Cisco WAN :: ASN 65500 / IBGP Peering Is Flapping?

May 15, 2013

Topology :

PE router-T (ASN 1111) ----eBGP---- CE router-T (ASN 65500) ----iBGP---- CE router-V (ASN 65500 ) ----eBGP---- PE router-V (ASN 2222)

When We have configured in this mannger everything is working fine. Only thing is that I can not receive all the NEtwork updates coming from PE- Router - V in CE router T. It's due to synchroization rule (I have not tunrned off synch in CE Router T.) Now for Load sharing purpose I have applied one Route map on iBGP peering from CE Router V to CE router T in OUT direction  mentioning any routes coming via ASN 65555 than set Local Preference = 150 and will prefer path via MPLS SP - V. Rest via MPLS SP - T.

But as soon as I have applied the Route-Map. It's not reflected. When I have applied clear ip bgp * on CE rotuer - V than I can see two routes in CE router - T with LP 150 and default. Everything is working OK.

When trying to check the auto failover by Shuting LAN int of CE router-V --- Failover is also working via CE router-T.When reenabling the LAN int  ----- After that iBGP perring is flapping continuolsly. Finally We have remove the route-map ad it was stable.

find the route map :

CE Router - V
router bgp 65500
  !
address-family ipv4

[code].....

I have also checked the MTU issue between these two Peer (LAN int. of both the CE routers) by pinging each other with size 1500 with df-bit set.

Cisco WAN :: 6513 MP-iBGP And Route Reflector

Nov 13, 2012

We are a service provider and we have presence across different data centres located across the country. Our core boxes are the mixture of Cisco VXR’s and 6513 switches which have MP-iBGP peering with the route reflectors. If a new client comes on board, a new VRF will be created to carry the client’s traffic and as a standard practice the VRF will be added to all the core devices across the network even if they don’t have a presence in a data centre. Now, I am designing a network for a client who has presence only at two fixed locations as shown in the attached diagram. We will be acting as a transit network between the client and another service provider. So, I have planned to use MP-eBGP between us and the other provider and default/static routes to the client’s network I don’t think will be an issue. Since the client has presence only at two locations, my design thoughts are to create a VRF and a Vlan and form an iBGP session only between the two routers and bypassing Route Reflectors. Created the VRF at BNE_R1 and formed MP-eBGP relation with the other provider and I can see some routes appearing via the peering which is normal and expected.

My problem is (not problem I don’t understand how this is happening), I created the VRF on Mel_R1 router and did not add any extra lines of configurations to BGP under that VRF instance and when I was checking some thing I accidentally found the same routes which appears on Bne_R1 is appearing in the VRF’s routing table via MP-iBGP session through route reflector. I can’t understand how this is happening, since I haven’t added any thing on the route reflector and some how its leaking traffic.

Is this normal??Is it’s a must / standard / Good Practise to add the newly created VRF across all the device which peers with the route reflector ??Is there a way to override the Route Reflector just for this client (VRF) and form a direct MP-iBGP peering directly with the devices involved.A network can be designed in much number of ways.

Cisco :: VRF Aware Peering With Straight BGP?

Mar 24, 2013

I have a scenario where I may have to run VRFs on a router that is currently facing an ISP as a BGP peer. peering two BGP peers, one of which is VRF aware (and hence configured within the address-family ipv4 vrf X subsection) and the other is not? (the BGP aware and internet facing segment will go into its own VRF where previously this router was only in that VRF and hence had no awareness). Are there any caveats or restrictions? Does the presence of the VRF throw the ISP peer?

Cisco WAN :: BGP Peering Causes 7200 To Crash?

Apr 10, 2012

I have two 7204VXR with NPE-G2 and 1Gb of ram. One router has 2 eBGP peers and the other has 3. The routers receive all internet routes from the 5 peers and send 2 internal routes. There is an iBGP peering between both routers. On all peers I have a route-map to send only our routes.

All was working fine since a couple of months when I suddenly saw an increase of memory on one of the router (router B), 1 hour later the memory was 100% and router crash and reboot. The other router (router A) with the same hardware capacity, same ram and same amount of routes was working good. After router B restart, I shut all eBGP peering on it, keeping only iBGP with router A, ram used was the same as router A (about 50% used) but CPU was about 30% used by process Router BGP whereas router A which has active traffic and active eBGP is only 20% and bgp process i almost 0%. Restarting peers one by one on router B cause the same issue, increase of memory then crash, even with only one peer.

What I suspected :

- A peer on router B but I can't isolate one because the problem appears with each taken one by one

- Not enough memory,  but router A has the same number of routes and don't have any problem

- IOS version ? same on both 12.4.(15)T1

- Why process router BGP use 30% on router B when all eBGP peers are shut except iBGP and no traffic pass.

- A routing loop but I only send internal routes to peers and only have one iBGP session with no sync nor redistribution with an IGP

Of course I can't run any debu ip bgp on routers as the number of routes is very large (300K).

Cisco VPN :: EZVPN Between 2811 And SR520 Flapping

Mar 31, 2011

I am having an issue get an EZVPN working between a 2811 server and a SR520 client. The symptoms are the SR520 makes multiple connection attempts to the 2811.  It appears that sometimes these connections are successful and the SR520 is assigned an IP address but then the tunnel will be dropped and a new session will be started.  I've attached scrubed configs for both the 2811 and the SR520. One other note, when connecting to the 2811 with a software VPN client, there are no problems, so I think the problem is with the SR520.  On the other hand, the SR520 wasn't having any problems until we switched our VPN server from a UC520 to the 2811.

Cisco WAN :: 887M 3G Modem - Link Flapping?

Nov 18, 2012

I've been handed an 887M with a PCEX-3G-HSPA-R6 card in it, and asked to get it working on the big, bad internet.I've managed to get it to the point that it at least *tries* to connect to the internet over the 3G network - but I've run into a problem I can;t, for all my google-fu, find an answer to.

Details - Router is an 887M/K9, running 15.1(1)T1. 3G SIM is confirmed OK (I've put it into my laptop, which has a cellular modem, and it works fine).

What happens is that the ce0 interface connects, and then immediately drops, and goes into reset mode. I'm stuffed if I know why - not sure if I need to do a firmware change to it, or soemthing else to the config.

Config (which is very basic - I just want it on the internet before I get fancy) is below

Router#sh run
Building configuration...
Current configuration : 1504 bytes
!
! Last configuration change at 03:48:36 UTC Tue Nov 20 2012
!
version 15.1

It *seems* to come up, but immediately drops out, and I can't figure out why.

PO5 goes to our primary wireless controller.  Gi2/9 goes to a Cisco 4500 switch that also has a PO5 on it for a failover lan controller and TE7/2 is another core switch.

These mac-address all seem to point to PO 5 which is the port channel assigned to Wireless Controller interfaces.

How do I determine if this is a spanning-tree loop?  No ports are err-disabled.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750G Access Layer Mac Flapping

Mar 28, 2013

Lately I have been noticing mac flap messages on some of our access layer 3750G switches. Just a little background on how this is setup.

These 3750G switches are stacked and uplinked to a distribution layer 3750E stack (2 switches) via cross stacked etherchannel. (Usually 4 links) The access layer switches are stricly layer 2 where the distribution layer 3750E is routing the VLANs at the access layer to to the core 6500 switches.

I have just about ruled out physical loops on these stacks for the reason that the Macs are flapping. I am seeing this on two different stacks now each having 3 switches in the stack at the access layer. The cross stack etherchannel is spanned across the first two switches at the access layer and connected to both switches at the distribution layer. I have checked the etherchannel status and all ports appear to be part of the etherchannel and they appear fine.

The mac addressses that are flapping are just plain old desktop machines that plug directly into the access layer. I usually see this when the mac is learned on a port such as when a machine is plugged into the network or reboots.
