Cisco Routers :: RV016 PPTP Server And Block MAC Address

Apr 2, 2013

So if the PPTP server is enabled, and "Block MAC address not on the list" is enabled under the DHCP settings, will the PPTP client get an IP address?Similarly, if the PPTP server is enabled and the range of IP addresses configured on the PPTP server screen is outside the IP range of the router due to a subnet mask (like for example), will the IP still be assigned to the PPTP client? If assigned, will that IP have any connectivity to the LAN?

Cisco Routers :: RV180 PPTP VPN Server Limitation?

Oct 29, 2012

For the past week, I have tried to setup the PPTP VPN server on the RV180. The setup was straight forward, but I could not log-on no matter what I tried. I decided to call Cisco small business support, and as I was talking to the engineer, it mysteriously started to work. I was puzzled and somewhat embarrassed because I'd hate to admit it was an id10t problem on my part. As I tried a few different configurations, I began to realize there might be a limitation in the RV180 PPTP VPN server with the current firmware (
In short, the RV180 PPTP only works with subnet. My setup has 3 vlans: vlan1 in subnet, vlan2, and vlan3 My originally plan was to keep vlan3 isolated by disabling inter-vlan routing, but I needed a way to manage a couple of devices on vlan3 remotely, thus I wanted to setup a VPN in the subnet. This turned out to be the reason why it never worked before. Today when I called Cisco support, I assigned the PPTP VPN server a ip range, and it worked. Later, I tried assigning or ip addresses to the PPTP VPN server, and they both failed to work. I created another test vlan4 with subnet, and assigned the PPTP VPN server to that vlan, and it worked again.
I'd like to mention that I already configured the subnet with a few devices before I replaced my router with RV180, and I don't want to have to change and test the setup of all the devices. Another reason I want to have my VPN server outside the range is that it's way too commonly used by wifi hotspots that it increases the chance of wifi and vpn in the same subnet.
I can test a few more configurations, but I think the results will be the same. Perhaps Cisco should test the RV180 in the lab to confirm what I found.

Cisco Routers :: RV016 - Connecting To VPN Internal Server Not Working?

Jan 6, 2013

We have 3 internet links from different providers connected to configured WAN 1,2,3 in RV016. A remote client needs to connect to a internal VPN Server behind RV016, so we use one-to-one NAT to publish the internal server ip to a Valid IP from WAN3 and setup protocol binding in Multi wan to all trafic (TCP and UDP) from the internal VPN address exits with WAN3.
So, the remote client tries to connect to VPN using this ip Address from WAN3 and sometimes work and sometimes not. It's clear to us that the problem lies in the response from RV016 not coming always from WAN3, because if we disconnect the two other links (WAN1 and 2) Its works flawless.

Cisco Routers :: RV 120W Port Forwarding 1723 To A PPTP Server

Sep 11, 2011

We have just acquired a Cisco RV120W Firewall Router and we are experiencing issues with this router. I've read some threads related to port forward issue with RV120W before writing this new topic.
We have 2 locations (site A and site B) connected with a Site to Site VPN (PPTP) running under Windows Server 2008 R2 with TMG 2010. This Site to Site VPN worked very well until we replaced our old router with the RV120W at site B. Since this moment, our engineers are not able to make the site to site VPN work again. The TMG box are located just behind the router.
We have followed some threads about Port Forwarding but it did not solve our issue (others port forwarding rules for RDP for example work). Our RV120W is running the last stable firmware ( provided by Cisco.

Cisco :: 2504 - Hard Wire Connected To RV016 For DHCP Address From WLC

Oct 30, 2012

Ok, so with my WLC2504 implementation, I use the 4 ports to physically segment my wireless networks. Here is my setup:
Port 1 (Management) - Internal IP so I can manage the WLC from our internal network (Untagged)

Port 2 - Connected to our core stack and tagged with VLAN 14
Port 1 and 2 are both connected to the same core stack
Port 3 - Connected to a RV016 Linksys which is connected to our fiber connection to the outside (Untagged) - External connection for laptops
Port 4 - Connected to a Linksys wireless router (with wireless disabled) (Untagged) - External connection for smartphones
The TAC engineer I talked to just told me that I can only have one untagged interface on the WLC. If they are physically connected to different switches, thus physically segmenting the network, should it matter?
The wireless works just fine. What I am having issues with is getting a client that is hard-wire connected to the RV016 to get a DHCP address from the WLC.

Mar 28, 2012

I was trying to set a DHCP pool with with RV220W, however, RV220W UI can't save it. It displays "IP Address Range -"Step to reproduce: (it is 100% reproducible)

1. login into RV220W admin web

2. Create a VLAN, id 201

3. Go to "Multiple VLAN subnets", select the VLAN, click edit

4. Enter following info:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
DHCP Mode: DHCP Server
Domain Name: Cisco
Starting IP Address:
Ending IP Address:
Primary DNS Server:
Leave rest of settings with default value.
DNS proxy is enabled
5. Press Save button. The UI shows text "IP Address Range -".

Expected result: RV220W shall save the setting and make use of subnet in IP pool. By the way, the error message "IP Address Range -" seems incompleteI tried same setting on netgear FVS318N (very similar settings to RV220W), it accepts as DHCP IP pool and works.RV220W has great feature set meets my needs. Its UI is slow and sometime dashboard freezes, which I can live with comparing to features. But DHCP server IP pool can't be class B is huge limitation to me.

Cisco Routers :: Failing RV016 Or ISP?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a rv016 that's been in 24x7 operation since I bought it a few years back.  It is out of warranty.  It is connected to three cable modems on WANs 1-3.  Behind it are a bunch of PCs getting IPs via DHCP.  There is a gateway to gateway vpn tunnel setup on wan3 to a rv082 at another site.  There is a forwarding entry for http to an internal http server.  Everything else is pretty much default.
The router is primarily used to aggregate bandwidth for uploading large numbers of photos.  The systems behind the router initiate the uploads and the router automatically load balances the outgoing bandwidth.
This was all working fine until just recently.  The ISP is Knology who is upgrading each of the 8m/768k cable modems to 25m/5m.  They are also moving from DOCSIS 1 to DOCSIS 3.  They are currently in the middle of this upgrade and have upgraded the modems to DOCSIS 3 as well as the speeds to 12m/2m.  The problem is that the rv016 Network Service Detection, which is set to "Default Gateway" indicates that the modems fail randomly.  Usually only one will be failed, but up to two will fail the Network Service Detection simultaneously.
Knology insists that there is nothing wrong with their modems.  I have removed a modem from the rv016 when Network Service Detection indicates it is in a failed state and connected it directly to a computer.  It will work, but it has a different IP address and default gateway.  As soon as I connect it back to the rv016, it works there too, but on the original IP address and gateway.  I've only tried this test this twice so far, so it is a bit inconclusive.
Speed tests behind the rv016 are the same as directly connected to one of the cable modems.  The router works normally as it has for years.  Nothing else is acting funny.
So my question is, is the rv016 failing or is the ISP having problems?
