slower one.I have reset both the router and modem, including hard resets, and I've pinged and pinged and pinged. The same thing seems to happen regardless of whether I am using a wired or wireless connection. Here's what I have:
Computer model is HP DV6838nr. Modem is Toshiba DAZ8821F. Router is Linksys wrt54g v5. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.
I am using Firefox but have also tried Opera with the same results.
-- + Computer has been showing a successful connection in the Network and Sharing Center even when websites fail to load and the connection has gone down for others.
+ When trying to use a wired connection for the first time, the computer could not connected. IT jumped back and forth between "Identifying..." and no connection at all.
+ I reset the router with both wired and wireless connections. With the wireless, it would become functional for a few minutes after being reset and then fail again. With the wired, the router would not broadcast at all. I ended up having to unplug it for a minute and then plug it back in to get it to broadcast again.
+ I tried using my cable with just the modem, but the Data and PC lights failed to light up upon doing this.
+ After all of this, I removed the wired connection and re-enabled my wireless on the laptop. Connection was restored for a few minutes.
+ Despite a successful ping after two minutes, most websites wouldn't load.
+ Switched to a different laptop after turning mine off and was able to maintain a normal internet connection for over an hour. After starting up the computer for the first time:
C:UsersManda>ping yahoo.com
Pinging yahoo.com [67.195.160.76] with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out.[code].....
Interestingly enough, despite the successful pings I was still unable to get most websites to load on my browser.
I have an XP machine that i am not access websites from. the machine is hardwired into a router, the other computers connected to the router(wifi) are able to get access websites without issue.here are the steps i have taken and the things i know so far.im pulling a valid ip address, with correct dns/gateway all that good stuff
able to ping other machines on the network, pings the router, and able to ping google.com(so i know there is connection between me and the internet, and that dns is working)
installed firefox to see if it was a problem with IE, no go.took a look at the active process and looked up anything that wasnt familiar, that seems to be good.virus scan with avast came up clean, avast is able to connect to its database and pull the most current virus defs. there isnt a firewall, the only security measures on the computer is avast.
I have been accessing my webmail account everyday for the past 3yrs with not problem until this week. Stopped working mid week. No changes to computers. Have 3 and none will access this site any longer. Just times out. Sometimes I can ping and other times not. Can log onto other networks and access with out any problems. My ISP says it is not their problem. (Site is [URL]).
Computer is Win 7, SP1 fully updated.I can browse to most other web site, but cannot go to Google or YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
Tried a bunch of stuff like flushdns, winsock fix, clearing cache. Nothing works.Cannot ping to Google either.Gives in ip address but times out.Even when typing in the google ip that returns from the ping cmd it will not go to the web site.
I've installed aDIR655 for my friend's cafe and found that Clients ( both wired and WIFI ) have difficulties accessing Yahoo and MSN while Googles etc ( and other Newspaper and webmail sites are OK ) is fine.....I tried to reload and reboot and re-config etc but all in vain...
I have had my router for about a month and all the wireless lan stuff seems to be brilliant. Recently I signed up to an ISP (Plusnet), and can't access most websites. The ISP has told me that I should take this up with my Router company. I seem to be having the exact same problems as this guy was having [url]....
Been more than 2 years since I purchsed this router from US and has been working flawlessly till now. Lately I have been facing issues with few websites not opening when my laptop is connected to the router using a lan cable. Sites like speedtest.net (I get the download speed but when it needs to upload it is stuck there forever), [URL] is another which just does not open.
I tried opening these sites using e4200 wifi and everything works perfectly. I even updated the firmware to the latest 1.0.05 build 7 Aug 23, 2012 but still the same issue.
My router set to Automatic configuration - DHCP...
Also when I directly connect the internet cable to my laptop lan, everything opens without any issues.
I recently bought the E4200 v2. When I first installed, I ran the firmware update and then performed a hard reset (push reset button for 20 secs). I then began to enter all the PPPoE information and network settings into the new router (verified these settings with the existing WRT54GL router I'm current using and they all matched). I then disconnected the old router, and powered up the E4200. I was able to access the new router (192.168.0.1), I could see all previously shared files/computers with the new router, but I could not access most websites - usually I got a timeout error, or they eventually loaded in 10x the usual speed. This was typical of both laptops - one wired, and one wireless. My wireless handheld device could connect to the wireless network, and ran a speeedtest.net test, and upload/download speeds were normal - but I could not access the internet from the device. When I switched back to the old router, everything worked perfectly again. I have tried some suggestions on changing MTU values, but that did not seem to make any difference.
As a work-around, I have ended up keeping the WRT54GL as the main router and using the E4200 in bridged mode for wireless only (not what I ideally would like)..
I've been on DSL with British Telcom Infnity (FTTC) since March and had no problems with the service. My router, however, an Apple Time Capsule, was not so reliable and needed a reboot every few days,So I just purchased the E4200 V2The Setup completes OK and PPPoE logs into my ISP fine. But then I hit the problem. Most of the websites I use simply won't load . In Safari on my OS X Lion, Macbook, I get an error like this "Request Timeout. The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request. Reference #2.525fdd58.1336048435.0" In IE on my Windows XP laptop, the error is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"But some websites still load fine. So [url]..., loads instantly. Most other sites I try, including [url]... - won't load at all. (Plusnet is my ISP)If I connect to my work VPN, I can browse as normal
I am facing a problem that I can not browse the websites (or receive POP emails, but I can send emails) via the DSL router CISCO1941/K9, the DHCP is configured at the Switch (not on this router) and actually the PCs are able to do a ping for the hosts (like [URL] and so on) but they can not browse !!
Below is my DSL router configuration if u would to give a look

I've been having a strange intermitent problem with my E1500 wireless router. When we first bought and installed it everything was working well with no known problems. After several months no one using the router was able to access certain websites as well as a game server that we play on. No one had made any changes to the router settings and I assumed at first that it was an ISP problem. After talking with our ISP tech support they finally suggested plugging my PC directly into the modem rather then the router. I did and found that the websites and servers that previously wouldn't connect while using the router were now reachable. Any changes to the router settings since installation.I decided that just in case someone unauthorized had made changes to simply revert the router to factory settings and reinstall the software. After doing this I found that I could again reach the websites and servers that I previously could not. So time went on with no problems until a few months later when the same websites and servers were again unreachable by anyone on our router. I again reset the router to factory settings and changed passwords as a precaution, but this time the websites and servers were unreachable even though I had just reset the router.
I have a Time Warner modem/router. There are a ton of different devices constantly being connected/disconnected to our router - itouches, computers, smartphones etc.
The problem started with my otherwise super reliable HP g42 (i3) laptop. Nothing would solve the issue other than recovering it back a few days to when the issue wasn't happening. But then it would happen again after a few days. All other devices would connect without issue.
Time warner's technical troubleshooting consists of "unplug the router for 10 seconds and then plug it back in. Did that work?"
So now, my son gets his first computer and I bring it home last night. Also an HP (pavillion -i3). Same deal. At first, it connects fine and dandy. Then after about 2 hours it get the ol' "won't connect - diagnose the problem?" After diagnose, it says "DNS server may not be available.
Here's the thing: Both computers connect immediately and without issue to my smartphone wireless tether.
I am running a Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows XP SP 3. My computer is displaying cannot aquire network address, can't contact dhcp. I have already had the modem and ethernet cables tested, they're fine, and I have tried replacing the network card, no luck. I have also run ip config renew and replace as well as ipconfig/all everything was zero. I checked the startup menu and all the appropriate network apps are marked started and automatic.
