Cisco WAN :: Serial Up Line Protocol Down On 1900 Router With Single T1 Connection
Jul 11, 2012
Have been battling a router connection to new ATT t1 connection. Router was configured and sent from sister company to this new location. We have had ATT tech test circuit and it tests good, had cat5 cable tested from ATT to router, it tests good. I continue to get serial up/ line protocol down status though and cant communicate to it from wan.

I am a total new comer for Cisco Router. All I know is plug the console cable to a serial port on a PC, fire-up HyperTerminal to view and that's it. I don't know any command or scripts.
I am trying to setup my client connection, I already receive the required configuration settings from ISP. It is a Leased Line Serial connection.
How to setup the router with the below configuration.
Serial IP : 1.X.XX.222
Serial Netmask : 255.255.255.XXX
LAN IP : 1.X.XXX.1 to 1.X.XXX.31
LAN Netmask : 255.255.255.XXX

I was working on a problem the other day and came across something that I had seen before but never given much thought. I had a router with a switch connected to it and the interface was showing as Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down. The problem in the end turned out to be a cable that had fell out because it was not connected correctly, but I was able to replicate this interface status on a router (FastEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is down), and NO cable was attached to the interface.I've had a look on the internet but cant seem to find a good answer, so does anybody else know why this status is shown on the router? Remember, NO cable is connected to the interface so it isn't a speed or duplex problem

how to bring this interface back up? It's a 1252 with 80211.n.I started configuring it with CLI and then was using the web interface. I made a change on the web interface and it caused the AP to hang. I rebooted it and can access via Hyperterminal, but I cannot ping the IP address nor bring it up in the web interface any longer.I tried the "No shut" command in the BVI1 interface.

I'm replacing a PA-POS-OC3-SM with PA-POS-1OC3 in a flex Wan module (WS-X6582-2PA) in Cisco 6506 using WS-SUP32P-GE PISA.I have a hard time bringing the "protocol up. the status I see is line up and protocol down. Debug shows (attached) no comunication with the edge router but when i put the older PA (PA-POS-OC3-SM ) back evertything works fine and older PA has been running for many years without the issue. I'm replacing older PA is becuase this is going EOL. I had opened a TAC case but the TAC engineer added no value. [code]

We have a 6 spoke DMVPN setup. Five of the six spokes work fine. On the 6th spoke, a 2911, we have created a Tunnel0. Other spokes and the hubs can ping it's ip, but it can't ping itself. When we do a show interface it shows the Tunnel 0 is up, but the protocol is down. What does that mean?

I work for a Wireless ISP and the device impacted is the back haul radio into the site. I have swapped from a 2950T to a 3550. Replaced the radio, PoE, patch lead. We have re ran the cable up the tower using shielded outdoor cable with a drain wire which has been earthed to an earthing block in the cabinet. We have other devices on the tower not experiencing the issue. We suspect cable interference however am now at a loss to diagnose further.

About a week ago I changed over 9 HP Procurve switches that were previously stacking in series (yeah, daisy-chain) to a Access-Distribution type scenario with 2 (or 4 on server switches) Gb ports on each switch Trunked together connecting to a central full 48x Gb switch.
During this I updated firmwares on all the switches (most still on their shipped 5-8 year old versions) to the latest stable release (and in the process found out that HP switch firmware is absolutely brutal and untested - See ProCurve 2510G FW 11.16 as an example) .
I saw vast improvements across the network immediately after the change (wow, really? 9 48-port switches effectively sharing a single 1Gb line to the servers and internet was a bit slow? Don't tell my co-workers, they don't think that's possible ) .
The only thing that I didn't see an improvement in was on some Linux and BSD servers, which would top out at 11MB/s doing a SMB (SAMBA) transfer. These are managed systems part of our business system, but we still need to be able to pull local backups for ourselves. So I contacted our vendor. The vendor confirmed that the line speed is showing as 1000T-FDx (same as the switch is showing).
Vendor is now claiming that after these changes were put in place, the speed on their servers (and their servers ONLY) was reduced to a maximum of 5MB/s (~60Mb/s?) doing rsync transfers between themselves. And they are all on the same 2510 (48 port all 10/100/1000), which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me. Furthermore this is on the ONLY switch on the entire network that had an updated firmware already installed - that's not even a possibility here.
I put some windows servers on that switch and can get 60MB/s+ all day (SMB transfers). I've also tried from their one server that I can access to doing an rsync or scp to another BSD box, and max out at 15MB/s (with 100% CPU usage on the test box - I'm assuming the decryption is pretty heavy?)There is absolutely no QoS, limiting, or any possibility of throttling the links the servers are on the switch. There are no excessive broadcasts saturating it, and the ports and cables test fine.

Does Nexus 7K support Multiple VDCs sharing ports on a single line card. One of our cisco parnter engineers stated that cisco doenst recommend using same line card for multiple VDCs.The second VDC (Non-Default VDC) will be used four our Outside, and DMZ Segment, and to phyiscally segregate our Firewall from our Internal/Inside Core Switch without using a physical DMZ Switch.I know Cisco used the Nexus in this way in their PCI DSS 2.0 Compliance Document. Today I was having a conversation with my Cisco Academy teacher from a few years back, and we couldn't figure this out.I am getting an internet connection via Verizon FiOS. Instead of giving me an ISR, they're going to just give me an ethernet cable. Here's what I want to do with it.
This cable is going to be plugged into a 1900 series router. Connect to that will be a 48 port switch. Connected to that will be multiple servers to be used for web hosting, email, databases, etc. My ISP is providing me with 13 public addresses, however, it is not my own unique subnet.
Here comes the question; how would I set this up? The way I was originally thinking was to assign one IP to fa0/0, a second to fa0/1, and then assign the fa0/1 address as the default gateways for all the hosts on the inside. But then I realized that it won't let me have the same network on 2 ports.

Then suddenly is not communicating... Our router Cisco 1800 from head office can ping the route Cisco 1900 on the site office, but the site office cannot ping. Why the router of head office can ping the site office router, and the site cannot? What is causing this situation?

I have a Cisco 3725 running IOS 12.3. I have three WAN connections (2 x 100Mb and 1 x 2Mb serial) and I need to replace the 2Mb serial connection with a further 100Mb connection. However, I have not got any spare 100Mb sockets. My plan is to use a switch that supports VLANs, connect the three WAN connections to the switch, each in their own VLAN, then connect the switch to one port on the router, configuring the switch port as a trunk (so that it passes all three VLANs across the link) and configuring the router so that for that single Ethernet interface, it has three subinterfaces each configured for a VLAN that matches the VLAN used for the corresponding WAN connection.
I am a bit rusty on my IOS so I wanted to run this all past the community for feedback. [code] Any thoughts on whether or not that will work? Are there any commands from the original interface configurations that I CANNOT use when moving them to a subinterface? I'm thinking that the speed & duplex commands need to be removed?

I just bought this switch off Ebay and I can't seem to find anything online on the physical connection of this switch. It's not like normal switches where it just uses a ethernet type cable that goes to serial, it requires a female to female cable which does not exist anywhere so I ended up buying a gender changer for a normal cable I had but can't seem to get the prompt to come up. I'm using 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bits and no flow control. Do some wires have to be crossed a special way or something or do I need to type anything special in the console to get the prompt? I can't find much online on this switch. At least not as far as serial connectivity goes.

I have a client whom uses a DSL 10 MG circuit as their backup circuit for Internet Connectivity in case of a failure. The circuit uses a DSL modem that is unreliable. I was recommending yesterday tot he client that perhaps we could place a Cisco router in place of the residential grade DSL modem /router currently in place.I wanted to place a 1900 ISR G2 in there, which would allow me to swap the DSL module out whenever I can talk the company into a Metro E connection. At that point I could swap the DSL module out and put an Ethernet module in to receive the Metro E. I was not able to find a solution last night using the Dynamic Configuration Tool. Seems DSL has been phased out.Is there any recommendation that could be made to accommodate this clients request for a Cisco router that will handle DSL?

The Intel N-1030 just refuses to connect at N protocol. Its almost as if the N protocol has been disabled waiting for a real fix from Intel.
I have updated firmware, etc., for router. I have several N devices and ALL connect easily and quickly. I gave up for now on the Intel WLAN N-1030 and bought a Netgear N mini-usb dongle device. With coupons it was about 10 bucks at Staples. Popped it in and what do you know, connected at N in a blink of an eye.
If Netgear can get a mini-usb N device to work properly Intel and Dell? I have set everything as suggested, power to max, router channel to auto, etc. Why no selection for wireless mode b/g/n in driver but only the 802.11n mode option?
Something is not right with this driver and implementation of the N-1030. At some point Dell is going to have to step up and provide us with what THEY advertised as the hardware we purchased. Selling a device with N protocol wireless when in reality the N protocol does not work is going to be on Dell, not on Intel.

We have Cisco 1900 Series Integrated Services Routers (has a wired router and a wireless router) and since this morning we can not send emails.I inquired with both the ISP and the hosting provider and all settings are correct.I can receive emails from outside the router, but can't send any emails out.If I try to telnet mail902.opentransfer.com 25 it doesn't connect.Port 25 is the port we were using all the time and was working through the router.I connected my laptop directly to the modem and was able to send emails using port 25, also was able to telnet to outgoing mail server. I didn't change anything in the router.is there a way to "enable" port 25 or "enable" mail.homeserviceclub.com (smtp server) or mail902.opentransfer.com (hosting mail server) if this would solve the problem?I don't understand why is this happening as I never had to enable or disable any email ports or mail server addresses.

I have cable modem (one of those Motorollas), ehternet cable connected to desktop pc (usb would be probably the same), Windows7 - host, Virtual Box -> CentOS6 - guest; no static IP, no router.I am trying to connect guest and host together and both to the Internet, there are suppose to be 3 ways to do that:
1) Adapter 1: Host-only adapter + Adapter 2: NAT; I've been trying to get it to work for a while now, but I cant; here is some info: VirtualBox Configuration (no IP for the guest? I've seen it there before though, so there might be a way to do that)
2) Bridged adapter; I think that the only way to do that is with a physical router at home or office etc; VirtualBox 4.0.2 Network Connections in Windows 7 - YouTube
3) NAT and port forwarding; I think this might be the only option, here is some info: url...

My customer is looking at using routers in DMVPN remote locations as DNS servers. He would like to be able to estimate how much memory the DNS cache will consume before going into production. I know you can get cache information when it's running, but he wants to plan ahead.I couldn't find any reports in Cisco or on the web of DNS caching causing memory issues, so I don't think he has much to worry about, but any rule of thumb as to how much memory each cache entry consumes would be useful. Or is there a protection mechanism to limit cache memory size in IOS ? The routers will be 877s and/or 1900-series.

This is the voice vlan. As u can see in the config below, this has been configured using VRRP and VRF for failover purposes. I did more of these configurations, and they all worked fine, just not with this particular router!
