Cisco Switching/Routing :: WLC 5500 Controller And Client Connectivity

Nov 20, 2012

Having an issue with my WLC 5500 and client connectivity. This just started today. Clients will connect for a short period of time and then drop off. WLC appears fine with the exception of a bunch of trap errors. I've rebooted the WLC but this did not clear the issue.

Cisco Wireless :: Client Type In 5500 Series WLAN Controller

The Release Notes for 7.0.116.0 of WLC 5500 has a table which title is "Client Type", and it shows wireless adapters. My question is,
what kind of customer means? Wireless clients or clients for an specific application? If it was the first option, does it mean tha just this adapters could connect to my wireless network?

Cisco Wireless :: 5500 / Controller Versus Cloud-based (Controller)

Mar 31, 2013

We are trying to navigate the waters in choosing between a in-house, controller-based, wireless network solution or a cloud-based solution. We have been presented with the usual suspects in cloud-based (Aerohive, Meracki, etc) and with Cisco (5500) and Aruba on the other side. We are a multi-campus organization with approx. 200 APs.Any hard reasons why go with a controller-based vs. cloud-based solution? If we must keep the conversation limited to Cisco, why go Meracki over Cisco's WLC solutions or vise versa?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2125 Wireless Controller Without Anchor Controller Just Using Existing Hardware

Dec 6, 2012

I am looking to configure a wired and wireless guest network. I have industrial barcode scanners that connect to one SSID and then there is the business network on the office SSID (no vlan seperation for these devices just different SSIDs). There is not really a need to seperate the business network from the scanners in any case. However, there are needs for a guest network and this needs to be seperated. At the bare minumum I would like to have the wireless guest network. Here is what I have: 2125 Wireless LAN controller managing 18 LAPs (1 indoor and 17 outdoors)Cisco Cat 2950 switches (2 x 24 port and soon to be replaced with 2 x 48 port 2960's with 802.1x capability) Sonicwall TZ210 firewallOne existing wired and trunked vlan for PLC infrastructure. One ESXi hosting Windows server guests (soon to be 2 with vMotion) The reason for the wired guest access network is tp prevent anyone from plugging into the wall jack in the office with thier home laptops or anyone else from being on the same subnet as our domain machines. Granted they would be unathenticaed but there would be no layer 2 seperation and that is what I think would be best.

How would I go about doing this on the wireless controller without an anchor controller just using my existing hardware? I would like to have the Guest SSID only availible in the front office. Is it possible to offer a guest network while still servicing the business network SSID on the same access point? Then might I be able to have the guest network be treated as it should at the controller? However this might present another issue altogether as the guest traffic will be over the same wire as the business SSID until it hits the controller for management.

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5500 / VPN Connection Looses Connectivity Even When Not Idle?

Mar 3, 2011

I recently started having trouble with my VPN clients loosing connection.I can create the conenction, work with it for a while, and then loose connectivity.Timing seems to be dependent on the activity over the connection.More activity, the conenction stops working sooner.

The cleint doesn't disconnect, I just can't access anything from the client.Disconnecting and reconnecting the client fixes the problem, temporarily depending on how much data I'm transferring.This works 90% of the time.The other 10% if I wait 30-45 minutes, and try again.. It works...with the same results...

It was originally isolated to a Win 2003 server that I was using as the client.It is now happening on my Win XP client as well.I'm using the AnyConnect client ver. 2.5.2014 with the VPN service on the UC520.Which I beleive, is similar to the ASA 5500 series VPN device.I am running ver 8.1.0 on the UC 520, and I can't remember if this started after upgrading to the new software.

Cisco Wireless :: 802.11a Mesh Outdoors With 5500 Controller

May 27, 2012

I am working on a project that will involve 5500 controllers managing 1260 series N rate A/Ps. There may be a requirement for MESH but my previous experience using Motorola 802.11a radios is that random, intermittent radio detections resulted in the MESH network having to keep re-forming resulting in less than 100% availability.

What's peoples experience in the UK is 802.11a outdoors?

Ideally i would prefer to use 2.4GHz and repeater access points for those areas not serviced with data connection but I cant find any info' so far on how whether the 5500 controller is able to manage repeater access points.

Cisco VPN :: VPN Client Traffic Through ASA 5500?

Feb 10, 2011

I have been trying to conect a Cisco VPN client through an ASA and it makes the connection but doesn't allow any traffic through. The ASA does have a site to site VPN attached to the outside interface.I suppose the first question is it possible to allow VPN client to connect through an ASA 5500 from the inside network when there are Site to Site VPN's already attached to the outside interfaces?If possible then what have I missed. I have tried adding NAT exempt for the traffic between the internal networks and "an IPSEC pass thru Inspect Map".

Cisco :: Deploying 4400 Controller As An Anchor For 5500 Controllers?

Jun 7, 2011

in one of the sites, the client has an exisiting 4402 controller which he moved to the DMZ in order to set it as an anchor & he purchased two new 5508 controllers to control the corporate APs.  I configured all the parameters needed for the guest anchoring & then I tested the connection but there was an issue. (all the controllers are running the same firmware version)after testing the setup, the guest users could get an IP from the internal DHCP of the anchor controller (in DMZ), but then they cannot reach the internet or anything outside the anchor controller.Cisco confirmed that the 4400 is fully compatible with the 5500 to work in an anchor-foreign secnario as long as they are running the same firmware version. yet, when I temporarily used one of the 5500 controller in the DMZ as an anchor & I applied the exact same configurations on it as the 4400, it worked perfectly without any issues.

note:  on the anchor controller (4400), the management & AP-manager interfaces reside on the same subnet & the wireless guest SSID is also mapped to the management interface.  (may be this setup is causing the issue) but on the 5500 it is working just fine?

Cisco Wireless :: 5500 / Dhcp Proxy Option In Controller?

Jul 2, 2012

While configuring a 5500 wireless controller, i came across this option of DHCP proxy under Advanced tab of Controller Option.It asks for the dhcp option 82 remote id format & the dhcp timeout.

1. What is the significance of this & when do we use it?

2. Also, under each wlan ssid that we create, there is an option of dhcp address required under the advanced tab. Do we need to use this option, if we are defining a normal dhcp pool in our controller for that ssid.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Recommended NX-OS For Nexus 5500

Mar 17, 2012

Is there an official Cisco-Page with the always-up-to-date recommended NX-OS-Releases for the Nexus 5000, just as there is URL

If there is no such page: What Release can be recommended?

We got new N596 & N2232 this week, and are using L2-LAN only, no L3,no FCoE- or FC-Ports. The command 'vPC orphan-ports suspend' is the newest feature used, so 5.0(3)N2(1) would be the oldest possible release.

Before I install 5.1(3)N1(1a) and then have to do a distruptive downgrade to 5.0(3)N2(2b), I'd like to be assured that the new one is already recommended as mature enough.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 5k / 5500 And 802.1AE - Layer 2 Crypto

May 4, 2011

There is very little and quite diverse Information regarding the if, where and how of a Nexus 5000 or 5500 series Switch and support for IEEE 802.1AE Link Layer Encryption (also called MACsec).

For example: the official FAQ denies that the Nexus 5500-series supports 802.1AE at all, while the data sheet says that only "downlink ports" are supported (host access).

On the Nexus 7000 platform the 802.1AE link layer encryption is part of TrustSec (feature cts) and much better documented.

The Question is: If and under which circumstances (configuration, L3 modules, license, NX/OS version) does a Nexus 5k or 5500 series Switch support 802.1AE on 1G or 10G interfaces that are directly connected to a Nexus 7000 (with the necessary cts feature licensed/configured)?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5548 - Possible To Have More Than Two 5500 Switches Peered In VPC

May 7, 2013

We have successfully peered two 5548UP switches together and separately we have successfully peered two 5596UP switches together. Works great and is our standard going forward for data center switching. I've been casting about Google and Cisco looking for an answer to this question:

Is it possible to have more than two 5500 class Nexus switches participate in a peered vPC configuration? For instance, can I connect a single FEX to four 5500 class switches in a vPC configuration? The question is more academic than actionable. Even if the answer is yes we probably wouldn't be in a position to implement something like this for a while.

Cisco :: DMZ Connectivity To Domain Controller / AD

Feb 16, 2012

We relocated several servers to our DMZ and, without a domain controller in the DMZ (we plan to put a RODC in the DMZ later when we mvoe to Windows Server 2008), i punch through the standard recommended TCP ports. ports 88,135, 389, 53, etc.) to the internal network located DC. I am double hopping to the DC (I hope thast doesn't matter) as the DMZ located web server communicates to another IP address in the same DMZ network and then I NAT that address to the internal IP address of the DC. Everything seems to be working for the servers we moved to the DMZ but i think i don't have all the necessary TCP/UDP ports punched through because we have found that logging into the DMZ servers is taking an extended amount of time, sitting on the “applying settings” screen. For 2-34 minutes. Also, we noticed that our applciations fols have to now add the fully qualified domain names when making calls to servers that just needed the domain name. When i open the access-list up completely without opening specific TCP/UDP ports, the issue is resolved.
