Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 - Switches Capable Of 10GB Port Density

Feb 5, 2013

I have 3560's in my current environment, operating in the core/distro/access layers. The switches are in a star configuration, performs only layer 2 switching, and utilizes copper (no plans on moving to fiber).
With a fairly limited budget, I've been contemplating on upgrading the central node to a stacked 3750X to eliminate that single point of failure, and trunk the rest of the 3560's to the stacked switch. I wanted to be sure that the 3750X switches will be right for my environment (90-100 hosts), and if what I explained above is a good solution.
I'm also looking like to upgrade 6-7 of my servers (and SAN) with 10GB network cards. Do the ports on the 3750X have port densities capable of 10GB? If not, what switches provide that capability?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SG500X-24 - Good Low Density (~24-port) 1 / 10GbE Switch?

Oct 22, 2012

We're looking for Cisco switches with the following attributes to serve as the core switches in a production network:1U (or close), fixed config20 or more 1GbE copper ports4 or more 1/10GbE fiber ports (SFP+)Not ridiculously expensive So far the closest fit we've found for these requirements is the SG500X-24.  However, since the SG500X-24 is a "small business" switch we're concerned that the reliability may not be up to the levels of Cisco's enterprise switches, the support level may not be sufficient, the 12MB packet buffer may not be enough to support wire-speed operation (or efficient communication between hosts on 1GbE and 10GbE ports), and so on.  But in looking through Cisco's entire current switch line (a daunting task...) this seems to be the switch that best fits the specifications above. So, some more appropriate switch that fits the listed requirements?s why the SG500X-24 would be a poor choice for a production network? Have you had positive experiences with using the SG500X-24 as a mission-critical switch?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 Multiple Switches One Trunk Port

Sep 21, 2012

We have 7 3560's in 7 different locations connected to our providor for wan access.  Our provider has given us a copper cable at each point and we have connected it directly to our 3560 switch at each location.  Each port is configured the same way at each location.  Each switch is running eigrp.All of the switch ports on each switch are configured as a trunk and vlan 299 had the ip address for the eigrp connection: [code] This setup is working as each switch see's all of the other switches as an eigrp neighbor.  We have also made sure that the switch at our head office has spanning tree priority for vlan 299.
So the problem is, if there is a change in the topology at one of the locations it usually causes one or more of the other connections to go down for some reason.  We just cannot pinpoint what is causing this change.  There are no log's or anything other than an eigrp hold time expired message.?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3550 - IP Routing In L3 Capable Switches?

Apr 11, 2012

Is L3 ip routing on by default in 3550s?  If so is the "ip routing" command visible in the config file?  If no - I assume that one would enable L3 routing with that config command.In general terms are there any IOS devices where ip routing is enabled and one would not see the "ip routing" command in config.  I.E. if that command is not visible in the config could you assume there is no L3 capablity in that device?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: WS-C2960S-48TS-L / Reasons To Limit 1Gb Capable Switches To 100Mb?

Jul 8, 2012

Our network administrator restricts all our new 1Gb switches to only 100Mb, to which he claims it will increase overall performance. Preventing devices from bottlenecking the network. (that is, only restricting the main switch ports, not the uplinks)For example we have a new building with 2x WS-C2960S-48TS-L connected together with FlexJack and then a 1Gb Fiber connection back to our core switch.
This building is on it's own subnet and there is little broadcast traffic. I don't see the point other than it hinders the potential speed we could use. Labs are set up in this building and 1Gb is MUCH faster when it comes to imaging and software deployment.

Cisco Switching / Routing :: 3560 - Management Port Used As Regular Port?

Jan 30, 2012

I have an all gigE  3560.  I don't use the management FE0 port on the back.  I was thinking to use that for a 100Mbps WAN connection.

Seems to work just fine when I plugged in an test.  But I am not routing across that link yet as I still need to setup the far end.

Is there any reason this would not work?  I would like to not burn a gig port if the max throughput of the circuit is 100Mbps.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 Switches Hang Off With Sub Interface

Jul 22, 2012

Was building a small network in Cisco Packet Tracer and ran in to an issue.  I have 4 routers running OSPF, and off one of the routers I have 5 3560 Multilayer switches.  The router that the switches hang off of, I have a sub-interface with dot1q encapsulation, set for vlan 10 and an IP Address.  The switches have interface vlan 10 configures, and have IPs in the same subnet.  From that router, I can ping/telnet to all the switches without issue.  My problem arises when I try and reach those switches from any other router.  OSPF is set to redistribute static and connected subnets.The routing table is populated correctly on all the routers.  When I ping and trace the packet, it looks like it makes it all the way to the respective switch, but the packet never makes it back.  I've played with the default route on the switches to no avail.  Am I trying to implement this incorrectly, or am I just missing something?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 CG Port Goes Down When Configuring Trunking

Jan 31, 2012

I have a 3560 8 port switch.  Int gi0/9 is trunked to another switch downstream.  When I try to configure int gi0/10 to trunk to a switch upstream the interface on the switch goes down and I have to either reboot the switch or plug directly into the switch and telnet into it to turn off trunking on the interface.  When I configure trunking on the interface on the upstream switch that connects to this interface the same happens on that switch.  The upstream switch is a 3750 with 12 sfp ports.  Several interfaces are trunking to other switches from this switch.  Spanning tree is not configured on the 3750 at all , and is not configured on either gi0/10 or gi0/9 on the 3560.  I was consoled into the 3560 during a reboot after the interface went down, a message came up that said something like "Spanning Tree returning gigabit ethernet 10 to constant state"  Why would I get this message if spanning tree is not enabled on the gig ports on either end of the trunk? There is no loop to require spanning tree to shut down an interface.  I have several other 3560's configured as I would like to configure this switch and they are trunking without issue.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Port / MAC Based DHCP For 2960 And 3560

Jan 3, 2012

I want to implement port-based and MAC-based in these two switches: 2960 & 3560 (both of them have this IOS version: 12.2(55)SE1). And I haven't found a way to implement both of them at the same time. This is what I got:
ip dhcp use subscriber-id client-id
ip dhcp subscriber-id interface-name
ip dhcp excluded-address
ip dhcp excluded-address

With this configuration I can use port-based, but not MAC based. If I remove the first two lines and change the last line for this one:

address client-id 0112.ae1d.af58.60

Then, the computer with that MAC address got the correct IP, but then the port-based doesn't work. Also, I got this line in the interface what I want to use MAC-based:

ip dhcp server use subscriber-id client-id

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Air-Print / Bonjour Traffic Not Flowing On 3560 Switches

Jan 16, 2013

We are in the process of rolling out iPads to our offices.  As part of this implementation, we need to print from the iPads to our network printers.  Our network printers are mostly HP and Xerox and do not have native Apple AirPrint capabilities.  As such, we have been using the FingerPrint software to share out the network printers as Apple AirPrint printers.  We have a mixture of switches at our offices.  Most offices utilize a 3550 PoE switch.  In these offices the AirPrint traffic is being transferred successfully and everything works great. In the offices which are using 3560 PoE switches, the traffic is never seen at the iPads.  We are using EnGenius EAP300 access points connected into the Cisco switches to provide wireless access to the iPads. Both 3550 and 3560 switches are running iOS 12.2(25). What might be stopping/blocking the AirPrint traffic on the 3560 switches?
