I have a cable modem installed to my property but want to use my modem/router to go wireless. The proble is my cable modem output is a RJ45 and the router input is RJ11.
View 10 RepliesI have a new router (ASUS RT-N10)and It is asking me to direct connect my cable modem to my computer, and then find my MAC address via command prompt, and clone it to the new router.I can get to my command prompt, the problem lies in windows 7 and vista's (or mine) inability to realize that my network card is directly connecting to the modem. (No internet connection available, doesn't think anything is connected). I have tried on multiple machines to try and find my modem's mac address but it simply is not working.I want to know if I can find the mac address through the old router, or what I need to do to have windows 7 recognize I'm directly connecting the modem to the PC.

I had a working LAN/WLAN for my home & home office, and the modem I was using got fried by the storm. Strangely enough nothing else was affected..Anyway, I went out and bought an identical modem, and had it set up with Comcast. If I connect directly to the modem, everything works perfectly. But when I try to attach my router to the new modem, I have no connectivity over wifi OR hardwired to the router. According to the status light on the router, it can't find a connected modem.I reset the router back to factory settings, installed the newest firmware, and moved my DHCP pool out of the default range. I then power cycled the whole setup - twice - with no success.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought an ASUS Black Diamond Dual Band Wireless-N 600 Router (RT-N56U) to upgrade from my older router but I'm having a problem: It won't connect to my cable modem (via the WAN ethernet port), so I can't connect to the internet. [URL]
When I connect the router to my computer via ethernet cable, the light on the ethernet port of the router comes on (an orange LED light), but when I connect my cable modem (or computer) to the the router through the WAN ethernet port, the WAN port's LED does not come on at all and I keep getting an error message on my browser saying that I need to make sure the ethernet cable is connected.
I've tried three different ethernet cables, including the one that came with the router, with no luck (WAN LED lights never come on, so I assume that this means that there is no activity at all). I've also tried cloning the MAC address, restoring to factory default, updating the routers firmware, and holding the reset button on the modem for 15 seconds, among other things.
Also, something that might be worth noting: While one end is connected to my modem, if I plug the ethernet cord into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the router, the green LED instantly turns on but, as I said before, there's no activity when plugged into the WAN port. My modem is an Arris TM052G (DOCSIS 2.0) provided by my ISP, Time Warner Cable.
My New comcast cable modem will connect to the internet, as i am connected to it by ethernet right now, but my netgear router will not recognize it and get a link to the internet to get my existing LAN back up.

I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there anyway to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901? Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. Motorola Surfboard SB6120 modem;
NetGear WGR614 wireless router
I am able to connect with other devices (iPhone, Roku) to my wireless through the wireless router. My computer recognizes the broadband connection, but it won't connect to it. I get two errors when I try to connect:651: the modem has reported an error, and 638: the remote server is not responding in a timely fashion.I have tried connecting the ethernet cable directly to the modem, but I get the same results.Also, I have tried to cycle down the computer, router, then modem and turn them back on in reverse with no change in results.The connection worked until I clicked "disable connection" one day when I had trouble connecting (high traffic i think). Since then, the"home group" I set up originally with the connection wizard disappeared, and it had not been able to connect since then. When I try to connect I click on a small icon in the lower right that says, "not connected, connection available", then I click on the button to connect to broadband and get the errors described above.
Upgraded my E3000 from 1.0.02 to 1.0.04 and now I cant get an ip from my arris modem. I did the 30/30/30 reset and everything but no luck. I've had to plug the modem directly into the computer for now. Where can I find the 1.0.02 download or how can I fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am with Virgin media and have a home lab (2611 routers, 3550 switches, 2950s etc) which i usually just use for testing things on and practicing.
Now I tried to connect it to the internet and got some weird things happening.
I got NAT and DHCP client all setup correctly on the router (or so I think!) along with DNS settings but I still can't get Internet access.
My network is all setup right so that through using OSPF the router is the gateway (0.0.0.0 route) for all devices. Doing a traceroute confirms this.
Yet I never get any further than the router? I see IP nat translations ticking up as I send more requests but never get a webpage or a reply from any of the machines in my network.
HOWEVER... The router itself does get some replies from Google.co.uk and bbc.co.uk but doesn't seem to want to give anything else on the "inside" a response?

But after Cox fixed the outage, I have to reset the modem. The problem is I do not know when the outage is fixed. Sometimes, I reset the modem and call cox all day long. Now when i came back from work monday, i tried to log in to my computer. As it appears, i forgot my password... (same i use on everything, so i must have messed up inputting my pass)

It changes each time i reset it when i set it to bridged only mode but then i won't be able to connect other devices to it since it doesn't uses DHCP in bridged only mode. It changes back to the IP i had when i set it to router mode. I don't want to change my router settings to bridged only because it would disconnect the other devices in my house. Why my ISP assigns the same IP address when it's set to router mode but assigns different IPs when it's set to bridged only, how is this possible ?

The modem itself has a built-in WIFI (G) and one ethernet port, but not good enough for my purposes. She has an old laptop as well with Vista on it, and was trying to connect that to the WiFi. Let her buy the Linksys. Didnt solve the problem and he turned off the wireless security to connect the Vista laptop. That was somewhere July 2011. Since than I have setup MAC filtering to at least have the WiFi not completely open to the public.
