"Authentication test to host 192.168.xxx.xxx failed. Following error occurred -- ERROR: Authentication server not responding. No Error"
Cisco Routers :: Configuration RV042 V3 IPSec VPN To PIX 8.0(4)?
May 15, 2013I am not having much success setting up a IPSec VPN tunnel between a RV042 V3 running v4.0.0.07 firmware and PIX 525 running 8.0(4) code.
Let's say the configuration looks like this:
The RV042 has public IP 70.0.0.1 and private LAN IP 192.168.1.1 /24 The PIX has outside IP 69.0.0.1 and inside LAN IP 172.16.0.1 /24 The RV042 is running as DHCP server on it's private LAN A Windows server at 172.16.0.2 is the DHCP server on the PIX's inside LAN.
I've tried every option on the RV042 for Phase 1 and Phase 2, but I am not certain how to configure the Advanced features especially Aggressive Mode, Compress, Keep-Alive, AH Hash Algorithm and Dead Peer Detection.
On the PIX I've tried the basic setup through ADSM, but it's not as clear or obvious to configure both sides with compatible settings compared to setting up a tunnel between two RV042s.

- Speedport uses NAT for forwarding ports 500 and 4500 to RV042
- RV042 should be the VPN-server
- LAN should be completely able to be accessed by the VPN-client (network printer, shared folders on windows, remote access ...)
- VPN connection should use IPSec for high security
- NAT-T must been used because Speedport only forwards UDP/TCP-ports and no protocols
I have some questions:
- how should I configure the IPSec on RV042?
- which VPN client software should I use ( NAT-T an Win7 64bit must be supported ) and how should it been configured?
This scenario with VPN-server behind a router should be a common one, but I can't realise it alone.Normally I work as professional supporter for Cisco SMB (since 3 weeks), but this scenario is new for me and I don't know how to solve this problem.

Jul 18, 2012I have a client that needs to establish a IPsec tunnel to a large organization. They will not forward any traffic to an IP using private reserved IPs. However I am not finding another way to accomplish this. I tried ipsec to the router and using a second IP to a 1:1 Nat but it will not pass the traffic and would seem really insecure from the public internet. 1:1 Nat does work from the public internet but not over the tunnel.I have an RV042 a /29 block of IPs. I am at a loss of how I can accomplish what they want without allowing a private IP.

Sep 11, 2011Here is what we are trying to do: (server names have been changed to protect the innocent, etc.)3 servers at 3 different locations - all running Server 2008 R2 and all on the same domain
setup:
server01 (has the print server role and printers are shared out)
server02 (has the print server role and printers are shared out)
terminal_server (a terminal server)
We have printers on server01 and on server02 that we need to install on terminal_server.The printers install just fine onto terminal_server from server01 when browsing and connecting or opening the shared printers.
The printers on server02 give thes error message when trying to connect to or open them from terminal_server:"The operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709). Double check and make sure that the printer is connected to the network."However, the printers from server02 will install and work just fine IF I install them as IP printers.

Feb 28, 2011Client has a Dell T310 SBS 2008 box with 3 workstations running Windows 7 Professional.
Network is currently like this
Westell DSL Modem > Belkin Router (consumer crap) > Dell Powerconnect 2816 > server > workstations
I used the wizards on SBS to configure the internet, add the users, connect the computers, etc.
We are having intermittent internet problems. The only problem in the server SYSTEM eventlog is "Cannot connect to DNS server". At first I thought it was a server DNS issue so I changed the maxcacheTTL to 3 days. However, I noticed that I couldn't get into the Belkin configuration so I had to manually reset the router and everything worked fine. One thing to note is that the SBS server is handling DHCP and DNS, and in the router configuration there isn't an option to not use an alternate config or the ISP. Could this be causing the problem?
I don't do this as my day job, so I need some good fixes or things to look for. The fix right now is to power cycle the router.

Apr 5, 2013We are currently running Windows 2003 Domain in our network with DHCP turned on the Server. We have turned off the DHCP on the Router. We are using RV042 as out Gateway to the internet and everything is working fine. We would like to allow a couple of our users to be able to VPN into the network so that they can use Outlook and be able to access their files on the Shared Folder. The users would be using their laptops from their homes to connect via VPN using the standard Windows 7 VPN connection.
In the RV042 Interface there are many options and I am not sure I understand which setting would allow them to connect successfully to the network, be authenicated as a domain user.

Feb 10, 2013A client of mine has a Cisco RV042 Router. I've configured it to run VPN and it works, sort of. Some clients can connect, others can't, for no discernible reason.
Specific machine issues are Windows 7 x64 or x86, Quick VPN latest release, unobtrusive (Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials) security, etc. 2 separate machines on the same home remote network, 1 can connect just fine, the other can't. My laptop (Win7 x64) connects just fine, one of my techs can connect OK, the IT support guy that works for this client can connect.

Jul 14, 2012I am having difficulty with gateway to gateway vpn on RV042.I have site A and site B, both have static IP address,local IP at site A is 192.168.1.0 local IP at site B is 192.168.5.0I have configured each site as directed in the documentation, the sites connect ok within the admin consoles, I cannot browse any resources from either site. Site A is a domain.local and I am part of that domain at site B. I can ping site B local address from site A and vice versa however I can not ping any of the servers or NAS devices on either network. the only device I can ping successfully inside the network is a phone server (splicecom unit).
I have read various posts in the discussion boards but have found no resolve. Internet access is fine from either site. I think that it could possibly be a DNS issue but am unsure, should I add DNS entries in the advanced section, if so what DNS would I enter?

I was going to use VPNC with linux but the company said they do not use remote access. So I tried a draytek vigor 3300v, that as well did not work. Had very bad logging so i couldn't troubleshoot.In the end I have decided to buy the cheapest cisco device that will allow me to connect to this.

Jul 18, 2011Im able to create a gateway tunnel with two rv042 routers in different locations ( i can see the tunnel connected in the router) but the quick vpn utility is not working , i also tried to use the pptp as server as an alternative( im able to connect using windows connection to the pptp server but whenever I browse any of the four ip's allowed for the pptp server \10.0.0.200-204 it takes me to the documents of the local computer....I attached the configuration for one of the routers it is the same as the other end , just the information is flipped.

Aug 25, 2011I am currently having some problems on our 5520 ASAs. The problem is the IPSec VPN clients not being able to connect. We have had an issue twice this week where this happened. Earlier in the week we had folks not able to sign in, but some folks who were connected already stayed connected. The ASAs had been up for 200+ days and no changes have been made to it recently. At that point I had to reload the ASAs so users could start signing back in to it. Today we had a similar issue, but I didn’t have to reload the ASAs. The issue‘resolved’ itself. The VPN clients are getting Error code: 433 and the ASAs are getting Reason: Peer Address Changed when this occurs.
ASA5520, 2048 MB RAM, CPU Pentium 4 Celeron 2000 MHz version 8.3.2.

May 22, 2012I've spent 2 days already trying to get 2 ASA 5505's to connect using an IPSec vpn tunnel. I cannot seem to figure out what im doing wrong, im using 192.168.97.0 and 192.168.100.0 as my internal networks that i'm trying to connect over a directly connected link on the outside interfaces with 50.1.1.1 and 50.1.1.2 as the addresses (all /24). I also tried with and currently without NAT enabled. Here are the configs for both ASA's, the vpn config was done by the ASDM, however i have also tried the command line apporach with no success.
