Cisco Wireless :: 1242 Standalone AP Restart Itself?
Jun 6, 2012
One of Cisco Wireless AP 1242 installed in my premises restarts itself; AP is getting power from Catalyst 2960 POE. I am using multiple SSID on this AP. I have issued the show tech-support. I have seen below in tech-support System was restarted by unknown reload cause - reason ptr 0xF, PC 0x46FEB8, address 0x0? what could be the reason of restarting of AP. AP is in production since 1 year and it restarts seldom.

I'm looking at creating WLANs using standalone APs for the first time. I know this can all be done with trivially a controller, but this project can't stretch to that...Can I use MAC filtering on standalone APs to restrict which clients associate?I think these will be 1240AG devices but I assume the answer is the same for all models? Can I mix MAC filtering with WEP/WPA? And use MAC filtering without encryption?

I have a Brand new AP that was bought for a site which has a controller, however it was never installed. I was wondering can you downgrade this AP to make it work in stand alone mode as a normal AP?

I have an extra 521G standalone access point. My network jack is on the other side of the wall...so I am curious to see if I could use this access point as a bridge of some sorts to join my wireless network (on a UC520W-8U-4FXO-K9) and use the Ethernet jack on the AP as a bridge of some sorts so that I can connect my IP phone and laptop behind it. I've set up standalone AP's like this as base stations before, but I've never tried bridging and haven't had much luck just playing around with it.

I just installed an Aironet 1140 to replace a Netgear ProSafe access point that I had in my network prior. I'm having one issue that I can't figure out though. None of the client PCs can establish a connection to an external (over the internet) VPN server while on the Aironet wireless. If i unplug the AP and plug a PC into the same port that normall feeds the Aironet I can VPN just fine.
Is there any "VPN Passthrough" option that needs to be enabled somewhere on the 1140 that is blocking this traffic for some reason?
i'm running the following IOS BOOTLDR: C1140 Boot Loader (C1140-BOOT-M) Version 12.4(18a)JA3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) and I've included my running config below

I have a AIR-SAP-1602i-k9 Aironet. I cannot find any information on the Cisco site on how to configure the Aironet without a controller. I assumed a standalone meant I could just login.
I tried seeing if it would pull a DHCP address on my network but it didnt.

I have never worked on wireless in a standalone mode, so this is the first time i will be doing it.

For some time now I have been looking for a good business class wireless AP. I've narrowed it down to the Cisco Aironet 1140 standalone (no controller). I'm no stranger to Cisco products. I've worked with their routers, switches and Pix/ASA firewalls. However, I've not had the opportunity to work with their wireless AP's. Anyone using these AP's (more specifically the 1140 standalone), can provide information on the reliability and security of these devices. Some of the features I would like to have like Radio Mgmt. and Rogue AP Detection I see are only available on the controller based units. Does not having these features on the standalone unit reduce its reliability and security? This is for a small business and the budget does not allow to drop for a controller at this time.

I'm about to purchase 2 Aironet APs, either 1140 or 1160 Series for a small Business. I know too little about the AP installation. How to let both APs works in Roaming Mode so that users can move freely within the site without having to drop and connect from one AP to the other.

for some reason our wlan-controllers were build up to be standalone instead of beeing one mobility-group. I would like to change this in order to use all features of HA.
let me describe our scenario: two WLCs 5508 running SW ver. 6
- same subnet
- both are running in master controller mode
- different hostnames, ip-addresses, etc
- all settings for WLANs and AP-groups (exept the APs themselves in these groups) are the same
- in total at this moment we are running around 100 LAPs configured one half on WLC#1, the other half on WLC#2
I don't know exactly why, but when that setting was installed, someone already configuredHA for each accesspoint... e.g.:
- AP#1 primary WLC#1, secondary WLC#2
- AP#2 primary WLC#2, secondary WLC#1 but without WLC#2 knowing the configuration for AP#1 it makes no sense, correct?
so my question is: how should I do the migration in the best way?
is it easy as:
- disabling master controller mode on WLC#2
- configuring both WLCs into one mobility group
--> WLCs are negotiating their configurations for the APs

I'm new to the Cisco Aironet Access Point. I got a new STANDALONE Aironet 1260 series access point device. The part # AIR-AP1262N-A-K9. The shipping package did not come with any guide, CD, and power adapter. I searched the Cisco sites, but could not find appropriate manuals. I did find a getting started guide but not for standalone AP, it's for Controller-based AP. Question - where can I find manuals / guides to set up and configure my new standalone Cisco Aironet Access Point 1260?

I just installed an Aironet 1602i, standalone WAP. I have it configured to use a RADIUS server in our office. However, two issues have come up when trying to get clients connected.
iPhones and iPads won't connect to either the 2.4 or the 5 GHz radios.
No one can connect to the 5 Ghz radio.
Both radios are UP according to the GUI interfaces of the WAP. Also, laptops and android devices are able to connect to the 2.4GHz radio but not the 5 GHz radio.
I am on the latest version of the firmware.

I have a number of existing 1140G Access points.I now need to purchase a couple of new AP's to expand coverage and it makes sense to go with the latest N standard ones.Currently I only have standalone models and at the moment I don't have the budget to purchase a management box to allow me to get centrally managed models.
If I purchase 1140N standalone AP's now, can I convert the to centrally managed ones later? If yes, Any disadvantage in doing this?

We have just installed our first CT2504.After install I have found a dramatic drop in signal strength compared to the wireless survey result obtained. All of our site surveys include real world testing using an AP, in this case a AP1041N.In doubt I retested a section using an AP1041N in the same location as one of the recently deployed LAP1041N.
In the same location a LAP1041N has between -10 and -20dbi difference in SNR compared to the test AP1041N.For example locations that tested with -60dbi using an AP1041N have little to no coverage using the LAP1041N installed. This applies irrespective of the WLC automatic control over Tx power or manually setting the LAP TX to the highest level.

how to configure an AIR-LAP521-G-E-K9 wireless access point in standalone mode? I've tried connecting it to a standard 1GB switch, feed it with IP address via DHCP it responds to PING but when it comes to detect it in CCA (3.1) it says unable to connect without even asking for username and/or password. Trying to connect to it through HTTP or HTTPS doesn't work either.

I must configure an Aironet 2602e Access Point, as a standalone access point (without WLC), but I can not find Configuration Guides for that. I have only found the "getting started guide" but there is described an installation combined with a WLC, which I have not. Is it provided no real guidance from Cisco? I did something never done before.

I'm using two cisco 1242 AG access points to configure WDS feature. I've named the accesspoints as AP1(acts as WDS) and AP2. Since I've only two accesspoints, I've configured the AP1 to act both as a WDS and as a regular accesspoints.Further I'm using the local radius server within the AP1 to authenticate both clients and infrastructure accesspoints. And both APs are connected to a router (which act as a dhcp server) via a unmanageble switch and both accesspoints are getting registered with WDS.But the issue is when I tried to connect to the configured SSID, it promts me a "authentication window" but after entering the configured username and password, i'm not getting authenticated by the AP.
I've attached the configurations of both APs to for your reference and I've used the following cisco document as a guideline to crate the WDS. [code]

I'm having a little issue with some Cisco Aironet1242ag WAP's. I receive a call at least twice a month stating that some of the WAP's are not giving out internet connection. What I always do is go to my patch panel and disconnect those WAP's not working and connect them back again so they can power cycle. These WAP's are connected to a Cisco3750g. Once the WAP's boot up, the users can connect to the WAP and connect to the internet.
I don't know if these WAP's are filling up with some information that causes the access points to not connect to the WAN.

I recently bought 6 airo net 1041N standalone access points for a customer of mine. It's an academy of barely 200 students. I'll be installing an access point in every room, to ensure better signal, since they use video for there classes. The reason why i decided to install an access point in every room is because the walls are armed concrete and they had a terrible experience with a past company in which they spend a lot of money for a antenna system that didn't work. These access points will be connected to a switch, which I have to buy also.Every student is going to bring there own laptops in order to connect to the network.
The reason why I'm writing is because I have a few questions to clarify.
1) What is the best position for better signal, top side wall or corner ceiling?
2) How many client mac address filtering can i do per access point?
3)I plan on doing ESSID but can I mac filter clients to a particular access point or should I mac address filter all permitted devices in all access points. The problem is that students come with iPods and phones and as you know on windows they will be able to see the wpa2 key and enter it on the particular UN-authorized device.
4) Any graphic user interface for configuring these access points or do i have to use Cisco IOS(kind of familiar with it)? (I'm used to GUI)
5)How can I configure these access points, through Ethernet browser or do I have to use console port cable?
6)Do I have to use POE injector or can I connect the access points directly to the switch with PoE and QoS?
7)I was planning on buying a small business switch sg100 d-8 but they recommended me that I should use the catalyst 2960 series, which would be best for handling video data? don't have to be much features, just QoS.
8) Can CCp software be used in these access points?

Is it possible to make a bridge using a 1242 and a 1310? I have been able to get them to associate together and it appears it will function as a bridge. I have the 12(4) 253 JA IOS for both devices. I would like to use the g antenna on the 1242 for the bridge and the a antenna for wireless clients. The configuration on the web management appears to support bridge root and non root for both devices.

I have 3 Cisco 1242 WAPs that I have deployed at a site that has NO RADIUS/AAA devices. I have given all of them a different channel (1,6,11), but the same SSID and crypto (WPA2-PSK). The issue is when a machine boots up it associates with the closest/strongest AP, but as the device "roams" it does not which to a different AP. It stays associated with the original AP until that signal is gone. Then it quickly associates with the closest AP with no problem.
How do I get the device to associate with the strongest WAP? I have research "fast roaming and WDS" but it seems like you need EAP/LEAP and they do NOT have that at all.
