Cisco Wireless :: 1140 Series AP - Centrally Managed Versus Standalone

Jun 13, 2012

I have a number of existing 1140G Access points.I now need to purchase a couple of new AP's to expand coverage and it makes sense to go with the latest N standard ones.Currently I only have standalone models and at the moment I don't have the budget to purchase a management box to allow me to get centrally managed models.

If I purchase 1140N standalone AP's now, can I convert the to centrally managed ones later? If yes, Any disadvantage in doing this?

Finding A Centrally Managed Wireless Hotspot System?

Oct 9, 2012

I am looking for a centrally managed wireless hotspot system. But the system has a few requirements. I have been looking around but so far I have not found a system that ticks all the boxes?

-The system (AP's) needs to be centrally managed (except for the internet connections, each site will use its own outgoing connection to the internet).

-The system needs to have some kind of ticket system for guest access (hotspot).

-It also needs to be able to identify employees so they can pass through without needing a ticket, everywhere they go.

Cisco :: Standalone Aironet 1140 - VPN Not Working Over Wireless

Dec 19, 2010

I just installed an Aironet 1140 to replace a Netgear ProSafe access point that I had in my network prior.  I'm having one issue that I can't figure out though.  None of the client PCs can establish a connection to an external (over the internet) VPN server while on the Aironet wireless.  If i unplug the AP and plug a PC into the same port that normall feeds the Aironet I can VPN just fine.

Is there any "VPN Passthrough" option that needs to be enabled somewhere on the 1140 that is blocking this traffic for some reason?

i'm running the following IOS BOOTLDR: C1140 Boot Loader (C1140-BOOT-M) Version 12.4(18a)JA3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) and I've included my running config below

Cisco Wireless :: Aironet 1140 Standalone AP To Have Radio Management

Dec 28, 2011

For some time now I have been looking for a good business class wireless AP. I've narrowed it down to the Cisco Aironet 1140 standalone (no controller). I'm no stranger to Cisco products. I've worked with their routers, switches and Pix/ASA firewalls. However, I've not had the opportunity to work with their wireless AP's. Anyone using these AP's (more specifically the 1140 standalone), can provide information on the reliability and security of these devices. Some of the features I would like to have like Radio Mgmt. and Rogue AP Detection I see are only available on the controller based units. Does not having these features on the standalone unit reduce its reliability and security? This is for a small business and the budget does not allow to drop for a controller at this time.

Cisco Wireless :: CT2504 / Bad LWAP Versus Good Standalone AP Coverage?

Jun 13, 2012

We have just installed our first CT2504.After install I have found a dramatic drop in signal strength compared to the wireless survey result obtained. All of our site surveys include real world testing using an AP, in this case a AP1041N.In doubt I retested a section using an AP1041N in the same location as one of the recently deployed LAP1041N.

In the same location a LAP1041N has between -10 and -20dbi difference in SNR compared to the test AP1041N.For example locations that tested with -60dbi using an AP1041N have little to no coverage using the LAP1041N installed. This applies irrespective of the WLC automatic control over Tx power or manually setting the LAP TX to the highest level.

Cisco :: Airplay Support Aironet AP 1140 Standalone

Oct 12, 2012

We have been successfully using our Aironet 1140 AP in standalone mode with mainly Windows pcs & laptop users, and now, iPads and iPhones. All seem to connect happily through the 1140.

Recently we have a requirent to be able to use Apple's Airplay. Basically, it is not working through the 1140, it works ok via wired ethernet. Can the 1140 support Airplay? - If yes, what precisely must be enabled/configured?

We have a single Class C network without any Vlans. I understand multicast must be enabled, I can't see where to enable this. How to get this working if it is at all possible.

Cisco Wireless :: How To Setup A Standalone Aironet AP 1260 Series

Sep 13, 2011

I'm new to the Cisco Aironet Access Point. I got a new STANDALONE Aironet 1260 series access point device. The part # AIR-AP1262N-A-K9. The shipping package did not come with any guide, CD, and power adapter. I searched the Cisco sites, but could not find appropriate manuals. I did find a getting started guide but not for standalone AP, it's for Controller-based AP. Question - where can I find manuals / guides to set up and configure my new standalone Cisco Aironet Access Point 1260?

Cisco Wireless :: Aironet 1140 Series Units Won't Connect To Gigabit Switch

Mar 27, 2013

I just installed 2 new units and neither will connect to a new HP gigabit switch - no link light, other devices can connect to the switch OK.  Their gigabit ethernet settings are set to auto for duplex and speed.  I also tried forcing one of them to full duplex and 1000 Mbps which didn't work either.  They're both powered by POE injectors.  If I connect them to a 10/100 switch they work fine.

Cisco 1500 Series AP - Outdoor Wi-Fi Mesh Topology Versus Repeaters

Apr 3, 2012

Here's the current configuration in our organization (which I believe is incorrect):We have a number of Cisco 1500 series AP's (22 in total), that are mounted outdoors to provide seamless WiFi coverage over a large area. Each AP however has its own physical ethernet connection back to the WLC (All the AP's are marked as Root AP's). They are all broadcasting the same SSID. We have tried to stagger the channel selection but because there are only three non-overlapping channels to choose from, and in some areas the density of AP's is quite high, there is multiple places of channel interference. With this configuration we experience 100-150 disconnects from clients every day. (Our clients are mobile so they move throughout the coverage area constantly).

My idea is to switch the AP's to the same channel thereby forming a wireless mesh, use the built in functionality of the 1500 series to use 802.11a as the backhaul, designate one or two AP's as root AP's and wire them back to the WLC. Thereby forming a WiFi mesh, which if I'm not mistaken is the point of the 1500 series in the first place!

I am however completely new at WiFi networks and wondering if I am simply mistaken in what I believe my proposed changes will enable, or if there is a better way to tackle the WiFi topology.

Cisco :: Test Fast Roaming Using A Cisco 2100 Series Controller And 2 1140 APs?

I'm trying to test fast roaming using a Cisco 2100 Series controller and 2 1140 APs. The initial authentication succeeds fine and the wireless connection works ok using WPA2+CCKM and LEAP with a Cisco ACS radius server. The problem is that the client does not attempt to preauthenticate with the other AP because the RSN Capabilities IE in the AP beacons and probe responses do not set the RSN Preauthentication capable bit. I can't figure out what it takes to get the APs to indicate to clients that it can do preauthentication. I'm been crawling through all the documentation I can find, to no avail.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 Centrally Switched Client Errors

Aug 16, 2012

I am having trouble with a newly configured install.  Basically it seems that my centrally switched guest SSID is not functioning.  As you change AP groups, which should change the interface associated with the SSID and also the dhcp client address, the client is retaining the original dhcp address from whichever AP group they first associated with.

I also have a locally switch WPA2 SSID at each location which is working fine.  Clients are able to change dhcp address correctly as they move between AP groups.  It just doesn't seem to be working on the guest network, which is odd because it was working earlier in the install.  It has only started having issues yesterday afternoon.

The interface above is assigned to the guest SSID in one of the AP group.  I assume this has something to do with it but I've been over my DHCP assignments on the core switch, local switch, controller, and dhcp server and can find no issue with the configuration..

I am not sure why as I am not using DOT1X at all.  The guest is a pass-thru and the WPA2 network is just WPA + WPA2 with TKIP and AES.  No DOT1X anywhere on the controller...

Cisco :: 2950 / 2960 / 3560 / 3750 / 2125 / 1262 - Centrally Manage All Switches

Aug 27, 2012

I have more than 20 Cisco switches in my office which is basically a soap manufacturing factory. The switches include Cisco 2950, 2960, 3560, 3750 etc. We have routers also which include 2821, 2951 etc. We also have Cisco WLC 2125 and LAP 1262 series. Sometimes all these devices management comes very tough to us.

We need to log on to different devices for troubleshooting/network management which sometimes becomes very tough to us. So I wonder if there any Cisco applications or tools by which we can centrally manage all these devices.

Cisco Wireless :: Migrating 2 Standalone 5508 To One Mobility-group

Jan 23, 2012

for some reason our wlan-controllers were build up to be standalone instead of beeing one mobility-group. I would like to change this in order to use all features of HA.

let me describe our scenario: two WLCs 5508 running SW ver. 6

- same subnet

- both are running in master controller mode

- different hostnames, ip-addresses, etc

- all settings for WLANs and AP-groups (exept the APs themselves in these groups) are the same

- in total at this moment we are running around 100 LAPs configured one half on WLC#1, the other half on WLC#2

I don't know exactly why, but when that setting was installed, someone already configuredHA for each accesspoint... e.g.:

- AP#1 primary WLC#1, secondary WLC#2

- AP#2 primary WLC#2, secondary WLC#1 but without WLC#2 knowing the configuration for AP#1 it makes no sense, correct?

so my question is: how should I do the migration in the best way?
is it easy as:

- disabling master controller mode on WLC#2

- configuring both WLCs into one mobility group

--> WLCs are negotiating their configurations for the APs
