I am trying to wire cat 5 jacks into my walls and none of the jacks work. I have tried with multiple jacks and experimented with different wiring configurations but they still don't work. I know the wire I am working with is good because it had a male connector on it and I connected it to my laptop before I started wiring the jack and it worked.

View 8 Replies View Relatedour windows PC's will connect to the home (wireless) network briefly (~15 sec) and then lose the internet connection. The wireless connection seems to stay strong. During that period any browser activity will result in a DNS error message and the Win7 network signal shows strong but not connected to the internet. We tried setting static IP addresses on the PCs but no luck. A number of PC's all running Win7 exhibit this issue.After 5-10 min it reconnects and everything is normal.Network is a 20 mbs cable based system.

I went to virtual server option. then i select application name as Remote desktop then public port as (3389), protocol (both), Schedule (Always).My lan computer ip address (192.168.0.122), private port (same 3389), inbound filter (allow all). then i clicked save settings. Then the router took 20 seconds to save. then i close the browser.Then i asked my brother to connect through remote desktop connection who is on the skype and he is in different country and that time he is in office. So he put my router public ip address (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3389) in this format but unable to connect.

Unfortunately, the cable that goes with this modem is too short (just 2m).This week, I bought a cable (internet cable) of 24m and I expected to be able to move around while being connected and surf the internet but internet does not work when I am using the new cable. We have tested the cable (using a cable tester) and the cable seems to work fine. When I use back the old cable (which is very short) internet is working perfect.

My old Ethernet cable works just fine from said router to PC. I do not know why this one is not working. I tested the cable out on my laptop and it works fine for that. I am not sure what info to post about my PC, but I am using an Asrock z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard as my lan connector.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just moved into a house that has pre-wired CAT5 (Maybe 6) in every room. Its all connected by two Netgear FS116 switches in the attic.
According to my landlord I should just have to plug in my modem into any ethernet port, and internet will be present at every jack.
I've plugged into several of wall jacks and none of them seem to work. Sometimes for a random reason they will work, but the connectivity is so poor that I can't even load webpages. Connecting direct to the modem I receive excellent download speeds.
I am not 100% the cabling is correct, and don't know of any way to test if they are good besides plugging in my modem, and then seeing if my computer gets connectivity.
Is there some easy way I can troubleshoot this? Am I missing something major that I need to accomplish? Like go into the switch and change settings?
I used to have a WRT54G Router at home. I would regularly use Cisco Systems VPN Client to connect to my work router and the RDP to my work PC. I also can connect to home via RDP using other internet connections, like if I'm in a hotel or airport.It's just that my Linksys E3000 at home and the Cisco 2811 at work refuse to acknowledge each other.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSetting up a netgear n600 (WNDR3700) in my home. I have tried connecting two PCs to the LAN and am only getting 100mb/s with most of my patch cables(all are cat5e). I was only able to achieve 1Gb/s with 1 of my cables(which is actually a few feet to short for my shortest run). Both PCs have gigabit capability. What are the chances that 5 out of 6 cat5e cables are bad? Am I missing something?

View 5 Replies View RelatedOur house has a cat5 line that runs from downstairs, around the outside of the house to an upstairs office. We are consolidating all the outlets that are randomly spread around the walls. The cat5 cable is about 6 inches too short to reach the new box so we figured we might as well run a new cat6 line. (I think we can make the run 20 feet shorter so that's a bonus.)The cat5 line has 2 jacks wired in series at either end. Everything I've read says cat6 is much more touchy and you should only expose the minimal amount of wire from the sheathing and don't untwist the pairs more than necessary. Can I put two jacks on each end of the cat6?

I test every room for continuity with a LAN tester and everything showed up OK. I then plug my Ethernet in one of the keystone jack and check for internet in every room with my laptop received no connection. I connect the same cable to my laptop and everything works fine

View 2 Replies View RelatedWiring my house for Cat6 very soon. I already have most of the architecture decided on (except the decision of whether or not to use a patch panel, but that's another story). However, the office layout is giving me problems.
See, I plan to rent out my house some years down the road, as work will inevitably force me to relocate sooner or later. I know that *I* would want the ethernet ports on the North side of the office, but I can conceivably see somebody else needing them on the South side of the office. Cords running across the room are a pet peeve of mine, so that's out.
Instead of placing the jacks on just one side of the room, I'd prefer to put a jack on BOTH sides of the room, for each line. Like how you used to find two RJ11 phone jacks on the same landline. (note: only one pair of jacks would be used at a time). Is this easily possible with Cat6?
Besides MAC address filtering, is there another good / easier way to keep visiting laptops etc from plugging in a CAT cable and accessing a LAN protected by a perimeter firewall?

It just seems like it would be very tedious if you had to do this A LOT, and I've had a good bit of practice. I saw that they make "EZ RJ45" jacks.. but do they make anything else that can make it easier? I'm asking out of curiosity, and not necessity. I have no problem wiring them, but it's just something that I hate to do (I think a lot of people would agree that it's not the most fun thing to do in the world of networking).
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc).The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:
- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface
Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range.That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.
- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.
- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.
Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.
Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)
Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).
Here's the layout: Cable modem in the basement. Several devices in which I'd prefer a wired connection in the basement. Upstairs on the 1st and 2nd floor of the house are many devices in which wifi is fine or preferred.Here's the problem: As you might guess, wifi is weak upstairs and certainly on the patio and 2nd floor. I have an access point upstairs that I've experimented with but it is flaky.

I want to get the modem and router out of my computer room and in the basement where the cable enters the house. I want to do this to clean up the computer room wiring a bit and to run line drops to different rooms in the house where the internet will be utilized.Currently there are two PC's, a laptop, a tablet, sometimes a phone, and an XBOX using the internet. I want to get my printer back up and running on the network but thats another story. Only one PC is currently hardwired. I would like to run two cables into the room with the PC and XBOX that are currently using wireless, at least two into the computer room for the PC and network printer, and one or two into the living room for the blue ray player and possibly an internet tv.

The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

I have cable connection with my PC and wireless with my laptop, they both just stop working without any visible reason. Even the iphone i connect with wont work, but of course it says its connected and everything is ok.I tought it was an iOS 5 problem, so I reinstalled it. It worked for an hour then its all back again. I even tried sharing my PC conection so that my iPhone is connected to PC and not directly to router.But that produced the same results.

I believe I can only use 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.255 w/.254 subnet mask. However I already have some servers that are configured with applications (On the 192.168.2.0 network) that I do not want to change ips on because it would be a pain to reconfigure so, my other question is other than using .252 to extend it to 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.3.255, (I need the 192.168.2.0) is there anything I can do? Like use 192.168.1.0 with subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 to get the 192.168.2.0 network? The reason I asked is I was using a subnet calculator to try and figure this out but every time I put in 192.168.1.0 with .254 subnet mask it changed the ip to 192.168.0.1 to 192. 168. 1. 255.I would really like to use the netgear only.
