Cisco Switching/Routing :: WS-C2950S 23 Hours Of Icmp Ping Unreachable On Switch?
Mar 7, 2012
Today one of our 9 Cisco switches a "WS-C2950S" (we also got 2 other WS-C2950S on same network) stop responding icmp ping packages. When i tried to telnet the switch its network was unreachable but i was able to see its existance from other switches by "sh cdp neig". So i decided to fix the situation on a suitable night time work, checking by console cable or even rebooting the device.
Then i started to wonder... what this could possibly be about? We have like 40 clients behind that switch and there was no communication problem during the problem.

While working at a client site today, I was troubleshooting some ICMP connectivity for a network we have created.I turned on 'debug ip icmp" on the 3550 switch int he middle, and was inundated with the following debug output:
Jan 25 11:01:14.641: ICMP: dst (172.16.1.7) port unreachable rcv from 172.16.1.5
Jan 25 11:01:14.641: ICMP: dst (172.16.1.7) port unreachable rcv from 172.16.1.5
Jan 25 11:01:14.641: ICMP: dst (172.16.1.7) port unreachable rcv from 172.16.1.5
Jan 25 11:01:14.641: ICMP: dst (172.16.1.7) port unreachable rcv from 172.16.1.5
[code]....
This output fires several times a second, and based on how often it is firing, I am curious if it may be a culprit with respect to the fact that the client has indicated that they have some slow internet.Should the next step be to look at the workstation at 172.16.1.5?

I have four-switch Cat 3750 stack that has been working reliably for a couple years. Suddenly the other morning it reboots itself, and has been doing so every 24 hours since. take a look at the attached log? This should really be a Smartnet thing, but as it turns out the warranty we have on this is not Smartnet .

Is it really the case that the ASA will not generate ICMP Host Unreachable messages for sub nets connected to any of its interfaces (in breach of RFC1812) as claimed here: [URL]
I'm investigating a situation where an organization uses ASAs to control traffic between different v lans in their internal production systems as well as Internet traffic. They are having problems with internal load balancing because the ASAs do not (as currently configured) generate Host Unreachable packets. Can this be changed in the configuration or not? I have to say, if it can't then I'd urge them to find something else to route between their internal sub nets.

I had setup a lan infrastructure with 5 3750 stack swithes. In these 3 of them are in one stack which is acting as access switch, 2 of them in another stack which is as core switch where all the SVI is configured. Now, when i tried to ping from our edge pc which is connected in access switch to default gaeway, which is configured in core switch, the ICMP is getting delayed . But when try to ping from the same edge pc to another user PC, it is getting less tahn 1 millisecond icmp replies.
why icmp is delaying to default gateway , but working with another edge to edge pcs without any delays?

I am having some issues with my ASA 5510 (running ASA 8.2) dropping ICMP unreachable-fragmentation-required-but-df-bit-set type messages coming in on the outside interface. I have the following entry in the ACL for the outside interface:access-list outside_acl extended permit icmp any interface outside and there are no other entries in that list that should take precedence and drop the packet. Pings from outside to the ASA work when this ACE is present and do no when it is absent so it is clearly taking effect. I see the following entries in the debug log when sending a large non-fragmentable packet (that would cause an intermediate router to send back this ICMP response) out to the internet through the ASa,As far as I can tell I am not running ICMP inspection; I don't want it to do any stateful magic here since the outgoing traffic would have been ordinary data from another protocol and would not have caused an outgoing ICMP connection to be built to match against.

I have a Cisco 2960-S Switch, It is connected to a jack in the building to check the settings, Interface VLAN 1 has an ip, there is a default gateway, Any host connected to switch can access the network resources. But the problem is that I have to use Serial Cable to configure it. I cant ping or telnet into it from any other device. PC's are on different subnets/VLANS.
Basically this switch is connected to a port in a different switch, Do i have to make a trunk?

i have a device connected to 2960 switch. It is an access port and i could ping the device from other switches , also from outside the lan. But i am not able to ping the device from 2960 switch alone. I suspected and checked the arp table and it was showing as incomplete. I created the manual arp entry and tried pinging but no luck.

I'm having some trouble getting my head round the following but I think it's routing related?
I have a Cisco 3750 switch with the following configured:
interface Vlan1
ip address 192.168.0.223 255.255.254.0
no ip route-cache
[Code].....
The 3750 is connected to a firewall which handles the routing. From the 3750 I can only ping remote networks from the vlan1 interface not from vlan6,8 or 10 i.e ping 10.34.37.101 (remote network) source 192.168.0.223 (vlan1) works but ping 10.34.37.101 source 10.74.10.1 (vlan10) does not? I can ping 10.34.37.101 from computers on the various vlans but not from the 3750 it self.
I looked at setting a default gateway for the various vlan interfaces

I have enable system mtu jumbo on switch to 9000 and on ASR router interface mtu is set to 9114. At switch side switch interface is configured as a trunk port and one vlan has been passed on that interface. I am not able to ping the ip 172.16.10.2 with 9000 mtu size.

We got a switch issue here for 4507R-E with two sup6l-e supervisor running sso redudant. and we found that sometimes client can't ping through the local vlan ip add on the switch , can't logon the cli by telnet too. In the direct connected network device such as access switch and ASA , can't ping or telnet the 4507R too. when we made a forceswitch to sso standby supervisor from console , the problem solve and everything get fine . after that, we switch angin back to the origin supervisor , fine too.
before we made the supervisor forceswitch , we had check the system cpu usage is 15 - 20 % from console . also we had creat a new vlan 200, attach the notebook to 4507's vlan 200 port , the notebook can't ping or telnet the vlan 200 ip interface too.

I have a strange behavior and a simple proble . I configured the following static route
ip route 10.84.22.0 255.255.254.0 10.84.23.254
That I advertsied in eBGP :
router bgp 65000
network 10.84.22.0 mask 255.255.254.0
the IP next hop 10.84.23.254 is cascaded on my customer LAN . At nominal time the router advertsed the route in BGP
pjnb1376#sh ip bgp nei 57.213.169.169 ad
Next Hop Metric LocPrf Weight Path
*> 10.84.22.0/23 10.84.23.254 0 32768 i
When the lan interface of the router goes down , the router still advertise the route !!! Even if the IP next hop
10.84.23.254 is not reacheable anymore ....
The box is a Cisco 1941 using
1900-universalk9-mz.SPA.151-4.M1

The problem is that that the routers are not reachable form the corporate LAN after some time. Pinging the routers IP is not working anymore. When the network cable is unplugged and plugged in again the routers are responding again. The same applies when I connect my Laptop to the router. The interface is responsive right after I connect the cable. Also other devices on the network can ping the router. But after a few hours or sometimes 1,5 day the router is unreachable form the corporate network.
The problem first started a few weeks ago. The configuration did not change. The router 878 was not responsing and after changing all the cables and conncting it to another swith the problem remained. So I suspected a hardware failure and bought a replacement 888. After configuring the 888 it showed the same behaviour as the 878 router. The DSL connection is working all the time. I can even set up a vpn connection to the router and start a telnet session. than I can ping the internap IP of the router but pinging another device is not working.
What I noticed after the command sh int vlan1 is that the last input counter keeps increasing.whats causing this or how to debug?

My company has a Cisco IAD 2400 which is handling our phones and the internet (from Service Provider). We are adding a second router, a Cisco 1921, to our network,I think I have everything set up correctly. One department is using the 192.168.2.0/27 subnet. I can ping each computer within that subnet. Also, within this subnet, I can ping the router interface at 192.168.2.1. I can ping 192.168.1.2 successfully as well. This is the interface on the 1921 that goes to the 2400. However, if I try to ping 192.168.1.1 (interface on 2400), I get "Reply From 192.168.1.236: Destination Host Unreachable" I get the same thing if I ping 8.8.8.8.Within the 1921, I can ping 192.168.1.1 and 74.125.224.72 (random google ip) successfully.

I would like to passthrough ICMP 8 (ping) requests through the DIR-655 to my server. I found where to allow the router to respond to ICMP 8 requests, however, I do not want the router to responder, rather the server itself. Is there a way to pass these requests through to the server?

We have some ME3800MX router/switches running ME380x-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(52)EY2. The Cisco website says:
The switch does not support these Cisco IOS router ACL-related features: # •Non-IP protocol ACLs (see Table 26-1) or bridge-group ACLs
how we would match ICMP traffic then?

Is it possible to use protocol binding to route pings only over the WAN1 connection, even if WAN1 fails? It seems like the protocol binding feature of the Linksys RV042 is ignored once WAN1 fails. I would like to use a ping from the LAN to an external IP to verify if the WAN1 connection is down, or is up and then use that information to power up, or power down a secondary communications system (WAN2). However, if the protocol binding is ignored when WAN1 fails, then I will not be able to use the ping to establish the state of WAN1 connection. Addtionally, is it possible to use protocol binding to only route pings and allow all other traffic to use either WAN connection? I have seen these feautures on a different brand of router that failsover to a cell connection, but it is not a true dual WAN router. It would be nice if the RV042 would allow this kind of control. Are there any other dual WAN routers out there that have this kind of protocol binding feature?

Both regular IP traffic and ICMP traffic are passing through the source port. C6509 provides the option of filtering vlan traffic during monitoring. But I don't have vlan traffic.
qa-c6509-c(config)#monitor session 1 filter ? vlan SPAN filter VLAN
So I applied an access-list which only allows icmp traffic to be sent out of the monitoring port. But it does not work.
