Nov 19, 2012

I search at all cisco pages about support of VSS quad supervisor 2T support.Even relase notes, q&a etc. But until now I don’t found any pros or contra. Customer use the newest IOS 15.1.1-SY Customer uses already several system with quad sup720, has also experience.Customers actual state is:With quad sup 2T the 2nd sup2t of each VSS-chassis drops in rommon.Without VSS the same sup2t comes up either as active or standby!

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Quad VSS

Jul 12, 2011

We are getting ready to start testing Quad VSS for our production VSS environments we have done the research and per documentation it seems pretty straight forward.

I want to make sure that the dual to quad VSS is easily done across our multiple VSS setups and I am curious of those that have done this already have you ran into any gotchas on the turn up of the ICS Sup?

Also, just a ICS in a single chassis instead of one in both chassis of the VSS?

In one of our environments we have all single home devices going to VSS switch 1 and only dual homed devices. going to switch 2 so may be desireable to only install an ICS in the switch 1 VSS.

Cisco WAN :: Slow BGP Convergence With Catalyst 6500 Quad

I set up Catalyst6500 Quad-SUP VSS system.I have a problem with slow BGP convergence(80sec) on VSS switchover.Each chassis has a bgp peer and "bgp graceful-restart" is disabled.I investigated BGP behavior with "debug ip bgp events" and "debug ip bgp update".I found that BGP process waited a peer to reply until timeout and after the timeout BGP table was calculated.I guess this timer makes the convergence slow.How can I adjust this timer value ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 5000 LAN Routing Connection Deployment

May 16, 2013

We have our Nexus as our default gateway (101.1) and the default VLAN1 is setup with two subnets 101.X and 102.X. The DHCP server is using a superscope setup to accomodate the overflow of devices requesting IPs on 101, so when 101 is consumed persons are able to obtain a 102.X IP address. The setup is basic on superscope. The issue is some times the routing to the firewall with a 102.X is not always 100%. Somedays all goes well and the 102 subnet is routed out to the firewall and its a good day. However, such as today a 102.X address is not routing as it did 24 hours ago. I am perplexed as to why this is behaving unpredicatable. Here is running-config for VLAN1 to show the 102 as secondary address to VLAN1.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6506 Staged VSS Deployment Upgrade

Apr 2, 2013

We currently have an existing 6506 in data center that we want to add another 6506 to and do a VSS implementation.I'm trying to minimize down time so our current basic plan was to do the following:

1. Bring up the new 6506 and configure it for VSS
2. Trunk a port between the new 6506 and the production 6506
3. Physicall move connections from the production 6506 to the newly connected VSS switch
4. After all physical ports have been moved, power off the original 6506 swap the supvisor card out for the new 2T Sup card
5. Configure original 6506 for the virtual domain and then connect the VSL's.

According to the documentation, to run "switch convert mode virtual"  the standby unit has to be in hot standby.  This means I can't run this prior to moving the connections over, which means once I run "switch convert mode virtual" it will reboot the switches (~ 9 minutes of down time).  Is there anyway around this?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3850 Versus 3750x For New Deployment

May 6, 2013

What is the preferred access switch for new deployment. Choosing between 3850 and 3750x. I have to say that the 3850 wireless features will not be used in this deployment and 4 switch for stack is enough... Looked and read everything that I found in the press, I can not make an informed choice. I bow to 3850, but I was apprehensive following circumstances:1) not too positive reviews2) to long list of open caveats3) to long list of features are not supported in Cisco IOS XE Release 3.2.0SE4) IOS XE : (With regard to the first three points - yes, I understand that the product is new and it has not gone further stage of "childhood diseases" ...Regarding the fourth point - I understand correctly that this is the direction to be moving Cisco Systems  and soon all products migrate from classical IOS to IOS XE and so on?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6506 Deployment Redundancy Links Different Length

Sep 26, 2012

I am still working on the design of my big project and always that you think that every thing is solve, appears a details.We need to deploy a fiber links to some buildings that will have access switches connected to the Core. I have been reading about ethernet ring topologies and quite differents to the hierarchical model because of the using of Ressilent Ethernet Protocol instead of STP or RSTP.My question is which of the next to scheme will be the best?

1.- Deployment an ethernet fiber ring topology with REP? Consider that the edge Switch of this ring will be my Core and this one is connected to my distribution switches in a hierarchical topology. In this situation, Acces Switch 1-A is connected to Acces switch 1-B, Access Switch 1-B to 1-C and Switch 1-C to the Core. Feel fre to recomend me wich switches and considerations are the best. We conssider 1 Catalyst 6506 Chasis for the Core and catalyst c2960s-48-TDL for acces, maybe the 3750x series. Each Acces node in the ring topology will have a maximun of 50 end devices.

2.- Deployment a Fiber ring but not connecting each switch with the next. In this case we want to ensure redundancy to the core wih equal costs path, but because of the ring each switch won´t have equal length link to the core. In this situation, Acces Switch 1-A is not connected to Acces Switch 1-B is connected directly to the core but the fiber cable will take the route to Access Switch 1-B, to Acces Switch 1-C and finnally to The Core Switch. This apply to the other to Switches. Note now that Acces Switch 1-A will have a 281 Ft link to the core and a second 1612Ft. link to the core. Here comes the question this differents lenght will negative affect RPVSTP ? or It doesn´t matter? Can i setup an etherchannel/load balance in this situation?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2800 Series Router - Multicasting Windows Deployment Services

Mar 25, 2012

We have recently implemented Windows Deployment Services on our local network, but everytime we do a multicast image deployment the network get flooded to point of total saturation.

We have Netgear switches and a Cisco 2800 series router. IGMP Snooping has been enabled on all Switches, however, we are unsure on how to implement multicasting on the router.

The whole network is flat - no VLANs over than the default VLAN1. We only want multicasting to work within our local network and does not need to go out the other side of the router as that is the connection to the internet.

How to get the Cisco router configured properly to enable multicasting to not flood the network. It seems that even if we were to image 4 PCs using multicast this is enough to completely get the network flooded.

Also, am I right in thinking that IGMP needs to be enabled on all of the Switches?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 / High Switching Processor Utilization?

Sep 20, 2012

I am seeing a strange situation on my 6500 switch?By having snmp walk on '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3' (== cpmCPUTotal5sec), I came to know that there are two processor and the cpu util for switching processor is gone to 88 % and some time creeps to 99 %.

snmpwalk -v2c -c "removes"  sw6500 '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3'
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.1 = Gauge32: 12 (--- this is for CPU of Router Processor )
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.3 = Gauge32: 99 (--- this is for CPU of Switching Processor )

but when I do sh process cpu on the console, all looks normal as it shows cpu utilization of RP.  why the value is so high on the switching processor ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 / Restricting Inter-VLAN Routing?

May 9, 2013

I'm looking to restrict Inter-VLAN routing through L3 switch (cisco 6500) and wanted to know best possible way to do it. I used VACL and achieved success to some extent, but my config is making clients take up to 5-6 mins to authenticate IP address from the DNS (bootps).My VACL config was as follows:

Subnet to restrict is 10.100.15.0 (VLAN 15)
 STEP 1: Created extended ACL to allow bootpc/bootps through DNS
ip access-list extended EACL_DNS
permit udp any eq bootps any
permit udp any eq bootpc any

STEP 2: Created standard ACLs to allow only relevant subnet, server VLANs & some IPs from other subnets for printers/scanners etc.

ip access-list standard SACL_VLAN_15
permit 10.100.15.0 0.0.0.255 (the subnet I'm restricting)
permit 10.100.50.0 0.0.0.255 (server VLANs)
permit 10.100.25.45 0.0.0.0 (printer in another VLAN which has to have access in VLAN 15)

STEP 3: Created VLAN access list

vlan access-map VACL_15 10
match ip address EACL_DNS
action forward
 vlan access-map VACL_15 20
match ip address SACL_15
action forward

STEP 4: Applying VLAN Access list on VLAN 15 vlan filter VACL_15 vlan-list 15 Though the above works, below is noted:

1. I'm still able to PING 10.100.15.2 (the switch virtual interface) from outside the subnet, which I don't intend to do so. Howeve all cients in the subnet have no connectivity from outside the VLAN 15.

2. As mentioned its taking quiet some time to negotiate with the DNS server at system boot time.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 ACL Using QoS Not Working

Jul 16, 2012

We are setup like a hotel style workers camp.  We have wings full of rooms and residents with 3750 stacks in them.  Those switches connect back to our core 6500's.  The network is mostly all Layer 3, interfaces are routed with IPs.

When it was built before my time they included an ACL for each wing so that residents couldn't access internal devices (IE SSH to 6500) but I've come to notice it's not working.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 - Hardware QOS Trust?

May 8, 2012

I have a question which i am unsure of, on the 6500 i know i can set mls qos trust to cos or dscp since I don't have any trunks configured on that switch that i want to trust cos most of my ports trust dscp instead. The question is will packets coming in or going out at L3 with the TOS bits set get placed in the correct in/out queue. For example if a packet comes in on a port with a mls qos trust dscp and has the TOS set to XX will this XX get mapped to the correct COS value based on the default dscp to cos map and end up going out the correct queue which handles that specific COS number?

I mainly asked this because i saw the following on the cisco site and again i am suing dscp trust and not cos.

Weighted Round Robin (WRR), Deficit Weighted Round Robin (DWRR) and Shaped Round Robin (SRR). WRED and all the Round Robin scheduling options use the priority tag (CoS) inside an Ethernet frame to provide enhanced buffer management and outbound scheduling.
