Cisco Wireless :: AP541N - Preferred Mode To Maximize Network Speed?
Nov 7, 2012
Our wireless environment consitst of 5 AP541N's configured with 2 VAP's. 1 VAP is for our private network and the second for unsecured guest access. I am wondering what the preferred wireless mode is to maximize network speed? We only have N devices on our network and our mode is currently set to 802.11 b/g/n. Would 2.4GHz 802.11n be faster?
Does the Transmit Power setting have any effect on speed? Or just range? Any other settings on the Advanced Settings page effect network speed.

My Home/Small Business network now utilizes several D-Link products. It is comprised of a DLink 205 cable modem (old but reliable and perfectly adequate for the speed I get from my ISP); 2 - DIR-825 Dual Band WiFi Routers (Primary - Rev B1; Secondary - Rev A1); a DLink 5-port Unmanaged Smart Switch (GO series); an HP Proliant N54L Microserver with 6 internal and 2 external HDD's (total of 19TB); 4-5 workstations (HP Laptops); 2 - Brother Laser Printers/Scanner/Copiers; a Toshiba Thrive Android Tablet; an iPad Tablet; Android Smartphones; iPhones; and a large screen HDTV. The Modem, WiFi Routers, Switch, and Server are connected together with CAT6E ethernet cable. The printers are USB 2.0 to the server. The external HDD's are USB 3.0 to the Server.
When I measure transfer speeds of Large files (single 30GB iso movie files) between HDD's internal to the Server and USB 3.0 external <=> internal, I can achieve transfer rates of 140MB/sec - 150MB/sec. This is the limitation of 7200rpm HDD's. When I measure the transfer rate from the Server to a Work Station by CAT6E ethernet cable (25ft length) connected to the DLink 5-port gigabit switch, I measure transfer speeds of around 65MB/sec - 70MB/sec with a peak transfer rate of around 95MB/sec. This is ok but not as fast as other people seem to get. I would be hope to see rates in excess of 100MB/sec. Theoretical maximum for 1GB being 125MB/sec but the specs on the ports say they should operate up to 2GB (250MB/sec).
Wireless transfer rates are where I really am having trouble. Transferring the same 30GB iso movie file over wireless between two Work Stations or between a Work Station and the Server gives a maximum transfer speed of 7.2MB/sec and an average transfer speed of around 4.5MB/sec. If I am streaming multiple streams and trying to transfer a iso file, the transfer speed drops down to as low as 350KB/sec. This is too slow.
My network is setup to do Bare Metal Backups of the Work Stations. This can entail transferring up to 100GB of mixed files to the back-up drives on the Server for each Work Station. At 4.5MB/sec it takes just under 7 hours to back up the Work Station. If multiple Work Stations are backed up, it takes longer. Too Long to be realistic.
How to increase the transfer speeds on the wireless network? I have seen other people post wireless transfer speeds for their networks in excess of 13MB/sec. If I could get 7MB/sec or above when backing up all the Work Stations simultaneously. That would be doable.

Is it possible to use external antennas on AP541N set in WDS mode? I would only need to use 802.11g mode 54mbps.I believe that the antennas shipped with the access points are removable RP-SMA.

We have 3 AP541N units deployed in a doctors office. All of them are set to 802.11b/g/n mode. 2 of these units are used to provide non-secured internet access to patients and are using channel 7. The other AP is for our private network secured using WPA2/AES operating on channel 1. There are several other access points in our proximity using channel 6 and I'm trying to minimize interference. When selecting wireless mode 802.11 b/g/n I have only channels 1-7 to choose from. What I really want to do is change our public wlan to use channel 11 to avoid the other business's AP which are using channel 6.
Should I be using a different mode altogether? In your expereince which mode will provide the best transmission rates and range?

The automatic connection to the preferred network (with a strong signal) does not occur immediately. When I choose it in the list of preferred networks and click on 'connect' (with the password present of course), a message appears stating that the computer is connecting to the network. However, after some time nothing happens and the message terminates. There is no other information given (e.g. 'the computer failed to connect..."). After up to 15 mins or so, the network connects automatically (not sure if this has anything to do with turning the router off and on, restarting the computer, turning the wireless adaptor off and on....)

When starting my laptop it no longer connects to the preferred network. It has been trying to connect to my neighbors unsecured network. I have tried the netsh settings but it searches for another network and will not connect to the one it is supposed to unless I force it to.
E4200 connects to wrong network.

How do we begin troubleshooting a wireless device accessing the network that a user is complaining slow accessing network recources? We are getting complaints that it is slow, when connected to internet we get about 20 MB. There is only one user connected.
We switched to 2.4 GHz 802.11n from 802.11 bgn, but are told that did not work. We also have it on its own VLAN.

We have two Cisco AP541N running our wireless network in the office. They're configured with the same SSID, so that people are automatically switched between the two access points depending on their location in the office.
Frequently we are experiencing very poor performance of our wireless connections and it seems to be related to when 4-5 clients are connected to one access point. After restarting it (which also moves the 5 clients to the other access point), the performance problem goes away for a while.
I've upgraded one to firmware version AP541N-K9-2.0(1) (the other is running AP541N-K9-1.8(0)), but it doesn't seem to work.

Our wireless clients that connect through our AP541N cannot see other computers on the network. They can ping other computers by IP and host name and access the internet OK. Mapped network drives can be connected initially but are very unreliable and always end up disconnecting. Restarting the computer does not work. When these computers are wired they see the network as expected. why my wireless network would behave differently then the wired? The wired and wireless networks are on the same VLAN. The wireless clients are all Windows 7 systems.

I am not getting anywhere near the same download speeds to my wireless laptop as my wired desktop? When I run the Xfinity speed test on my wired desktop I get anywhere from 18MB to 40MB downloads. But the same Xfinity speed test to my Wireless connection to my Dell laptop [G adapter] never gets above 15MB.Is there a checklist anywhere I can use to maximize my wireless speed to a [G adapter] wireless device?

I bought two E4200s with the intent of using the second as a wireless access point to maximize coverage throughout my house. I just learned the hard way that the E4200 doesn't support that feature, and will only act as an access point if physically connected to the primary router that is connected to the internet.
Before I spend even more money on equipment, I was wondering if any of the experts here can tell me whether I can use a Linksys Bridge, like the WET610N or WES610N, to operate the second router in bridge mode and turn it into a wireless access point?

I have a d-link dsl modem that reports it's getting the full 6 meg download speed from AT&T. I put the dsl modem in bridge mode so the E4200 will do the logon to AT&T with my credentials. If i do a speed check using CNET internet speed test, from both a desktop (wired 1gb card) and any laptop in the house (all draft n 2.4 or 5.0), it ranges anywhere from 3 meg to 4.3 meg. I have 6 cat-e ethernet cords everywhere. I do have 2 switches but have tried to unplug those to see if any difference

I am in a situation where I share internet access with roommates. We have a Gateway which is conected to the provider and which delivers ethernet and WiFi signal.
In order to isolate myself from my roomates and to protect my network connection, both wired and WiFi, I would like to plug in the Ethernet cable I get from the Gateway to my router, and then configure my router's firewall and WiFi enctryption to maximize my safety.
However, I am having some problems. I have already configured the router as "router" and not "Gateway" and I am trying to assign it an IP address different from the default one, which is the one the gateway has, and a ranger of DHCP IP's, also different from those of the Gateway. In other words, 192.1681.N.1 for the router and start from there.

I just purchased my new router and I am wanting to know the best settings to use to get the best performance from it. I am a pretty novice user, I know just enough about computers to get myself in trouble. I plan to have several devices hooked up to it, but obviously not all running at the same time. Below are the items that I plan to have connected to it:

I sometime go to a nearby cyber cafe to access internet. There 10 pcs are connected via lan. Each system independently gives a download speed of 200 kbps. I often download softwarer and videos there. Is there any software or hack by which i can kinda suck the bandwidths of systems that are idle to maximize my download speeds..? I use IDM as the downloader.

My internet connection has been a little crappy lately, I've done all the things people said, scan for viruses, clean with ccleaner, defragment, get rid of unneeded services and processes. Is there a way I can tweak the settings of my browsers so they load pages and videos faster? I have used AVG Pc tuneup and there was an option to speed up the internet in my browsers: Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 9 by getting rid of some things in the browsers. I forgot what those things were.

Ok so even though this isn't really needed, it's for a 10 user office I have two tower servers with dual nics but not the same brand (just bought a cheapy gigabit startech) to go with intel on board nic. Also my switch is also gigabit which is a trendnet teg-s24dg which does not support link aggregration.
But since I have two nics and both servers are running win2008 enterprise I want to use the other nics for throughput if possible. So to give an idea servers are doing DC/AD and fileserver DFS rep. If I turn one off the other picks up and network still functions (there is a small lag since dns has to pick up that other is not responding. So far the best I can think I can do with the extra nic is add ip's to second nics and add to dns and round robin or install NLB role to for two server cluster.
I can't really team them since they are two different brands, so what would you do or do you suggest I can do with them. Also I have a T1 and dsl going into a dual wan firewall dsl is not being used for anything. (might use it for a seperate wifi network if people need it.

How can i prevent my Vodafone usb stick device to enter in 3G mode when the network is very low usage or not at all. If i open google for example, it turns automatically on HSUPA mode with a better speed, but if im doing nothing after 1min or so it goes back on 3G more slower speed. So the 3G / HSUPA mode is auto switched depending on demand based on how much speed is needed at that moment. I am playing an online game and the network usage by the game when im inside playing it, is not in that range to trigger the HSUPA mode, and just stay in 3G causing me to have lots of lag, is there a workaround for this so when im playing the game to be connected with HSUPA instead of 3G? ( i was thinking about some kinda of slow trafic generator that generates a litle trafic continuously to trigger that HSUPA mode while im playing, but not sure if is possible and also not too much to affect my conection speed which is slow anyway on a mobile) You can see in the picture, the ping on google while its both modes, as u can see 3-5times ping increase while its on 3G. Every "once in a while" (about a week with my network load), the SG300 crawls to an almost standstill of all IPv4 activity (haven't got IPv6 enabled here yet, so I can't comment wether this applies to IPv6 as well). It seems pure L2 transmissions is not affected, but L3 definitely is (down to 20mbit as opposed to the 600+ rate I usually get).
Soft-rebooting the switch (via the webgui) useful, and the intervals of the crashes seem related to total bytes transmitted, not time. I have jumbo frames enabled, and disabled flow control on on the switch and all hosts.

There are two kinds of time for assinging IPv6 address from DHCP server.Actaully Catalyst 3750X can do this role. however I am not sure about the difference between Valid lifetime and preferred lifetime. In my understanding the valide lifetime is total lifetime for using the assigned IPv6 address but the prefered lifetime when the assinged IPv6 address is expired at the prefered lifetime then the device may generate extended request or something right?

Region : India
Model : TL-MR3420
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 3.12.21 Build 120523 Rel.37880n
ISP : Reliance
I've just set up a MR3420. It works fine in "WAN only" mode and provides access via our ADSL modem. It also works fine in "3G only" mode and provides access via a Reliance Netconnect+ USB modem (a Huawei E150 I think). I updated the firmware to the latest version in order to get it to work with the USB modem.
The problem I have is that when I set it to "3G preferred" it doesn't seem to connect over 3G. I can see it tries to connect but then fails and then WAN takes over. The connect and disconnect options are greyed out on the 3G page so I am unable to manually get it to retry. I've tried leaving it for a long time but it doesn't seem to connect over 3G ever. I've tried setting 3G to connect on demand and connect automatically but both behave the same.

I have 2 AP541N access points. Have been working well for a couple of years. Later last year they just dissapeard from CCA one day. COundt access them but they were still delivering 'wireless' so to speak I have recently put them back to defaults to try and get them back in to CCA. i had one, but not the other. They would work fine via GUI/web access. Then i updated them to 2.0.4 (both images) and since doing that i have no access to either of them via any form.

I mistakenly mis-configured "Management ACL mode" on my AP541N.
Administration>Administration Access Control>Managment ACL Mode
I set this to "Enabled", the problem is I only entered 1 IP address, and that IP address is the SAME IP as the AP's own internal interface. I was not thinking and entered that IP out of habit when I meant to enter my workstation's IP. The FW does not have a safeguard against this.
So, as you can see, this is a big problem, because now I have completely cut off all access (That I can think of) to the router. I can never access the AP as that IP because if I set my workstation to that IP, 1) There will be an address conflict, 2) My computer won't route traffic to the AP out its NIC because it recognizes that IP as itself.

As I posted about in the other AP541N thread about degraded performance, mine did a strange client disconnect last week. It dropped all authenticated clients, but they all thought they were still connected. A quick disable/enable of the wireless card on the laptop would get the computer back on the AP.
This same thing happened again today.

we have two AP541n APs that were clustered togehter. They are powered using PoE. The other day I discovered one of them wasn't working properly. I couldn't log into it from the web interface so I unplugged it and plugged it back in from the PoE switch. That didn't work. Since then I have taken it off the network and have tried to reset it and I still can't access it. I've tried connecting to it from the default IP, which according to the admin guide is 192.168.10.10, and that doesn't work. I have tried using Telnet and SSH to connect to it using the default IP and the static IP we had set for it. I have set up a little linksys router and plugged the AP and a laptop into it in hopes it might get DHCP, but that hasn't worked either. I have also noticed the WLAN 2.4G and WLAN 5G lights are not coming on. The PWR, SPEED, and LAN lights all come on. The DIAG light comes on when it's furst plugged in and then turns off. Right now it is not plugged into PoE so that light is off too. We had both APs plugged into an ESW-520 that was plugged into a UC560 which had recently been updated to the latest firmware: 8.6.1. The short story is I don't have any connectivity to my AP541n, even after being reset. No wireless, no Web GUI, no ping, nothing. Has this thing become a large paperweight?
