Cisco 1500 Series AP - Outdoor Wi-Fi Mesh Topology Versus Repeaters
Apr 3, 2012
Here's the current configuration in our organization (which I believe is incorrect):We have a number of Cisco 1500 series AP's (22 in total), that are mounted outdoors to provide seamless WiFi coverage over a large area. Each AP however has its own physical ethernet connection back to the WLC (All the AP's are marked as Root AP's). They are all broadcasting the same SSID. We have tried to stagger the channel selection but because there are only three non-overlapping channels to choose from, and in some areas the density of AP's is quite high, there is multiple places of channel interference. With this configuration we experience 100-150 disconnects from clients every day. (Our clients are mobile so they move throughout the coverage area constantly).
My idea is to switch the AP's to the same channel thereby forming a wireless mesh, use the built in functionality of the 1500 series to use 802.11a as the backhaul, designate one or two AP's as root AP's and wire them back to the WLC. Thereby forming a WiFi mesh, which if I'm not mistaken is the point of the 1500 series in the first place!
I am however completely new at WiFi networks and wondering if I am simply mistaken in what I believe my proposed changes will enable, or if there is a better way to tackle the WiFi topology.

We are looking to deploy an indoor mesh deployment in an area where radar might be an issue.know that when using 1500 series APs you cannot choose UNII-1 channels even if they are deployed indoors. My question is if you can use a UNII-1 backhaul with indoor APs (3600 series for example) in an indoor mesh deployment.

I want to start implementing a small outdoor mesh network of 3 APs Aironet 1550 in order to grow afterward with more APs. Is there any way to configure those 3 APs in an outdoor mesh configuration (for example, only one RAP and two MAPs) without a Wireless LAN Controller or I have to have at least, one WLC? My idea is to have a WLC 5508, but at the very beginning I don't know if my budget is gonna allow me to cost the WLC.

Is Cisco WCS mandatory when deploying an outdoor enterprise mesh solution? If I am goin to use the 1552E purely as an outdoor access point ,do I really need the Cisco WCS?

which controller I should use with 11 1552E AP ? I know 5508 will work with the AP's, but would the 2504 also work? If 2504 will work, I will go for the 2504 since its a cheaper solution.

Release 6 controller 9 Mesh APs. 1524 (2x 5G radios, 1x 2.4G) and 1522 (1x 5G radios, 1x 2.4G) Designed for 3 linear hops and then a split to the rest.
AP1 = Root AP
linear to
AP2
Linear to
AP3
Linear to
AP4
equidistant to
AP5 and AP6
The rest are further away from AP4, but have visibility back to AP 4 The issue is after an event (say a power outage) at AP4.AP5 uses AP3 as it's parent. That's okay during the power failure, but when AP4 comes back up, I want to force AP5 to switch it's parent to AP4.You may ask why, if AP5 can reach AP3 okay, it's okay to leave it that way.
test --------packet loss %-----
speed AP3toAP5 AP3toAP4 AP5-AP4
===== ======= ======= =======
54M 100 0 0
48M 100 0 0
36M 52.6 0 0
24M 1.44 0 0
18M 0.89 0 0
So you can see it's desireable now that AP5 uses AP4 as it's parent.Over time, the system might figure it out, but our limited experience shows it seems to stick to the way it is.To complicate matters, sometimes we've found that it doesn't seem to reconfigure when the channel number has changed so AP5 can reach AP3, but AP4 (1524) comes up with a different channel on it's downlink radio. So, how can we force a mesh topology reevaluation/change for either 1 AP or the whole bridge group?I thought changing the bridge speed from "auto" to 54M (on AP3 above, for example) might force the attached children to rethink it, but it didn't seem to work (maybe I needed to wait an hour?).I also thought tweaks to "Radio Performance Profile" for radio might work. (not sure what to change, or how long to wait for a result)reseting APs and hoping they come back in a better topology is painful and slow.

I have to build a MESH topology with 1 Root Access Point and 4 Mesh Access Points which are 1552E.I have a wireless controller which is a WiSM 2 card into a 6500 chassis.I want to know if there is a pre-configuration to do on the AP before installing it, or if they are automaticaly discovered by controller (even for MESH AP which are NOT wired to LAN) ?

I have a number of existing 1140G Access points.I now need to purchase a couple of new AP's to expand coverage and it makes sense to go with the latest N standard ones.Currently I only have standalone models and at the moment I don't have the budget to purchase a management box to allow me to get centrally managed models.
If I purchase 1140N standalone AP's now, can I convert the to centrally managed ones later? If yes, Any disadvantage in doing this?

Can I connect 2 or more wireless repeaters to the same wireless base station signal to extend wireless coverage? I.e. The base station is located in the centre of the building and the signal covers the middle but not the extreme end of the building. I would like to add a repeater on each opposite sides of the signal's reach so it covers the complete building. I can't use LAN cable and the building has different electricity supply to the 3 different part of the building so can't use the mains to carry the signal. Is this possible using wirless repeaters or do I have to use wireless bridge units to connect to the base station and then output with wireless access points attached to the bridge unit to extend the wirless signal?

I need to setup wireless acces at the warehouse at my work. I have 3 D-Link DWL-2100AP's. 1 is connected to a switch and working properly as an access point. I was able to get another working as a repeater (WLAN light on) but cannot get the 3rd working as a repeater. I configured both repeaters the same way but with different ip addresses. (AP- .10, Repeater1 - .11 and Repeater2 - .12).
I guess the main thing I'm not understanding is how the 2nd repeater connects to the first repeater. Is it supposed to connect to the 1st repeaters MAC or to the AP's MAC? If I unplug the AP, the 2nd repeater won't pick up the 1st repeaters MAC. Both repeaters were connected to the AP. basically Switch -> AP -> Repeater -> Repeater.

I'm currently contemplating on purchasing a 2nd WRT54G router with dd-wrt as a 2nd wireless repeater in the house. Just wondering if this would be possible. Current setup is Main router (D-Link DIR-615) on 3rd floor > WRT54G as wireless repeater on 2nd floor. I don't mind the loss of connection speed since the main purpose is to increase coverage to the 1st floor.

I have an old metal-walled mobile home that I plan on converting to a combination shop and man-cave; it's about 200 feet from my home's computer room, where I have a Netgear WNDR3400 wireless-n router. The only place in the trailer where I can "see" my home network is the kitchen window, and I thought about putting a Wi-Fi repeater there to extend the home network into the trailer. But I have read that using a repeater will cut the network's Wi-Fi throughput in half -- which would not please my wife and daughters back at the house. Is there a simple, relatively inexpensive way to extend the network to the trailer without slowing everything down? Eventually I may have Charter install a separate cable hookup there, which would allow a separate high-speed Internet connection too. For now, I just want to "share" Wi-Fi to the trailer.

We have 4x WAP4410N access points 1 AP & 3 Repeaters, this works perfect. The situation at the moment is that the internet connection is plugged in with a cable on the AP but the question is that if it's possible to plug the internet connection into one of the repeaters?
After that are we still able to use the internet over al four access points?

We're upgrading our network (formerly 1 router, 1 outdoor antenna, and 1 router converted to a repeater) to provide wireless coverage for our members at a small beach club. To save money, our usual electrician will be running all the cabling for added antennas and repeaters; the networking guy will then do the terminations and hook up the equipment he's determined will work best for us. I'm supposed to order 1000' of cat 6 cable for the electrician to use, but I didn't realize there were so many options - I need to order the cable asap (i.e. today!), and neither the electrician or network guy are available over the weekend. The cable will be run from our office to our front gate, and to several outbuildings; buried underground for most of the first case, and run along the outside of and through several shed-like wooden structures in the other cases. The longest run will be about 250'. Because of our location the unburied cable would be exposed to salt air, sun, wind and rain, so I'm assuming it'll be run through plastic conduit or something where it needs to be outside.Do I want regular cat 6 or cat 6a? Double PVC shielded, gel-filled flooded, shielded mylar foil, or something I haven't yet run across?

What router would you choose to setup 1500 dmvpn tunnels (mGRE/ipsec)? so this router will be my hub and the hub will have 1500 tunnels.this router with this many tunnels will have to be able to provide excellent service to all spokes/tunnels.the spokes will mainly use the tunnels for business, transfering small files and some email I would say they may transfer 500megabyte of data per day but that's the absolute maximum.

I seem to be having an issue where certain very packets are being dropped/lost by my office router. The reproducible situation is, when I attempt a DNS zone transfer from my linux bind DNS server (A.A.A.A) to any server on my network behind NAT (Y.Y.Y.Y) the first packet (Seq 1) of the response is lost. The client making the query asks for first packet (Seq 1) to be resent, and the DNS server attempts to resend it repeatedly, but those are lost too.

I have a very special usecase with migrating devices from LMSv2.6 to v4.1 using DCR bulk import that was maintained manualy, not by discovering. The special thing is each device has its own SNMP-community and its about 1500 devices.RME discovery works fine, but I get the devices not discovered by DCR (CSDiscovery), because I need a minimal DCR discovery configration containing Seed and SNMP-settings. So I activated DCR as seed, but cant skip SNMP settings without an entry. But in this case I would need 1500 SNMP-lines that would be very unhandy. is in CSDiscovery-Settings a possibility to can leave SNMP settings untouched so it takes the credentials from the DCR, to can start DCR discovery?
