Cisco VPN :: 5505 VPN Tunnel Consistently Dropping
Jul 3, 2011
I have a ASA 5505 VPN Concentrator using ADSM 5.2 connecting to a BEFSX41 router. Its a pretty simple set up that has been working for years. However, over the past several weeks the VPN tunnel is consistently dropping every day or two, however both side are able to ping the internet at all times. My current work around is to manually log into the BEFSX41 router and re-connect the VPN tunnel, which simply connects immediately. The tunnel will stay up for about a day or two until it reliably drops the tunnel connection. Every time the tunnel drops I get an alert with an error message: [code] After doing searches about what this error means, all I can find is that its supposed to mean there is a problem with the encryption keys. I have checked the keys many times over and everything is the same. I find it odd that nothing has changed in almost 2 years.
I have 10 other VPN connections that are always up at never have any problems. I have the same make/model router connected to other offices with no problems. I have swapped the router twice, and each time I get the same symptoms.

I have just purchased a DIR-825. Set up went through without a hitch. (I have it wired, not wireless at the moment). But I am consistently dropping my connection to the internet/Lan . I have a dual boot system (WinXP-Win7) and it's happening on both platforms, so i know it's not an OS problem. I have reverted to my old DIR-604 out of frustration. I was hoping you might have suggestions or a potential solution before I contact customer support for official assistance (if it exists) on this matter.

We have approx. 40 branch offices that connect to our core IOS Firewall (2951) over ipsec VPN Tunnel. One particular site has been facing issues over the past few days. This site will sporadically drop it's VPN Tunnel and reestablish after a few seconds. If I run debug crypto ipsec and crypto isakmp on the site that is dropping, it is constantly going through the DPD process. If I run these same commands on another site, they seem to run DPD at all.
Here is some of the output I am seeing on the site that is failing.

I have our main site using a Cisco 5510 running 8.4.2 code and a remote site using a Cisco 5505 running 8.4.2 code. The main site has a T1 and the remote site is using a DSL connection. About every other day I have to reset the connection at the remote site. The process that I have found that works is to remove the nat statement, clear the cry ips sa and then add back the nat statement. The connection usually comes back up and a few minutes. I am trying to see what is causing this to drop.

We have a Cisco ASA and recently purchased a cisco small business srp527 router. It is connected to our ADSL2 connection and is working fine. I have configured the device with an ipsec tunnel using an ike profile and the tunnel is created successfully with packets traversing the tunnel. However packets are being dropped intermittently, with no cause. The link is currently not being utilised, there is no load on the network however when I ping Google and any address subject to the rules of the tunnel i notice that a single packet is dropped every now and then.

I recently tried resetting my router (dlink dir-655). I am able to connect using my iphone and my mbp if I did not make use of a secure connection. I tried putting a password on a new ssid. My ipad 2 and 2 other windows laptops are able to connect without any problem. My iphone 4s was having a hard time connecting to the new ssid. It does not connect automatically just in case I turn on and off my wifi connection for the iphone. I have to type in the wpa password whenever I had to go online again. FYI, I tried resetting my iphone several times and I still get the same response. As for my mac, it was far more much worse. Whenever I tried to connect to my router. It usually says connection time out. I tried resetting the router one more time again. I had to put in the old ssid and the old wpa password. My Iphone 4s was abe to connect automatically. My mbp did the same thing also.

I have an E1200 model 1 router. I've owned it for over a year and it's given me no problems until now...Hardwired ethernet connections work fine, but the wifi no longer works consistently. I have several wireless-N wifi devices that either cannot connect to the router at all (they present an error message), or do connect but will not load anything over the connection, or will load web pages very very slowly and then suddenly drop the connection. When I go to the DCHP client table, I see all of my ethernet connections but it does not show any wifi devices, even if the WiFi device is showing a connection to the router. The wifi connection is secured via WPA2 Personal.I have tried changing channels to one that was not congested with any other nearby routers. I have also tried a 30-30-30 factory reset. I am updated to the latest firmware version (1.0.03). I am sure I am entering the correct pass phrase to connect over WPA2. All of my wifi devices are confirmed to be wireless-n, not g or b.

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 - 50 VPN edition. I have baffling network issues that I have not been able to pinpoint and I recently started to think it may have something to do with my ASA. I'm a network administrator and I have a Cisco ASA 5505 in my home network so I can learn how to manage Cisco ASA's and utilize the Easy VPN feature so I have a always on VPN connection into work to log into servers, etc. I've been using the ASA for almost 6 months with the EasyVPN feature with no issues. My ISP is Comcast.
Within the last week my connections have been randomly dropping for about 20 seconds and then reconnecting. I have two computers on the network that have a direct ethernet run to the switch ports on the back of the ASA. When the connection drops, I see my LAN icons completely lose connectively (yellow exclamation warning) then after 20 seconds, reconnect. This is very random. I was able to get it to happen every time I connected to XBOX live and play a online game. It would almost on cue drop after 30 minutes of online gamming. Here are the steps I have taken:
1. Replaced 10/100 switch to a brand new 10/100/1000 switch from computer run in my office to the ASA.
no joy
2. I upgraded the ASA to the most recent firmware: ASA Version 8.4, ASDM Version 6.4
no joy
3. I had an ethernet run under my carpet to the office, I started to think that maybe one of the cables had an issue after walking on it and vacumming causing a short. I removed all the ethernet under the carpet and installed power line over ethernet adapter from the ASA to my office.
no joy
4. I checked both computers on the network for viruses. All computers came back clean after scanning wth Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware.
5. I've watched the logs on the ASA as the LAN connection drops and I don't see error messages to troubleshoot this issue.
The only thing left to replace is the Comcast modem or the Cisco ASA. The Comcast modem is newer and only about 1 year old (rented from Comcast). Since my actual LAN connection drops and I lose connectively I believe there may be some issue with the ASA or the ASA switch ports or some sort of internal hardware issue on the ASA.

i got a person who connect with vpn on a adsl connection to the corporate network.this person is using cisco ip phone on his remote location and i did configure the ASA 5505 to priorize voice over data.i still get voice skips when the remote pc is uploading data to the corporate network...what i've done is :
1.with asdm i did create 2 priority queues one for inside (queue limit 2048 trans ring limit 512) and outside (queue limit 2048 trans limit 256)
2. with the service policy wizard i did create a global service policy (all interface) and a traffic class for dscp 46 ef and on qos tab i did check the "enable priority for this flow"...
3. When using the phone, i clearly see that packets are growing on the LLQ queue (show priority-queue statistics)
4. i still get voice skips when uploading data to the corporate network... upload bandwidth is about 800k for upload the pc and the phone is on the same subnet

I finally got the VPN tunnel between 2 asa 5505's up and running, but I have some error codes on the initiator side that I can not figure out. [code]I have looked at the Crypto transforms on both sides, and they match just fine as far has the DH ID code, Group Number and the encryption. The remote side however, does not have any of there errors.
Is this something that I have skipped over, or missed that I should be looking for? The IP address that is listed above is not in my static addresses, not sure where theose are coming from. I believe that they are outside public IP's.

We're setting up a site to site VPN with a customer. Our side is a Cisco sa520 and there side is a Checkpoint. The tunnel is up, we've verified phase 1 and 2 are good. The issue is passing traffic across the tunnel, our LAN ip address are private addresses 10.10.1.0/24 but the customer states that we need to have a public IP address for our LAN in order to access there server on there LAN. So looking through all the forums, I see that you can NAT before crossing the VPN tunnel, but our issue is that our site only has 6 IP addresses assigned to it and those are the Comcast router, the WAN side of the SA520 firewall.
So we were wondering was there a way that we can either use the WAN interface on the SA520 or use another available of the 6 that were assigned to NAT and pass traffic across the tunnel. Sounds confusing? sorry but it is, rarely do I have a customer say I have to have a public IP for my side of the LAN. Now I also say this is a SA520 firewall, but if it's not possible to do with that is there a way were could with an ASA5505?

We have a Cisco ASA 5505 (v7.2(3)) with a "fairly" normal configuration yet we have a problem where it appears UDP/53 traffic is denied on our inside network.
here is output from our sys log:
SyslogID Source IP Dest IP Description
305006 172.18.22.3 portmap translation creation failed for udp src inside:172.18.22.156/42013 dst inside:172.18.22.3/53
To give some clarification:
172.18.22.3 is one of our DNS servers
172.18.22.156 is a device we're experimenting with.
We've bypassed the Cisco by using a 4G wireless router with this same device - and it works flawlessly. Here is a [scrubbed] copy of our config. It is what I inherited from the previous admin - I'm not sure of all its finer points (I'm not Cisco certified -- perhaps I'm just certifiable.)

One of our hospitals keeps reporting that their internet is going out for a while than comes back up, sometimes they even have to reset the ISP modem for this it to work again. I upgraded and switched ISP to Time Warner Cable and figured it would essentially solve the issue, but there are still reports of internet outage and our new ISP has confirmed multiple times that their end is still up. Our ASA 5505 was configured by a previous employee, but when looking at the running config I noticed that the Interface for our ISP is NOT set to Duplex Full and Speed 100.

Trying to add inside routes on an ASA 5505 to point traffic to another gateway for other connected networks is resulting in the following error 6Sep 16200 819:13:5810601510.184.236.1265003810.170.54.1823389Deny TCP (no connection) from 10.184.236.126/50038 to 10.170.54.182/3389 flags RST on interface insideI believe the problem is due to the Asymetric tcp connection and the ASA is dropping the connection because it only see one half of the traffic. Is there a way we can stop the firewall dropping the TCP connections on the inside interface? i've tried removing the threat managment which didnt work.Annoying thing is were putting the ASA 5505's in to replace old Watchguard soho firewalls only the watchguards forwarded the traffic no problem at all.

Networking is not my gig, but it has to be at this very moment. We have an ASA 5505. Let me explain what's going on.
On Tuesday I wanted to be able to use the ASDM since there is less room for error. But we only had a console set up. So I ran the following commands...
in ($config)
http of course didn't do anything incomplete command
http 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.255 didn't anything incomplete command
http 192.168.200.254 255.255.255.255 inside
[Code]....
Everything started working after that. Everything worked fine all of wednesday and thursday. Then this morning it stopped processing again. When I traceroute it gets to the machine that is hooked up to the console and stops. So I'm guessing its actually getting to the ASA router and being swallowed up again...

I have an interesting SVPN challenge that I'm asking the subject experts here to assist me in solving.A customer in Domain A wants to transmit data to Domain B. The customers have agreed to establishing a secure vpn connection from Domain A to Domain B to transmit real time data. The challenge comes from sending unencrypted data from nodeA to nodeB & nodeC withing an encrypted VPN tunned to node d.The challenge is sending non-encrypted data from NodeA to NodeB where an encrypted VPN session is active. Every time I attempt to configure the interface (AppC) the VPN session is terminated, and the interface can no longer "see" nodeD via IP mapping. An engineer recommended adding a second NIC card to NodeB thereby permitting control of the AppC even when the VPN is up and running. Can I send live non-encrypted data to NodeB data buffer, while AppC sends data to NodeD in a VPN tunnel ?

I have set up two ASA 5505's (lets call them ASA1 and ASA2) with site to site VPN configuration and i've encountered two problems with my setup.ASA1 has IP 192.168.1.254 on the inside interface and is connects ASA2. It's also an Easy VPN Server for external users to connect through Easy VPN Client.ASA2 has IP 192.168.11.1 on the inside interface and connects to ASA1 Problem #1 None of the ASA's can ping eachothers inside LAN IP address. Computers behind the ASA's are unable to ping the remote ASA's inside IP address. My guess is that this has to do with either NAT or built in security.Problem #2. The Easy VPN clients which connects to ASA1 are unable to access the LAN behind ASA2.

I have a site to site IPSec tunnel setup and operational but periodically the remote site goes down, because of a somewhat reliable internet connection. The only way to get the tunnel to re-establish is to go to the remote site and simply issue a ping from a workstation on the remote network. We were having this same issue with a Cisco PIX 506E but decided to upgrade the hardware and see if that resolve the issue. It ran for well over a year and our assumtions was that the issue was resolved. I was looking in the direction of the security-association lifetime but if we power cycle the unit, I would expect that it would kill the SA but even after power cycling, the VPN does not come up automatically.

I have two cisco ASA 5505 devices and two cisco switches plugged to ASAs in each office. I need to create a VPN tunnel between two offices.
-Network behind the ASA1 in office1 is 192.168.1.0/24 with DHCP server – 192.168.1.10
-Networks behind the ASA2 in office2 are 192.168.5.0/25; 192.168.5.128/26 and 192.168.5.192/26
All computers in office2 need to get IPs from DHCP server 192.168.1.10. I have switch in office2 with 3 VLANS and I can assign computers from different subnets to different VLANs.How can I archive this goal? Should I assign 3 IPs for ASA2 inside interface (192.168.5.1, ...5.129, ...5.193) as a default gateways for each subnet? Should I put dhcp helper address 192.168.1.10 on the switch for each VLAN?

I have a Site to Site IPSEC VPN Tunnel created with ASDM wizard.
Cisco ASA-5505
Peer A: x.x.x.x
Lan A: 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0
Fortinet FortiGate-50b
Peer B: y.y.y.y
Lan B: 192.168.23.0 255.255.255.0
I start traffic from LAN B with a ping (or telnet it doesn't matter) that receive no reply but tunnel goes up fine.
"show isakmp sa" seems ok (says "State : MM_ACTIVE")
"show ipsec sa" seems ok but all #pkts are zero
try ftp, telnet from LAN B to LAN A systems but no one work. "show ipsec sa" all #pkts are zero As soon as I generate traffic from LAN A to LAN B these works (with tunnel already up) also traffic from LAN B to LAN A works.Obviously if I end VPN and start tunnel making traffic from LAN A all work fine bidirectionally, LAN A reach LAN B and LAN B reach LAN A.No msg logged in either two appliance.
Seems a very strange problem because seems not related to Phase1 or Phase2 already established.Traffic (routing ?) start works only after at least one packet goes from LAN A to LAN B.No msg logged in either two appliance.Problems begun in ASA version 8.0(4) ASDM version 6.1(3) and remain/continue after upgrade to ASA Version 8.4(1) ASDM version 6.4(1).

I upgraded an ASA 5505 from 8.3(2) to 8.4(4) this evening. The 5505 is a backup and used to perform testing prior to production changes. After the upgrade was complete, a VPN tunnel began to fail. I did a limited search online to see if this was a known issue or something new. I also reviewed the release notes but did not see anything that matched the issue I received.
My concern is that this tunnel configuration is scheduled to be deployed to the production firewalls next week after their upgrade. But if it failed on the upgraded test unit, it may fail on the production units.
I downgraded the backup unit to 8.3(1) and verified that the tunnel indeed worked at that level.
