Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1242 - MAC-flap Notifications
Feb 8, 2010
I am having an issue at one of our remote agencies whereas we are getting numerous mac-flap notifications on our switches. This has become kind of a hinderance as we are getting tired of seeing these messages. The end users havent been complaining.
It's usually occurring with the same mac-addresses over and over. Upon further investigation, we found the mac-addresses are all on laptops which have both wireless and wired nic's. There are wireless AP's (cisco 1242's) in use which they can connect. We also found where the error is popping up as they move from wireless into docking into their docking station which has a lan cable attached. I was under the assumption that the wireless mac and wired mac were different numbers and therefore if the wired was up simultaneously with the wired, as it switched over, they shouldn't get a flap.

I currently have a stack of 3750G switches with a cross stack etherchannel connected to a 3750E stack in the distribution layer. The 3750G stack is running 15.0-2SE IP Base. I began noticing the Mac flap issue when I was Re-enabling dot1x on the switchports. As first I thought dot1x maybe have contributed to this so I removed it from the stack temporarily.I am still seeing Mac flap logs usually when a machine reboots or re-connects back to the network. These are all wired desktops.I started looking at the etherchannel configuration which is using LACP. The 3750E stack looks fine with all ports in mode active. On the problematic 3750G stack I noticed 3 of the ports in the etherchannel set to mode active and 1 port set to mode passive. The port shows as bundled but I can't imagine this is ok.The only other difference on this one port is there is no mls qos commands like on the other 3 interfaces in the port channel.I mainly need to know what the Mac flapping is about. Whether it is a bug or related to the current etherchannel configuration.

We are using CISCO LMS 4.2.3 in our network in India, we are facing a issue regarding alarm generation for a protocol flap/down, especially when BGP / OSPF neighbourship got flapped. These flapping will result in the data service degradation , by which we came to know that some protocol flap may occurred at router end & then we go for the manual check by login into the router.after escalating the same to cisco we came to know that it is a bug of Cisco LMS. using any other method/technique to view the protocol down alarms automatically for cisco routers.

We have a couple of IBM blade chassis with Nexus 4000I 10G blade switch in it. Four 10G ports from each Nexus 4000I switch are bundled into a port channel and connected to Nexus 7K. On the 4k end, one port in the port channel is doing down and coming up as an idividual port. After few minutes it is going down again and coming up as a port-channel member port. It is happening quite offen. [code]

Here is an example of what each switch logs when a server drops offline. Sample logs taken between 5:32am and 5:35am on Feb 20. This particular one was having problems all weekend. Switch #1 encountered over 2000 interface resets. The corresponding VPC port on Switch #2 only had 13 resets.

We're running LMS 3.2 with DFM 3.2, and at some point within the last month, email notifications from DFM have stopped flowing. DFM is trapping events as they occur and these are viewable through the portal, but notifications that should be going out as email and SMS messages have stopped.
[code]...
Backups going back beyond when this is believed to have stopped working are available if something needs to be restored. If that's the direction I need to go, how do I restore just the DFM portion of the database? If backup restore is not the way to proceed, what other advice can be provided.

I have been trying to setup my DIR-655 A4 (Firmware 1.34NA) router to send me email notifications on new firmwares, when the log is full and every Saturday. So I have a schedule already created for sending the emails on Saturday and I also have the option to send notification of new firmware checked. Now I have settings, similar to the following, under email settings.

DIR-655(A3) 1.33NAb02_HNAP_beta I used to be able to send notifications on log full etc... When my ISP was still allowing outbound email w/opt out of block on port 25. This worked on my old DI-524, and used to work on my DIR-655.In an effort to clamp down on spam my ISP formerly SBC now AT&T began requiring SSL. Secure Authentication is not required. With the ever increasing concern for controlling spam DLink really needs to get in gear and provide the support customers need and back the efforts of ISP's to control spam. Otherwise it's wasted code occupying space. On that note if space is a concern, need space for the code ~ throw SecureSpot out !
[URL]
On the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings window click Edit and verify:
# Server Name - displays smtp.att.yahoo.com.
# Port - displays 465.
Note: When updating the secure server settings, check SSL checkbox first to update the port setting.
* Under Outgoing mail (SMTP), the box next to server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked. This works flawlessly with Thunderbird and other mail clients therefore it is clearly a shortcoming of the firmware on the DIR-655 i.e. no SSL? This is totally inadequate.

Is there a way to get notifications (emails) when the external ip changes and the rotuer updates dyndns?i need to get an email about this change of ip. The only constraint is it has to work without a computer attached to the router as it would have to be powered on 24/7 So ip change notifiers like trueip or ipcheck won't work as they are programs that run in a computer.

We're currently evaluating Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.Something we've been trying to achieve for the past couple of days is to have LMS notify us when a Microsoft Host is Unreachable, and then to notify us once that alarm has cleared (the Microsoft Host is Reachable again).
We're at the point where the Microsoft Host was discovered, LMS incorrectly identified it as a Cisco Call Manager, so we changed it's identity to non-cisco device > microsoft host > microsoft host. LMS currently has the device listed as being in the 'Questioned' state. SNMP timeout has been set to 15 seconds, and the SNMP community is correct.
Being new to LMS Prime, and having not received any training on the product to this point, we turned to the admin guide, but we couldn't find anything that goes into detail for how to manage the notification for non-Cisco devices.
Is what we're trying to achieve possible with Cisco Prime LMS 4.2? We just want to be able to receive simple 'host unreachable' notifications for Microsoft servers, and the corresponding 'cleared' notifications once the server is back online.

I'm using two cisco 1242 AG access points to configure WDS feature. I've named the accesspoints as AP1(acts as WDS) and AP2. Since I've only two accesspoints, I've configured the AP1 to act both as a WDS and as a regular accesspoints.Further I'm using the local radius server within the AP1 to authenticate both clients and infrastructure accesspoints. And both APs are connected to a router (which act as a dhcp server) via a unmanageble switch and both accesspoints are getting registered with WDS.But the issue is when I tried to connect to the configured SSID, it promts me a "authentication window" but after entering the configured username and password, i'm not getting authenticated by the AP.
I've attached the configurations of both APs to for your reference and I've used the following cisco document as a guideline to crate the WDS. [code]

Setting up SNMP on my Cisco AP's (1242AG Lightweight). How do I manage these via SNMP? It doesn't appear there is any settings within each AP for SNMP but only on the 4400 controller. What I am trying to do is setup Solarwinds Alerts, so when an AP goes down, I get notified of it. How or where this gets setup on the 4400 or the AP. I'm guessing there is something probably on the 4400 that I setup.

I'm having a little issue with some Cisco Aironet1242ag WAP's. I receive a call at least twice a month stating that some of the WAP's are not giving out internet connection. What I always do is go to my patch panel and disconnect those WAP's not working and connect them back again so they can power cycle. These WAP's are connected to a Cisco3750g. Once the WAP's boot up, the users can connect to the WAP and connect to the internet.
I don't know if these WAP's are filling up with some information that causes the access points to not connect to the WAN.

I have some 1242s and I can't get a straight answer on whether they can do both autonomous and lightweight or just lightweight.
Model number: AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9.
I'm assuming that the 'L' in the model numbers means it's just lightweight, but searching Cisco's site and the Internet in general it's just not clear.
I know it works as a lightweight AP, can I run it in autonomous mode?

Is it possible to make a bridge using a 1242 and a 1310? I have been able to get them to associate together and it appears it will function as a bridge. I have the 12(4) 253 JA IOS for both devices. I would like to use the g antenna on the 1242 for the bridge and the a antenna for wireless clients. I have 3 Cisco 1242 WAPs that I have deployed at a site that has NO RADIUS/AAA devices. I have given all of them a different channel (1,6,11), but the same SSID and crypto (WPA2-PSK). The issue is when a machine boots up it associates with the closest/strongest AP, but as the device "roams" it does not which to a different AP. It stays associated with the original AP until that signal is gone. Then it quickly associates with the closest AP with no problem.
How do I get the device to associate with the strongest WAP? I have research "fast roaming and WDS" but it seems like you need EAP/LEAP and they do NOT have that at all.
