Cisco Wireless :: CT2504 / Bad LWAP Versus Good Standalone AP Coverage?
Jun 13, 2012
We have just installed our first CT2504.After install I have found a dramatic drop in signal strength compared to the wireless survey result obtained. All of our site surveys include real world testing using an AP, in this case a AP1041N.In doubt I retested a section using an AP1041N in the same location as one of the recently deployed LAP1041N.
In the same location a LAP1041N has between -10 and -20dbi difference in SNR compared to the test AP1041N.For example locations that tested with -60dbi using an AP1041N have little to no coverage using the LAP1041N installed. This applies irrespective of the WLC automatic control over Tx power or manually setting the LAP TX to the highest level.

Is Aironet 1260 good for indoor LWAP or CAPWAP environment? Do we need external antenna for the Aironet 1260 access point when using it indoor?

I have a number of existing 1140G Access points.I now need to purchase a couple of new AP's to expand coverage and it makes sense to go with the latest N standard ones.Currently I only have standalone models and at the moment I don't have the budget to purchase a management box to allow me to get centrally managed models.
If I purchase 1140N standalone AP's now, can I convert the to centrally managed ones later? If yes, Any disadvantage in doing this?

I have a few 1142N Aironets with internal antennas in place, and I am not thrilled by its coverage. I want to extend my wireless network because of a new building which led me to the following question; Is there is any difference in wireless coverage when using external dipole antenna’s (the small ones, for example the AIR-ANT2524 for a new 2600 Aironet) versus the internal (dipole) antenna’s. I am aware you have more options when using external antenna’s, such as omni, directional, outdoor etc.
For an indoor office or warehouse deployment, where temperature is not a concern, why would I buy for example the 2600E with 4 dipole antenna’s over the 2600i?I have read most Aironet datasheets and their antenna options, but can’t find a word about the advantages of external dipole antennas. I would expect external antennas would give better coverage.. is this true?

I have 8 2504 controllers and each needs to have a minimum of 20 MAC addresses added. I would rather not add them one at a time but I don't see any features that allow for an import. Any way to do the import?

I configured a 2504 controller with two LWAPP Access Points, and I'm using two SSID's on the same controller, the problem is when the user tries to switch between SSID's he gets an error message saying that the other network is unavailable but if he disconnects from the first network and then connects to the other it works fine !.

On the WLC I've set DHCP address pool, everything seems fine after ap download image -> reboot -> hit "Enter" to start blar blar blar... however, after a few second the WLC will initial upgrade image again and again. it's like a non-stop process.
Attached is the start up message, as you can see, i captured it after the ap successfully boot up, and WLC initial another cycle of image upgrade.
btw, my network is flat, WLC & AP all in the same network.

I've just been tasked with setting up 19 AIR-CT2504 WLCs with AIR-CAP3502E APs. The primary objective is to maximize throughput from clients uploading LARGE files over the air.
I need to make sure I config HT 802.11n properly with no support for legacy clients in the 5Ghz band.

We're in the process of upgrading our Wireless AP's from autonomus to LWAP. We're doing the upgrades remotely (we have 100's of sites to do, and it's not possible to be there to console on to each one), using a local computer to upgrade them to LWAP's with the Cisco Upgrade Tool.Having some inconsistent bugs pop up though from time to time. The most common one is that it basically buggers up the IP address after applying the recovery firmware image. It's supposed to keep the IP it had according to the IPFile.txt (for example 172.25.25.4), but it does something very weird... it keeps the last two octets (so 25.4 from the e.g) but replaces the first two octets with a 192.168 address. So the final address in this example after the UpgradeTool has done its work, is 192.168.25.4 - which is compeltely wrong.
This causes it to be unable to talk to the WLC (obviously, with bogus IP information it will struggle), and gives us big problems in that it wont ever come up unless someone can console to the AP and fix it. We can usually resolve the issue by munging about on the switch - switching the port it's connected to between access and trunk and doing some shut/noshut cycles seems to do the trick mostly.

I am using two AIR-CT2504-K9 controllers
Product Version.................................. 7.4.100.0
Bootloader Version............................... 1.0.16
Field Recovery Image Version..................... 1.0.0
Firmware Version................................. PIC 16.0
and 20 access points AIR-CAP2602I-E-K9 Cisco IOS Software, C2600 Software Version 15.2(2)JA, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) LWAPP image version 7.4.100.0
I created 3 SSID:
1. [WPA2][Auth(PSK)]
2. Web-Passthrough
3. [WPA2][Auth(PSK)]
Configuration on controllers is identical. High Availability is configured on all APs. First controller controls only those APs witch have SSIDs with [WPA2][Auth(PSK)], second controller is basically for APs with Web-Passthrough SSID. From the start I have problem, some clients who try to connect to SSID with PSK are dropped or can’t connect entirely, but when they go to the next AP they connect successfully. For example I have Android smartphone and Lenovo laptop, smartphone connects successfully but laptop fails connection to the same AP, but when I take it to other AP it connects successfully. Sometimes smartphones can’t connect too. When devise can’t connect to one SSID it can’t connect to other SSID either. Sometimes there are up to 20 clients tying to connect to the same AP.
When I look into logs, I get these two messages:
Jun 3 08:58:58 192.168.224.1 WLC1: *dot1xMsgTask: Jun 03 08:58:51.176: #DOT1X-4-MAX_EAPOL_KEY_RETRANS: 1x_ptsm.c:456 Max EAPOL-key M1 retransmissions exceeded for client 7c:e9:d3:f4:74:4d

I have an AIR-AP1242AG-E-K9 which had c1240-k9w8-mx.124-21a.JA loaded, I followed the link below and upgraded with Cisco’s upgrade tool to c1240-rcvk9w8-mx with no problems at all, after the upgrade I could then see the LWAP on the 4402 controller and had it working a treat. Now the problems begin, I brought it into the office where we have 5508 controllers, plug in the LWAP into our management switch and boot it up I get an IP assigned from the DHCP server and the AP goes into discovery mode but never finds the controller.I have logged the boot process but this does not give much away, our other 1100 series AP’s boot fine,

flashfs[0]: 0 orphaned files, 0 orphaned directories

And that is where she sits and does nothing more, I have noticed the DNS problems but the other 1100 series LWAP’s boot up after show that same issue.

I have a 1121 autonomous AP which I switched to the lightweight mode by copying the LWAPP ios to its flash and issuing the command boot system flash IOS_file_Name. After that I was unable to associate the AP to my wireless controller because it was continiously rebooting. Unfortunately this AP does not have a console port so I can access the debug and see what is happening. And I was not able to switch it back to the autonmous mode becaus the AP won't accept the Autonomous mode IOS anymore.

I have a 3502 AP that I am attempting to set back to factory default including clearing the username and password. It is going to work off of 4400 controllers. I have read numerous documents no how to clear the config and password but so far nothing has worked. I can get it into ap: mode but not sure what to enter here. When I do a dir there doesnt seem to be any files. It will pull an IP address via the local router but cannot communicate with WLC.

I am installing a small wireless network (for the firs time). The WLAN is connected to a router/firewall and consists of a Cisco 2960-C Series 8-Port Compact Ethernet Switch, a Cisco Aironet 2500 Series Wireless LAN Controller for Lightweight Access Points and a Cisco Aironet 1140 Series g/n Lightweight Access Points (five AP if I get it to work).
My problem is that when a client connects to the access point it does not get an IP-address.
In the WLC DHCP proxy is enabled and Internal DHCP server is used.
The scope is from 192.168.104.65 - 192.168.104.99
The WLC IP is 192.168.104.60
The DHCP server is given as 192.168.104.60
When starting the system I can see the the AP have the IP 192.168.104.66 so it seems the DHCP gives out IP-addresses. I can ping the AP.
When a client connects to the APit is asked for the security key and the client can be seen in the WLC monitor section. The client never gets an IP-address; in the WLC monitor 0.0.0.0 is shown.

I am running big wireless network, with 20no of 5500 with 7.0.116.0 version. I have more than 20,000 AP's. If i add some config in primary controller or do some changes or reboot all the AP's are moving to backup controller. this doesn’t have any problem, but many AP's which moved to backup controller are losing VLAN mapping. This happens every time. Primary --> backup, backup --> primary. Both controllers have same vern...same config etc..

I have a CT2504 at a customer site which does not load the captive portal page correctly nor will it load via HTTP as opposed to HTTPS.So for starters I did what I do with all my CT2504's (which work fine), I configured my Guest network to authenticate via the default captive portal. I then disabled HTTPS and SSH and enabled HTTP managment followed by rebooting the controller. On boot, logging into the WLC management GUI is automatically presented via HTTP as expected. However when clients access the Guest network they are redirected to the Web Authorisation via HTTPS instead of HTTP?In addtion to the above the captive portal page does not display correctly. The preview via the controller works fine, but the client is presented with a page with broken links to the images i.e. the blue strip at the top and the Cisco logo on the right.
