Cisco Switching/Routing :: Cannot Get Out Of Rommon Mode 1760
Dec 10, 2011
I'm currently pursuing to take my CCNA and am currently studying for it, but have recently encountered a problem with one of my 1760 routers that I can not solve.Yesterday I went to boot up my router like normal, however when I went into hyperterminal I noticed the router was in Rommon mode. Thinking I could change the configuration registry, I tried to bypass the NVRAM by using confreg 0x2142. However this still causes the router to go into Rommon mode. I am getting an error that states that there is insufficient memory to load the IOS image. [code]
I have used the dir flash: command and can see the IOS image, and try to boot from it (boot flash:iosimagename) but it will still go back into rommon mode. I also just swapped the RAM from my other 1760 into this 1760 and it booted up and went into normal configuraiton mode without any issues. However, the other router now will not load it's IOS image and I get the exact same error.I'm at a loss here, and have searched to figure out where or how I can just wipe the router clean to try and start fresh, but cannot get out or Rommon mode. The only thing I can think of is that the RAM went bad since it wont boot up either machine.
I have 6509 E. Actually what happen it last 3-4 times it reload its self and got stuck in rommon mode, i tried to boot it with boot by connecting a console cable on supervisor 720 2b. What and where is problem and why is stuck in rommon after reload.
I have a Catalyst 4506e that works fine but if reload, it boots in rommon mode. I can start it with a boot command, but by default, i must type a command. My config-register is 0x2102.
I have a 3550 switch that was replaced at a remote site with no IOS. This is a switch not a router so tftpdnld does not work.
[Code]...
The problem is the switches interface never comes up so try to connect to the tftp server. I read on google it can't be done on a switch to copy from tftp to flash in rommon mode on a switch and to use XMODEM. My problem is I do not have access to it, I ssh into a 3640 which is an access server for all devices and that is how I have console to it, how to use XMODEM over ssh.
But I'm fairly certain that there has to be a way to just copy it from tftp? I have a 3550 local and when I put it in rommon mode it stops the port check at port, port 1 goes from green when you plug it in to off then port 2 changes to amber and the rest green. So just by the look of this I would believe tftp would work; you just need to use port 1.
We have a cisco catalyst 6509 with Supervisor Engine . After power outage, the switch always start in Rommon mode. Configuration register is 0X2102, we want to it always start in normal mode. What should i do?
I have a 512MB USB Flash device and was able to boot the IOS on the C2960 from it.After that i tried to Copy the IOS file from the USB to the system flash, but it could not find the USB Device. At plugging in the device the systems tells me: "Transfer type 2 not supported" I configured the USB device in NTFS and FAT both are able to boot with the ROMMON, but the normal system does not accept them and i know i can do the copy over a TFTP from my laptop, but it is strange that rommon accepts the usb device and the system does not?
I have one cisco 4507R+E.My question is if the IOS of the acive SUP crushed and the switch is running through it's second SUP then how to restore the IOS of the first SUP.Also how to access the ROMON mode of the crushed SUP when switch is running through second SUP.
My FastEthernet 0/0 interface uses DHCP and got 172.16.2.126 /16. My Ethernet 0/0 interface is my internal interface, it has static 192.168.0.1 /24. On the Ethernet 0/0 interface, I have a PC attached, IP 192.168.0.150 /24.
The router's gateway is set to IP 172.16.1.1
My PC can ping 192.168.0.1 and can ping 172.16.2.126 (both interfaces of my router). My router can ping anywhere on the Internet. But my PC cannot ping 172.16.1.1. Firewall disabled, all security disabled.
For the past few days I've been attempting to configure a data T1 on a Cisco 1760, but I'm stuck at:
Serial0/0 <our ip address> YES NVRAM up down
To provide a bit of background. This router used to be configured with a T1 via Frame-Relay; which worked fine. Now we recently change offices and providers, and the provider did not offer any information as to which encapsulation type to use, and if Frame-Relay which DLCI to use, etc.
Now I've been trying to setup the T1 connection and testing various settings such as encapsulation HDLC and PPP, but no luck. I also played around with the line codes and framing; which resulted in the following framing sf int down, line prot down, framing esf int up, line prot down. Regardless no luck.
Now I've been following several guides and examples mainly the following: [URL] In this guide they make mention of a WIC-1DSU-T1-V2, but as you can see in the show diag snippet at the bottom; we have a WIC-1DSU-T1 version 1.5. I dont' know if this poses a problem for us.
Throughout the entire process I've seen a few irregularities for example:
1. Router(config-if)#service-module t1 cablelength short 110ft ^ % Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
The IOS doesn't recognize any command with service module t1 ca , and the only recognized command with C is clock.
2. If I enter the following list of commands under the serial interface:
! interface Serial0/0 ip address 10.0.0.51 255.0.0.0 load-interval 30 !
Although i can do a show service-module s0/0 I can see all of the configured parameters (see below)
Module type is T1/fractional Hardware revision is 0.128, Software revision is 0.2, Image checksum is 0x73D70058, Protocol revision is 0.1 Receiver has no alarms. Framing is ESF, Line Code is B8ZS, Current clock source is line, Fraction has 24 timeslots (64 Kbits/sec each), Net bandwidth is 1536 Kbits/sec. Last module self-test (done at startup): Passed
Got a problem with my 1760 router. Bought it from ebay and booted it on today and got this error,It has 180224K/16384K bytes of memory and 2 paritions of 32768K flash.I erased both partitions and put a different version of the IOS on (still 12.4) and there is no difference, still get the errors. These aren't on any of my other 1760 routers so I assume they are linked to the problem.
I've got a 1760 router which uses port forwarding (25, 80 and 443) for my internal network services. If, let's say, I try to open a FTP connection on the router, of course the connection will be refused. Is there a way to make the router DROP the packets instead of rejecting them? My Linux iptables configurations drop packets who fail the firewall test, so I would like the router to perform that behavior.Commands for port forwarding:ip nat inside source static tcp 10.10.0.1 80 int f0/0 80 (these work fine)
On new 1841 Testing Router, I deleted the flash & did the reload. After reloading, instantly I entered into the Rommon mode. I have a backup of the flash in my TFTP Server, which is connected to the 1841 Router. how can I restore my flash file into my 1841 Router. I can not get myself out of Rommon mode. I also now even can not ping the TFTP Server as well. Do I have to configure in the Rommon mode ?
how to restore the flash image via TFTP Server on my 1841 Router.
I upgrade to a Flash 32mbs memory stick, as I reboot the 2600 Cisco router, it appear in the ROMMON mode, nonetheless, I followed some wrong procedure by changing components on the ROMMON command line. however now the router reboot or start with symbol only V2V2v2a, and I can no longer enter the ROMMON Mode or key anything in. I have a copy of the IOS on my TFTP server.
I have a Cat6506. There were 2 Sup 720 in it for redundancy. They told me they had problems with this thing in the past needing to go out and reboot the machine. I need to go out periodically because it goes into ROMMON. I type boot and it comes back up. One time though neither one would reboot. I had to take a third one out there and reconfigure it. Now it is starting to do the same thing. One thing I did notice is they never connected it to an UPS. It is plugged strait into the wall with power going to two outlets. I am beginning to think there are spikes in the power occurring and this is sending it into ROMMON.
I upgraded four 3560E, 12.2(44) to 12.2(55)SEThree 3560 works fine, the last one stops after 17-18 seconds with a solid green LED. I cant get into ROMmon, the switch doesn't boot up. its like "dead but still alive"
My TS: 1: Removed all SFPs. 2: Reset PSU and fan modules. 3: Replace PSU and fan modules. 4: Try to get into ROMmon.(pushing mode button and break seq.) Startup LED:0-1 seconds: SYST: Amber RPS: Amber STAT: Green DUPLEX: Green SPEED: Green 1-17 seconds SYST: Blinking Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF 18 s--> (only testet up to one hour) SYST: Solid Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF
A working 3560EStartup LED information. If I compare a working switch with the faulty switch I can see about 18 seconds into bootingSYST change very fast from green to amber and continues with booting, this doesnt happened on the faulty switch (solid green 18 seconds). Pushing MODE button, doesn't get me in to ROMmon, this works for all the other switches. On a normal 3560 it takes around 40 seconds before I get in to ROMmon. With this faulty switch it stops after 18 seconds(solid green) and it doesnt respond.
Could not find a valid file in BOOT environment variable. BOOT variable can be set from IOS. To find currently setRom Monitor variables, type 'set' command.
Choosing a boot method, type 'confreg' command.rommon 1
I've ended up in rommon mode on my new"old" RMA'ed ASA5505, and I'm stuck there, I'v tried to erase Disk0 and all that, and tftp'ed a new image into the box, but when booting I get the message :
INFO: Unable to read firewall mode from flash WARNING: Unable to write firewall mode to flash, this is normal if flash is not formatted Running Activation Key: 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 This activattion key is invalid, use default settings only i2c_write_byte_w_suspend() error, slot = 0x0, device = 0x40, address = 26 byte count =1. Is it possible to use the mgmt port when in rommon mode? I use the Mgmt port when IOS is loaded and it works fine. I reboot the router, issue a break to put it in rommon and have set some variables but my Mgmt port never has link and I cannot ping it from the network. In rommon mode it looks like this:
I have an issue with a customers 6503 with Sup-2T cards, where we are locked out of the console due to an authentication configuration error. So tried several times to get the card into rommon, with no success.
Checking through the various documents on CCO I dont find any reference to rommon on this card, but do find information on using the CMP to support the supervisor. I logged into the CMP but couldn't find a way from there to do a password reccovery either. So, is the `normal' IOS rommon/password recovery method supported.
I am facing a problem with a cisco 6509 that goes into rommon every time i restart. If i give the command
rommon 1> boot
it will pick up the IOS on the sup-bootdisk: or bootdisk: and boots up but i dont understand why on reboot it wont pick up this IOS and boot itself and why do i have to write boot command everytime on rommon.
I have also explicitly given the command "boot system bootdisk:IOSNAME.bin" in the startup config file but still no luck.
I tired to upgrade the flash memory on my 871. I have tired to send single break and removing the flash card to drop the 871 to rommon. but no luck, all i get is the below error. I have try restart button on the back and get the same results. How to get the router into rommon mode so i can place the IOS on the flash ?
i have a Cisco 6513 it is used one, i have tryed to boot it but it did not work, it alwayes go to rommon mode and i am not able to know what is the issue,
when it boot i get the below outpot from the switch.

if it is possible to recover a Cat 6500 that has no code on bootflash from ROMMON, and is it mandatory to have a compact flash card to do the recovery ? or can one use xmodem or TFTP ?
I have ROM MON version 12.2(17r)S2 and I am trying to determine if I need to chnage this to 12.2(17r)SX7. It does not appear I need to with the upgrade to 12.2(33)SXI10. Is this correct?
I have a 7600 with ws-sup750 and when it boots it displays these errors:
Cisco IOS Software, s72033_sp Software (s72033_sp-ADVIPSERVICESK9_WAN-M), Version 12.2(33)SXH2a, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)Technical Support: [URL] Firmware compiled 07-Apr-08 22:12 by integ Build [100] 00:00:05: %C6K_PLATFORM-0-UNKNOWN_CHASSIS: The chassis type is not known.(0x6003)
[Code]....
Then it got stuck in rommon, i tried using a 7200 pcmcia card (I downloaded the 7600 IOS there) but if i do from rommon boot disk0:
it complaints with :open: file "c7200-atafslib-m" not found so, it doesn't boot.
Anything I can do to be able to boot this device ?
Yesterday I tried to install c2960-lanbasek9.mz.12.55.SE4.bin onto my router. When I changed the boot commands, I did not leave the 2nd option in there and the old firmware has an .ex3 extension. After trying to boot to this new image, we receive a looping error message that continues to reboot and go through the same process.Basically the error is "ERROR: firmware not supported by hardware"I have power cycled it a few times but durning bootup, I never see the ################## which would allow me to BREAK sequence and get into rommon. The device simply waits about 30-40 seconds after boot and goes right back to the looping reboot sequence and the error message. Is there any hyper term or putty settings to change on this?
