Cisco Wireless :: 1142 AP Randomly Disassociates Due To Watchdog Timer Reset
Apr 2, 2013
I am having a very peculiar issue wherein an 1142 WAP is randomly disassociating and powering down due to what the Trap log is calling a "Watchdog Timer Reset." The only way I can get it back up is to power cycle the AP. Currently the AP is being powered by a Cisco Power Injector. Is this a hardware of software issue with the AP itself? From what I read about Watchdog Timers it sounds like it could be. I posted below the Trap Log output after I power cycled the AP:

I have a 1142 that I purchased that needs to be set to factory defaults so that I can configure it. I do an escape at the boot sequence and I get to the
ap:
prompt, the reset instructions that Cisco provides says that I should rename the old config.txt and reboot and that I will then be able to start my reconfig. The problem is that I can't find a config.txt file in the flash space:
Directory of flash:/
2 -rwx 260 Jan 1 1970 00:04:28 +00:00 env_vars
3 -rwx 112947 Apr 1 2011 15:17:10 +00:00 event.log
5 drwx 128 Mar 1 2002 00:01:54 +00:00 c1140-rcvk9w8-mx

8 -rwx 5144 Mar 1 2002 00:00:27 +00:00 private-multiple-fs
I checked in the directories listed above and still found no config.txt.

We have an AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 deployed in a H-REAP setup. This AP already got the configuration from the WLC when it was deployed at a remote site. Now we moved it to another site, but it doesn't appear in the WCS and i don't see any CAPWAP debug messages on the WLC.The routing work fine between the AP and the WLC, the AP also gets an IP address from DHCP and also received Option 43 information.
Now my guess was that the AP doesn't associate with the WLC because it has the old config file and it runs in local mode(without trying to connect to the WLC).We want to reset to factory defaults because we want to delete the configuration and force the AP to get a new config from the WCS.I don't know the enable password so i had to use other methods for reseting to factory defaults.
I tried to use the information from here:[URL]I used the "MODE button":I get the following message from the console:
"button pressed for 5 seconds
process_config_recovery: set IP address and config to default 10.0.0.1"

I have a WLC5508 with around 70 AP's (LAP1042N) connecting over an MPLS WAN network. WLC and AP's are running 7.4.100
From time to time I have an AP which disassociates from the WLC with the logging beneath. This is a problem with the AP, or is this due to network saturation between the AP and the WLC ?
And if so, should I change the default retransmit values ?

I am working on a wlc 5508 in a lab environment doing snmp reporting & i was wondering if there is anyway to after the timing on how quick the snmp traps appear on the trap log page? I have looked through the gui but cant seem to find anything, so not too sure if there is a cli command, the traps come in very quickly on the nms way before they appear on the trap log page.

it's possible to implement that on any Cisco Wireless Devices, so All I need is create one wireless account with timer for 1 hour, so SSID as guest without any password and once you connected it works only for 1 hour then disconnects and you can't connect again. Then create second account where you can browse timelessly but you need a password to connect there.
1. Is it possible to do that using one or two SSID, or password changes?
2. Is it possible to do that on Wireless controller WLC2100 series, or AP1000, AP1100 series, or AP500 series?

I have a strange issue with clients connected to a WiFi network.I have configured AP in FlexConnect mode and 2 SSID's. After a reboot of the AP the network is stable for almost 45 mins. Then each client will go UP and Down, mostly with a delay of 5 mins.
What could be the source of this. The clients are Windows CE handheld with fixed IP adres. I already configure persitent client and have play arround with APR timers as well. Thereby an Windows desktop or an iPad has less connectivity issues but even they expert pakcteloss once in severall minutes.
Session timer is turned off
The iPad for example can play music, but each 5 mins you hear a little hickup and 2 subsecond ping are loss.
Controller version is 7.3

We have a non-cisco device peering with Cisco 6500 for bgp. The routing table is fully populated and connection is good. But after some time we see bgp hold timer error on the non-cisco device. This device by default has a hold timer of 90 seconds which is different from default cisco hold timer. Will this cause any disruptions to the network? If we change the hold timer on one device to match on both sides, will it reset the bgp session?

I have a working BGP session established. With "debug ip bgp events" I see many (2/3 every second) messages like this:
*Jul 23 11:23:48.773: BGP: default originate timer at max delay of 64 sec
*Jul 23 11:23:48.997: BGP: default originate timer at max delay of 64 sec
I can find nothing about this message. IOS version is 12.4(24)T and platform is Cisco 2811

I am having an issue on a Cisco 3750 stack where when the stack master is rebooted, all my lacp port-channels drop and then come back up again. After doing some investigation It seems that it is happening because of lacp using the stack master mac-address as part of the system-id, so when the stack master reboots, the stack mac changes. I see that there is the command: stack-mac persistent timer 0
There is this warning about using this command:
When you configure this feature, a warning message displays the consequences of your configuration. You should use this feature cautiously. Using the old master MAC address elsewhere in the domain could result in lost traffic.
My question are:
Are there any other consequences to using this command (apart from moving the switch/mac to another location in the network)It mentions 'If the entire switch stack reloads, it acquires the MAC address of the master as the stack MAC address' Is this still the case if you have the stack-mac persistent timer to 0? Does using channel-group mode on for the port-channels still use the same mechanism of having a system-id? (Will the channels flap using 'mode on' when rebooting the stack master.

I just converted AP 1142 to LAP using the image "c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar".
The WLC is a 5500 with 2 NIC : one on 192.168.0/24, one on a specific vlan 10.20/16
The main management interface is on 192.168/24 but we defined as management the interface on the 10.20/16 network.
For the access points, we use ports on a native VLAN on 10.20/16 with other available VLANS which are used for the wlan networks
We have 1152 APs which work fine on this config but that needed to be registered on the 192.168/24 network, then we moved them in their VLAN 10/20/16 and they work fine.
We also have 1142 APs which have been upgraded to LAP. These AP do not work with our architecture. They register correctly on the 192.168/24 network, but do not give access to the wlan VLANs. If they are moved in the 10.20/16 network, they don't register to the WLC (message : Timed out while waiting for ECHO repsonse from the AP). The AP do not get an IP.
is there a restriction with VALNs on these AP ? or is something false ?

I have an 1142 AP that I am unable to set back to factory defaults. Here is what I have done so far:
- boot AP while holding down the mode button
- ap: delete flash:private-multiple-fs
- yes
- ap: boot
- when the AP boots fully I try and enter any lwap ap commands and get "ERROR!!! Command is disabled"
- the AP name and password were reset to defaults but I am unable to get the IP address cleared.
I've also tried "clear lwapp private-config" and get an error saying the command is disabled.

When we take a look at the internal antennas on the 1142 AP, we notice the 5ghz pointed all the same way, but for the 2.4ghz we can see each offset by 45/120 degrees. It was my understanding that all antennas are omnidirectionals on the 1142, why are those 2.4ghz antennas not all pointed the same way? onfiguration advantage and that each antenna is indeed omnicadirectional? Example, if I shut just one antenna off, do I lose a sector (120degree)?

I recently purchased another 1142 AP to expand out our current wireless infrastructure, my question is, what exactly needs to be done for this to work so that users can roam freely and auto-connect to the closet AP with the best connection without getting disconnected?
I have set all the settings the exact same on the new AP to match the existing AP. (How to save the configs into a file would be great, I am not sure how to do that)... But anyhow, before I launch it, I would like to be sure I am correct so I do not bring down the existing network. Of course, the only difference between the 2 are the IP addresses. AP1 is 192.168.2.2 and AP2 is 192.168.2.3
All computers are using Linksys Wireless-N cards.

The last three new APs I have received from our supplier (official Cisco 1142 LAPs) have all successfully connected to our 4400 series WLCs but are all reporting as being in an Operational Status of 'Down' ie their A/B/G/N radios are not broadcasting even though the APs are all in an enabled state. Furthermore, there is no steady green light showing on the APs - there is no light showing whatsoever (although they were displaying the familiar red-orange-green lights while they were pulling down the IOS images from the WLCs).
The only strange thing I have noticed is that in the AP config screen, the ‘Mini IOS version’ is shown as being v7.3.x. The other – working APs – we have of the 1142 series show v3.x. I know that controller code v7.2 and above only work with the newer 5500 and 7500 series WLCs. Could this be the issue and have any of you seen this issue previously? I am running WLC code v7.0.230.0.

About every 20 minutes 12 of 300 APs keep rebooting. I have tried moving them to different controllers. I have tried downgrading the code and then upgrading the code. I have tried replacing the AP. I have tried swamping out cables. They are all connected to a 3750 stack but plugged into different switches in the stack. Here is the result that I could capture when I saw it disconnect from the controller. This is the output from the AP:
DTLS-5-SEND_ALERT: Send FATAL : Close notify Alert to 10.100.40.212:5246

*Jul 28 14:33:19.655: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Dot11Radio0, changed state to administratively down

I am a bit confused of the repeater functionality in the mentione AP, my concerns are:
1- Will each radio be dedicated to one function (for example 2.4 GHz for user access and 5.0 GHz for repeater functionality)?
2- Will the internet speed for users be affected when using the access point in repeater mode (no ethernet)?
3- Can an Autonomous AP function as a repeater?
4- Is there any license required?
5- What is the signal overlap requirements between the two Wired and non Wired AP?
6- Can the non wired AP be work as a repeater for another non wired AP (similar to cascading)?

I have recently been adding a number of installed APs to heatmaps in NCS and am very confused as to the correct Azimuth and Elevation settings.
In particular - if the AP is mounted on a wall rather than a ceiling what should the settings be ( and does it matter - perhaps - as NCS is now dynamic by default rather than the old WCS being predictive perhaps it does ).
Any guide for this covering the following common installation locations.
All referenced when looking at the map view in NCS, front of AP is the side with the Cisco logo and the status LED:-
1. AP ceiling mounted ( Backplate pointing out of map towards your eyes - front of AP pointing down to floor )
2. AP wall mounted ( front of AP pointing upwards towards the top bezel of the screen )
3. AP wall mounted ( front of AP pointing right towards the right bezel of the screen )
4. AP wall mounted ( front of AP pointing down towards bottom bezel of screen )
5. AP wall mounted ( front of AP pointing left towards left bezel of screen )

After some searching I see many people using power injectors or switches that supploy PoE. I am building a lab for the CCNA Wireless and currently have an old Cisco 3550 PoE switch and a 2106 Controller that I got at a steal of a price. My question is, The 1142 can use the 15.4 Inline Power from the 3550 even though it is not the 802.11af standard correct? If it doesn't then I will need to order a power brick.

I have an ipad that is not able to connect to a 1142 Autonomous AP. This AP was originally a light weight AP and then downgraded to autonomous.A strange thing i see is that the AP shows me only two radios. 802.11 N(2.4 GHZ) and 802.11 N(5 GHZ). I suspected the AP not to support the b/g networks. i then downloaded the most recent software but i still cannot get it to connect and on the AP's GUI i only see the above two mentionned radios. i tried to connect to two SSID's. one using WPA2 and another with open authentication and no security.but this does not work. Is it possible that some 1142 do not support b/g networks?
