Netgear WNR 2000 / 1000 - Download Speed
Apr 10, 2011
According to the Time Warner website, my Road Runner Turbo with Power boost is capable of download speeds up to 15 Mbps, which seems to be far surpassed by all wireless routers. So what are the benefits of routers such as the Netgear WNR2000 and beyond with speeds up to 300 Mbps vs the Netgear WNR1000 with speeds up to 150 Mbps?
I'm more than willing to spend more for increased performance, but don't fully understand what benefits I'll see by dropping more than about $40 on something like the WNR1000.By the way, I'm in a two bedroom apartment and regularly have two laptops, a PS3, and Droid X connected to the internet.

Im having a horrible problem with my internet connection where I cannot use any kind of download site such as filefront or anything really. The main problem is once a download gets going (any filesize above 1MB) the connection will stall out and stop downloading until the server says cannot download or if available, i pause and start the download again. Its very frustrating having to babysit downloads or be unable to even complete one ,My router is a netgear N150 WNR 1000.

I've been experiencing some problems with my RangeMax wireless NETGEAR router (model WPN824) in terms of wireless connectivity. When directly plugged into my router (i.e. using ethernet cables), the download and upload speed (in mbps - megabytes per second) appear to be working correctly, where we register average download speeds of 15-19 mbps, and 1.99 to 2.07 mbps for upload speeds, as shown on speedtest.net. However, our wireless devices (i.e. laptops and Nintendo Wii) are not picking up the same download speeds, but the upload speed is fine. The problem is that the download speeds of the wireless devices are comparatively low, where speeds of 2.5 to 5.5 mbps are a commonality.
We've tried resetting the router (pushing that small button at the back of the router, using a pin) and have a new 10-character key password. We've also tried simply unlugging the power cable to the router, with disconnecting lengths of about 10 seconds to over a minute for separate attempts. It is also worth noting that the router occasionally disconnects and re-connects on irregular intervals, and we have many wireless devices attached to the router (though many of these are not in use and are very often disconnected from the internet, so I do not think the router is being overwhelmed).
I am currently paying for 30 mbps downloading speed and 2 mbps with respect to uploading, though the 30 mbps downloading speed will likely only be registered if directly connected to the black box (modem). As such, values of 10 to 18 mbps for downloading speed for a wireless device would be considered "normal". Why would our wireless devices not pick the correct mbps download speed? Is it possible that there is a setting on the NETGEAR SMARTWIZARD page (192.168.1.1) that is preventing this?

I am running Windows Vista and we recently got a new wireless router to work with our Blu-Ray player. The desktop works, but not the laptop. I can connect to the local network, but not the internet. The laptop worked before we got the new router, and it works on another network. Our new router is a Netgear WNR-1000 v3. I get a response when I ping 127.0.0.1.

Someone I know has a Linksys WRT54GX V.2 (no WDS capability at all to my knowledge) and a Netgear N300 WNR 2000 V3 (with the repeater option). He wants to connect one to the internet in a home. The other would go out to his shop and he would like to get the internet out there too. He would also like to access the internet wirelessly with a laptop at either end. He has a wireless laptop setup and it works. The shop is line of sight with the home with no obstacles. A wire will not be able to connect one wireless router with the other due to terrain features. His laptop can get the internet from the Linksys (the Linksys is set up in the home) while he is in part of the shop, and he is trying to increase the range so that he can move to another part of the shop.

I recently went to a higher speed ADSL which claimed to be 16Mpbs.. It is with Acanac and when i first tested with speed net it came in over 14Mbps. I was using a netgear wireless g router (old) with the 4200 speedstream modem and got these results which I found acceptable. Now using netgear n router modem combo DGN-2000 and my readings are just over 12 Mbps. I tried reverting and still got the lower speeds. I tried isolating one computer hard wired still got the lower 12Mbps.It hasnt really affected my download speeds as far as I can tell but I did find it a little puzzling.

Have been running win 2000 pro for last 5 yrs with trendnet pcitxr 1 gigabit nic card. Never had any problem running & connecting. Now cannot access internet @ 1 gigabit, ok @100mbit, for the most part. sometimes browser will lock-up, firefox or IE. Never had any problems like this before. Have changed nic card, replaced cable modem, wires. Have delete trendnet software and reloaded, ran winsock fix, move router cables, ran directly from cable modem, bypassing router, move nic to new slot, ran ipconfig /release & reset. All to no avail. when I ping comes back good. NIC cards I have tried all seem to be working.

I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

I also am using a Dell Inspiron N5010 with Windows 7 and have trouble connecting to Netgear WNR 1000. I have an Apple that has no trouble making that connection. I have spent over $100 to a local computer repair company trying unsuccessfully trying to fix the problem and $129 to Dell Technical Services with equal lack of success and then was told by a technical support person that they had fixed it, that they would not provide futher work to fix it. The fact is that the error occurred again immediately the moment the Dell technician hung up. I spent the following day just running internet on a cable connection for about 8 hoooting.ble shurs trouble free and then switched it to wireless, which failed in about 10 minutes as my own troubleshooting. This made it clear to me that the problem was only in the wireless connection.
They problem is the Blue Screen error time message that pops up at random times any time the computer is operating on wireless. At other timerred again immediatelyre occuthe failuat s it operates normally. The Blue screen error causes the computer to shut down and restart. The only solution I have found is to return the Netgear router to the store where I bought it (within 30 days of purchase) and pay the additional cost of a different router.
Service personell should at least be kept aware or incompatibilites, explained or unexplained, between particular router models and particular computer models so as to save this waste of time and money. I have lost about 3 weeks of useful time on this computer in addition to over $200 in direct costs attempting to find a fix.

On board NIC: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Controller (asus sabertooth x79 motherboard)I installed the drivers for it from intel's site.f I set link speed to auto (chooses 100mbps full duplex) or 100mbps full or half duplex, any HTTP downloads get slowed to a crawl (30kbps) (steam downloads remain at normal speeds). If I set it to 10mbps full duplex, download speeds jump to normal (500kbps for most HTTP sources)his happens on just this new computer (wired connection), any other computers on the network (wireless) work just fine

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package. I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.
After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010). Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time. I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.
My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3
Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt. Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload. First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order). After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were. I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still. I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds. Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router. Tested, similar speeds. Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue
Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode. If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states. If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.
Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back. Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue. Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine. Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps). Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings. Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors. So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on. Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause. Turned off wan shapping... and voila. Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.
Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.
Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network
Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)
While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).
Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great. Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

I just bought a Netgear Router WNR 2000 v3 and installed it. I got inside the router and could set up a Network Name and security key. However, I can not access the internet when I chose a security password using WPA 2, WPA-PSK + WPA 2 PSK, or WPA/WPA 2. It only accesses the internet when I chose None.( no secured ).At this time, my network is unsecured because there isn't way I can access the internet when I create a security key using the 3 options the router offers.
Note : I have tried the 3 security options creating a key number and my computer connect to the wireless network but don't access the internet. It only access the internet when I select None ( no secured )

i purchased a Dell N7110 from Dell last week, and a few days later I purchased a NETGEAR PTV2000 wireless display adapter. It was my understanding the N7110 would support the PTV2000; my N7110 specs are below.Originally, I downloaded the required software (Intel WIDI) and drivers from the Intel website.
The laptop and PTV2000 adapter seemed to start fine in that the security code was given on my TV screen and I was able to enter it in the Intel WIDI software. Next step was to select "connect" to the adapter. The connection was initialized, as the green light on the PTV2000 was flashing and my TV screen said "connecting", then "connected". At the moment it said "connected", my laptop screen immediately flashed black, then restored itself approx one second later with the graphics on the laptop screen larger (larger icons) than normal. Approximately one second after this occurred, the connection was lost and the Intel software stated the following error: "unable to send desktop to wireless display, try restarting the application. If the problem persists, try re-installing the Intel WIDI software".
I retried the software numerous times with same results. I uninstalled then re-installed the Intel WIDI software and drivers with the same results. I also uninstalled and re-installed the software, but got them from the Netgear website, and then later from the Dell website (all had Intel WIDI software to download), which all ended in the same results (original problem still exists). After countless tries of running Intel WIDI, the program would on rare occasions, lock up and become unresponsive, while the green light on the adapter was still flashing (connection being made) and the TV message said "connected". The screen never changed from "connect", the desktop image never appeared on the TV, and I would have to use task manager to shut the program down.
Netgear and Intel websites do not address this issue, other than saying "try uninstalling then reinstalling the software", which I did countless times. Web searches hint the real problem is in the Graphics drivers on the Dell - I did find a thread on this site (Dell site) complaining the PTV2000 would not play DVDs or Blueray, and the person changed the Graphics driver, but now cannot get Windows to boot - I believe the Dell techs are currently mailing him software to correct this problem. Because of this, I am very reluctant to change the Graphics drivers as I do not want to cause the same issue on my machine...I have not had any problems with the wifi side of things, in that I am always able to initialize a "connect" without issues, and it tries to connect but just never completely does... tell me if the original problem I stated above can be corrected, and the steps I need to take, or should I return the PTV2000 and forget the whole wireless display idea?
Side Note: I can provide the exact softeware and driver links I used if required, but didn't as there really wasn't much choice - The Intel site, Netgear site, and DELL site all provided short instructions and only one download option; Win 7 32 or Win 7 64. I used Win 7 64 option.

I have Verizon DSL. Since I've gotten it turned on in my new apartment it's been randomly DCing, I had a tech come out and tell me it was because I'm too far from the central office(thought I'm only a mile from the office?) and I needed to call and get my mbps reduced from 10, to 5. So, I called and did that and I was still having the same issue. Today another tech came out, told me the same thing, but I needed to be reduced to 3, and left. I called and got it reduced again. They said it should be 3-5 and I was at 5-7. So, now my download speed is actually higher than it was when I was 5-7(it was at 3 mbps usually, now it's 5), but my ping has doubled. Pages are taking longer to load, and when I play any games online there's a noticeable delay. I have been DCing less often, but it's still happening.

I'm using 50MB/s hub provided by virgin media. The thing is everything works perfectly fine except the download speed on my personal unit worries me a bit. As I perform download speed test online, at my unit, I usually get the speed of 40 up to 49.7 MB/s, upload 0.7 - 1.5MB/s. However in case of downloading the same file from the same source other pc at our home network usually download it at twice or trice the speed my unit does. I'm positive that my card is capable of speeds up to 100MB/s.

I have QWEST DSL, and I am supposed to get 1mb + download speeds from them. When I talk to them on the phone they test my line at over 1mb and say any problems had to be on my end.
I have replaced my router and my network card. When I test my connection speed at this website CNET Bandwidth Meter: Online Speed Test - CNET Reviews
I get 1.2 mb/sec but I have never gotten better than 160 kb/sec download speed from any website I've downloaded from. Is this a software issue? Is my computer somehow throttling what it receives?
I did a Line Quality Test here DSL Reports and it is here: Line quality test packet loss and latency | DSLReports.com, ISP Information
I did three tests, and the bottom part failed 4 times out of 6, so the failures are repeatable. The data all looks comparable for each test on a cursory examination, not knowing what I am looking for.
I have no idea what this test means/indicates.
So my questions are:
1) What further information do I need to supply? (Assume I don't know how to do what you are asking me to do if it is in the least bit technical.)
2) Is my problem with my phone lines? I live in an older area and the lines have not been updated in decades so it may be that QWEST is claiming they can deliver more then they actually can.
At this point I suspect I will need to get cable in order to get decent download speed, QWEST doesn't offer service at the speed I get, so I can't opt for a lower price/slower speed option from them even though they are not delivering what I am promised.

About a week ago i started experiencing very slow download speeds... things like streaming online videos and having to wait which i have not had to do for the last 4 years. I did a speed test on multiple sites and my download speed comes out at about .2mbps and my upload is still where it should be at .6-.8mbps. I have a 12mbps connection so this does not make sense at all. Originally thinking it was malware, I formatted both my hard drives and did a clean install of windows 7 and it did nothing to resolve the issue. Could it be that my wireless card's radio is failing?

About 2 months or so ago, my upload speed just pretty much stopped working. Nothing changed with my PC/modem/router, so I don't know what happened. My download speed is FINE, fast like it's always been(over 20 Mbps). I can upload a file maybe 500KB or lower, but it takes several minutes. If I try to upload anything bigger, it doesn't work(errors/gets stuck).
It's not my PC because I have the same problem on my tablet and ipod. It's not the router because I tested it by just hooking up the modem directly to my PC.
At speedtest.net, it just gets stuck on the upload test and never gives me results.
I rent my modem from Comcast. Should I just bring this modem in and get a new one?
