Cisco Switching/Routing :: Max Number Of VLANs On A 6509-E?

We have the need to create a large number of VLANs on one of our networks. We're talking about 60! These will all terminate on a pair of 6509-E switches (building core). We use MSTP as a standard on our network so I'm going to stick with that so that we can dramatically reduce the number of STP instances needed. However, regarding the SVIs (default gateways) is there any reason why creating 60 of these guys would be considerd a big no-no? Or would you expect the 6509s to deal with them like a boss?

I have a 6509-E chassis that was prevoius in a VSS configuration. Due to some VSL failures I had to cobvert it to a standalone chassis but would like to bring it back to a virtual system.
Whenever I try to convert it by using the command "switch convert mode virtual" I get the msg %Please configure local switch number first". After doing so by entering the CLI cmd "switch set switch_num 1 local" I still get the same message.

I found increasing number of overrun in the tengigabit interface. The hardware is 6509 with sup720-3B and the overrun output is shown in WS-X6716-10GE module. The connected device to WS-X6716-10GE is EMC Islion S200. I think the capability of WS-X6716-10GE can handle EMC NAS device and the load is not so busy. So I have no idea of handling this and the reason why this overrun packet is shown.

Configuring FWSM in a 6509. When I set "firewall vlan-group 40 40-42,251", it results in: "No more than one svi is allowed. Command rejected.".
I had "firewall multiple-vlan-interfaces" set for a previous use of this module, but took that off with the "no" command. Suspect that is the issue, but do not see how to resolve. Seems similar to bug CSCsr48563, but I am at the fixed code for that bug.

We have a network of 30 VLANS and currently all the vlans have access to everything. We are using Cisco 6509 switch for Layer3 routing.I would like to prevent some VLANs accessing the server VLANs. How can i resrict access to the server VLANs? Do i need to implement access-lists on the 6500 switch? or do i need to create VLANS on the firewall so that all traffic i filtered?

Is it possible to have multiple dhcp pools for multiple VLANs? The switch is a 6509 and/or 4506 catalyst. I don't want to use server-based products.

x3 48 ports
x1 NAM
x2 Sup720
Running 12.2(18)SXF3
I am keeping the four Sup720 modules and have purchased new versions of the others blades including two new 6509-E chassis?Can I take my stand-by Sup720 out of the production machine and insert it into the new chassis?

I have a Cisco 3750 switch stack and am performing QOS against a number of SVI vlans on per customer basis. I have 8 customers, each with a /29 public subnet and each with an SVI as a gateway within that /29 range. I then have a "routable" SVI vlan for routing upstream to the internet. [code]
The service policy attached to the interfaces above is supposed to perform policing on download and upload traffic. The service policy is attached to the Routable VLAN for download policing and the Customer VLAN for upload policing. For example, traffic entering the routable VLAN will be policed based on traffic matching an access list to the customers IP range (download). Traffic entering the customer VLAN will be policed based on traffic matching an access list from the customers IP range (upload).The command I am using to police is as follows - police 10485500 966080 exceed-action drop.The problem I am experiencing is traffic into the routable VLAN is being successfully policed down to the 10Mbps i have specified on a per customer basis (download).Traffic entering the customer VLAN is NOT being policed at all (upload).I am limited as to the use of the parent policy map I have specified on the interface, as I can only assign it in one direction (input).

Our organization currently has a Cisco 4507 acting as our core switch and 2 ASA525 firewalls.

we have a cat6509 with FWSM. We pass to the FWSM several VLANs. AllL3 is assigned to the FWs.In the Cat6500 log we have received this message %SVCLC-5-FWTRUNK: Firewalled VLANs configured on trunks ,when we configure 2 vlans in a trunk to an ESX server (these 2 VLANs are alreadyassigned to the FWSM).Idea is to share an interface to a ESX server with several VLANs, some of them are assigned also to FWSM.

upgrading our small office network. We currently have about 75 employees with probably 125 devices on the network. I'd like to create about 10 vlans for the different departments and then configure intervlan routing as needed. Currently we have all unmanaged switches and it's just a huge broadcast storm on the network. We are upgrading our Cisco 800 router to an ASA5505 sec. Plus license. I need some recommendations on switches. Of course, this needs to be done as cheap as possible.... Is there a way to use the ASA to configure all the vlans and intervlan routing and access lists and use a cheaper switch to provide the access layer to hosts?

I have the following config using a Cisco 1921. I am trying to get devices on the the native VLAN to get internet access via the gateway x.x.x.73.Any thing being routed from the other Vlans 15/20/30 can get access, but nothing from an internal IP address. Is there something I am missing.
The Xs replace the same 3 octets for each interface.I am trying to route from VLANs 15/20/30 to see VLAN 5. I have tried a few things, in terms of adding extra ip routes, but can't get anything to work. Each of those Vlans have another router on the other side of them, which I have also tried adding ip routes too, but nothing. One of the routers (Vlan15 is a Draytek 2830). [code]

I have purchased these two switches from ebay as a test lab, I plan to connect them up via a gigastack modulecable and enable ip routing on the c3550 and vlans to talk to each other.
I'm very much a procurve person and really need to get into the cisco switching.I will want to trunklacp between the switches - whats the process is setting that up on cisco switches?

I have a 3560E with 2 vlans that I want to route between. one device with 2 vlans and route between.Interfaces are configured as such:

Laptops on each port with 10.10.10.2 and 10.10.11.2 configured on them. I can ping from 10.10.10.2 to 10.10.11.1, but not to 10.10.11.2.What do I have to configure to be able to get the 2 laptops to talk to each other?

I have about (12x) AS 5350 XM installed in a remote site. I would like to know their serial numbers (the one on the sticker outside the AS) I know that this SN begins with JMX and contains 11 characters. When tel netting those AS, and type the following commands : show inventory, show hardware, show version, show diag.. i can't find those serial numbers. I can find others which begins with JAE !

We have IP device on the farm switch(cat6500, which is an access layer siwtch), with the gateway on the core switches (Nexus7000), on the core when I do show ip arp, I found the mac.But when I do sh mac add add of that mac there is no port attached to that mac.
Since that particular vlan only resides on the cat 6500 and two cores, so I logged in to the 6500, and when I show mac- in that vlan, I didn’t find that mac addresss. Instead, I found another mac address with last 8bit are the same of that mac.
Is it some kind VIP of the mac? How so, if no port, how can the switch forward the frame? [code]

I am setting up a vm environment for a customer in my lab off site. I have two stacked 3750-x switches, a san, and threes UCS c220 M3S servers for hosts. I am trying to separate the lan traffic, san iscsi traffic, and san management traffic using vlans. The problem is i'm unable to communicate cross vlan with my current config, which I have attached to this post. The only noteworthy things in my conifg is that the ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.83.6 is referring to a switch stack they have on site, that I will connect this stack to using the first two trunk ports on each switch, that I do not have here in the lab. I don't want to cause any confusion in why I have things set a certain way.

We currently have a stack of 5 x 3750 switches and i want to remove switch number 3 (it has the least number of things plugged in). What will happen to switch 4 and 5 will they be renumbered 3 and 4, and will the config automatically update this if it does?

I have configured the following access-list on routers fa0 interface (i am using 1801)
access-list 111 permit ip any any log
and applied it in "in" direction on Fa0 interface.
Now when i am sending ssh packets to this interface its showing below

why its not showing any port number ?

Although I am quite used to using the WLC 4402 and the attached APs, I have no knowledge about licensing and I'm wondering if it has a limited number of AP's that can be controlled by the WLC? I'm not planning on adding 1000's but at the moment we have 21 and will probably be adding an additional 30 in the near future.

we've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?
