Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Connecting Routers Via Serial Interface

Oct 22, 2012

While I managed to connect to each router individually, I decided it was time to connect the routers together via serial; as I don't have any serial cables and need to buy some, what serial cables I need, as well as to ask whether I have the right cards in my router(s) that will allow me to do so.

I bought 3 1841 routers, and all have a 1 port serial WAN Interface Card (WIC 1-T); one router has 2 of these, and one router has a WIC-1B-S/T .. My question is, can I connect the routers with a serial cable via WIC 1-T, or do I need a 2-T

Cisco WAN :: Can't Configure VWIC-2MFT-T1 On 1841

Jan 13, 2013

I have checked and re-checked before buying and this card is evidently supported on the 1841 for 'data mode only' which is all I need.  I have 3 T1s in Multilink mode and I want to use 2 of these cards (and 3 of the 4 ports) to support it.  The problem is that even though SH INVENTORY finds the card, I can't issue the "card type" command to indicate I am using it with a T1 - I get this:

R3(config)#card type  t1 1 0
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

So I tried to issue the "controller T1" command and it does not recognize the slot as containing a T1 card (which makes sense since the "card" command did not work).

I found numerous references to this card being supported in Cisco docs with a minimum OS around 12.2(8) - it varies based on the chassis.  I can't find the explicit OS required for the 1841 which is a concern but I am using 12.4(13r)T. SH VERSION finds "2 Channelized T1/PRI ports" which is the MFT card.

I need to get Serial interfaces configured on these cards.

Cisco WAN :: Serial Interface On WIC-1DSU-t1V2 Down

Apr 28, 2012

I have a remote site that still utilizes a single T1 connection to me.  For multiple reasons we had to scrap the old T1 and have a new one put in.  The old T1 resided on a T3 as channel 25.  The new T1 is a standlone point to point.  I removed the old config from my 7301 and programmed my 3725.  I cannot figure out what is going on but the interface stays down/down.  There is no loopback turned on, either manually or by the carrier.  The AL LED stays amber regardless of whether or not I have a cable patched down.  The CD LED remains green when I patch a cable down.  LP is not light.I am using a straight through Ethernet cable to connect my 3725 to the smart jack.  If you look at the show output below you will see DCD and CTS is down. Since the remote end was working and I just had the tech move the patch cable from one smart jack to another I am assuming the problem is on my side or with the carrierI already tried changing the clock sourced between internal and line.  I also swapped out the WIC card for another one. I don't usually program T1 connections. [code]

Cisco WAN :: 1760 - Packet Drops In Serial Interface

Feb 11, 2013

We have a Cisco 1760 router . We are facing sevier packet drops in the serial interface.

When i swap the router with another router link is working working fine.

Troubleshooting steps taken

1.       Swap the serial cable with another working cable : no change in state

2.       Reconfigure the encapsulation commands (with PPP and HDLC) : no change in state

3.       Try with a decreased MTU packet Ping : no change in state

4.       Decreased the Input queue and increased the output queue size using   hold-queue in command : Comparatively the packet drop is reducing but still a 10 percent drop is happening.

Cisco WAN :: 3845-MB Dropping Pings To Its Own Serial Interface?

May 16, 2013

I'm having an issue that I can't quite understand. I set up a test lab to get familiar with EIGRP routing. I have a Cisco 3845-MB with 2 VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards.sh ip int brief shows UP UP status on all serial ports. I gave it an IP address but I'm having trouble pinging the serial interface IP. It's dropping pings to its own S 1/1/0 interface when pinging from console. I have known good T1 crossover cables 1&2 - 4&5.

Here is the "ip int brief" from 3845-MB

3845-MB#sh ip int brief
Interface                  IP-Address      OK? Method Status                Prot
ocol
GigabitEthernet0/0         unassigned      YES NVRAM  administratively down down
GigabitEthernet0/1         172.30.2.1      YES NVRAM  up                    up
Serial1/1/0:0              10.3.29.2       YES manual up                    up

Right now it's pinging itself at about 60 -90% success rate... and I can't figure out why it's dropping any packets at all. I have other issues with in the lab as well... but i think this might be my "core" issue. To make matters even more "weird" I've tried two different VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards and I drop pings with both of them.

Here is a sh run and a sh diag:

3845-MB#sh run
Building configuration...
Current configuration : 1434 bytes

Cisco Switching/Routing :: PPP Multilink Not Coming Up On Serial Interface / 3620 Router?

Nov 1, 2011

I just finished setting up a bundle of (2) T1's in a multilink bundle and I'm having issues with one of the T1's not wanting to join the bundle.

The router I'm using on the remote office location is a 3620 router running code c3620-i-mz.121-1c.bin

The campus router which is a 7206 is setup the same exact way with multilink 240 and like I've said, serial 0/0 is joined to the bundle just fine, so we are running off one T1 connection.

The serial interface that is not working is: serial 0/1

Cisco Firewall :: 1841 NAT Out One Interface But Not Other With IOS?

Feb 27, 2012

I am trying to figure out how to use a Cisco 1841 IOS router to take traffic from one interface and source NAT it out towards the Internet on one interface and at the same time NOT perform NAT when sending the traffic towards a different routed interface.

Here the RemoteSite has connectivity back to the MainCampus, but there is no need to NAT traffic from the one site to the other.   They share the same umbrella of address space.   However, the RemoteSite needs to have its Internet-bound traffic NAT'ed out to the Public Internet via a third interface.  I know that I could just NAT everything out from the Remote Site and map the traffic back onto the same address space for intra-campus communication, but I'd rather avoid that and just NAT where I need to NAT it to the Internet.

I do have a caveat here:   in the event that either the MainCampus or the Public Internet interfaces go down, I would like to failover traffic from the downed link to other good link.  For example, I want to NAT all traffic (including "intra-campus" traffic) out via the Public Internet if the direct link to the MainCampus is down.  For the other example, if the Public Internet direct link is down, I would just send out all traffic without NAT towards the MainCampus.

I am able to create the sub-interface and setup dot1q encapsulation for VLAN 2528, but the vlan database does not have the ability to add VLAN 2528 to it so I am unable to get layer 2 up and going, thus preventing me from getting the implementation done.

Cisco WAN :: Input Errors On 1841 LAN Interface

Nov 4, 2011

I use an 1841 router as an internet facing firewall with a 10MB MetroE connection.  Lately users started reporting slow internet download speeds and web pages timing out.  Bandwidth reports do not show the link as being saturated so I looked at the interfaces on the 1841.   The interface connected to the provider shows OK as far as errors but the LAN side of the router shows steadily increasing input errors.  It doesn't show any other errors, no CRC, frame, runts, giants or overruns, just generic input errors.  What type of errors are those?  Nothing is being logged on the console.

I moved the connection to another switch ports and the errors continue.  I switched it down to 10MB and also changed the switch and the errors slow down but don't stop.  Interestingly, the switch side never shows any errors.  What can I do here?  I guess it can be a bad interface but that is such a rare thing that I am hesitant to replace the router.

Cisco WAN :: 1841 To Block Access To A Specific Interface

Feb 11, 2013

I have an 1841 between my firewall and the ISP.  Three interfaces - multilink to ISP, FA to my firewall, and FA to my inside network.  I use the inside interface for configs aand snmp access, etc.   Only my ISP-assigned fixed address block will get routed to the multilink by the ISP but I am nervous about the inside interface sitting on my LAN.   I know I can remove it, but if I keep it there, how can I set up an ACL so that all traffic from the multilink interface is denied to the inside interface?  I suppose another way to think about it that the inbound iface can only accept traffic from its own outside, not from the router.I think this is fairly simple but I don't want to knock down the traffic if I get it wrong.

Cisco WAN :: 1841 ADSL Interface Dropping Connection

Jul 2, 2012

We have an ADSL2+ line from a WIC in a 1841, everything has been fine for the last few years and then the last few months the connection going down. When checking the interfaces the ATM0/0/0 is up up and the same for the dialer interface we are using, they are both up/up, but this still needs a reload of the router to be functional again, shutting the interfaces does not bring the connection back up.

I am not an expert on ADSL lines, I have never really had a problem with anything previously. The router was running Netflow to a network monitor wondering if this or logging was causing an issue with entries in the buffer??

Here is an output of show dsl int, would change the firmware, it has been fine all this time before though we are running IOS 12.4(24)T1 advseck9-m, as far as I can seen from our ISP the config for ADSL is all correct. [Code]

Cisco WAN :: 1841 QoS Set-up For Voice Between IPSEC VPN Connected Sites

Feb 23, 2011

I have 3 sites.  Each site has a Cisco 1841 as its WAN router with a 10Mb direct internet access circuit connected to Fa0/0.  The sites are then connected to each other via site-to-site IPSEC VPN.  (The LAN switches in use at each site are Cisco 3750 series) [code]

Now, Site A has already been set-up with VoIP telephony.   The plan is to extend this to the other 2 offices.Auto QoS has been set-up on the switches and data and voice VLANs created in the same way for each office.

how should/do we extend the QoS for the voice over the WAN to ensure voice quality remains for site to site calls.  And what special considerations do we have to make for it being IPSEC VPN connectivity between the sites?  The actual IP telephony system itself is being set-up by a 3rd party and not a lot of information on their requirements has been forthcoming so far – essentially all we have really been told is that they would like us to “reserve” a certain amount of bandwidth for the voice traffic between each site.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Router's LAN Facing Interface Becomes Up / Down Frequently

Nov 14, 2011

We have a 1841 Cisco router for one of our remote sites and we have the GRE over IPSec tunnel on it (with our datacenter router) for the connectivity. The LAN facing interface becomes UP/Down (status 'UP', Protocol 'Down'). When I login the router and 'shut' and then 'no shut' the interface, the interface becomes UP and everything starts to work. Traffic starts to flow across it. But after some time, some hours or sometimes some days, the interface is again back to up/down status. The router is connected to  a non-Cisco switch. I do see some CRC's increasing very slowly, but apart from that there seems nothing wrong with the interface in sho int fas0/0 command:
