View 5 Replies View RelatedOur house has a cat5 line that runs from downstairs, around the outside of the house to an upstairs office. We are consolidating all the outlets that are randomly spread around the walls. The cat5 cable is about 6 inches too short to reach the new box so we figured we might as well run a new cat6 line. (I think we can make the run 20 feet shorter so that's a bonus.)The cat5 line has 2 jacks wired in series at either end. Everything I've read says cat6 is much more touchy and you should only expose the minimal amount of wire from the sheathing and don't untwist the pairs more than necessary. Can I put two jacks on each end of the cat6?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI converted my old telephone wiring (Cat5e wire) to Ethernet by adding keystone jacks and then tied all the rooms together. I test every room for continuity with a LAN tester and everything showed up OK. I then plug my Ethernet in one of the keystone jack and check for internet in every room with my laptop received no connection. I connect the same cable to my laptop and everything works fine

I have tried with multiple jacks and experimented with different wiring configurations but they still don't work. I know the wire I am working with is good because it had a male connector on it and I connected it to my laptop before I started wiring the jack and it worked.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWiring my house for Cat6 very soon. I already have most of the architecture decided on (except the decision of whether or not to use a patch panel, but that's another story). However, the office layout is giving me problems.
See, I plan to rent out my house some years down the road, as work will inevitably force me to relocate sooner or later. I know that *I* would want the ethernet ports on the North side of the office, but I can conceivably see somebody else needing them on the South side of the office. Cords running across the room are a pet peeve of mine, so that's out.
Instead of placing the jacks on just one side of the room, I'd prefer to put a jack on BOTH sides of the room, for each line. Like how you used to find two RJ11 phone jacks on the same landline. (note: only one pair of jacks would be used at a time). Is this easily possible with Cat6?
Does anyone Know if I can use Siemens cat6 jacks with any other face plate? I can get all Siemens stuff from work, but am not overly fond of how their face plates look to put them all over my house.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there an easier way to connect an RJ45 connector to a Cat5 cable, rather than the traditional method of lining up the wires by hand, inserting them in the right order into the jack, and then crimping it? It just seems like it would be very tedious if you had to do this A LOT, and I've had a good bit of practice. I saw that they make "EZ RJ45" jacks.. but do they make anything else that can make it easier? I'm asking out of curiosity, and not necessity. I have no problem wiring them, but it's just something that I hate to do (I think a lot of people would agree that it's not the most fun thing to do in the world of networking).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm wanting to setup a small LAN in my office between 3 PC's for internet, file and printer sharing.each of the PC's has it's own printer connected to it and the idea here is to allow each of the PC's to have access to all printers at any time.Two of the PC's are running WinXP and one is based on Windows 7 Professional.The internet being used in our office is a shared 3G USB dongle (which we currently have to keep moving from one PC to another as the need be), so I'd like that when one PC is connected, all PC's should have access to the internet from that PC. (I would not like to connect the 3G USB dongle into the router).

We just have 3 people that will be working in the office and we need a way to store/backup/share files on the network as well as a way to access them remotely if need be. Our internet service is going to be providing us with a static IP. I was thinking that we could use an NAS with RAID 1 attached to the router, which is in turn connected to the cable modem, but I'm not sure if this is secure. Do we need some type of hardware firewall in between the cable modem and the router to protect us from the outside?

-Our wall socket line runs to a modem we have from our ISP
-The modem then is connected to our server computer
-Which is in turn connected to a switch
-...where the computers and a router are connected to
This was set up by some computer company. Now for the question: we have used the router connected to the switch to connect wirelessly to the server to receive emails on our mobile phones (email runs via the server too). Also, my father syncs his Outlook diary on his phone this way. Apparently this doesn't work when connected to the modem, I guess because that signal hasn't been processed by the server yet. Now we are unable to connect to the router, presumably because it is quite old and ready for a replacement.
The question is: Can I just replace it with some random router and expect it to work? Or do I need a more specific router/more specific settings in the router to make this work again?
I just took a position and never had to work with networks that much before. Our lan is very slow and trying to figure out why. We have verizon business class 3 t1 lines dedicated 4 M. When I do a speed test we get about 4.05 average and 4.23 down. We have 11 computers on the network connected to a Dell power connect 2716. We have Two network printers and that is it. We are having problems with it being very slow when connecting to a share on the server or using RDP.

The wireless network works great for using the internet, but we are having trouble with the wired network.The issue is being able to communicate with all of the computers on the wired network. The ability to speak with all of the computers on the network is hit or miss. Generally, computer A can speak with computer B, C, and D, but D can only speak with A.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been tasked with the technology update of our office and have have MAJOR questions which I hope can be answered here, so here goes;
First a little history, I have an electronics degree and a certificate in computer technology, so computers are not something new to me, however networking IS.I have a VERY LIMITED budget to work with, which I'm sure is not unheard of before, with the following equipment already available:
1 MFP currently on lease connected via network
3 totally junk PCs running 3 different versions of Windows from XP to 7
A DSL internet connection
A wireless router
A wired 8 port switch
What I would like to do is begin with a basic server, 7 clients, shared internet on all machines (including external via login), An MFP, at least 1 NAS for data storage, 1 NAS for backup of all drives.
He currently has 1 server, and 11 workstations, he also has a network switch that we will be replacing.We have picked out a Dell server, running Windows Server 2008 R2 that will be used as the main file server, as well as the domain controller. Where I seem to be confused is on setting up the networking component, particularly how the machines will get IP addresses. As mentioned, I will be purchasing a new Ethernet switch, in order to get the fastest LAN speed possible; I have selected the Dell PowerConnect 2816, which is a 10/100/1000Mbs switch. My question is, will I be letting the switch handle the IP's/DHCP or would I be better off, setting up the server for DHCP? If so, do I also setup the server as the DNS server? From what I am reading online using the server as the DHCP/DNS server gives us more management capabilities and is more "secure". As a test, I loaded Windows Server 2008 R2 on a home machine and played around with this. I got a bit lost on the DHCP and DNS setup and it appears that one needs a Static IP from your ISP in order to setup your serve as the DHCP/DNS server for the domain. Is this correct? I haven't been to his office yet to check out all the existing equipment, is it safe to assume that his ISP provides a router or whatever is needed to feed the switch?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using LMS 3.2 to monitor my network. We've recently purchsed a few of the Cisco Small Business Switches, the SF 300-24 model to be exact. They're considered 'managed switches' (tho thier CLI is terrible) and I would like to monitor them in CWLMS. My problem is that once I add it to CS, it doesn't resolve to anything, just sits there as a blue box with a question mark. I'm assuming this means that these devices are not (currently) supported by LMS 3.2 - do you know if that will change, or how I can go about managing this device with LMS 3.2?

The router is configured with bgp for 2 providers and local network is /24 rout able network (92.224.1.0/24). I think bgp is configured correctly because I can ping any ip from the router (92.224.1.1), for example I can ping 8.8.8.8.
The problem is that I can not ping anything from the local network, from example I can not ping 8.8.8.8 (Google dns) from 92.224.1.2.
92.224.1.2 has as default gw 92.224.1.1.
92.224.1.2 -> 92.224.1.1 -> BGP 2 ISP's
