Cisco Switching / Routing :: Increasing Number Of Overrun In 6509?
Aug 12, 2012
I found increasing number of overrun in the tengigabit interface. The hardware is 6509 with sup720-3B and the overrun output is shown in WS-X6716-10GE module. The connected device to WS-X6716-10GE is EMC Islion S200. I think the capability of WS-X6716-10GE can handle EMC NAS device and the load is not so busy. So I have no idea of handling this and the reason why this overrun packet is shown.

We have the need to create a large number of VLANs on one of our networks. We're talking about 60! These will all terminate on a pair of 6509-E switches (building core). We use MSTP as a standard on our network so I'm going to stick with that so that we can dramatically reduce the number of STP instances needed. However, regarding the SVIs (default gateways) is there any reason why creating 60 of these guys would be considerd a big no-no? Or would you expect the 6509s to deal with them like a boss?

I have a 6509-E chassis that was prevoius in a VSS configuration. Due to some VSL failures I had to cobvert it to a standalone chassis but would like to bring it back to a virtual system.
Whenever I try to convert it by using the command "switch convert mode virtual" I get the msg %Please configure local switch number first". After doing so by entering the CLI cmd "switch set switch_num 1 local" I still get the same message.

I am seeing packets being ignored on GigabitEthernet0/0, but can't find any reason what the reason can be for that. So far calculated that about 3% of the traffic is being ignored. If it was caused by shortage of input buffers, I would expect to see increasing counters somewhere at no_buffer, but that is not the case. The average txload and rxload on the router is low all times.

A small network and uses the Linksys Router BEFSR81 as dhcp.the default Number of addresses is 50 and starts 10.0.0.100 to 10.0.0.149.A new Cisco IP Phone just introduced requires ip addresses and have noticed running out of addreses. Can I increase the number to 120 so that the address range would start from 10.0.0.100 to 10.0.0.219, also, I have a VPN device which automatically configures itself for 10.0.0.199 address and this is /24 network configuration.

We have IP device on the farm switch(cat6500, which is an access layer siwtch), with the gateway on the core switches (Nexus7000), on the core when I do show ip arp, I found the mac.But when I do sh mac add add of that mac there is no port attached to that mac.
Since that particular vlan only resides on the cat 6500 and two cores, so I logged in to the 6500, and when I show mac- in that vlan, I didn’t find that mac addresss. Instead, I found another mac address with last 8bit are the same of that mac.
Is it some kind VIP of the mac? How so, if no port, how can the switch forward the frame? [code]

Is there a maximum number of licenses for connections to a 877?The reason I ask is that our routers are managed by a datacentre and when I asked for the login details I was told that I couldnt have them due to licensing reasons with no other explanation.

Although I am quite used to using the WLC 4402 and the attached APs, I have no knowledge about licensing and I'm wondering if it has a limited number of AP's that can be controlled by the WLC? I'm not planning on adding 1000's but at the moment we have 21 and will probably be adding an additional 30 in the near future.

we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

The have around 80 staff and I think the current infrastructure is overkill for the size of the company. The current kit is old and they have no GB ethernet ports. They currently have:-
Core Switch:
1x Cisco c6509with a 48 port fast ethernet module (WS-X6248-RJ-45)
and an 8 port fibre module (WS-X6408A-GBIC)
I'm looking to replace this with something with 72 ethernet ports and 8 fibre ports
Access Switches:
2x 3500Replacement needs at least 48 ports and 2 fibre modules each
and 2x 5500Replacement needs at least 72 ports and 2 fibre modules each.

Clarifying whats the correct # of port asic in WS-X6704-LC?According to the following link (Catalyst 6500 Architectural white paper): [URL]
"In the WS-X6704-10GE line card, there are two port ASICs each supporting 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports"
While in the document: Understanding Quality of Service on the Catalyst 6500 Switch: [URL]
Table 10.
WS-X6704
Number of 10 GE Ports 4
- QoS on 10-Gigabit Ethernet Line Cards (WS-X6704-10GE)
So whats correct? 4 port asic or 2 port asic?

If client gateway = 192.168.64.9 then next-hop = 192.168.64.8 else use default-route 0.0.0.0
I know it's possible to do a route-map match ip-address ACL list. But is it possible to match on gateway?
Some info about hardware and config:
6509-E in VSS (IOS 12.2(17r)SX5) withVS-S720-10G supervisor.
All routes are static, IP for 192.168.64.9 is on SVI vlan.

My goal is route all traffice going to the Internet from subnet 10.133.3.0/24 to FW1 and all other subnets across the organization to FW2. I am not sure if I need to use ACL / Static route combo, or just a static routes or ACLS?

I would like to ask you if it's possibile to block routing between some Vlan for just once of them.
Maybe I can explain better:
I've got a Cisco 6509 with 4 configured vlan interfaces
Int Vlan 10 10.10.1.0/24
Int Vlan 20 10.10.2.0/24
Int Vlan 30 10.10.3.0/24
Int Vlan 40 10.10.4.0/24
Vlan "10" is the phone voip Vlan and it must not talk with the others Vlan. The others Vlan can comunicate normally except with Vlan "10".
Pratically Vlan "10" needs to be isolated from the others.
This equirement comes becouse Vlan 10 is wireless and has the WEP key encryption (very weak protocol). Some Phone couldn't support the WPA2 key and I need to avoid an unauthorized external client, cracking the WEP key and connecting to this WiFi, could have free access to the others Vlan.
