Cisco Switching/Routing :: Local Switching Via ASR1002?

Jan 17, 2012

see the attached diagram to explain the network. I'm trying to do a "port-to-port" layer 2 connection on an ASR that will bi-directionally bridge a physical interface to a sub-interface. I tried using " connect VLAN200 Gig0/1/0 Gig0/0/3.200 interworking ethernet " but I'm not getting traffic through the connection.

I don't think BDI will work because it requires a Layer 3 point.  I have to make this Layer 2 switching.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: ASR1002 Interfacing To ONS-14454 Via Mm Fiber

Feb 7, 2012

I need to interface an ASR1002 to an ONS-14454 via multimode fiber The ASR1002 will use the 1000Base SFP-GE-S SFP module in one of the built-in Ethernet ports (in 1 of the four ports) The ONS-14454 will use 10/100/1000Base ONS-SI-GE-SX SFP in the Ethernet expansion blade.

Cisco docs indicate each module is supported in specific ASR and ONS but does not indicate interfacing between the two. If these two modules will communicate without error via multimode fiber?

I am working on getting my CCNP.  The first exam I plan to take is the switching test BCMSN 642-812. Using the 4th Edition Self-Study Guide from Froom, Subraniaman, and Frahim. In Ch-4 it talks about End-to-End VLANs and Local VLANs. I read that section 4 or 5 times and still did not understand the difference between them two.I know one spans across the entire network and the other is local.  What do they exactly mean by that?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Keep Traffic Local Between Two Sub-nets Using 3750-X

Nov 13, 2011

We have a remote office with a Cisco 3750-X switch with the IP-Services feature set connected via dark-fiber to a 6509-E at the corporate office. We plan on migrating the remote office to a new network (new acquisition) to subnet 10.10.10.0 on VLAN 20 which has an existing  subnet of 192.168.100.0 and we would like to run both in parallel using their existing switches (Dell) and the new 3750-X.

I’m curious as to the best way to keep the traffic local between the two subnets using the 3750-X and if necessary put the 192.168.100.0 network on a VLAN. I thought about routing between the two networks via IP routing on the 3750-X but the new workstations default gateway is the 6509-E and existing workstations is a SonicWALL within the remote office. The default gateway for the new workstations can be moved from the 6509-E as a last resort.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 - Local Subnet To Edge Router Two Networks

May 13, 2012

I need to make some changes on our network. We currently have two sites 150 miles apart we join both by way of fiber and on each side we have Cisco 3750 stack switches, configure trunking for all V lans on one port in site one then through the the long haul fiber to site two with site one using 10.1.1.30 and site two using 10.1.1.40 as their default gateway, with static routing all V lan sub nets to the other sites default gateway life is good.

My question - seeing how we have sites using the same sub net 10.1.1.x to trunk all data to each site through switches; we need to now change the network and add each site to the MPLS network, site one switch 1 IP address 10.1.1.30 going to MPLS router one with FA0/0/0 using IP 10.1.1.31, site two having switch 1 IP address 10.1.1.40 going to MPLS router one with FA0/0/0 using 10.1.1.41. I need to know will this work.

We have the same sub net in each site 10.1.1.x to the MPLS routers then the external router interface connecting each site to local switches, will this cause any problems by using the same local sub net for each site?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3550 - Export Mac Address From Switch To Local Machine?

Jan 8, 2013

I am working on Cisco 3550 switch on a certain requirement. I have got an access point connected to the switch and few mobile phones connected to the access point. I get the list of mac addresses connected to the switch ( Both access point's mac address & the clients addresses) by "show mac-address table dynamic" command. However, i am unable/confused to get the output of the following scenarios:

1. I would require to export the mac address from the switch to the local machine in any format (May be by using an SNMP tool, if available) so that the same needs to be used in my C# for development. What would be the way for the same ?

2. The mac address in the mac address table doesn't get updated dynamically. (Eg Scenario: A wifi client gets connected to an access point which inturn is connected to the switch, the mac address of the client shows up in the switch table. However if the client is disconnected, the client's mac address would still be displayed in the switch table )

Cisco WAN :: ATM To VLAN Local Switching On The 7206VXR?

Aug 1, 2012

We normally interconnect an ethernet VLAN via a bridge-group to an ATM PVC like :

interface ATM1/0.162055
bridge 10
pvc 16/2055
  encap aal5snap
!
interface port-channel1.10

[code]...

This works fine on our 7206VXR's (IOS 12.4(24)) but the limit on bridge-groups is 256 which is not scalable enough.Earlier i was reading on [URL] wp1170945 for L2 switching an ATM PVC to an Ethernet VLAN which interested me because of the simplicity of it. According to the manual, the corresponding config would be :

interface ATM1/0
pvc 16/2055 l2transport
encapsulation aal5snap
!
!

connect atm-eth-vlan-con atm1/0 16/2055 GigabitEthernet0/1.100 interworking ethernet

I've got the following questions :

- Can i terminate the ATM PVC to a port-channel or is it implicit when i configure gi0/1.100?

- Are there any limitations on the amount of connects on the 7200VXR with the IOS i'm using?

- Are there any other caveats i didn't think about?

Cisco Wireless :: Configuring H-REAP Local Switching On The WLAN?

Oct 11, 2011

I'm reading up on H-REAP in the Deploying and troubleshooting Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers book (Chapter 13) and I would like some clarification on the except below.:"Also notice that, as part of the WLAN configuration, no mention was made of choosing and interface for the WLAN. Unless you will have APs in local mode servicing a WLAN configured for local switching in conjunction with H-REAP APs, the controller interface is irrelevant because the controller will not bridge the client traffic on the network. The H-REAP performs that function.  Even if you will not be using any local mode APs, you must choose an interface to be associated with your WLAN.  In this case, you could use the management interface or create a quarantine VLAN interface, for example if you do not want client traffic to be bridged by the controller if the client traffic is no longer locally switched."Our corporate office has 2 5508 controllers and 150+ APs in local mode.  I'm preparing to deploy a couple of H-REAP APs to a remote site to test.  Is this saying you have to choose an interface when creating a WLAN, but if the WLAN will only be used by  H-REAP APs w/ local switching it does not matter which interface is used when creating the WLAN.  If there are APs in local mode using the same WLAN, the interface the WLAN associates with needs to be on the same subnet as the devices connecting the the WLAN?

Cisco WAN :: ASR1002 / 1002F Are Touted To Be Able To Handle Large Routing Tables

Jul 8, 2011

The ASR1002/1002F are touted to be able to handle large routing tables. They are also touted to have the software based IOS HA.What is not stated is that once IOS HA is turned on, the memory left in the router is so miserable that only 1 view of the internet GRT is pratically possible. My grumble is that this isn't documented anywhere and only more recently when the RP2 was launched has this been "corrected". But we have 7 units of ASR1002/1002F all not living up to their initially advertised functionality.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 4404 HREAP Local Switching And VLAN Allocation

Nov 23, 2009

I have a tale of woe for you who may be considering Hybrid REAP with local switching.

My client has a varied configuration, but the requirements basically screamed HREAP with local switching.  They have 15 sites, had already purchased a single WLC 4404 and they needed between 4 and 24 APs at each of the sites.  Each of these locations are connected by a WAN link of good quality, but only a single link so there is no assurance of availability; the client has local resources so it would be useful if wireless stayed working during an outage.

So I setup the WLC for HREAP local switching.  I setup AP Groups VLANs, but I noticed it had no effect on the VLAN allocation for HREAP.  This was unfortunate, because not every site has the same VLAN configuration - some sites had a L3 switch and others only a L2 switch.  But I suffered through this and configured each AP manually with the appropriate VLAN mappings.

The infuriating thing, is now that they have bought a second WLC 4404 (they expect to increase the number of APs beyond 100) all these VLAN mappings are messed up when APs connect to the second WLC.  I've been going through them one by one again - it is really unfortunate that the AP Groups VLAN mappings don't apply to HREAP local switching.

I'm going to get back to the next 80 APs - but if some of you have a system for handling the VLAN mappings of a large number of APs.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 / 4900 - Network Down Cause Switching Supervisor With Redundancy

Jan 11, 2012

we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7609 For Switching / Based On LAN (VRRP / HSRP) Feature

Oct 18, 2011

I am facing an isssues with 7609 for LAN switching , based on  LAN (VRRP/HSRP) feature.Actually  we are having ES+ cards (on 7609) and we are using multiple groups(say  350 vrrp groups) running on the router . the routers are connected as router 1>>> mux(which is working as switches)>>> router2

my questing are

1.  does their will be "multicast packets" (for VRRP/HSRP group) "from backup  router to Master router", when in stable state( ie when Master and  backup are already chosen) , or the packet from backup to master should  be unicast.I know for sure, the packet from master to back is multicast packets denstination to Multicast IP packet and To MAC address.I am not sure but I think from backup to master it should be multicast

2. what is frequency of these packets( from backup to master)

3.  As i have multiper group on a single interface ( we are using q-in-q),  when the connectivity from router's is broken, then does all the groups  will muticast their active roll in the lan sengment "at once" or it will  be in a groups say 100 groups at once, and after few ms few 100's and  sone ( as is on OSPF or RIP)

we are in between troubleshooting I hope we get the ans( Actul problem we are seeing in the router's that we have 2 ports on active routers and 2 ports on standby router , but we are not seeing muticast on 1 port on standby router where as all other 3 ports are seeing multicast packets) [code]
