Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5520 - Filter Is Not Allowing To Access Certain Websites
Aug 20, 2012
We have a Cisco ASA 5520 and Web sense. I added a filter but it seems like it is still not allowing us to access a certain website from most of the machines however some machines with the same configuration work on the DMZ. Accessing website tells us:
"Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete".
Filter I applied on the firewall:
filter url except 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 64.18.218.0 255.255.255.0 allow
filter https except 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 64.18.218.0 255.255.255.0 allow

We have a Cisco wireless infrastructure in place that includes a guest network with its own subnet that is a sub interface of the inside interface on our ASA 5520. There are no routes for it to be allowed access to the internal subnets. So it can only access the internet. This is primarily used by the public, but we have several non employee personnel that we only want to give internet access and force them to access the internal network through our clientless SSL vpn portal or through other internet facing internal resources such as webmail.I have done packet traces from within the ASA and the break appears to be there is no ACL allowing the traffic back into the network once the web resource replies to the request and the traffic is attempting to come back into the network from the web resource. Is that as clear as mud?
I know that this has to be a common problem and a way around this is to allow the guest wireless network access to the internal network but only for the select resources that they require. And that this can be done seemlessly by network specific routes and or alternate DNS entries, but I would like to keep this simple and just allow them to access the web resource, webmail and VPN, from the guest wireless using internet DNS servers without route trickery.

I'm running into this issue on an ASA 5520 running version 8.2(2)9 and ASDM version 6.2(1).
I have an ACL denying traffic to a certain IP range and the logging level set to Debugging. The hit count is rising quite rapidly but when selecting "Show Log" the Real-Time Log Viewer opens with a value of 0x13d0ee2a in the "Filter By" field and no logs are ever shown.
Logging is enabled globally and Logging Filters on ASDM is set to Debugging as well.
how I can get the RTLV working?

How can we host 300+ secure (https) websites using a couple of public IP's on an ASA5520 with AIP SSM-20 and with as few certificates as possible?
Summary of set-up:
We currently host a number of websites using an ASA5520 and use host headers, so have 6 servers with around 40 hosted URL's. The number of websites is due to double very soon and we will need to use more of our public IP's. We can see that we will will run out of public IP's very soon especially as there is a project in the pipeline that has a likely requirement to host an additional 200+ websites.
Each of these websites are required to use https and therefore each must have a certificate which will be very expensive. PCI DSS (payment card industry data security standard) is causing us issues because we had hoped to post the certificates on the firewall (one for each physical server) and then run the data UN-encrypted from the firewall to the relevant web servers, so that we could use one certificate for lots of websites and therefore reduce our certificate costs, however is not best practice to do this due to the data being unencrypted within the firewall and on the DMZ network and therefore potentially open to compromise. I doubt that we could install 200+ certificates on a 5520 and then re-encrypt the data to the web servers especially seeing as we also have an IPS card that is already running at around 70-80% util due to the performance overhead.
BTW - We also have an in-line Breach WAF which will be required to inspect the packets (certificates to be installed on the WAF to allow this).

We had an ASA 5510 as a firewall in our environment, and there is a requirement to access an ftps server from our location. Currently from the server location they configured everything by allowing our public ip to their server and gave the following details to access ftp. Please suggest which traffic needs to be allowed in our ASA to access the ftp server address as mentioned above. From my initial analysis, it's found that 989 port is also enabled for the access, but that was not mentioned by them.

I have an ASA 5550 at our main site with an external ethernet interface to our ISP for internet access. I would like to allow 10.100.41.x/24 http / https access but block this network's access to all other internal networks including 172.17.x.x,, 10.100.1 - 40.x, and others. I'm having trouble identifying what IP address to use as the desitination for the permit rule for access to the internet. The rule that comes after the permit is to deny 10.100.41.x/24 access to internal network addresses.

I'm a college student working on a lab involving a Cisco PIX 501 Firewall.
My project involves 1 computer and a firewall. My goal is to use the firewall to allow access to the internet for that computer which uses a static IP 192.168.1.5 and ONLY for that IP address. The firewall is connected to the internet.
I have the computer hooked up to the firewall with the serial and using hyper terminal to enter commands. I think I need to use access lists in order to deny traffic on those ports for those particular hosts. I can't figure out exactly how I need to set it up.
What I need to do is permit internet access for 192.168.1.5 alone. Any other IP should not be able to access the internet.
I tried:
access-list 1 permit tcp host 192.168.1.5 any eq 80
access-group 1 in interface inside
I cannot access the internet using the computer with 192.168.1.5. The goal is to be able to access with that IP and no other.

I have a PIX 501 with 6.2 FW. The firewall inside network is connected to a Windows server (Mailserver). I can get access to most websites on all clients as well as on the server. However, there are some particular websites, such as facebook.com that the server and all but one client cannot access. I get a "cannot display the webpage" in internet explorer.
I have disabled the Windows firewall and AV. I have also scanned for any malware and no malware was found.
I found on the forums a "fixup protocol dns" solution, but my PIX version does not support it.
Below is my config:
PIX Version 6.2(2)

I have a problem with PIX 506E that meets the version 6.1, and in an simple computer network equipment seems to behave in strange ways because some web sites do not open or very open slow thereby its operation impracticable. On the other hand other web sites open normally.
Querying the web site of the Cisco, I found several documents discussing the same problem but in a later version ( 7.0 ), not in this version 6.1.
I've tried removing the pix from the network , not the error occurred, again insert pix however tested only with a machine, without the rest of the network and the problem persists

My company has a peer to peer network of 10 personal computers without a server. Operating systems from Windows XP to Vista. I've recently installed a Cisco RV120W Wireless-N VPN Firewall. It's configured in DHCP Server Mode with printers/copiers that have static IPs below the DHCP range.
I'm having a problem with certain stations being used for personal networking, shopping, etc. during business hours. Consequently I would like to limit internet access on these stations. However, some internet access is required because of online database software that's an integral part of our business. I've been reading in the Administration Guide about URL Blocking. Would it be possible to give static IPs to certain stations and then limit their internet access to 1 or 2 specific websites?
FYI, I've read about the Trusted Domains and Blocked Keywords but cannot quite understand how to parley this into the solution I need.

I have an ASA 5520 in my company which does all our NAT and Firewall access control. Currently there is a rule in place to allow an incoming connection on port 2222 from a specific ip address to allow access to a web app our developers created. This is a test before the web app is released live. Now the web app can communicate with the specific address and port but the incoming connection on port 2222 isn't getting through. Everything looks great in the firewall but how can I log any hits this ACL takes to identify any potential problems?

Abruptly internet access disappeared. It's a router issue, none of the computers here can connect. Further, I can't access the router through a browser - 192.168.0.1 results in a "Firefox cannot connect" message. I've tried resetting the DNS to no avail. I'm typing via cell phone and it's annoying, but I'm willing to try about anything.

We have an ASA 5520 in HA. (version 8.X upgraded to 9.1 (1))We used Wizzard to configure VPN clientless and portal. Also, configured manually we have the same issue: We can access to the portal using IP address of Lan interface but not with outsides (2 ISP). The clientless VPN is enable on the public interface and no packets rejected in logs.We try to modify the Crypto map created by default to replace "any" to "any" by "any" to "our public IP" (We see that is recommended by Cisco) It works for 10 minutes.(strange..) but after 10 minutes the active member crashs.. only a reboot with previous configuration was good.We try to investigate but each time we modify Crypto maps, the firewall is going bad.

We are moving from a different vendor to ASA 5520s. So far my "training" for Cisco consists of s Cisco press book, some white papers and guides, this website, and a bunch of mistakes. So, I have what is probably a pretty basic question for most folks.
What is the difference between Firewall Access Rules and ACL/ACE? And when to use which?
for example: on my ASA 5520s I've set up an Interface for my internal LAN: 172.16.x.x., a DMZ 192.168.2.0/24, and an interface for the Internet side. The 5520 is set up as a routing firewall betwen my internal lan, DMZ, and Internet.
If I want to allow my internal users Internet access for http and https would I use a Firewall Access rule? For most of my rules allowing outbound access from my 172 LAN and DMZ and inbound access to devices in my DMZ can I mostly utilize the Firewall Access Rules?

I've got what is probably a very basic question - but i can't figure it out.I have: Internet (ADSL) -> 2851 (ADSL wic) -> 5520 -> internal LAN (192.168.1.x/24)
The asa has just replaced a Checkpoint firewall.I've set up the ASA to the point where all hosts on the internal LAN have internet access (using a dynamic PAT on that network). This all works well.
The problem i have is i am trying to allow access from the internet to an internal host on a specifc TCP port (as i had done on the Checkpoint) but i'm getting:
Asymmetric NAT rules matched for forward and reverse flows; Connection for tcp src outside:111.111.111.11/52135 dst inside:192.168.1.252/5555 denied due to NAT reverse path failure
From what i have read i need to add a NAT exemption for this particular use case - to avoid the dynamic NAT i have setup, but im not sure how to do so.I'm running 9.1 on the ASA, no VPNs yet. Just this basic setup.
