Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Connecting Routers Via Serial Interface

Oct 22, 2012

While I managed to connect to each router individually, I decided it was time to connect the routers together via serial; as I don't have any serial cables and need to buy some, what serial cables I need, as well as to ask whether I have the right cards in my router(s) that will allow me to do so.

I bought 3 1841 routers, and all have a 1 port serial WAN Interface Card (WIC 1-T); one router has 2 of these, and one router has a WIC-1B-S/T .. My question is, can I connect the routers with a serial cable via WIC 1-T, or do I need a 2-T

Cisco Switching/Routing :: PPP Multilink Not Coming Up On Serial Interface / 3620 Router?

Nov 1, 2011

I just finished setting up a bundle of (2) T1's in a multilink bundle and I'm having issues with one of the T1's not wanting to join the bundle.

The router I'm using on the remote office location is a 3620 router running code c3620-i-mz.121-1c.bin

The campus router which is a 7206 is setup the same exact way with multilink 240 and like I've said, serial 0/0 is joined to the bundle just fine, so we are running off one T1 connection.

The serial interface that is not working is: serial 0/1

Here is a show-run:

interface Multilink240
ip address 172.18.xxx.xxx 255.255.255.252
ip route-cache flow
ip ospf network point-to-point
service-policy output PhonesFirst
ppp multilink

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Router's LAN Facing Interface Becomes Up / Down Frequently

Nov 14, 2011

We have a 1841 Cisco router for one of our remote sites and we have the GRE over IPSec tunnel on it (with our datacenter router) for the connectivity. The LAN facing interface becomes UP/Down (status 'UP', Protocol 'Down'). When I login the router and 'shut' and then 'no shut' the interface, the interface becomes UP and everything starts to work. Traffic starts to flow across it. But after some time, some hours or sometimes some days, the interface is again back to up/down status. The router is connected to  a non-Cisco switch. I do see some CRC's increasing very slowly, but apart from that there seems nothing wrong with the interface in sho int fas0/0 command:

!
RTR01#sho int fas0/0
FastEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is Gt96k FE, address is 0026.cb91.ee48 (bia 0026.cb91.ee48)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Connecting To Hosted Websites

Jan 10, 2013

Here's my setup:

 - Cisco 1841 connected to the internet on fa0/1
- LAN connected to fa0/0/1 (switch port, connected to Vlan1)

On my LAN I have a web server that houses different websites. Those websites have DNS records that point to my public IP address, located on fa0/1. From the outside I can reach the websites perfectly, but I can't reach them from the inside. So it looks like I can't seem to connect from my local LAN address to the public ip address on the Cisco (who then should NAT it to the correct server)

Here is a snippet from my config:

--NAT--
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.3 80 interface FastEthernet0/1 80
ip nat inside source route-map Internet interface FastEthernet0/1 overload

--OUTSIDE INTERFACE--

--INSIDE INTERFACE--

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 Tunnel Without Default Gateway Not Connecting

Feb 12, 2012

I'm trying to configure an IPSEC VPN + tunnel for multicast data. When the default gateway is set on the router (1841) it works fine but if I only set a route to the IPSEC peer via our gateway then the tunnel fails to come up. The end point is to a 3rd party. [code]

I found that if I add a static route for the tunnel destination via fa0/0, the public facing interface, the tunnel comes up..ip route 10.23.4.2 255. 255. 255. 255 FastEthernet0/0

and I can then ping the tunnel IP at the far end - 10.23.0.5.Why would that be? Is there a better way to do this without using a default route??

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 - Connecting Two Vlans To 1 ISP Router Interface

Dec 19, 2012

I have two Catalyst 2960 Series (48 port) switches with the newest Cisco IOS installed. There is also a Cisco 2600 Series Router which I can't manage because it's ISP managed.

Now the problem is as follows. I'd like to create two VLANs, one in the IP range 192.168.0.xxx and the other in the 192.168.1.xxx. Now the router has a gateway IP address 192.168.1.1 .

Would it be possible to somehow connect these two VLANs with the router so that these 2 VLANs can't see each other but they can ofcourse both contact the router and exit on the internet?

Cisco WAN :: Connecting Two 1841 Routers Together

Feb 6, 2011

For educational reasons (a Videoconference class), I need to connect two 1841 router with each other. They both have HWIC-2T modules, but it's almost impossible for me to have the CAB-SS-2626X Smart Serial crossover cable on time. So, I was wondering if there will be some kind of a problem if I connect them through a UTP crossover cable using their FastEthernet interfaces. I suppose it will not "simulate" a serial wan connection but, would it work as a router to router connection?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 Existing Routers Do Not Have Enough Flash To Hold 2 IOS Images

Apr 2, 2009

I have 1841, 2800 and 3800 routers and need to do IOS upgrade to all of them.  Existing routers do not have enough flash to hold 2 IOS images.if the router has 12.4.13r ROM IOS, will I be able to boot the ISR router via Cisco brand USB?  That means in case something goes wrong while I am uploading new IOS to the router via WAN and something wrong, now router in ROMMON mode.  If a local site person has a Cisco USB with an IOS in it, can he just stick it to the router and reboot the router and router will go out of rommon and go into normal mode?  After it is working, then I can put the running IOS onto the exisitng CF card so now I can remove the USB and the CF card has a good IOS and reboot the router again.I am just trying to find a safe way to upgrade the site when they don't have big enough flash to hold 2 IOS at the same time.  The local person is not technical so asking him to setup tftp server and put the IOS in the computer and so I can do tftpdnld while in rommon mode to grab the IOS from his tftp will be difficult to have the local person to set it up.

If ISR can boot off of the IOS in USB only, then I assume the requiremetn is the ROM IOS needs to be 12.4.13r.  Then what is a safe way to upgrade the ROM IOS to this then?  I never upgrade ROM IOS before so don't know what kind of problem I may run into and whether it's higher risk to upgrade this than upgrading the regular ios?  If it is, then all my routers won't have this ROM IOS version, so that means I can't use USB to boot then?  Will that means I am down to tftp server option?  ( I heard xmodem won't work as it will time out before the ios can load via the slow dialup link into the router to rescue it from rommon mode).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Connecting Two Catalyst 3560 Routers?

Oct 15, 2012

Scenario:  Two buildings connected with a private leased fiber line, so it does operate as a LAN.  There are several subnets and everyone at both buildings needs to be able to access all subnets.  However the physical machines on those subnets are building specific:

-Building 1:  10.2.0.0/24 (vlan20), 10.4.0.0/24 (vlan40), Internet connection
-Building 2:  10.1.0.0/24 (vlan10), 10.3.0.0/24 (vlan30)

The majority of the traffic between the subnets is specific to the buildings as well (i.e. most of the traffic is between 10.1 and 10.3 or 10.2 and 10.4).

Currently I have a Catalyst 3560 at Building 1 operating as the single "core" L3 router (and then a variety of switches connected to that).  I have another 3560 at Building 2 that I'd like to turn in to the "master" L3 router for the two subnets primarily used by Building 2.  In other words, make it so traffic from 10.1 to 10.3 doesn't have to run to building 1 just to get back to building 2.

I've got a basic knowledge of adding VLANs, VLAN interfaces and a static routes.  The part that I'm getting confused on is that the Building 1 core router needs to make its default route to the firewall (and on to the internet) but "know" that traffic on vlans 10 and 30 gets sent across the fiber line to the other router.  So I'm assuming this gets done with some combination of vlan definitions, vlan interfaces and static ip routes on each router.

Cisco WAN :: Serial Interface On WIC-1DSU-t1V2 Down

Apr 28, 2012

I have a remote site that still utilizes a single T1 connection to me.  For multiple reasons we had to scrap the old T1 and have a new one put in.  The old T1 resided on a T3 as channel 25.  The new T1 is a standlone point to point.  I removed the old config from my 7301 and programmed my 3725.  I cannot figure out what is going on but the interface stays down/down.  There is no loopback turned on, either manually or by the carrier.  The AL LED stays amber regardless of whether or not I have a cable patched down.  The CD LED remains green when I patch a cable down.  LP is not light.I am using a straight through Ethernet cable to connect my 3725 to the smart jack.  If you look at the show output below you will see DCD and CTS is down. Since the remote end was working and I just had the tech move the patch cable from one smart jack to another I am assuming the problem is on my side or with the carrierI already tried changing the clock sourced between internal and line.  I also swapped out the WIC card for another one. I don't usually program T1 connections. [code]

When i swap the router with another router link is working working fine.

Troubleshooting steps taken

1.       Swap the serial cable with another working cable : no change in state

2.       Reconfigure the encapsulation commands (with PPP and HDLC) : no change in state

3.       Try with a decreased MTU packet Ping : no change in state

4.       Decreased the Input queue and increased the output queue size using   hold-queue in command : Comparatively the packet drop is reducing but still a 10 percent drop is happening.

Cisco WAN :: 3845-MB Dropping Pings To Its Own Serial Interface?

May 16, 2013

I'm having an issue that I can't quite understand. I set up a test lab to get familiar with EIGRP routing. I have a Cisco 3845-MB with 2 VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards.sh ip int brief shows UP UP status on all serial ports. I gave it an IP address but I'm having trouble pinging the serial interface IP. It's dropping pings to its own S 1/1/0 interface when pinging from console. I have known good T1 crossover cables 1&2 - 4&5.

Here is the "ip int brief" from 3845-MB

3845-MB#sh ip int brief
Interface                  IP-Address      OK? Method Status                Prot
ocol
GigabitEthernet0/0         unassigned      YES NVRAM  administratively down down
GigabitEthernet0/1         172.30.2.1      YES NVRAM  up                    up
Serial1/1/0:0              10.3.29.2       YES manual up                    up

Right now it's pinging itself at about 60 -90% success rate... and I can't figure out why it's dropping any packets at all. I have other issues with in the lab as well... but i think this might be my "core" issue. To make matters even more "weird" I've tried two different VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards and I drop pings with both of them.

Here is a sh run and a sh diag:
