I tired to upgrade the flash memory on my 871. I have tired to send single break and removing the flash card to drop the 871 to rommon. but no luck, all i get is the below error. I have try restart button on the back and get the same results. How to get the router into rommon mode so i can place the IOS on the flash ?
View 5 RepliesI have a 512MB USB Flash device and was able to boot the IOS on the C2960 from it.After that i tried to Copy the IOS file from the USB to the system flash, but it could not find the USB Device.At plugging in the device the systems tells me: "Transfer type 2 not supported" I configured the USB device in NTFS and FAT both are able to boot with the ROMMON, but the normal system does not accept them and i know i can do the copy over a TFTP from my laptop, but it is strange that rommon accepts the usb device and the system does not?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I tried to install c2960-lanbasek9.mz.12.55.SE4.bin onto my router. When I changed the boot commands, I did not leave the 2nd option in there and the old firmware has an .ex3 extension. After trying to boot to this new image, we receive a looping error message that continues to reboot and go through the same process.Basically the error is "ERROR: firmware not supported by hardware"I have power cycled it a few times but durning bootup, I never see the ################## which would allow me to BREAK sequence and get into rommon. The device simply waits about 30-40 seconds after boot and goes right back to the looping reboot sequence and the error message. Is there any hyper term or putty settings to change on this?

So I thought I'd upgrade to IOS-XE 3.2.0SG to hopefully resolve the issue. I was reading the software release notes and it says:
If you are upgrading to 3.2.0SG, you must upgrade your ROMMON to 15.0(1r)SG2.If they have dual supervisors, first upgrade your software to 3.2.0SG, then upgrade your ROMMON to15.0(1r)SG2 to avoid the resets uplinks issue (CSCtj54375).
And from the ROMMON release notes it says:
Download the cat4500+e-promupgrade-150_1r_SG2 program from Cisco.com, and place it on a TFTPserver in a directory that is accessible from the switch that is upgraded.The cat4500+e-promupgrade-150_1r_SG2 program is available on Cisco.com at the same location from which Catalyst 4500 system images are downloaded.
So I have several questions:
The only promupgrade file I can find is cat4500-e-ios-promupgrade-150-1r-SG2 (which doesn't appear to be the same as cat4500+e-promupgrade-150_1r_SG2 ). Where the correct file is?Since I have dual supervisors, it says I should upgrade the software, then the ROMMON. If I can do that (run the new software with the old ROMMON) why am I bothering to upgrade the ROMMON in the first place? (update, ok, I see the new ROMMON gives me enhanced crash info and will allow future upgrades without bringing down both supervisors at the same time).When these were ordered/installed, the licenses were all mixed up (I wasn't involved with that ). So the MDFs have dual sup 7e with ipbase and the IDFs have single sup 7e with enterprise services. Obviously, we want the enterprise services in the MDF so we can run OSPF and the ipbase in the IDF. But, OSPF seems to be running just fine in the MDF on ipbase. Are the licenses not enforced on these platforms? The release notes for 3.2.0 say ipbase doesn't support OSPF. So if I upgrade the MDF switches, will OSPF suddenly stop working?

I want upgrade my switches 2960-24PC-L RAM: 128MB and Flash: 28MB, but in the web page of cisco I see that the requirement of hardware is RAM: 128MB and Flash: 32MB.
I download the IOS file and this file is only 11.2MB so my question is if I can upgrade the IOS because my flash is enough for upload the IOS file.
I upgrade to a Flash 32mbs memory stick, as I reboot the 2600 Cisco router, it appear in the ROMMON mode, nonetheless, I followed some wrong procedure by changing components on the ROMMON command line. however now the router reboot or start with symbol only V2V2v2a, and I can no longer enter the ROMMON Mode or key anything in. I have a copy of the IOS on my TFTP server.

Trying to copy the system image file from the sup-bootflash to a new 64MB ATA flash card. Yes the software can support the 64MB card.
The ATA flash card was formated successfully, however I cannot copy the system image to it so that it can boot after a power loss.
The command I tried was: console(enabled) copy sup-bootflash: slot0:
The source filename was typed in as shown in the Show Verison command.The result was: Error opening slot0: no such device.I suspect that I am missing something obvious as I am new to Cisco Switches.
I was trying to erase some bad test configs on my 5505 with a write erase, but all VLAN and Ethernet configs remained. I hastily decided to do an erase flash. No I'm stuck at a ROMMON prompt with no image found to boot I'm hoping I don't have to TFTP a factory image. How do I find the images on disk0 and copy them?

"username USER password 5 SOMEPASS role network-admin"
It consistently outputs: "String failed to match token pattern at '^' marker." - always the carat is at the first character in whatever password I input. I've ensured passwords I input meet the conditions of "password strength-check" and I have also disabled this feature and repeated with numerous passwords to no effect.
Unable to enter global QoS commands on the 4500E chassis? We're using 12.2(53)SG. If I go to 'conf t', there is no 'qos' command. In the configuration manuals I've seen for the 4500, the following commands seem to be supported:

I have a catalyst 3550 and will be using it to run my cisco 7940 and 7960 ip phones with POE. When I plug the phones into the switch they power up just fine but the phones will not dial out as they have little x's by the line. I have also tried going through the set up of the 3550 but get stuck in one place. When I go to the 10.0.0.0, the screen will not allow me to enter the telnet page or allow me to enter any information. In the manual it shows a pic of what the screen should look like when I go to 10.0.0.1, but I am getting an entirely different page.
What I need to do to get everything set up correctly?
I have a Cat6506. There were 2 Sup 720 in it for redundancy. They told me they had problems with this thing in the past needing to go out and reboot the machine. I need to go out periodically because it goes into ROMMON. I type boot and it comes back up. One time though neither one would reboot. I had to take a third one out there and reconfigure it. Now it is starting to do the same thing. One thing I did notice is they never connected it to an UPS. It is plugged strait into the wall with power going to two outlets. I am beginning to think there are spikes in the power occurring and this is sending it into ROMMON.

A working 3560EStartup LED information. If I compare a working switch with the faulty switch I can see about 18 seconds into bootingSYST change very fast from green to amber and continues with booting,this doesnt happened on the faulty switch (solid green 18 seconds). Pushing MODE button, doesn't get me in to ROMmon, this works for all the other switches.On a normal 3560 it takes around 40 seconds before I get in to ROMmon. With this faulty switch it stops after 18 seconds(solid green) and it doesnt respond.
Could not find a valid file in BOOT environment variable. BOOT variable can be set from IOS. To find currently setRom Monitor variables, type 'set' command.

I'm trying to upgrade the ASR 1002 we just purchased and am having some issues (this is a new device and is not in service). I first tried upgrading the ROMMON using the upgrade rom-monitor filename bootflash:asr1000-rommon.150-1r.S.pkg all command, but the upgrade didn't seem to work completely. I'm currently pursuing to take my CCNA and am currently studying for it, but have recently encountered a problem with one of my 1760 routers that I can not solve.Yesterday I went to boot up my router like normal, however when I went into hyperterminal I noticed the router was in Rommon mode. Thinking I could change the configuration registry, I tried to bypass the NVRAM by using confreg 0x2142. However this still causes the router to go into Rommon mode. I am getting an error that states that there is insufficient memory to load the IOS image. [code]
I have used the dir flash: command and can see the IOS image, and try to boot from it (boot flash:iosimagename) but it will still go back into rommon mode. I also just swapped the RAM from my other 1760 into this 1760 and it booted up and went into normal configuraiton mode without any issues. However, the other router now will not load it's IOS image and I get the exact same error.I'm at a loss here, and have searched to figure out where or how I can just wipe the router clean to try and start fresh, but cannot get out or Rommon mode. The only thing I can think of is that the RAM went bad since it wont boot up either machine.
I have an issue with a customers 6503 with Sup-2T cards, where we are locked out of the console due to an authentication configuration error. So tried several times to get the card into rommon, with no success.
Checking through the various documents on CCO I dont find any reference to rommon on this card, but do find information on using the CMP to support the supervisor. I logged into the CMP but couldn't find a way from there to do a password reccovery either.So, is the `normal' IOS rommon/password recovery method supported.
I am facing a problem with a cisco 6509 that goes into rommon every time i restart. If i give the command
rommon 1> boot
it will pick up the IOS on the sup-bootdisk: or bootdisk: and boots up but i dont understand why on reboot it wont pick up this IOS and boot itself and why do i have to write boot command everytime on rommon.
I have also explicitly given the command "boot system bootdisk:IOSNAME.bin" in the startup config file but still no luck.

Then it got stuck in rommon, i tried using a 7200 pcmcia card (I downloaded the 7600 IOS there) but if i do from rommon boot disk0:
it complaints with :open: file "c7200-atafslib-m" not found so, it doesn't boot.
Anything I can do to be able to boot this device ?
I have a Catalyst 4506e that works fine but if reload, it boots in rommon mode. I can start it with a boot command, but by default, i must type a command. My config-register is 0x2102.
View 5 Replies View RelatedGot a long lingering, year long issue that has spanned about 8 supervisor cards and a complete chassis swap. The 6509 acts as a ITN in our facility. The active sup card at random points of pipe usage boots into rommon mode, seriously inhibiting our company. I'm able to swap the 2 fiber pairs that we had going into the active supervisor card into the secondary and usually this works for another random amount of time, however, today it occured within minutes of hooking up the fiber links. Sitting there for about 5 minutes it booted into ROMMON. When this happens, I'm able to boot the sup card back to good status. Previous remedial actions, other than replacing sup cards/chassis, was checking the config register and making sure it was x2102. Previously, it was not, and we corrected and reloaded and it took, we thought this would fix the problem, until today.

I have a 3550 switch that was replaced at a remote site with no IOS. This is a switch not a router so tftpdnld does not work.

The problem is the switches interface never comes up so try to connect to the tftp server. I read on google it can't be done on a switch to copy from tftp to flash in rommon mode on a switch and to use XMODEM. My problem is I do not have access to it, I ssh into a 3640 which is an access server for all devices and that is how I have console to it, how to use XMODEM over ssh.
But I'm fairly certain that there has to be a way to just copy it from tftp? I have a 3550 local and when I put it in rommon mode it stops the port check at port, port 1 goes from green when you plug it in to off then port 2 changes to amber and the rest green. So just by the look of this I would believe tftp would work; you just need to use port 1.
On my 6509-E, all the modules show this:
Region F1: INVALID
Region F2: INVALID
Currently running ROMMON from S (Gold) region
Is this alright? Is the Gold region like a default region where ROMMON is always installed. And are F1 and F2 just storage partitions that are available to hold backup copies of the ROMMON? From what I read, it sounds like I can copy ROMMON images to F1 and F2, either the same version as the Gold region or different versions. Is that correct? Why would I want to copy different ROMMON versions to F1 and F2?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to networking and need to migrate an old core to a new core. I have a 6509-e Switch that I had an RMA on one of my 720 sup cards. After receiving the sup card I swapped my slave out with the new one, expecting it to boot into ios. It booted into Roman. I tried to boot the image manually and it did the same thing. I also tried to boot from my flash and, again, booted into ROMmon.
Question: If i configure and change the boot to boot from image it tells me i need to reset or power cycle first. Will this reset the entire switch? As this is production I'd rather not.
I am at home now, but I can supply any logs/hardware model/configs tomorrow. I thought I would see if this is an easy fix.
