Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1721 / No Connection To LAN Port
Dec 12, 2011
I have a 1721 router installed with both an adsl wic and a 4 port switch wic card. My setup is as follows:
pc connected to port 3 (mode access on vlan 20) on the 4 port switch wic (installed in 1721 router)port 4 is configured as trunk (encap dot1q) and connected to fasethernet 0 (inbuild of 1721)fastethernet 0 configured with no ip address?
created sub-interface fastethernet 0.20 with encapsulation dot1q on vlan 20?ip address of sub interface 0.20 is 192.168.20.240?pc nic ip address is 192.168.20.245 however cannot ping 20.240?I want to use only this router with its switch wic for vlans and internet?

My company just assumed management of a remote entity. The network has several misconfigurations and I need to make some network modifications from my office w/o losing access or incurring lengthy outage to the clients. The network consists of 1721 router and three 2960 switches.
- I only have access to the router from the Internet. I telnet off the router to the 3 switches.
The site uses a single class C 192.168.1.0 / 24. The router is running RIPv2 even though this is the only network. The prior network person (contractor) set up separate native vlans on each switch and all the ports are defined as Native trunk and access are defined to the VLAN interface assigned to the switch. So of course the logs are flooded with Native VLAN mismatch, Each 2960 switch is a VTP server but has no VTP domain.
basic network layout:
Internet => Eth [Cisco 1721] => Fa 0 192.168.1.254 ==> [SW1]
[SW1]
interface Vlan1
no ip address
no ip route-cache!interface Vlan220ip address 192.168.1.219 255.255.255.0no ip route-cache
[code]....
!interface GigabitEthernet0/1description SW2 Gi0/1switchport access vlan 204switchport trunk native vlan 204!interface GigabitEthernet0/2switchport access vlan 204switchport trunk native vlan 204!interface Vlan1no ip addressno ip route-cache!interface Vlan204ip address 192.168.1.224 255.255.255.0no ip route-cache Normally, I would assign the current 192.168.1.254 to a subinterface to Router Fe 0/0 but with each switch having its own native VLAN I am afraid I will lose connectivity to the downstream switches -- my only access is telnet off the Cisco1721 Router.

Second laptop attached to cisco 10mb port with an IP address of 10.18.158.200 and the cisco interface 10.18.158.254.Okay, here is what is happening and I cannot work it out.If I ping, from Laptop 1 to the cisco subinterface on 192.168.94.253 it is succesful. If I ping from the 1721 to Laptop 1 it is successful. I see the VPN come up and the rulebase on the junipers show the traffic flowing across (ICMP).If I ping, from the 10.18.158.254 interface via telnet on the 1721, I can ping all the way through to 192.168.194.254, which is the gateway for Laptop 1.

I started to set up a 1721 router with WIC-4ESW. This is on an internal network, so only looking to just do routing from FA/0's interface to the networks attached to ports on the WIC. I first assigned just VLANs to 2 of the ports and this did not work. So I did some reading up and decided to use bridge groups. Except I still can not access the interfaces on the WIC. And by that I mean on the router itself I can not ping the ip assigned to the BVI.
I have another 1721 w/4 port that long ago I seem to remember simply assigning VLANs to the interfaces and I was able to communicate between the networks without issue (or maybe I just don't rememer that well). Thing is I should be able to at least ping the internal interfaces shouldn't I (assuming the status is up). I don't know why BVI2 and 3 are listed as down, nor do I seem to know how to bring these up.
This is what ip int br gives me:
1721#sh ip int br
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
BVI2 192.168.101.1 YES manual down down

I have set up a couple of vlans on a cisco 1721 router 4esw card using the vlan database and assigning an ip address of 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x for each vlan interface.Strangely enough connected computers can talk to the other vlan and I have not set any subinterfaces on the etherner0 (layer 3) and not even connected a cable. Is there any reason why this should happen since they should not talk to eachother being on seperate vlans.Doing a tracert shows that first the vlan ip address is hit and then straight to the target pc in the other vlan?

Long time since I have had to configure a router and have a small project
Here is what I have in a simple diagram:
PC(static IP)--to--Switch--to--(Ethernet0 int, WIC0)1721 router(FastEthernet0 int, built-in)--to--Switch--to--PC(DHCP)
I need static IP PC to be able to ping the DHCP client. Static IP units 10.1.1.x/16, DHCP clients 10.1.3.x/16.
I have found these overlap and thus give errors and will even shutdown the interface if I enable certain things like routing or bridging.
So I gather I need to change one interface IP range, which would be the DHCP side, I need to stay 10.1.1.x/16 for static side.

enable dot1q encapsulation on two ethernet ports on a 1721 router. I am able to configure it on the built in fastethernet port, but not on any interface provided by a WIC-1ENET or a WIC-4ESW. I have an application that requires two physical ethernet ports that support dot1q encapsulation.

I have a Cisco 1721 router with an ADSL wic. I have followed guides on the Cisco website so that I can connect the router to my home adsl connection. The router connects to my broadband provider and sucesfully obtains an IP address along with Dynamically assigned DNS servers. I am able to ping google.co.uk from the router but not from clients attached via DHCP.
I have noticed that if I ping the IP address of google.co.uk from a client it resolves but it will not resolve the name. This would lead me to believe that the problem lies with DNS resolution/forwarding but I do not know how to investigate further.

I am working on a backup system for my WAN. Verizon quoted the HWIC-3G-CDMA-V to work with my Cisco 1721 router. I have a bunch on these routers on a shelf and thought I would use them for the 3G network. Looking at the Cisco web site it does not list the 1721 as being able to work with this HWIC. I thought it might not be listed as the 1700 series are End of life. Whether it will work?

I am using a bunch of Cisco 1721 routers for my T1 lines. We recently purchased Digi cell modems as a backup for the T1. On configuring vrrp to work on both devices I discovered that IOS 12.3(6c) does not support the "vrrp track" feature. After reviewing the Cisco Feature Navigator I could not see an IOS that will support the vrrp object tracking. Is that correct? The routers have T1 WIC's installed. If it does work what is the latest IOS that will work on this end of life product?

I have connected a Cisco switch ( SG 200-08) to a HP switch, everything works fine when have the HP port as untagged, but I can't get out when I tag the HP port. Maybe this is a HP problem but we can tag other ports on it to other switches.
Is it some setting on the Cisco switch i need to do? I have put 7 ports as access and one as trunk.

On the supervisor card of a cisco 6500 series, according to the following link, [URL] it only has 2 uplink ports on the card. Would I be correct in assuming that I only have those to ports that I can configure IP addresses on?
The cisco that is being devlivere is coming with a 48 port switch and 24 port fibre switch. Could I change any of those ports into a router port and configure IP addresses on those?
The supervisor card is a ws-sup-720-3b the 48 port switch is a ws-x6748-ge-tx the 24 port fibre switch is ws-x6724-sfp

I'm trying to enable port security on several 4507R's. When I try to configure a range of ports the switch will randomly put 1 or 2 in err-disable. It's different every time I apply the config to the same group of ports. However if I do them one at a time it seems to work. But I really don't want to configure 6 fully populated switches one port at a time. We also have a lot of 3750's and they gave me no problem using a port range. [code]

We just installed a hosted VOIP system using Cisco 7900 series IP phones. We are having a strange issue with a few computers where they pull DHCP information from our VOIP provider's DHCP server on the Internet and not our LAN DHCP server.
The switchports areconfigured as: switchport mode access
My rationale behind this is that the phones would use CDP to get their VLAN info from the providers Cisco router and the PCs would just ride on the default VLAN. But this is not the case. Computers randomly keep getting DHCP info from the provider's router. Do I have to use voice vlan x and make the switchports trunks?

I have an all gigE 3560. I don't use the management FE0 port on the back. I was thinking to use that for a 100Mbps WAN connection.
Seems to work just fine when I plugged in an test. But I am not routing across that link yet as I still need to setup the far end.
Is there any reason this would not work? I would like to not burn a gig port if the max throughput of the circuit is 100Mbps.

I have a 3750g connected to a "core" switch stack of 7 other 3750g's via 2 GigE ports in a trunk. This is currently in a switchport mode access port- channel so only the default vlan data is sent over. Now we have a need due to physical location of these switches, to allow vlan20 (DMZ) from this 3750g to the switch stack. I will configure a few ports on the switch stack for vlan20 and they need to be able to talk to the stand alone 3750g.To do this I will change the port channel on both endpoints to
-switchport trunk ecapsulation dot1q
-switchport mode dynamic desirable
also making the appropriate change on the interfaces belonging to this trunk. My question is, now that its a trunk port that carries multiple VLANs, how much is the bandwidth reduced on that 2gbps link?I have a very active VLAN (10) on the stand alone switch, but on the core I'm not going to be assigning VLAN 10 to any ports. So does traffic from VLAN10 even come across the trunk (wasting bandwidth) if no ports on the core side are assigned to it? I really just need vlan 1 and 20 (for now).

I'm fairly new to Cisco products am in the process of developing my network knowledge on a deeper level. I have a 3825 with a HWIC-4ESW and I'm struggling to fully understand how the two "see" each other. I've setup a V LAN with a layer 3 address on the HWIC and added the switch ports to it. This seemed to allow devices connected to the switch ports to talk to the built-in router ports. I thought this was all making sense until i applied an access-list to the router port. It's a simple ACL i'm just using for testing and the only thing it does is blocks telnet from anywhere. I know the ACL is setup properly because if I connect a device directly to the router port i cannot telnet to the port. However, if i connect a device to one of the switch ports, i am able to telnet to the router port successfully.
It seems that I'm missing something with how traffic flows from the switch port to the router ports and how the two "see" each other.

I have a collapsed core design with routed ports between all components. Access layer switches, data center switches, core/aggregation. All routed (no spanning-tree at all).Now...I have to add an IBM BladeCenter with a BNT layer 3 switch to my topology. However, those nasties don't seem to support routed ports. How can I have a routed port on my cisco switch and a standard access port on the BNT and still establish an adjacency with an SVI? We have a stack of switches that is at the max number of members allowed in the stack. Problem is we are running out of port density and need to add more ports. So instead of adding a whole new stack I would rather replace 2 of the 24-port swicthes with 48-port switches.
If the two 24-port swicthes we are removing are stack members and neither of them are the stack master, I should be able to replace the 24-port switches with the 48-port switches without bringing the master offline? If the new 48-port switches are running the same IOS version as the current 24-port swicthes, they should add themselves to the stack?Would I have to tell the new 48-port swicthes what switch numbers they are replacing in order for them to be added to the stack since we are at the max number of members? Also since the 48-port swicthes are replacing 24-port switches will the master give the 48-port switches the configuration for only the 24-ports?

My company uses Cisco 891's in replacement of the 1811 where we would have DBU used via an external modem and a triggered time of 3 minutes after a primary connection failure was identified. In testing the 891 in a Layer 2 failure environment, it is within milliseconds that the v.92 port is engaging after the layer 2 failure. Has anyone been able to get it to attempt at a more than millisecond rate?

I have an problem with my new Cisco 876 Router. I configured port forwarding to access internal network devices from the internet . This works good from external but with my old Fritz box I was able to connect to this internal devices from the same internal network with the dyndns address.
So here is a short review for this:
DYNDNS Address port tcp 80 - > 192.168.0.80 tcp port 80
from ex tern it works but with source address example 192.168.0.20 to destination DYNDNS address tcp 80 (maps to 192.168.0.80 tcp 80 ) it doesn't work. Is there any trick in the config of cisco to let this scenario work?
