We frequently camp at campgrounds that offer free WiFi, but many campsites are on the fringe of receiving a signal. Is there anything I can add to my laptop to increase receiving range- ie usb adapter with antenna?

Often it says my signal is good or excellent and I still have problems. I'm pretty sure its not just my laptop because when I am home where we have our own network and my connection is great there. I have looked around on the internet for solutions and have not really found anything. All solutions say to do something to the router and I do not have access to it. I can get onto the internet via a DSL connection, but it will not make a connection when I have a telehone line inserted in the phone line jack. It is working but I have a few oddities. First of all, the out of range computer is connected to another wireless router that several laptops and another (wired) PC connect to. It has ICS (Windows XP internet connect sharing) enabled. This rules out using ICS on the laptop as 2 pc's would have the address of 192.168.0.1.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a university student and my building is made of concrete so I get pretty spotty wireless (lag at 9000+ ping on games?!). To improve my connection quality I was recommended the Alfa AWUS036NHR USB network adapter [URL]. The adapter itself works marvelously but here's the problem: when I install the adapter, the existing wireless drivers on my laptop fail and I cannot use the internal laptop NIC even when the adapter is unplugged. It says the device is ready but does not detect any networks. When I reinstall the NIC drivers, the adapter doesn't work anymore.Device manager still shows both drivers installed and running but the corresponding NIC/adapter won't detect any networks.
What I have tried:
-Disabling the other driver, reinstalling other driver
-Disabling a functioning driver to attempt to get the other device to work
-Trying different versions of the drivers--a longshot I know
My hardware:
Internal NIC:: Realtek RTL8723A Wireless Lan 802.11n USB 2.0
External adapter: Alfa AWUS036NHR using Realtek RTL8192C USB 802.11B/G/N 300M Wireless NIC drivers for Windows 8

can I use both of them (not at the same time) without having to reinstall drivers each and every time I switch?
Wireless network is functioning as my other devices connect to it properly. Been using the laptop in question for years without this problem and it seems to have just spontaneously lost the ability to identify the available network[CODE]

I've taken various numbers from the original card but none of them matches up with the part No's on the Dell website, of the three numbers on the card I think the Dell P/No is DP-N OPC559.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently lost my ability to access the internet at uni and as this is quite an inconvenience I am considering some alternatives, the most viable one I've managed to come up with hinges on the fact that I live in a building which is only a road and another building away from the main uni buildings (3 buildings on 2 city blocks), basically it looks like this: UNI BUILDING 1 | UNI BUILDING 2 |ROAD| UNI BUILDING 3 |ROAD| MY APARTMENT.So I'm thinking of building one of these: url.. or waiting for the r20000g (dual band) to come out and buying that.THEN the area I'm having a bit of trouble with: I need to get reception about 600-700m away through buildings, so I've been looking at Yagi antennas and such but can't seem to find any information on the following:
1. Will a high powered directional antenna go through a few buildings and still make it 1km (.6 miles)
2. How directional is a directional antenna? like if I point one in the general direction of the building how accurate do I have to be? (I have no problem buying 4-5 antennas if I need to)
3. Do I need a new Wi-Fi antenna for my laptops? it seems odd to me that a laptop would be able to transmit back 1km while I need a giant antenna to get to the laptop (I know its not this simple but it still seems odd)
I need a wifi card for my desktop that can get the same 55down 8up as my wired internet that is about 25 feet away. I cannot use a long ethernet cable. It doesn't matter whether it is internal or external as long as I can get the desired connection speed that I need.

With the configs i have tried.I have cloned the mac addy for the wifiAP i have shared. This should be enough. And i should be able to walk it across the street and have it act as the same wifiAP. And he should have the net, via my pc. I tried to use another wifi device to connect to the shared IP...And the router itself...But there was no internet. have tried to configure this router to work as a repeater as well using it's setup. I have tried manually configureing the mn-700 To use the same ip the other router does for it's services. The mn-700 doesn't keep the settings. When it does there is no internet or wifi services.When i have it setup on it's own, no config changes...It'll connect over wifi to the router but there is no net. I can connect a lan wire going to the other router and renew it's lease. This will give the mn-700 an ip addy as if it were another pc. It uses this as it's WAN config

My brother owns a Moto Razr, dad has HTC Desire C, friends have iPhone, S3, Nexus 3... all do not have any problems with our wifi connection anywhere in our house. In addition, I'm able to bring my 8 year old laptop across the street and use our wifi on our neighbour's lawn.
I have the main router, which is SMC SMCD3GN from Rogers in Canada, and I have heard from MANY people that this router REALLY sucks..especially the range. And I myself also had problem with low signal in the 2nd floor of my house, so I purchased the wifi repeater (TP Link) to extend the range. I followed the guide given in the box, and everything was set up flawlessly. However, after a few hours of use, all my devices (laptop, tablet, phone) which are in the same room as the repeater decrease the signal again, to the point where it was before I purchased the repeater. Then if I disconnect the wifi and reconnect, the signal is full again. Sometimes I have to unplug the repeater from the wall and replug in order for it to work.

View 14 Replies View RelatedSending WiFi signal about 1/4 mile from my home to where my daughter lives so she can use her Samsung Galaxy2 Tablet on WiFi.There are homes, condos and trees in between us, so it is not a clear path.So far this is what I have done.I am using a modem and a Netgear WNR834B Wireless N Router.I connected a Hawkins Laptop Extender (HWREN Wireless 150N Mini Extender * single antenna outlet) into the router and connected a WiFi cable from the Hawkins to my tower outside above my roof and have attached a 10 dbi gain Trendnet antenna (omnidirectional) to the cable.But still the WiFi signal doesn't seem to be very strong at all when I test with my phone.And obviously, my daughters tablet does not see my router when she has her tablet search for WiFi.I also tried a 14dbi WIfi ASUS directional antenna and basically came up with the same outcome... she could not see the WiFi signal..My daughter lives in a condo and is not capable or allowed to install any outside antenna system whatsoever.
