Jun 19, 2012A multisite network is currently supporting muticast using PIM dense mode, which is enabled on router/switch LAN and WAN interfaces across all locations. I am about to introduce Nexus switches to the main LAN. How can I make dense and sparse mode coexist to ensure flow of muticast traffic between devices supporting and dense and sparse mode? Eventually, I want to transition to the sparse mode; however, it has to be done gradually, even within a single site. The leacy equipment includes Cat 3750 and 4500s.

10.170.10.10 is --> Next hop for the DSL router internal IP, and it's working fine.
We have a new internet connection with another ISP/ with another DSL router, how to connect both of them to exit from the Core Switch 6509.
is it ok if i make another default route to the Next hop to the new DSL router as:
SW6509-conf)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.80.10.10
10.80.10.10 is --> Next hop for the new DSL router internal IP.

What would cause this ? On the same switch a physical interface is already configured with IP PIM SPARSE-MODE.

Apr 21, 2012I have a very flat network. All of the gateways/SVI's exist on the same 6500. There are some vBrick IPTV servers that have a unicast address and 2-3 multicast addresses configured. After rebooting the 6500, the ip pim sparse-mode we had on all of our SVI's no longer work. I checked the old config and everything is the same as before I rebooted it. I troubleshot this for a while and found that the only way I can make this work now is if I enable ip sparse-dense on the SVI's. I believe this means that dense is the multicast method being used and I don't want to use dense mode because of all the flooding. How might I be able to make ip pim sparse-mode work again? I never had a static RP configured but I think I will need to. How do I decide on what ip address on the 6500 I should use as the RP? Should the ip address of the RP be a loopback address on the 6500 or should it be the SVI gateway ip of the vlan that the vBrick IPTV servers are on?

I would like to introduce a Cisco ASA 5520 firewall with AIp-SSM module so that all wirelees traffic can be inspected.
The issue is: Without changing any configuration in the network (switch & WLC) is it possible to introduce the firewall?

Jun 2, 2012we are using cisco 6509 series switches as core switches. and Cisco 4510,4507 series switches as edge switches. all the vlans are created at core switches and propogating to edge switches through VTP. we are using OSPF as routing protocol at core switch for internal routing. till now we are using 4510,4507 switches as layer 2 switches. Since, 4510 & 4507 switches are hign end swithces i want use them as layer 3 switches instead of layer 2.if i change these switches from layer 2 to layer 3 does it make any impact on our network or better to keep them as layer 2 switches.if i change these switches to layer 3 is there any advantage i will have.

Jun 8, 2012connecting a 5548 pair to our core 6509s. Just want to be sure we don't introduce any issues into the network.The 6509's are connected and perform all the routing. Essentially, we're moving away from a 3750 stack in the data center and the 5548s are the replacement. We'd want to limit the vlans to the specific server network vlans. Our current setup is a port channel between the 3750 and each of the 2 6509s for redundancy. I'd like to use the same functionality when we connect the 5548's but I'm looking for what the config should look like to ensure no spanning tree loops are introduced and that it is configured optimally.

Feb 24, 2013I think I have a good handle on PIM dense mode, but some of the output.I think Im actually just overthinking this but I want to validate. When I look at the output of a 'show ip mroute' what does the bolded line. [code] From what I understand, packets that arrive at the RPF interface are flooded through all other interfaces. But what does it mean when it says 'Prune' in that bolded line? Does that mean that the router is sending a prune out of that interface?

I'm currently looking at either 2 x 3750X stacks or 2 x 4500s with dual SUPs and PSUs, both options will provide the number of switchports required without the need for additonal access layer swiches. Which switch option is best to go for here? All of our services will be located in our data centre which will be connected using 2 1000Mbps MPLS circuits. I wont need any advanced L3 features and we are not likley to scale over 450 users. Also is it ok to use the dual switch stacks or chassis to provide the collapsed core/access layer or is it best to have a dedicated core (using one of the above options with less switchports) and having a dedicated accesss layer using 2960Gs for example. Our structured cabling terminates in a single comms room so we wont need to distribute switches throughout the office.

Sep 21, 2012I have a problem with extending the LAN on a client site . They are looking to extend the LAN with a 2960S-series switch. Already in place is a 4510 switch which the 2960 is connected to via fibre. The 2 switches are both set up but there is no connectivity as I cant ping between them or anything. The management VLAN on the 2960 shows line up, protocol down, which I believe means the VLAN is enabled but there is a form of physical mismtach on the ports. I have attached the configs of both switches. I feel it might be a problem with GBIC module compatibility. The SFP installed on both ends of the switch are GLC-SX-MMD. On the 4510, the SFP sits in a twingig converter (CVR-X2-SFP) but there is no light on it at all when the cables are plugged in.

All I need to achieve (and this seems inordinately hard, but it is entirely likely that I'm just being dense) is to get access to the internet through my core switch, through the firewall and out through my VSAT. I've spoken at some length with the firewall providers (Cyberoam) and they tell me all I need to do when I migrate onto my new system (Cyberoam is currently in place at the entrance to our existing LAN) is change the local IP address of the Firewall, plug in the new switch to the LAN port, and away I go. Tried that, didn't work, so obviously I'm missing something.

I have couple of thoughts, one method is to build the core and then replace the existing core, another option is to build the new switch as the second VTP server and once it recieves all the VTP information then disconnect the old server.
