i have a cascading network in my house of 2 linksys routers, I left the DHCP server activated on both of them and it seems to work fine, whats the point of turning it off?

Internet <-> Residential Gateway (RG) from ISP (OEM: Pace) [192.168.1.254/255.255.255.0] <-> RV180 [192.168.1.253/255.255.255.0] <-> SG500 switch [192.168.1.250/255.255.255.0] <-> rest of network.
I know this is a cascading LAN-to-LAN arrangement. The cable from the RG to the RV180 is from a LAN port on the RG to a LAN (not WAN) port on the RV180.
I eventually want to segment my network into a few VLANs from the RV180 down. I am aware most people would recommend DHCP on the "primary" router, but the RG is non-VLAN aware, so I figure I need to handle the DHCP off the RV180. At the same time, I have also opted not to do a LAN-to-WAN cascade because I want to retain the ability to configure the RG from the rest of the network and not have to cart a computer over to the RG to do it.
On the RG, I've disabled DHCP, and placed 192.168.1.253 in the DMZ.
On the RV180, I've enabled DHCP and put it in Router mode.
The issue is that I do not have any Internet connectivity. If I allow the computers in the network to receive IP addresses over DHCP, the default gateway that is communicated is 192.168.1.253, which is the RV180. If I configure static IPv4 information on my computers to point to 192.168.1.254, I am able to connect outside, as you would expect.
How can I get the RV180 to pass out DHCP IP addresses, but point to 192.168.1.254 as the default gateway? I thought the solution might be to create a default route (or something). I went to the static routes tab but it wouldn't let me enter 0.0.0.0 as a destination IP to route through 192.168.1.254.
Further down the line, is it possible for both the RG and the RV180 to connect directly to the SG500, along with the other nodes in my network? That way the RV180 only serves to maintain the VLANs and pass out IP addresses via DHCP, instead of having it be the choke through which everything goes through on the way out?
I've tried to cascade two Linksys routers, but It hasn't worked for me. The first one (which has cable-modem connection) is the brand new E4200, and the second one is the old WRT54GCv3.[code] However, the WRT54GCv3 doesn't get the IP address from the E4200's DHCP. I've also tried to connect them directly (without the PLC), even specifing an static IP on the second router, but I got the same results.I've to state I don't want to change the first router IP/gateway parameters because I have a web and game home server working with an static IP and I don't want to put it offline temporarily because of readjusting network parameters.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got two EA4500 routers connected via Ethernet. The primary router has DHCP enabled and the secondary has it disabled. IP address of primary is 192.168.1.1 and the secondary is 192.168.1.2.
I have set up guest access on both routers however only the primary router allows users to connect. When out of range of the primary router but in range of the secondary router the network is visible but when you try to connect to it, it only gives limited or no connectivity message and can't connect to the internet.
Is it possible for the guest network access to follow the same pattern as the secure network, i.e. the same network throughout the house?
I am trying to find an effective way to extend the wireless signal across our home. I have tried various different solutions. Currently, I have an e4200 primary router that is cascaded with two additional e1500 routers that have been configured as access points. The Linksys support team hosted my computer and configured the devices. The e1500 routers are connected via ethernet wires running through the walls. And, this seems to be working well. Here's my question. The e1500 routers are configured with different SSID names, which Linksys advised was required to avoid conflicts in communications from the three router devices. Is there any way to configure this set up or something similar so that the entire wireless network has the same SSID and is seamless. In the current configuration, I have to specifically connect to the primary router or one of the two access points.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a combined modem/router that was supplied to me by my ISP, and I want to connect a second router (Linksys) to it, because we share internet with the backhouse and the one router does not reach far enough. All of the hardware is working, but I cannot get the Linksys router to connect to the internet. Here's the stats:
The main router is a SmartRG, Powered by ClearAccess Model: SR300N I'm not sure what other information here is pertinent.
The secondary router is Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model: WRT54G
The main router works without a hitch, so that's not the problem. I have the second router connected through one of the output slots from the main router, into the internet connection slot in the Linksys. Even hardwiring a computer into the Linksys doesn't work, so it seems like the actual router itself isn't connected.
Do I have to hard wire both routers to use cascading routers technique? I've been reading up on how to do this, but have not yet quite tried. I know someone will say extender and/or repeater, but I want to know if I can use a second router to extend the wireless signal further; i.e., bounce it from modem/gateway/wireless router (dlink) to wireless router (linksys wrt160n) then to my laptop? I have to go from one building to another and currently the wireless signal is quite weak (hence, someone will likely say repeater/extender). I already have the linksys. The dlink belongs to someone else, but I have permission to access through their dlink. I can do the initial setup, connecting LAN (main router - dlink) to WAN (2nd router - linksys), but I cannot leave them connected.

And plug one cable from main network to the LAN port of the additional routers.So we basically use that additional routers only as a access point for WIFI.But what I wonder is if it's possible for me to use the additional routers with the same feature as of the main routers i.e. Enabling DHCP server so that it too can give its own DHCP ip address.

I have a RVS4000 router with DHCP enabled and in router mode.
The LAN is 192.168.2.x. The RVS4000 static IP address is 192.168.2.8
The router is not the RVS4000 and is at 192.168.2.1
The RVS4000 dhcp is assigning it's clients a default gateway of 192.168.2.8 instead of what I want 192.168.2.1. How can I get the RVS4000's DHCP server to assign another IP address other than its own as the default gateway to its DHCP clients?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently trying to do a cascading LAN-LAN, my primary router is a d-link, my second router is a linksys 150N, I connected an ethernet cable to one of the 1-4 ports in the second router(150N with DD-WRT firmware), I tried logging into the 150N via 192.168.1.1(I did a hard reset so I have to get in and change it to 192.168.1.2) but I think i am going directly to the primary router. I tried connecting the 150N(secondary) directly to change the address to 192/.2 but I dont get anything, seems the internet connection to the router is not working. is there any other way? I had this working but I forgot the password and had to do a hard reset(this is a network back at my parents, I am here for the holidays) the way I had it working was LAN-LAN, Im not sure if the internet port for the 150N is damaged.
I tried connecting the internet cable from the 1st router to the internet port of the 2nd(150N) and didnt get anything.
I am about to think that maybe my 150N is faulty or at least the internet connection throught the blue port is not working.

So far I can see dhcp requests coming from the R1 and dhcp server on R2 replies with the dhcp offer but PC is not getting any ip.
I have a RV042 router. The problem that I am having with it is that the DHCP is giving out the wrong Default Gateway and DNS Server. There is no option to change the DHCP server IP on any of the settings pages on the router. I am begining to think that there might not be a way to do it. I see that there is an option for the DNS under the DHCP page but the Public IP that is being handed out is not the one on that page. I also have 2 WAN connections hooked up as well a DSL link and a Cable link (the cable link is the primary one).
The following information is provided in an effort to resolve this issue:
IP of Router 10.0.0.2
IP of DHCP Server (the one that is being handed out):10.0.0.1
IP of DNS (the one that is being handed out): 10.0.0.11
What I want to it be.

Linksys BEFSR41 4.2 Main router 192.168.2.1, if I cascaded a second Linksys BEFSR41 4.2 LAN to LAN 192.168.2.2 would I be able to port forward on the second router? 1. login into RV220W admin web
2. Create a VLAN, id 201
3. Go to "Multiple VLAN subnets", select the VLAN, click edit
4. Enter following info:
IP Address: 172.16.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP Mode: DHCP Server
Domain Name: Cisco
Starting IP Address: 172.16.2.100
Ending IP Address: 172.16.10.254
Primary DNS Server: 172.16.0.1
Leave rest of settings with default value.
DNS proxy is enabled
5. Press Save button. The UI shows text "IP Address Range -".
Expected result: RV220W shall save the setting and make use of 172.16.0.0 subnet in IP pool. By the way, the error message "IP Address Range -" seems incompleteI tried same setting on netgear FVS318N (very similar settings to RV220W), it accepts 172.16.0.0/16 as DHCP IP pool and works.RV220W has great feature set meets my needs. Its UI is slow and sometime dashboard freezes, which I can live with comparing to features. But DHCP server IP pool can't be class B is huge limitation to me.

pf sense -> untangle -> switch <- N600
the N600 is just an access point and does no DHCP. The primary wireless network gets IP no problem but the guests are not getting an IP. I'm assuming the N600 has no way of issuing an IP on the guest network. how to set a DHCP server on the guest network and have a static route to the pfsense firewall from that network.
I just moved to Auckland, NZ from the USA to go to school at the university here, and am having a problem connecting to the internet in the university residence hall in which I am living.Wifi is not available in the residence halls, so we need to use an Ethernet cable. When I plug in my computer, the network adapter icon says Identifying for a while then settles on Unidentified Network with no internet access, the IP is 169.x.x.x.When I try to release and renew the IP, it says unable to contact your DHCP server, request has timed out".I've tried multiple Ethernet cables, both brand new.I tried connecting to a port in a friend's room in the same building, and even in a classroom on campus, and both had the same result.Naturally after all that I assumed my NIC somehow died overnight while I traveled here, so I went to a computer repair shop expecting to have some hardware replaced, but we plugged it in there and it worked immediately so they weren't sure what to tell me.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFiOS gave me an Actiontec router that every other day is getting into a state where it refuses to give out IP addresses via DHCP. I have to reset the router to get it to work again.This seems ot have started in the last year, I assume due to some piece of equipment I added, or perhaps the VPN software or Windows 7 installed on my work laptop. I've not been able to figure out what is tripping up the Actiontec router, so I decided to try moving the DHCP function over the WRT610N that I have. I basically had the WRT610N setup without DHCP enabled, no NAT and no RIP, so it was basically just working as an access point. I left the Actiontec at 192.168.1.1 and assigned 192.168.1.2 to the WRT610N on the LAN side, while the WAN side is left disconnected.
I disabled DHCP on the Actiontec and enabled it on the WRT610N. I also set the DNS server to 192.168.1.1 so it would go to the Actiontec for name resolution. Using nslookup from a command prompt on a PC wireless connected to the WRT610N, I can see that names are indeed getting resolved. However, it looks like the WRT610N is setting itself up as a the gateway at 192.168.1.2. When trying to ping something out on the net, I get a message back saying that 192.168.1.2 is reporting the address as unreachable.
I assume this is because the WRT610N is handing out its own address (192.168.1.2) as the gateway. Is there anyway to get the WRT610N to hand out a different gateway address than itself? Optionally, is there a way to get the WRT610N to route requests coming to it over the Actiontec?I suppose I could just ditch the Actiontec altogether, but it seems a bit easier to use to setup port forwards and the like for various servers we have running. It also has a coax MoCA interface which I believe our FiOS set-top boxes use for their internet connectivity, so I don't want to lose that.
The e4200 1.0.03 DHCP server appears to be quite buggy. After configuring a static IP / reservation for a client which already had a dynamic IP from the pool, the e4200 continued to offer this client its pool IP. However, the DHCP client listing in the e4200 showed the client having the static IP even though it was still being offered that pool address.This may sound like user error, but I can assure you, it is not. I have had a very frustrating experience with this product, and rather than fool with tech support again, I ran `tcpdump -e -s1600 -n -vvvv -i eth0 port bootpc or port bootps` to absolutely rule out a mistake on my part, bug in the DHCP client, etc. I found that the client was always offered that old IP, even thought the e4200 status display showed the "new" static one, after doing a DHCPDISCOVER without requesting a specific IP. This condition persists across e4200 reboots even after having the client release its lease!I finally was able to resolve this by forcing the client to request the static IP from the e4200.This is unquestionably a bug in the DHCP server, and additionally, the user interface does not show the real state of the underlying DHCP leases held by clients which have static addresses / reservations. Troubleshooting this condition is well beyond the abilities of the average user.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWe have a SBS 2003 server with two NIC's, one for the internal LAN and the other connecting to the WAG160Nv2 that is hooked up to the internet.The internal LAN clients are all getting IP addresses from the DHCP server in the SBS Server (192.168.16.XXX). The DHCP server is sat at 192.168.16.2.The only thing connected to the LAN ports on the WAG160Nv2 is the Internet facing NIC from the server.What I want to do is to get the WAG160Nv2 to give IP addresses to Wireless connections going through the router, can I configure the DHCP relay option on the WAG160Nv2 to do this, I have looked at the DHCP relay option but it doesn't seem to work, my wireless connections are getting private 169.254.xxx.xxx addresses.Also is there anything I can do to make the wireless more Apple friendly, iPhones and iPads drop of the wireless frequently, that's why I trying a different approach.

I have the unit set up to provide two dns servers to the clients, but the 4200 always provides itself as a third and it uses my cable providers dns servers. I am using a dns based filtering service to prevent certain material from being accessed within my network as the first two resolvers. So long as both or one of the provided servers is working it doesn't fall back to the unfiltered third, but I would prefer to remove it entirely.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Linksys E4200v2 router and updated the firmware to 2.0.26.124551. The DHCP server is turned on however, it won't issue any IP addresses. I have to set IP reservations for all of my devices in order for the router to give them an IP address. This includes my printer, xbox360 and 2 computers. I'm also having this problem with the wired and wireless lan.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought an e4200. I was using a LinkSys WRT54GS running DD-WRT alternative firmware.
One feature that I really liked in DD-WRT was the ability to assign static IP leases from the DHCP server. I liked having all of my devices running with a predictable, known IP address on my network. I have a Home Theater PC, and various controller applications that run on iPhones, etc. - some pretty homebrewed. Configuring the firewalls, etc. was much easier with IP address based controls.
Is there a way to achieve the same within the e4200's stock firmware?
