Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 Vlan Flapping Between Port-channels

Mar 10, 2012

We have a pair Cisco 6509 switch in which 2 * 48 Port 1G line cards and 1 * 16 Port 10G line Card, FWSM and Sup 720 are installed.We have Cisco UCS and HP Blade servers.Cisco UCS servers are connected to Cisco 6509 switch using Fabric Interconnect, and HP Servers are directly connected to core switches.Recently the team made many changes in the network. Upgraded the IOS in Cisco 6509 switch, Configured Port profiling , MAC Pinning , HBA Cards to UCS / Nexus 1000V Infrastructure. After this change they lost the connectivity to UCS and HP Serers. Every tower is checking at their end.

The Network Team has reverted back the core switch with old IOS , but still the problem persisit.I could only see the following error log in the core switch. There are two port-channels one between core 1 and core 2. The other is between core switch and FWSM module. [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Set Port Vlan On 6509 Running In Vtp Client Mode

Jan 14, 2013

I'm working at a company that has several 6509 switches running CatOS.  They have two of the 6509's running in vtp server mode and the rest as clients.  I set up a new vlan from one of the vtp servers and it propagated out.  The problem comes when I try to assign a port on one of the vtp clients to this new vlan.  It gives me an error that the switch must be in vtp server mode to add/delete vlans.  I'm not trying to add/or delete a vlan just trying to add a port into an existing vlan.  I'm hesitant to put the switch in vtp server mode.  Is this a CatOS thing or is there a specific command to accomplish this?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 - Can't Change Native Vlan On Trunk Port?

Jun 6, 2012

I have several closets with Cisco 3560 on the edge that I'd like to change the vlan that's used for the management vlan on each. In the core I have a Cisco 6509 with Sup720's.

I'd like to do this by changing the native vlan on the trunk port on the core 6509 interface that connects to the 3560. and leave the management vlan on the 3560 as vlan 1.

Seems trivial but what I tried didn't work and I didn't have the window to troubleshoot. I'll paste the simplified configs for  the interfaces  below

!
6509 configs:

interface Vlan50ip address 172.16.50.2 255.255.255.0!interface FastEthernet

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7009 - VPC Cluster To VSS Using Port-Channels

Nov 6, 2012

We have a vPC cluster of two Nexus 7009 that needs to be connected with a VSS cluster of two Catalyst 6509s. The VSS has been working fine for a while and the vPC cluster is new equipment.

Attached there is a detailed diagram of the connections; the VSS cluster connects the interfaces Ten1/2/8 and Ten 2/2/8 using the PortChannel 28 going to the the vPC cluster to the interfaces Eth 4/18 of each switch.

Both the vPC and the VSS are well configured; last night we tried to brought up the connection between the two clusters but only the first interface comes up within the etherchannel; the secondary one did not come up and shows (not receiving LACP packets).

We know Layer 1 is fine because if we remove the interface from the EtherChannel it does come up; but causes some STP loop and bring the network down; thus the solution is to form a EtherChannel.

At the VSS Clúster we see LACP packets being sent with sh lacp counters but we DO NOT see LACP packets being received in the interface of the secondary Nexus.

Right now, this is not possible to troubleshoot since it is a production enviroment; so I'm looking for problems with the configuration or recommendations to follow in order to apply them tomorrow night during a new maintenance window.

These are the configurations:

interface port-channel418

Cisco Switching/Routing :: WS-6148A - Port Flapping Due To MTU Mismatch?

Jun 4, 2012

We have some legacy Cisco 6513 switches with the backbone (16-port GBIC blade) MTU set to 1500.  It has a WS-X6148A-GE-TX blade as well, MTU set to 9K.

Now we have a customer sending MTU of 1546, their copper interface terminating on WS-6148A keeps flapping.  Does the flapping have something to do with the backbone set to 1500?  We cant set the backbone to 9K at this moment since it may be intrusive (reuire a reboot).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 2248 / Port-Channels On N2K Not Load Balancing?

Sep 5, 2012

I have a dual-homed fabric (Nexus 2248 dual attached to two Nexus 5020's via vPC).  On this Nexus 2248 is a server that has a four port LACP etherchannel.  The ports do not appear to be load balancing correctly.  The output below shows the four ports in use and it clearly shows port e138/1/10 as getting the most use.  When I use the "show port-channel load-balance forwarding-path..." command on either of the vPC switches for various source and destination IP's that use this link, it shows them correctly load-balancing across the four ports.  But we do not see this when looking at stats on both the server side and the switch side.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 - Adding Port Channels In Existing STP Topology

Apr 3, 2013

current topology is build from 4 6500 switches connected in a ring topology. Using Port channel (2x 10Gbit) links to connect left side top and bottom 6500's (DC1), 10 G bit link to connect right side 6500's (DC2) In between a 1 G bit link is used to connect top 6500's (DC1-DC2) and the same for bottom 6500's (DC1-DC2).

Path costs are 5 and 6 so the T5/4 from bottom right is blocking. Bandwidth demands are increasing, so thinking about adding extra 1 G bit links to the existing ones and create ether channels. Path costs here are 4 and 5, so T5/4 from bottom right is still blocking, but when the bottom 2 G bit port-channel is loosing one 1 G bit link the path costs of both directions become equal. So I am worried that STP will not re converge and leave me with a congested 1 G bit link. I cannot test this setup in a lab, are there any options for STP to re-converge here?

I have two 3750s, I have two gig on each 3750 port-channle to po1 and connected to both the core, one link to each core.Now, I was asked ot add two more links on each 3750 switch to make it a total of 4 gigs on each 3750s (all 4 gig ports/uplinks will be in used an dtwo links to core one an dtwo links to core 2).when i added two additional links on 3750s and bundled them to po1, I created another port channel on core and bundeled the additional two gigs on each core to accomodate for the two additional links (ports on core switches are not consequtives).

adding these two additional ports makes the 3750 switches flap between managemnet vlan and po1.now, i am not sure if I must have added the two additional links on the core to teh current port-channel or core!? I have created another port-channel on core to accomodate for this currently!?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Stack Mac Persistent Timer Lacp Port Channels C3750

Sep 27, 2012

I am having an issue on a Cisco 3750 stack where when the stack master is rebooted, all my lacp port-channels drop and then come back up again. After doing some investigation It seems that it is happening because of lacp using the stack master mac-address as part of the system-id, so when the stack master reboots, the stack mac changes. I see that there is the command: stack-mac persistent timer 0

There is this warning about using this command:

When you configure this feature, a warning message displays the consequences of your configuration. You should use this feature cautiously. Using the old master MAC address elsewhere in the domain could result in lost traffic.

My question are:

Are there any other consequences to using this command (apart from moving the switch/mac to another location in the network)It mentions 'If the entire switch stack reloads, it acquires the MAC address of the master as the stack MAC address' Is this still the case if you have the stack-mac persistent timer to 0? Does using channel-group mode on for the port-channels still use the same mechanism of having a system-id? (Will the channels flap using 'mode on' when rebooting the stack master.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 - Inhibit Vlan Routing

Nov 8, 2012

I would like to ask you if it's possibile to block routing between some Vlan for just once of them.

Maybe I can explain better:

I've got a Cisco 6509 with 4 configured vlan interfaces
Int Vlan 10  10.10.1.0/24
Int Vlan 20  10.10.2.0/24
Int Vlan 30  10.10.3.0/24
Int Vlan 40  10.10.4.0/24

Vlan "10" is the phone voip Vlan and it must not talk with the others Vlan. The others Vlan can comunicate normally except with Vlan "10".

Pratically Vlan "10" needs to be isolated from the others.

This equirement comes becouse Vlan 10 is wireless and has the WEP key encryption (very weak protocol). Some Phone couldn't support the WPA2 key and I need to avoid an unauthorized external client, cracking the WEP key and connecting to this WiFi, could have free access to the others Vlan.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Disable Administrative Native Vlan Tagging On 6509?

Dec 13, 2012

We have a problem with CDP packets on sent by our Cisco 6509's.  Unlike our other Cisco switches (4948G, 5020, etc.), the 6509 tags administrative traffic on the native vlan.  As a result the CDP packets are sent with an 802.1Q header with a tag of 1.  The other switches send the CDP packets untagged on the native vlan.  This causes problems because we have non-Cisco devices in our lab that also receive and send CDP, but they do not process the packets that are tagged by the 6509.  They see the packets from the 4948 and 5020 just fine.

How can I disable the administrative native vlan tagging on the 6509?  Here is the current setup:

nwkdev-6509-1#show vlan dot1q tag native
dot1q native vlan tagging is disabled globally
nwkdev-6509-1#show interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/9/1 switchport

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Net-flow Not Reporting Egress Traffic On 6509 Vlan

Nov 27, 2011

We have a pair of 6509 working in a VSS configuration (IOS 12.2(33)SX5). The 6509s connect to a pair of ASAs (7.2 code) running in an Active/Standby setup. These ASAs in turn connect to routers going to remote sites. I have configured Netflow on the following VLANS,

VLAN 10 - Servers Vlan
VLAN 9 - Transit/ASA VLAN (connects ASAs to 6509s). All traffic originating from any VLAN on the 6509 crosses this VLAN in order to reach remote sites and vice versa

I configured the netflow source VLAN 11 although I am not collecing any netflow from it.Although I have been getting lots of Netflow info, I noticed that netflow for traffic originating from any user VLAN on the 6509s going to any remote site via TRANSIT/ASA VLAN(9) does not get reported, I even tested with 4 GB traffic but no result. Only reverse traffic (i.e. from remote site to user VLAN) is reported as it traverses the Transit VLAN (9).

I read somewhere that egress netflow is not supported in 6500, but isnt traffic originating from a user vlan to a remote site via the transit VLAN (9) considered ingress with respect to the transit VLAN (9)? I would like to know whether bidirectional Netflow is supported on 6500 VLANS. I have mimimum control on routers beyond the ASAs, and since these ASAs run 7.2 code netflow is not supported, and Monitoring this Transit Vlan gives me extremely useful info.

I do get netflow biderectional traffic from the Server Vlan 10, but I think it is correlated by the netflow collector from vlans 9 and 10. [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 Trunk To Port Channel

1-Configure PortChannel and add the 3 new ports, this will bring up the Port Channel but what effect will this have on traffic currently going over the single Trunk link? Will spanning tree go mad, how will switches react?

2-Convert existing Trunk link to Portchannel then add in new ports to PortChannel, I guess in doing this there will be a small hit on traffic as it changes to a port channel.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509-E Switches Interconnected On Layer 3 Port Channel

Oct 3, 2012

We are currently designing  Layer 3 to the edge EIGRP solution  for our customers. The network is a hybrid of collapsed  core (Core to access) as well as a three layer design (Core/Distro/Access) for connectivity to the Data Centre, Internet, Wireless Blocks etc.The  core of the network contains two 6509-E switches interconnected on a  Layer 3 Port channel (no VSS). Access Layer switches (3750-X series running Stackwiseplus protocol)  connect to the core switches over p2p routed links and Distribution layer switches (3750X stackwiseplus) provide connectivity to the  Data centre, Internet, wireless blocks etc.

The access and distribution switch stacks(Cisco 3750-X) are set up with two or three member switches with uplinks multihomed to the primary and secondary core switch with each uplink included in EIGRP. In each of the stacks, one of the switches controls the operation of the stack, which will be  the stack master.As the Cisco Stackwise architecture is not SSO-capable but NSF aware, all Layer 3 fuctions must be re-established during a master switch outage. To minimize control plane impact and improve Layer3 convergence, uplinks should be diverse and originate from the member switches instead of the Master switches in the respective stack. This is as per Cisco recommended design solution.The above solution can be setup if there are more than two switches in the stack. i.e. uplinks are configured on the backup member switch modules.

1.But what about stack with two switches..Which switch should be set up as the Master for a two member stack with uplinks to the core primary and secondary from each switch(Master and Backup)

2. For Layer 3 routing, does the routing takes precedene over switch failures? Say for eg. In a two member stack, the master switch with uplink to primary fails, does EIGRP provide a fast convergence to route traffic via backup secondary and does not wait for the control plane on the switch stack to converge? All the access to core links will be set up for ECMP.
