Business Wireless Solution With Expiry Date On User Password?
Jun 12, 2012
I am looking to add a new wireless network for our customers to use.I would like to cover multiple areas of the site. And if cheap enough the whole site.Ideally I would like a control panel I can use to create new passwords for every customer that wants to connect. I can then set an expiry date on the password after that it deletes the password. An extra would be if the person would have to sign an e-policy before being allowed to browse.

Currently we have the Synology DS212J system and that backups to the cloud as well. The problems are not being able to access it remotely easily, space, and the cloud integration is too slow and not reliable enough.
So we need a larger network, that is easily accessible remotely and backs up regularly. The main thing that will be taking up a lot of space over time is a lot of artwork files. A lot of these don't require on site network access, so if we had 30% storage local and the rest remote that would be fine, everything needs to be accessible remotely still though.
One thing I was looking into was Amazon storage gateway, it is pricey though so I'm wondering what other options there are. URL
Perhaps a larger NAS with different backup would work? It needs to run more seamless than the cloud is. We used Jungledisk before this which worked great with only a few users but we are now at 10+ users and growing.

I am running 802.1x using a cluster of ACS 5.2 appliances and Windows XP hosts using EAP-MSCHAPv2 over a PEAP tunnel. The PC are set to perform machine authentication and if authentication is successful, they are mapped to a specific VLAN based on their AD group memberships. The problem that I am encountering is when the machine password expires while a user has their laptop off the LAN. When they bring the laptop back to work and put it on the LAN, authentication fails and the laptop does not run through the authorization policy to determine what action to take. Looking at the microsoft site, I found this:
http:[url].....
This basically states that Microsoft is aware that Windows XP is not able to change machine passwords on login after the expiry period. They offer two solutions for a workaround:
1. Use EAP-TLS - I don't want to use certificates for machine authentication due to PCs dropping off the network when they are renamed due to the PC name on the certificate not matching the PCs actual name
2. Perform user based auth - Windows XP doesn't pause the netlogon process during bootup, therefore if the user VLAN changes when user authentication is performed, all statup scripts will fail.
This brings me to trying to perform a workaround directly on the ACS appliances after authentication fails.I have an access service setup that matches any machine authentication packets from PCs configured for machine based authentication. This service then maps the VLAN upon successful authentication. Since the authentication will not be successful, the process will fail before getting to the authorization policy.I have looked into forcing the policy to continue upon failure, however this advanced option is not available for PEAP authentication. Now,I am trying to determine if there is anyway to perform VLAN mapping for a host that fails machine authentication using a rule based result selection on my identity policy for the machine authentication, but this is not working. There really needs to be a way to force a policy to continue processing even when authentication to the domain fails for PEAP authentication.

Migrating from 4.2 to 5.2 acs and have noticed there is no expiration date per internal user added. We expire users at different times due to their time on site. Is there something that has to be added to get back this basic feature we had before?

The SMART Designs state that both the ESW500 and 300-series switches should not be used for deployments of over 100 IP phones. But now that both the UC560 can go up to 138 (128 IP phones) and the BE3000 can go up to 300 users is this design restriction still valid or is the Catalyst 2960 and above the only options?
The QPT is still showing both the 300- and ESW500 switches as options for all versions of the UC560, and the 300- and 2960 switches are shown as valid options in the LAN for the BE3000.

I have the WRT350N router. to access my usb storage link from within the LAN it asks for user id and password as I want it. but to access it from outside my LAN it just connects without asking for user id and password. My guess is it has something to do with shares and how they are setup. I can't figure out how to set it up so it asks for user id and password when attempting to connect to my storage link from the net?

Having just upgraded from a WRT54G to a E2500 all I can say is that I'm disappointed with Cisco.Having spent a few hours yesterday trying to resolve issues via Live Chat (ID 130105-001270 & 130105-002081) and spending more time today - I'm truly at wits end. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable with computers and networking.I'm not sure if anyone from Cisco's Tech staff sees these posts but I don't know where else to "complain" in hopes that the next software/firmware update resolves these problem(s).
The first is my router's setup screens are totally open when using my desktop. The desktop is hardwired to the router and has the Cisco Connect software installed. I open the Cisco software and go to advanced settings. There I'm shown what my router's name is and its password. This is really strange - why would you wish to display this information PRIOR to requesting username and password? However, once there you can go right into the setup screens by clicking OK.I have also entered these screens directly without being prompted for username/password by using 192.168.1.1 or my router.local via Internet Explorer 8 or Google Chrome. At other times I am denied access because IE cannot display page.I'm concerned because I can hide the Cisco Connect software however, anyone that uses my desktop has full access to my router via the web or Cisco Connect.
The second issue is that the password to enter the router and allow access to the internet IS THE SAME! When I had my WRT54G running I had one password (8 alpha characters) to enter setup screens. There was a router generated, 16 alpha/numeric character, password to allow outside devices such as laptops, TVs and game consoles access to the internet. When I set this router up I installed the 16 character password originally used so my laptop and Wii could connect without having to fool around with their settings. Everything was fine until I went into administration and changed the password to my old 8 character one. That is when I found out that the router uses this password setting under administration to control access to the internet AND access to the router settings!
I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE 8. I have ensured that my browser's history and caches are clear which they do when I shut IE down. I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 with the "proper" anti-virus and anti-malware software. My system is up-to-date.I have ensured that the router is running the latest firmware 1.0.05 build 2 and software 1.4.11299.0.I have seen other posts suggesting the removal of Cisco Connect however, I feel that this is a bandaid solution.I'm not professing to be a router technician however, I "feel" the problem might be the fact that the password issue is the problem. Since the same one is being used for both accessing the router and having the router grant access to the net, my desktop is allowed to access the setup screens without being prompted for username and password.

I haven't used my Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router for about 1 1/2 years and needed it now at a new place.I set a user name and password I've long forgotten for access to the web based security protocols for the modem and I've lost the disk for the control protocol program.I tried pressing the reset button to clear the modem and it took the WPA protocol off the modem so I can use it without any security but that's not a good thing. How do I get it freed up so I can get to the security protocols and put security back on my modem?

Just set-up a new X2000, loaded latest firmware 2.0.01, configured it via the web UI ('Browser based utility' as per the manual). Connected OK to my ADSL broadband by O2. Configured wireless, everything OK. Funny it doesn't need a user name, only a password, my prevoius WAG160N could be configured for both. Now I want to configure the Parental Controls, BUT apart from my computer name and an Android phone name, all I see in the Target Device ADD button pop-up are a list of repeated 'Network Device'. There seems no way to be able to distinguish which is which device (mix of XP & Win 7 PC's and HP Printer through a separate switch), as it does not show IP address or MAC.
I thought I may have better luck with the Cisco Connect software (which I didn't use to set-up the router). I downloaded the latest version 1.4.11194.0, and ran this on another computer with wireless. Apart from reconfiguring my static IP address to DHCP, and then connecting through DHCP, the software said it could not configure my router. So it never gets to a point where it installs any program on the computer so that I can configure Parental Controls. How do I get the router to show ALL the computer names in the list rather than 'Network Device' or is there a way to distinguish which 'Network Device' is which computer?

I just get to hands-on on my new WLC 5508?
1) I'm using a single subnet eg 192.168.1.0/24 for my wireless clients and i'm assigning them via the DHCP server from the WLC. As the clients are however made up of laptops and scanners, i would like to assign a range from 50-150 for the laptops and 151-250 for the scanners for easier identification. But it seems that from the WLC DHCP menu i'm not able to do this unless i segment them into a different network with different gateways.
2) Is there anyway to change the WLC user accounts password too? I dont seems to be able to find the option unless i delete the account and re-create it with the new password.

I need setting up a wireless home network. I have never done much networking, beyond linking two PCs directly together. This is my first time setting up a network that has multiple PC/devices accessing it.
It's a big house and has two floors. More importantly, it has impossibly thick walls. The walls are between 18 to 24 inches of solid stone (perhaps to repel a tank invasion?). I want to be able to get at least 15-20 Mbps to the furthest reaches of the top floor, in order to stream high quality HD video without a hitch.
I have settled on the ASUS RT-N16 router, unless a better option presents itself. It's one of the more decently priced high-end router available to me. It has decent signal strength (3rd on the MaximumPC router round-up), supports Tomato USB etc. I also intend to use the router to as NAS, plugging in an external HDD to one of the USB ports provided.
Despite its decent wireless strength, I doubt I will get close to the required Wifi throughput. Here is my plan to get around that. Let me know if there are any problems with it or if it can be done better. I intend to run an Ethernet cable from one of the router ports to the top floor, and attach a cheap .n router at the other end, to act as a wireless access point.I am unsure if this will meet all my requirements.
1) Will there be any problems with having one router connect to the other?
2) Will external HDD connected to the RT-N16's USB port, configured as a network share, be accessible as such to any device connecting to the secondary network?
3) What kind of cable will be needed to connect the two routers (provided this configuration is viable)? I remember that cable type used to depend on what's connecting to what, e.g. cross-crimped cable for attaching two computers directly without a hub or switch etc.). I don't know if these concerns are still valid.
4) Will I be able to access the configuration page of the primary router from devices connecting to the secondary router's network? I intent to run some apps on the primary router and would like to be able to check on them from the upper floor as well.
5) Will there be an impact of the speeds? The N16 as Gigabit Ethernet ports, which I doubt the cheap router will have. I don't think that should effect the speeds, but like I said, I have next to no experience in this area.

I'm currently moving to a 5ghz solution, due to my WGB's de authenticating due to possible interference. However, the area I have to cover is 350ft in length, with centralizing a 1242 with two Cisco Aironet 6-dBi Omnidirectional Antenna (AIR-ANT5160V-R), that leaves around 150 ft each way.
Do you think this is possible? I currently have a 12dbi high gain antenna on 2.4 right now, but I get the following:
Oct 3 18:05:26.359: %DOT11-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, Deauthenticating Station 68bc.0cb8.6a09
Oct 3 18:05:26.359: %DOT11-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, Deauthenticating Station 0000.bcc7.ef05
Oct 3 18:05:26.359: %DOT11-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, Deauthenticating Station 0000.bc58.c1ae
[code]...
I'm going to assume this is interference causing this, since we are in a factory with lots of noise. When the WGB is directly under the antenna/root bridge, there seems to be very little de authenticating.

I've been using a WAG320N for a year or so. I just installed a harddrive to the router and am trying to access the harddrive. One thread I found here has instructions for a Mac. It requires me to login using my browser - 192.168.1.1 - and then logon using my username and password. Huh? What username and password? I have a username and password that I use to go pass the firewall for wireless and wifi connection. Is it the same? I tried it but it didn't work. Is there another username and password for the router? I can't remember what that is, if there was one in the first place. I tried the defaults - linksys and admin - and no joy there either.
