Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Stop Responding To DNS Requests
Apr 4, 2012
We have a 25Mbit connection comming in through a cable in the basement, going through a modem that is connected to a RVS4000 small buisness router on the first floor, that acts as the single NAT. Connected to that in parallel we have 4 wireless b/g or b/g/n routers of various cisco/linksys models, one for each floor, each with DHCP disabled.Over the last few months there have been some issues with the router and I'm curious if there is anything that can be done to solve them. The firmware of the router is the latest at the time of this writing, V2.0.2.7
1. The router will occasionally lock up and completely stop responding to DNS requests. Attempting to open a website will result in browsers giving their standard 'DNS Lookup Failure' messages. The router will also become completely non-responsive when trying to access it via its IP address (standard 192.168.1.1). No username/password dialog appears. However oddly enough IRC and other chats like skype will still work fine.Restoring Factory settings has not worked. This issue has gotten to the point where this happens about once a day. Restarting the router will fix the issue. While I think the issue may sometimes resolve itself, it could also just be one of the other people in the house restarting it manually.I'm assuming that the router is to blame here and not the cable modem in the basement or the DNS server of our ISP, mostly due to the fact that the router becomes unresponsive and won't let me log in as admin when this happens. also restarting the router, not the modem, seems to fix the issue.
2. The router's log is always empty Specifically I have enabled 'Output' and 'Local Log' as you can see here:
3. Issues with some people hogging bandwidth With 25 people and a 25Mbit connection each person in the house should effectively get about 125KB/s of download speed, especially since not everyone is always using bandwidth. However it can happen where one person is, often without knowing it, hogging a large chunk of bandwidth and slowing the network down for everyone, such as downloading multiple large files from different sites, streaming high-quality video, etc.I would like to know if any of the following might be possible to do with this router: See the bandwidth usage per individual MAC or IP address on the network over timeLimit the amount of bandwidth a specific MAC or IP address can use. Make the distribution of bandwidth more fair when a few people are using far more of it than other people.
I have at times resorted to limiting P2P via IPS in the past, and of-course that does work somewhat, but that's not ideal. I'd much rather just know who is doing it, and specifically by how much they are slowing other people down. While the IPS page will list the IP addresses of those trying to use P2P when it's disabled, there is no way for me to really quantify how much bandwidth they'd be using otherwise, and this doesn't at all include things straight-up HTTP downloads. In any case, this router should easily be able to handle ~25 simultaneous connections, right? Are there any settings that I should make sure to enable or set to distribute bandwidth more fairly, given the setup we have?
4. The IPS report chart is not readable. This is a bit of a nit-pick, but the IPS report chart is basically not readable because the colors used in the key are identical in color. Can you tell the difference between the colors of 'Network Traffic' and 'Attack Counts' in the key at the top? They could have used any two colors that are at least somewhat distinguishable, even light grey and dark grey would have been better, not magenta and another magenta.

Roughly once an hour my games will simply just stop responding, most notably on League of Legends everything else continues to happen around me uninterrupted but I cannot move my character nor can I use any abilities for about ~4 seconds and will do the same for literally every online game I have played. It doesn't seem to cut out my internet but when it happens on occasion it will crash a Skype call for about the same duration the unresponsiveness occurs.I have Optimum Online and a Linksys wired router with Windows 7.

I have my firewall on IP 192.168.0.1 (for example, real IP is a class C address). I have a web server (Ubuntu 10.04, though this happened before with an 8.04 box as well) on ip 192.168.0.101. Everything will be functioning fine, and I won't have any issues for a while. Then, randomly I'll have problems getting to my web server, getting disconnected from SSH sessions. I go to one of my linux boxes and do an "arping -b 192.168.0.101" and I will get two responses, one from my firewall and one from the box, as illustrated below. The only way to correct the issue that I've run into is to reload the firewall, which will then behave properly again until it randomly decides to start answering ARP requests on the other IP again.

Yesterday I was on my cousin's computer, and we had to remove the ethernet cord to connect it to mine as my wireless adapter wasn't cooperating with his internet. This was all fine and dandy until we had to plug the ethernet cord back into his computer. It locks everything up. If you try to open a program, it won't open. If a program is already open when the cord is plugged in, it stops responding within 15 seconds.I called my brother, and he suggested I run a virus scan via Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, which I did. MalwareBytes found 5 problems, MSE found 1 additional one. They have all been removed, however this problem still persists. If you try to start the computer with the ethernet cord plugged in, it will allow him to put in his password, it will say welcome for about 3-5 minutes, then the screen will go black. The mouse is visible, doing it's motion to indicate that it's loading something, but it never achieves anything.

On the fios connection I have an RV042 VPN router and on the Cable company connection I have an rvs4000 router, I would like to know if there is a way I can connect the 2 so I can share a printer I have on one of the 2 networks from the other network without using the VPN feature, like via an ethernet cable connected between the 2 and some kind of static route maybe?

Ive set up a rvs4000 with two vlans, one as a bussiness network and the other as a guest network. Everything works fine and the networks can not see each other. I would like to add wifi and I would like to do so with keeping both networks separate. I have a used 1130AG access point and was wondering if I could use this single AP for both networks. If so, how would I go about doing so? Is there a better suited AP for my needs?

I have an RVS4000 running V2.0.2.7 firmware that gives me an "Invalid Character(s) Found" error message when I try to edit an existing ACL.
I'm trying to deploy 57 of these routers and would like to be able to use a pre-built config dropped onto each router.
I initially planned on editing the exported config with a find&replace for my local LAN addresses. Since that didn't work the next reasonable solution would be to edit the ACL list (much more tedious, but still better than hand-entering every ACL on all 57 devices).
when this bug will be addressed? Alternatively, if there is an offline configuration editing tool I would be one happy camper to have it!

I don't know if my vendor mislead me, but I need to do this: There is a public subnet in my office, not a 192.168.x.x, but a real Public IP.The reason is that we do VOIP and those are only servers. I installed a RVS 4000 in that location, and assigned a PUBLIC Ip to BOTH the WAN and LAN, since when I connect from outside, using either QickVPN or another identical router, I need to be assigned one of the PUBLIC Ip's on the remote LAN. That is the whole idea of the project, to locate servers remotely and make them use our set of PUBLIC IP's. Well, so far I cannot connect either with the Quick VPN client, or using the VPN Wizard. It goes and creates the tunnel, without error, but when I click test, it fails.

We have backup and other traffic over our vpn which is affecting our ip phone service between two sites. Our consultant suggested implementing QOS over the VPN to give the phone traffic priority. Is this possible with the rvs4000. Is there any good source saying how to do it. Is the setup of the QOS on this router similar to another router where this has been discussed.

I am getting ready to setup an RVS4000 so we can use the VPN functionality of it, but I am not quite sure of the correct way to integrate it into our network though. I do not need site to site, just the client portion of it for a few salesmen/off site people to use. I have never used or setup a VPN before, so I'm learning everything as I go along.
We are in the middle of switching our ISP and I am waiting to set this up until the new service is live so I can test it prior to moving the rest of the company to the new ISP.
We are switching to Comcast, and will have 5 static IP's available to use. Currently, the firewall does all our NAT and is the forward facing device on our network. I would like to leave the firewall in place (although I am setting up a new firewall for the new internet connection) and have th RVS 4000 sit behind it and receive VPN traffic from a WAN to LAN rule We currently have a 192.168.100.0/24 network.
Do I need to setup another /24 network for the VPN to function behind (and still have access to the 100.X network), or is there a way to allow everyone who connects to receive a 100.X ip address from our DHCP server. I'm not sure how to set everything up with the WAN/LAN connections on the RVS4000 to acheive this.
We are running a domain on a 2008R2 server. The clients will be using laptops that are already part of the domain, if that will make a difference.

I'm trying to setup a VPN tunnel between a Cisco RVS4000 on our side and a Cisco ASA5520, to connect a machine on our local network to a test server on the target side.
We have all the settings setup correctly and the tunnel is up and running, however, our local machine can't connect/ping to their server. I've tried a trace route both from the machine and from the RVS4000 itself, and they both get stuck after getting past 192.168.1.1. Is there any routing or NAT-ing that I need to do on our router? Or is there a problem somewhere else?

I'm having an issue with a Linksys RVS4000 which doesn't appear to be behaving as I think it should.I need to forward a port (Single Port Forwarding) through to an internal NAT host. However, I only want that host/port to be accessible from one host on the internet, for security reasons.
I have created the port forwarding entry and this works fine. I then created two rules in IP Based ACL - one to block all access to that port from the WAN interface and one to allow access from a single host.
However, it appears that when a port forwarding entry is added, it will completely bypass the ACL and allow all traffic for that port/host by default. Is this the correct behaviour?
Firmware version is v1.2.11

I'm currently dealing with a weird problem on a Cisco RVS4000. I'm trying to connect to a IPSEC VPN Gateway (NETASQ) located on the LAN side of the RVS4000. I'm using Green bow vpn client on the WAN side of the RVS4000. Basically I'm trying to get through the RVS.My VPN config is OK because i tested it on the LAN side of the RVS.
The RVS is configured like this: NO VPN configured.
Block WAN Request :OFF
FIREWALL,IPS,DDOS are OFF
NAT forwarding on for UDP 500 and 4500 directed from the wan to the ip of the VPN gateway. Seems right because iv managed to do this with other routers (different brands) on another site.I've wire sharked my vpn client and i keep getting ICMP destination unreachable (PORT UNREACHABLE) after my ISAKMP launching packet. Can the RVS nat these ports ?

The moment I disable the IPS functoin, the connection hangs and does not connect to a server. Reason I'd like to keep IPS disabled it is because it's eating up half of bandwith when enabled.RVS4000

I got an internet from provider (which is LAN cable sticking from the wall) - and it works fine when I connect via LAN cable - when I write the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS servers on the LAN adapter and create a PPPoE connection with username and password. I want to do the same but wirelessly. I have an ASUS RT-N10 LX wi-fi router - and connected the cable from the provider to the WAN slot on the router. Then I have accessed the router from my laptop [URL] - and configured everything as it was on my laptop.
IP Adddress: 192.168.17.191
Submask: 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.16.1
DNS1: 192.168.1.250
DNS1: 192.168.1.10
Wireless network works fine, the default gateway is pinging - but DNS servers are not accessible. As a result no internet connection available ( Moreover - when I want to ping the DNS (ping 192.168.1.250) - I tries to get a response from other location 192.168.1.3
