Cisco :: L3 4948E-E/4948E-S Switch With ASA Configuration?

Dec 5, 2012

I have been asked to look at designing a network internally. I have no control of the upstream network besides requesting changes.Essentially I'm confused as to the best way to approach configuring the following and wondered if you could share any experiences. It's stretching the limits of a CCNA IMHO, although I understand a lot about networking this is one area where I'm a little sketchy.

Kit list:

4948-E-S or E-E switches.
Cisco ASA 5545 firewalls
Cisco ASA 5520 firewall
& Multiple L2 switches

- I have 3 subnets in total, a /29 for routing and two larger subnets routed to the /29

What I'm trying to do:

1) Have some hosts protected by the ASA 5545 firewalls, probably in routed mode (that's the confusing part). I cannot use NAT so the inside interface/VLAN would need public IP's.

2) Have some hosts not protected by the ASA, therefore straight out onto the public Internet with no firewall whatsoever, they connect directly to the L3 or to the L3 via a L2 switch.

3) Have the ASA 5520 take an IP from the public (non-protected range), as this will be a VPN endpoint too and will also need to have NAT enabled. This should be easy as it just takes an IP from a public subnet, the ASA 5545's are the tricky part as they cannot use NAT at all. I've also been advised not to use Transparent mode either.

4) L3 switches are essentially external switches, doing the routing for our subnets, before upstream.

5) Upstream provider provides gateway with HSRP, we're looking at using HSRP and a routing protocol on our side over two 4948 switches. Any recommendations on this?

6) Further to point 5, we do not currently have any ability to do BGP or anything. That would be done by a separate team, upstream.

Note: I've also got to justify the use of each IP to the network management team, they are quite stingy so I have to be careful that I don't waste too many IP's for core network. So what I'm thinking is I have to create subnetworks of my main subnets to break them up into smaller pieces, and then add some onto the inside interface of the ASA and others will be on the L3 switch. Then of course route the networks to the ASA outside IP. Saying that, I'm not clear if I should create a /29 or /30 to route to the outside of the ASA or grab one from the larger subnet as it were? The final outcome is that we can connect a machine directly to the Internet or behind a firewall, depending on the requirements for that individual device. All devices will have public IPs.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Configure 2960 8 Port Switch With DHCP Server?

Jun 24, 2012

I need to configure a Cisco 2960 switch as a DHCP server.    The current IP address will be on a different seed than the DHCP addresses.  i.e.

Switch IP = 10.1.2.3, GW = 10.1.2.1, Subnet = 255.255.255.0
DHCP addresses would be 192.168.1.1 - 200, GW=???? (10.1.2.3?) and subnet would be 255.255.255.0

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Configure Switch Layer 3 Port Connected To Firewall

Feb 26, 2012

I have a switch layer 6500  series connected to a firewall, the port configuration between them is  layer 2, in another words I do not configure an IP address in the Cisco  switch port to conected it in the firewall, but when a apply a policy on  firewall it lose communication with others vlans, just the vlan that is  connected between the switch and firewall works, attachment the design.  I think that is necessary to configure the connection between the  firewall and switch as layer 3 ( a port with IP address in the switch),  but I would like to know why? The switch is configured with about 10  vlan and it is a inter vlan routing, a default route is configured in  the switch where the gateway is the firewall.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Cat2960 Gigabit Port Not Working?

I've done the following:
switchport
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1
no shutdown

In other words, I've fiddled with it. But I don't know why it doesn't light up..

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4500 24-port Gigabit Module Being Picky

Jan 7, 2013

We have recently purchased a Cisco 4506 that has several Gigabit Ethernet modules installed. One of the Ethernet Gigabit modules - a WS-X4424-GB-RJ45 - is being picky with who it talks to at Gigabit Ethernet.

If I plug a laptop into one of it's RJ45 ports using a Cat 6 cable, nothing happens.  No link light, no notification of link up or down on port statistics, absolutely nothing. If I plug a server into the same port it works fine at Gigabit Ethernet (even using the same Cat 6 cable).I can get the module to recognize a laptop if I fix the speed/duplex on the laptop to 100Mb/Full. I have tried this with other staff laptops from different vendors (HP / Dell / etc.) all with the same result.

The module directly underneath this module - a WS-X4448-GB-RJ45 - works fine for both laptops and servers.  We have tried swapping the module positions but to no avail.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960G High Output Drops Only On Gigabit Switch

Feb 11, 2013

I just got a Cisco 2960G 24-port gigabit switch so that our HP servers can have a Gigabit connection to the network. I moved 2 servers to it (HP Proliant DL380's)  but they don't actually seem to be able to achieve even close to 1000Gbps. I ran same some LAN bandwidth tests and it was showing only around 200-300 Mbps between all of them. I also ran a network stress test utility, LAN Tornado, and it was showing packet loss as high as 60% when on gigabit, and only .07% when on 100Mbps.

-Both the NIC's and the switch ports are set to 1000/Full

-Currently using Cat5e cabling no more than 25Ft in length (I know Cat6 would be better but Cat5e is supposed to support Gigabit)

-All servers are on the same VLAN

Here are the port statistics when running just a stress test @ 10Mbps that had a 45% packet loss. What's odd though is when I set the servers and switches to 100Mbps, I get less than 1% packet loss.

GigabitEthernet1/0/16 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 203a.07ff.7e90 (bia 203a.07ff.7e90)
MTU 9000 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit/sec, DLY 10 usec,

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560X - Using 10 / Duplex Half On Gigabit Port Not Working?

Sep 4, 2012

I'm in the process to install two 4948E switches.  I will be configuring GLBP and wanted to get some guidelines on configuring GLBP and EIGRP:

- First question is like HSRP I'm configuring it on both swithches like this:

Switch 1:
interface vlan 5
ip address 10.1.5.249 255.255.255.0
glbp 5 ip 10.1.5.1
glbp 5 priority 110
glbp 5 preempt
glbp 5 authentication md5 key-string xxxxxx

[code]....

- Second question is about EIGRP, when I configure EIGRP on the main switch that is AVG with the following commands, will I also have to run the same commands on the second 4948 E too?

router eigrp 10
network 10.1.5.0 255.255.255.0

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3825 ISR - Traffic Route From Switch Port To Router Port

Jun 5, 2013

I'm fairly new to Cisco products am in the process of developing my network knowledge on a deeper level.  I have a 3825 with a HWIC-4ESW and I'm struggling to fully understand how the two "see" each other.  I've setup a V LAN with a layer 3 address on the HWIC and added the switch ports to it.  This seemed to allow devices connected to the switch ports to talk to the built-in router ports.  I thought this was all making sense until i applied an access-list to the router port.  It's a simple ACL i'm just using for testing and the only thing it does is blocks telnet from anywhere.  I know the ACL is setup properly because if I connect a device directly to the router port i cannot telnet to the port.  However, if i connect a device to one of the switch ports, i am able to telnet to the router port successfully.

It seems that I'm missing something with how traffic flows from the switch port to the router ports and how the two "see" each other.
