Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 Existing Routers Do Not Have Enough Flash To Hold 2 IOS Images
Apr 2, 2009
I have 1841, 2800 and 3800 routers and need to do IOS upgrade to all of them. Existing routers do not have enough flash to hold 2 IOS images.if the router has 12.4.13r ROM IOS, will I be able to boot the ISR router via Cisco brand USB? That means in case something goes wrong while I am uploading new IOS to the router via WAN and something wrong, now router in ROMMON mode. If a local site person has a Cisco USB with an IOS in it, can he just stick it to the router and reboot the router and router will go out of rommon and go into normal mode? After it is working, then I can put the running IOS onto the exisitng CF card so now I can remove the USB and the CF card has a good IOS and reboot the router again.I am just trying to find a safe way to upgrade the site when they don't have big enough flash to hold 2 IOS at the same time. The local person is not technical so asking him to setup tftp server and put the IOS in the computer and so I can do tftpdnld while in rommon mode to grab the IOS from his tftp will be difficult to have the local person to set it up.
If ISR can boot off of the IOS in USB only, then I assume the requiremetn is the ROM IOS needs to be 12.4.13r. Then what is a safe way to upgrade the ROM IOS to this then? I never upgrade ROM IOS before so don't know what kind of problem I may run into and whether it's higher risk to upgrade this than upgrading the regular ios? If it is, then all my routers won't have this ROM IOS version, so that means I can't use USB to boot then? Will that means I am down to tftp server option? ( I heard xmodem won't work as it will time out before the ios can load via the slow dialup link into the router to rescue it from rommon mode).

Trying to copy the system image file from the sup-bootflash to a new 64MB ATA flash card. Yes the software can support the 64MB card.
The ATA flash card was formated successfully, however I cannot copy the system image to it so that it can boot after a power loss.
The command I tried was: console(enabled) copy sup-bootflash: slot0:
The source filename was typed in as shown in the Show Verison command. The result was: Error opening slot0: no such device.I suspect that I am missing something obvious as I am new to Cisco Switches.

I am trying to figure out how this works. I have an ISP device that connects to my 1841. ISP and fa0/0 hold the /30 WAN addresses. Fa0/1 hold one of the public IPs, lets say 1.1.1.1/29. Then the outside interface of the ASA holds 1.1.1.2/29. Now I have two routes in the 1841, one for default route going back to the ISP device, and a route for the 1.1.1.0/29 network going to the ASA.Now I have 4 more publics I can use 1.1.1.3 - 6. I do not want to assign these IPs to the servers, but yet just NAT them. I know this is possible, but cant figureI took an internal host and did a one to one static NAT from private to public. Packet tracer says my NAT rules are ok. Allowed all IP traffic for testing and still can't ping the server.

Blocking Ports don´t send BPDUs, but they can receive them from designated ports.Blocking ports, can it hold BPDUs?
I think that Blocking Ports only receive, analyse and then discard the BPDU.But, what happen if the blocking port receive a better o worse BPDU? in this case, must be the bpdu stored?

In order to do a flash upgrade on a 5510, is there any way to get the files from the existing flash onto the new flash before you replace existing flash? Is there an online procedure?

While I managed to connect to each router individually, I decided it was time to connect the routers together via serial; as I don't have any serial cables and need to buy some, what serial cables I need, as well as to ask whether I have the right cards in my router(s) that will allow me to do so.
I bought 3 1841 routers, and all have a 1 port serial WAN Interface Card (WIC 1-T); one router has 2 of these, and one router has a WIC-1B-S/T .. My question is, can I connect the routers with a serial cable via WIC 1-T, or do I need a 2-T

I have been asked to upgrade the IOS images on three 4506 switches with a single Supervisor IV engine in each to allow for SSH2 access. The current image is cat4000-i5s-mz.122-25.EWA.bin..I have uploaded cat4000-i5k91s-mz.122-25.EWA14.bin to bootflash on each Supervisor engine. The ROM on each SUP IV is 12.1(20r). I don't want to have to upgrade the ROM version. Will the cat4000-i5k91s-mz.122-25.EWA14.bin image retain all the current features of the current image and provide SSH2 support, without requiring a ROM upgrade? Each switch has 512 Mb of RAM.If this image will accomplish what I want, what are the commands used to select the new image from bootflash. I'm familiar with image updates on fixed chassis switches using the boot system flash command.

I was upgrading the newest software images on a c2950G switch. So i followed the step by step procedures from url...I removed the current flash that was on the switch and then for some reason typed reload. This started the switch up without the IOS. Make a long story short I am now stuck in switch: prompt mode and I am unable to use x-modem to transfer the newest IOS onto the switch. I am currently getting "no response remote system".

We currently have out T1 attached to a 5505. We have IPsec site to site tunnels that also terminate on the outside interface of the 5505.
We are getting rid of the T1 and bringing in a manged MPLS circuit which will run off of a 1841 ISR. I would like the 5505 to pretty much work as is with little change. Whats the easiest way to accomplish this? Of course the MPLS will come with new external IP.
Current Design ---> T1<------>[asa5505]<------->[LAN]
New design---------> Mpls<------->[1841]<------>[asa 5505]<------->[LAN]
Questions:
1. Whats the easiest way to drop in the 1841 without having to change all my ASA acl's.
2. How would I terminate my ipsec site to site tunnels on asa outside interface. Now that the WAN interface is on 1841 and not ASA how would I terminate the other side of tunnel? Can I leave my tunnel end points on ASA or do they now have to terminate on 1841?
3. How would I configue outside interface on ASA to communicate out 1841 MPLS?

Using a wireless connection, my PS3 struggles to hold the connection. It either times out trying to sign on to PSN or EA sports, or connects only to lose the connection shortly thereafter. My router is the AC1000 and I'm wondering if there is a specific setting that is required in the setup that I'm not aware of. My connections to all other devices are solid.

I have this 2801 in a critical environment. We had a brief power blip, and even though the router is on UPS, something happened. Anyway, after working with TAC, they determined the flash card had gone corrupt. Lucky for me I had a spare 2801 in my office, I grabbed that flash card and plugged it in and we're back up and going.
TAC sent me a new flash card. No matter what I do, I cannot get IOS to load on this thing! I am stuck in rommon. Here's what I've tried:
tftpdnld in rommon, times out. using another 2801 as a tftp-server. doesn't complete. using xmodem. ugh. never seems to get started. booting the router with a known good flash card, so I can get to ena, and "copy tftp flash".
have used tftpd32, Solar Winds TFTP server, What's Up Gold TFTP server, and open source tftp from sourceforge. With the tftp32, it always gets to exactly 73% download and then times out (it says, I have a feeling it's noty really a timeout). I have tried having the router and tftp server the only devices on a switch, i have tried the router plugged directly into the tftp server with a cross connect cable. No happiness. The open source tftp server reported (and I have to paraphrase, I am not near the router) "client does not support block number recount" or something like that. The client being the 2801.
The iOS file is about 45M. Someone asked me if the flash card was formatted...would that matter? would the tftp even start if it wasn't?
OK, I've gone on long enough. TAC is dispatching a new card AND 2801!

I need your input on how to appropriately introduce an N5K with Jumbo enanbled to a prexisting Core Network (Stack of Cisco 3750G Switches) without making any major alteration on the Core configs (everything is happy). The idea is to move two High I/O servers to the N5K during a transitional phase. I already have a fair understanding of what Jumbo-Frames are and what it does. Keep Jumbo-Frames within the N5K ONLY.
Conditions:
- Traffic is Data traffic, not storage/iSCSI
- The servers host our ERP applications and MySQL that is accessed heavily by users
- N5K to C3750G connectivity is a Port-Channel consisting of 4x1GB ports
- The servers are to remain on VLAN 2 (Data VLAN)
- The Core Switch is L3 and the boundaries reside here

I have configured a site to site VPN tunnel using my Cisco ISR 891 router. The tunnel connects between my network 10.88.10.0 to the remote network 10.210.65.0. When I ping the remote nnetwork my VPN tunnel comes up and all is well.
I have recently connected a second network to my 10.88.... network. The new local network is 192.168.0.0. I have now managed to get the two local networks pinging each other. I can also carry out RDP sessions between systems on both networks. Hence I am happy that both networks are communicating.
I used the Fastethernet Port 8 on my ISR 891 to physically connect to the new 192.168 network and then entered the appropraite 'Static Routes' on the 192.168 exisiting router(Netgear Router). Hence certain traffic arriving at the netgear will now be forwarded to Port FE8 on the cisco ISR 891.. See FE8 Port config at the bottom of this post. I have used tracert to ensure that the traffic does arrive at Port FE8,(192.168.0.235).
I cannot seem to ping any device on the remote 10.210.65.0 network from the 192.168 network. However, as stated above I can sucessfully ping the same remote device from the local 10.88 network. I must be missing something that allows the 192.168 traffic to use the existing VPN tunnel. I have added the following command to the IpSec rules for the VPN tunnel using the Cisco Configuration Professionla tool.
Permit 192.168.0.0/0.0.0.255 10.210.0.0/0.0.255.255 ip

I have several cabinets with top-of-rack N2K's attached to N5K's via FEX's. 9 cabinets with 2 switches each.
Recently I added 3 more cabinets to the mix, for a total of 12 cabinets with 2 switches each.
I can get into the new switches and see the FEX's and configure ports, etc. but no device I attach to the 'new' N2K's is pingable over the network. I can take the same device, same cable, and attach it to a legacy N2K talking to the same N5K's, and it immediately joins and is pingable over the network

I want to delete the first file c2600-i-mz.122-5d in the flash. Not only delete but also reclaim the memory held by deleted file.I followed a link and i ended up with the c2600-i-mz.122-5d marked as deleted in the flash but the memory was not reclaimed. When I restarted the router, it went to ROMMON mode. This is my understanding when router tried to boot from the flash, It tried to load the first file in the flash. Since the file was marked as deleted therefore Router went to ROMMON mode. Now my question is how could I delete the first file and reclaim the memory on 2600 router?

I had an issue today on a 4507r today where when I formatted the compact flash in slot0: (512mb) it caused the CPU to spike to 100% this took about 1.5 hours and did not cause adjacency loss or any thing, but was worrisome. This was a sup IV is this normal and should u let it complete like I did? Also when I copied the os to it from boot flash it caused the same behavior. I have done this a bunch in 6500 sup 720 without this issue?

Every time I delete the directory flash and reinstall it, I get an error:
Error loading "flash:c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-12c.EA1.bin"
Error loading "flash:c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-12c.EA1.bin" Interrupt within 5 seconds to abort boot process.
That is the message I get. It's set to NO manual boot, but it keeps making me manually boot it. I am at a loss, I've done 3 switches and they all keep doing the same thing.

I've a situation where I need to add a new 3750x to a existing stack of 3750. [code] When I tried to stack them together, I get a version mismatch error. Is this because of the difference in SW Image? What are my options next ? My ultimate goal is to make the new switch stack correctly with the exisitng switches.

We've recently inherited a platform with little handover and also minimal networking experience. We're going 100 miles an hour in learning, but I'm a bit confused with the idea of a L2 switch with no IP assignments to ports, so using VLANs, and a L3 switch with IP assignments. And the combination of both.We have 2 Cisco 3750 switches, along with a whole host of other hardware, so we're starting at this "gateway" to start breaking things down.

I need to add two additional 2960S switches to my stack. I saw a diagram that showed how a 4 switch stack can be connected, but I couldn't find much detail on adding a switch to an existing stack (besides master election). The output below shows how the existing stack is connected and its state
SW#sh switch detail
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 0011.2222.3333
H/W Current
[Code].....
I will need to break one of the stack rings between SW1 and SW2 in order to connect the new switches. Does it really matter which ring I break to connect the additional switches? Does one ring act as primary? If so, I'd rather not break that ring so this process is transparent as possible. Also, is there any benefit to disabling the stack port vs just disconnecting the cable?

The new switch is installed to be wired to the master switch. the swtich 3 (* 3 Master Ready 442b.036f.a800)my question is: if you disconnect the wiring from the master stack to connect to the new switch, it is possible that the new switch change the current configuration of stacking.
-Can I just add the new switch with clean configuration without changing the current configuration ?
-How is assigned the stack number? i need the new switch be with the GI4 / x?. I can I manually by assigning ports?
-If I want to the new 3750 member witch lower prioridad, can I change priority before adding to stack?

I recently tried to manually format the flash on a model WS-2960S-48TS-L switch running IOS version 15.0(2)SE. While executing the operation I got the following error - mifs[8]: Failed to create superblock %Error formatting flash (I/O error). As a result the flash is no longer accessible by the switch. I spoke with Cisco and they indicated that a switch reload would remount the flash and make it accessable again but the .bin file would need to be reloaded using the xModem recovery procedure (what a pain). The next IOS version 15.0(2)SE1 will supposedly fix this bug but it has not been released yet. In the meantime if you are running 15.0(2)SE you may want to hold off performing a "format flash:" function on a 2960S.
