Cisco Wireless :: Client Type In 5500 Series WLAN Controller
Jul 5, 2011
The Release Notes for 7.0.116.0 of WLC 5500 has a table which title is "Client Type", and it shows wireless adapters. My question is,
what kind of customer means? Wireless clients or clients for an specific application? If it was the first option, does it mean tha just this adapters could connect to my wireless network?

I have a customer whom has six LAP1131AG-K9 but no controller and they are interested in one of the new 2500 series, specifically a AIR-CT2504-5-K9 with a 5 AP add-on license to bring total AP capacity to 10. I can't determine clearly if this controller will work for these older AP's prior to them making the jump to 802.11n via the 3500 or 3600 series, looking to the community to confirm.

I recently upgraded our controllers to the latest version 7 software, as I read this was one of the requirements to get them to connect. But I am not having any luck getting into a controller. Normally I plug them in to the network, they pop into the controller listed as something like AP5057.a844.xxxx and then I can finish configuring them, but a static IP on them, etc. This is the first of this model AP I have tried to deploy, so I am wondering what is different with these. or what I might be missing in the default config in the WLAN controllers. Niether of which are set to "Master" either.

Having an issue with my WLC 5500 and client connectivity. This just started today. Clients will connect for a short period of time and then drop off. WLC appears fine with the exception of a bunch of trap errors. I've rebooted the WLC but this did not clear the issue.

We are trying to navigate the waters in choosing between a in-house, controller-based, wireless network solution or a cloud-based solution. We have been presented with the usual suspects in cloud-based (Aerohive, Meracki, etc) and with Cisco (5500) and Aruba on the other side. We are a multi-campus organization with approx. 200 APs.Any hard reasons why go with a controller-based vs. cloud-based solution? If we must keep the conversation limited to Cisco, why go Meracki over Cisco's WLC solutions or vise versa?

I have 2 WLAN controllers, a 4400 series and 5500 series controller. The 4400 series has 100 seat limit on it, with 74 Access Points currently connected. The 5500 series has a 250 max, but we bought it with only 50 licenses, and it is max'd out at 50.The 5500 controller is the controller that has a DNS entry so that the Access Points will know to find that controller as they're being added. BUT, because we've reached our limit of 50 licenses, I'd like to be able to set the 4400 series controller to be the controller that new Access Points try to connect to. By going back to the 4400 as the controller that new Access Points connect to buys me time to plan for more licenses on next years budget for the 5500 controller.

We have a CISCO WLAN in place with several SSIDs including one on the Voice VLAN. We need to add an additional one using CCKM due to wireless phone roaming issues. Does adding a new SSID to the WLAN cause any outage whatsoever? We are in an environment where even a small amount down time is not acceptable.
We are using two 5500 controllers with hundreds of LAP1142N

Got a bit of a quandary with joining new access points to our 5500 series W LAN Controller. It looks like the LAP is initially able to see the W LAN controller, but after that things go sideways. The LAP is pulling a valid IP address from DHCP, and the W LAN Controller is able to ping it.
In the controller's AP Join Statistics we get this:
Last AP Message Decryption Failure
Last AP Connection Failure -Timed out while waiting for ECHO repsonse from the AP
Last AP Disconnect Reason

We are using the CISCO-DOT11-ASSOCIATION-MIB in a Cisco Air AP 1140 device with release 12/4(21a)JA1 to find out the radio type of wireless client (B/G or N). The clients in question are of type Wireless N and Wireless B/G. We are querying cDot11ClientDevType and cDot11ClientRadioType but the relation between the returned values and client/radio type is not clear:
2 devices returned: cDot11ClientDevType = 102 ==> pc4500Client(102) - client with a 4500 radio and ClientRadioType=2==> ccxClient(2) - CCX- compatible radio1 device returned: cDot11ClientDevType = 1==> unknown (1) – unknown and ClientRadioType= 1==> unknown(1)
Questions: On a Cisco Air AP 1140 device
What OID needs to be polled to find if the client's radio type? What value is returned by this OID if the radio type is B/G?What value is returned by this OID if the radio type is N?

Now I will have to move the WCS-server to another subnet and change the IP, but it will keep the name. Will that effect the connection between the controllers and the WCS?Do I have the change anything in the configuration on the controllers or the WCS-server?

I am working on a project that will involve 5500 controllers managing 1260 series N rate A/Ps. There may be a requirement for MESH but my previous experience using Motorola 802.11a radios is that random, intermittent radio detections resulted in the MESH network having to keep re-forming resulting in less than 100% availability.
What's peoples experience in the UK is 802.11a outdoors?
Ideally i would prefer to use 2.4GHz and repeater access points for those areas not serviced with data connection but I cant find any info' so far on how whether the 5500 controller is able to manage repeater access points.

While configuring a 5500 wireless controller, i came across this option of DHCP proxy under Advanced tab of Controller Option. It asks for the dhcp option 82 remote id format & the dhcp timeout.
1. What is the significance of this & when do we use it?
2. Also, under each wlan ssid that we create, there is an option of dhcp address required under the advanced tab. Do we need to use this option, if we are defining a normal dhcp pool in our controller for that ssid.

I've got a client who purchased numerous 3600 series AP's (3602i to be exact) and would like to add them into their WLAN 4404 controller. They're currently on 5.x system code so I plan on getting them upgraded to the latest 7 code.
They currently have a number of AP's adding and working fine. Once the WLAN controller is upgraded, does anything specific need to be done within the WLAN gui to add in these new 3600 series AP's?

Our company has 8 4404-100 Cisco wireless controllers and each WLC has 8 W LANs configured. They are all working fine. However, the WLAN ID sequence is not consistent. I'm wondering if it's possible to change the WLAN ID on these WLCs without (or slightly) impacting the users. I don't want to re-configure all the WLAN profiles.

We’ve recently installed a 5508 w LAN controller for my organization wireless network and each time devices connect to this wireless network they receive an ip conflict error. All devices conflict with the ip address of IP address 0.0.0.0 with mac address 00-00-00-00-00-00.
All devices event viewer has this TCP error: “The system detected an address conflict for IP address 0.0.0.0 with the system having network hardware address 00-00-00-00-00-00. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result.” We previously experienced the same ip conflict with 12000 w LAN network that he had used as proof of concept.

what seems to be a common issue/query regarding getting AppleTV to work via the Wireless Lan Controller. We are running WCS 7.0.172.0, our WISM controllers are on software version 7.0.116.0 and our APs are a mixture of 1140 and 1142s with both 11a/n and 11b/g enabled.
What we are finding is that we are able to stream to the AppleTV box when connected to the LAN and both devices are on the same subnet.however, as soon as we go onto the WLAN ( both devices on the same subnet ) , the end device can no longer see the AppleTV box to stream too.

Will they try and join the new controllers for any reason automatically? Is there a better way, or a best practice to provision these new controllers?

Just bought two new LAP1041N APs to add to a dead spot on our campus. Well when trying to set them up the will not stay connected to the WLAN Controller (model 4402). The new APs boot fine, and will even appear in the controller for brief moments, but after a few seconds they dissapear and start showing the discovery status light pattern (green, red, amber). Just wondering if I am doing something wrong with these APs, or what the issue could possible be.We have 10 other APs that as soon as we connected to network were detected by controller and we configured from there. Most of those are 1010 or 1020s, we have a few 1131s and 1100s.
