Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Distribute A Search Domain In Addition To IP Address / DNS Server Information

Feb 29, 2012

I have just installed and configured a new RVS4000 with VPN (currently running firmware V2.0.0.3), and have enabled the DHCP Server service. I wanted to be able to distribute a search domain in addition to the IP address and DNS Server information (as I have done with other devices that include a DHCP Server), but cannot seem to locate where or how I might do that with the RVS4000.

DNS / DHCP Domain Controller Addition

Feb 10, 2011

I am having trouble adding a computer to the Domain Controller. I have a cable modem running into a di-524 router. The router has DHCP and DNS relay disabled. I set the LAN IP Address of the router to 192.168.2.1. The router is connected to a switch with 10 pc's and a server running 2003. The server has an IP Address of 192.168.2.2. I setup a DHCP server inside 2003 with a scope of 192.168.2.100-192.168.2.199. Under scope options the router is set to 192.168.2.1 and DNS Servers is set to 192.168.2.2 (the ip address of the domain controller). When I try to add the computer it cannot contact the domain controller. Is there something wrong with my DHCP config or DNS?

Cisco Routers :: No Access Information Logged For PPTP Server On RV042?

Nov 25, 2012

I have configured PPTP Server on RV042, and created 3 accounts. I am able to connect from Windows PC without any problems.

In the router's logging utility, there doesn't appear to be any log entries indicating either successful or failed attempts to connect to PPTP server. The only access logs I see are for access to the router's configuration utility. Is there a way to view PPTP access in the router system log?

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Won't Get WAN DHCP Address

Aug 1, 2012

I just tried replacing a cheap domestic router/switch with an RVS4000 V2 on our work network.  This has a WAN connection to a cable modem for internet access via a dynamic IP address.

When I first connected the RVS4000 it got a WAN ip address via DHCP of 192.168.100.11.  This is the type of IP address we get when there is an upstream problem with our ISPs cable network, and sure enough we had no internet access.  The RVS4000 was set to use DHCP on the WAN interface.  So I logged a support call with our ISP but they said there were no problems at their end.

I then swapped the RVS4000 out for the original router.  This worked fine and got a WAN DHCP address of 77.xxx.yyy.zzz as it should.  Swapped back to the RVS4000 and back to the same problem of getting a 192.168... address.

So, I downloaded the latest firmware from Cisco, which was V2.0.3.2 and flashed the RVS4000.

I then tried again connecting the RVS4000 to the cable modem but this time it would not get any WAN DHCP address at all.  On the Status/Gateway page of the web interface it said that the WAN interface was down.  However, on the front panel there was a yellow light indicating a live connection on the internet port.

Domain Name Registrar Pointed To Home Web Server On Private IP Address Behind

Jun 6, 2011

I have purchased a domain name through a registrar. I currently have a hyper v lab set up at home with a domain controller/dns server and am thinking of starting a web server on either Apache or IIS on a different virtual machine. I want to point my domain name to my home web server. What do I do I have to do at my domain name registrar? I have to point a type of dns record to my home server's public IP and maybe vice versa.I have a static IP at home. Do I have to create some DNS records pointing from my domain name registrar to my server at home using my PUBLIC ip address? If possible please provide specifics on which records I should point to my home server PUBLIC ip address and if any DNS changes need to be made within my domain. Also if any records on my home domain (windows ad domain setup)

I seem to be able to find a lot of info on Apache and IIS but not a whole lot of info on how your web domain name registrar relates to your own web server . I'm not really interested on IIS or Apache specifics but more interested in the fundamentals of how a domain name registrar (GoDaddy, or any other registrar/host) needs to be pointed to your web server and vice versa. I know a lot of people on forums tend to point to links or tell me to go to google but I find it hard to learn that way.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Doesn't Give Out IP Address To Client?

Aug 16, 2011

RVS4000 router doesnt give out an IP address to a client connecting with QVPN v1.303 (or v1.4..- tried that too), connection seems good, router logs the connection and tracks its duration etc but client side does not get an IP from the RVS4000 side -keeps local LAN ip + there is no access to the remote shares etc. RVS 4000 has DHCP enabled. Client side subnet is different to the VPN side. VPN users are setup correctly (Router logs the user as connected) . Port 443 is not setup in port forwarding. (posted in LAN Routing & Switching 2 days ago but I got no response so I thought Id try here !)

MSCHAPv2 / Setup Secure VPN Server Using Windows Server 2012 Without Domain?

Jan 10, 2013

i've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication

Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.

However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.

My question is this: Is there a way to setup a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

So if the PPTP server is enabled, and "Block MAC address not on the list" is enabled under the DHCP settings, will the PPTP client get an IP address?Similarly, if the PPTP server is enabled and the range of IP addresses configured on the PPTP server screen is outside the IP range of the router due to a subnet mask (like 255.255.225.248 for example), will the IP still be assigned to the PPTP client? If assigned, will that IP have any connectivity to the LAN?

Cisco Routers :: Get The RVS4000s DHCP Server To Assign Another IP Address?

The router is not the RVS4000 and is at 192.168.2.1

The RVS4000 dhcp is assigning it's clients a default gateway of 192.168.2.8 instead of what I want 192.168.2.1. How can I get the RVS4000's DHCP server to assign another IP address other than its own as the default gateway to its DHCP clients?

Cisco Routers :: RV220W Built-in DHCP Server Can't Save Class B IP Address Pool

Mar 28, 2012

I was trying to set a DHCP pool with 127.16.0.0/16 with RV220W, however, RV220W UI can't save it. It displays "IP Address Range -"Step to reproduce: (it is 100% reproducible)

1. login into RV220W admin web

2. Create a VLAN, id 201

3. Go to "Multiple VLAN subnets", select the VLAN, click edit

4. Enter following info:
IP Address: 172.16.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP Mode: DHCP Server
Domain Name: Cisco
Starting IP Address: 172.16.2.100
Ending IP Address: 172.16.10.254
Primary DNS Server: 172.16.0.1
Leave rest of settings with default value.
DNS proxy is enabled

5. Press Save button. The UI shows text "IP Address Range -".

Expected result: RV220W shall save the setting and make use of 172.16.0.0 subnet in IP pool. By the way, the error message "IP Address Range -" seems incompleteI tried same setting on netgear FVS318N (very similar settings to RV220W), it accepts 172.16.0.0/16 as DHCP IP pool and works.RV220W has great feature set meets my needs. Its UI is slow and sometime dashboard freezes, which I can live with comparing to features. But DHCP server IP pool can't be class B is huge limitation to me.

Cisco VPN :: RVS4000 As VPN Switch Server?

May 26, 2013

In the past a used an RVS4000 as a VPN server for my company, but since I recently moved my company to China I would like to use it for a different purpose if it's possible. What I would like to do is the following:

Use an ADSL router to create a LAN networkConnect my RVS4000 to the ADLS router and use it as a switch instead of a routerUse the RVS4000 to connect to a VPN server abroad over L2TP or PPTP . This would allow me to enjoy the best of 2 worlds:

Enjoy the full broadband speed of the LAN network created by the ADSL router for normal internet useHave a separate wired connection permanently connected to VPN giving access to company email etc...  My question is: Is this actually possible?

Can the RVS4000 be used as a switch? When used as a switch, can the RVS4000 still be used a 'VPN receiver'?  I'm possible trying to do the impossible, because I would have to have the ADSL router have to act as a DHCP server and disable DHCP on my RVS4000 in which case it is probably impossible to have the RVS4000 act as an L2TP/PPTP VPN receiver.

Nov 8, 2012

I have a 891 router setup as the local DNS server and external lookups from connected devices (and the router cli) work fine. I'm having problems getting internal host lookups working though.

this is relevent part of the config, router ip address is 192.168.100.9:

no ip dhcp use vrf connected
ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.100.1

[Code]....

If I put rearswitch. (i.e. add a single full stop at the end of the hostname) it resolves fine. The same behaviour happens with other hosts defined with the ip host command. Is it possible to use local hostnames without a domain name or full stop?
