I just purchased my new router and I am wanting to know the best settings to use to get the best performance from it. I am a pretty novice user, I know just enough about computers to get myself in trouble. I plan to have several devices hooked up to it, but obviously not all running at the same time. I bought two E4200s with the intent of using the second as a wireless access point to maximize coverage throughout my house. I just learned the hard way that the E4200 doesn't support that feature, and will only act as an access point if physically connected to the primary router that is connected to the internet.
Before I spend even more money on equipment, I was wondering if any of the experts here can tell me whether I can use a Linksys Bridge, like the WET610N or WES610N, to operate the second router in bridge mode and turn it into a wireless access point?
My internet connection has been a little crappy lately, I've done all the things people said, scan for viruses, clean with ccleaner, defragment, get rid of unneeded services and processes. Is there a way I can tweak the settings of my browsers so they load pages and videos faster? I have used AVG Pc tuneup and there was an option to speed up the internet in my browsers: Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 9 by getting rid of some things in the browsers. I forgot what those things were.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am in a situation where I share internet access with roommates. We have a Gateway which is conected to the provider and which delivers ethernet and WiFi signal.
In order to isolate myself from my roomates and to protect my network connection, both wired and WiFi, I would like to plug in the Ethernet cable I get from the Gateway to my router, and then configure my router's firewall and WiFi enctryption to maximize my safety.
However, I am having some problems. I have already configured the router as "router" and not "Gateway" and I am trying to assign it an IP address different from the default one, which is the one the gateway has, and a ranger of DHCP IP's, also different from those of the Gateway. In other words, 192.1681.N.1 for the router and start from there.
I sometime go to a nearby cyber cafe to access internet. There 10 pcs are connected via lan. Each system independently gives a download speed of 200 kbps. I often download softwarer and videos there. Is there any software or hack by which i can kinda suck the bandwidths of systems that are idle to maximize my download speeds..? I use IDM as the downloader.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOk so even though this isn't really needed, it's for a 10 user office I have two tower servers with dual nics but not the same brand (just bought a cheapy gigabit startech) to go with intel on board nic. Also my switch is also gigabit which is a trendnet teg-s24dg which does not support link aggregration.
But since I have two nics and both servers are running win2008 enterprise I want to use the other nics for throughput if possible. So to give an idea servers are doing DC/AD and fileserver DFS rep. If I turn one off the other picks up and network still functions (there is a small lag since dns has to pick up that other is not responding. So far the best I can think I can do with the extra nic is add ip's to second nics and add to dns and round robin or install NLB role to for two server cluster.
I can't really team them since they are two different brands, so what would you do or do you suggest I can do with them. Also I have a T1 and dsl going into a dual wan firewall dsl is not being used for anything. (might use it for a seperate wifi network if people need it.
My Home/Small Business network now utilizes several D-Link products. It is comprised of a DLink 205 cable modem (old but reliable and perfectly adequate for the speed I get from my ISP); 2 - DIR-825 Dual Band WiFi Routers (Primary - Rev B1; Secondary - Rev A1); a DLink 5-port Unmanaged Smart Switch (GO series); an HP Proliant N54L Microserver with 6 internal and 2 external HDD's (total of 19TB); 4-5 workstations (HP Laptops); 2 - Brother Laser Printers/Scanner/Copiers; a Toshiba Thrive Android Tablet; an iPad Tablet; Android Smartphones; iPhones; and a large screen HDTV. The Modem, WiFi Routers, Switch, and Server are connected together with CAT6E ethernet cable. The printers are USB 2.0 to the server. The external HDD's are USB 3.0 to the Server.
When I measure transfer speeds of Large files (single 30GB iso movie files) between HDD's internal to the Server and USB 3.0 external <=> internal, I can achieve transfer rates of 140MB/sec - 150MB/sec. This is the limitation of 7200rpm HDD's. When I measure the transfer rate from the Server to a Work Station by CAT6E ethernet cable (25ft length) connected to the DLink 5-port gigabit switch, I measure transfer speeds of around 65MB/sec - 70MB/sec with a peak transfer rate of around 95MB/sec. This is ok but not as fast as other people seem to get. I would be hope to see rates in excess of 100MB/sec. Theoretical maximum for 1GB being 125MB/sec but the specs on the ports say they should operate up to 2GB (250MB/sec).
Wireless transfer rates are where I really am having trouble. Transferring the same 30GB iso movie file over wireless between two Work Stations or between a Work Station and the Server gives a maximum transfer speed of 7.2MB/sec and an average transfer speed of around 4.5MB/sec. If I am streaming multiple streams and trying to transfer a iso file, the transfer speed drops down to as low as 350KB/sec. This is too slow.
My network is setup to do Bare Metal Backups of the Work Stations. This can entail transferring up to 100GB of mixed files to the back-up drives on the Server for each Work Station. At 4.5MB/sec it takes just under 7 hours to back up the Work Station. If multiple Work Stations are backed up, it takes longer. Too Long to be realistic.
How to increase the transfer speeds on the wireless network? I have seen other people post wireless transfer speeds for their networks in excess of 13MB/sec. If I could get 7MB/sec or above when backing up all the Work Stations simultaneously. That would be doable.
Our wireless environment consitst of 5 AP541N's configured with 2 VAP's. 1 VAP is for our private network and the second for unsecured guest access. I am wondering what the preferred wireless mode is to maximize network speed? We only have N devices on our network and our mode is currently set to 802.11 b/g/n. Would 2.4GHz 802.11n be faster?
Does the Transmit Power setting have any effect on speed? Or just range? Any other settings on the Advanced Settings page effect network speed.
Is the Linksys E4200 Dual Band Router compatible with DHCP and VPN?

I cloned the MAC Address and the Stus of the Router displays my current IP's (so I should have Internet). However, when I plug my computer into the Router I get no internet access.

It connects via ethernet for internet and has a coax to transmit the guide data etc.So my idea was to just leave the Verizon router connected and on (with wi-fi off) so it could do the TV stuff and just plug my router into the ethernet wall port the Verizon guy installed.Not so easy of course, my E4200 will not recognize the ethernet from my ONT (I think that's what the device they put in my basement is called) and the internet doesn't work. I have factory reset the router.The reason I am doing all this is because the wireless range of the e4200 at 2.4ghz is near unmatched and given my house, the actiontech cannot reach my room.

The media server works fine but after a while i loose contact with the router and the server this means that the Cisco connect doesn't work, the 192.168.1.1 doesn't work and I can't find the disk via \. I do have internet connection via wifi as im using it now....why I loose connection to the router? The lease time is 24h and it can happen more than once in a day.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI noticed some serious random ping spikes in online games and found that the connection between my Laptop and the E4200 is very very unstable. Sometimes it works perfectly fine but at other times my ping will spike each 5 seconds to three or even four digits and back to normal. I never get disconnected but playing is obviously not possible.
I ran several pingtests through pingtest.net and got everything from 15ms ping 3ms jitter to like 400 ping 300 jitter.
Eventually, I pinged the router (192.168.1.1) and got delays between 2ms and 300ms for both the 2.4 ghz and the 5ghz network. The 2.4ghz channels are fairly crowded but the signal is perfectly fine and stable. The 5ghz band is totally free therefore interference shouldn't be a problem i guess.
I have recently purchased a WD My Book Live and connected to my E4200 Router. I am trying to access this device using FTP from outside my local network. I did all required setting but with no success. I am able to connect to this using FTP from within my Local network. I used nmap to find scan the ports and it says port 21 filtered.

The VPN client cannot connect unless I either (a) bypass the E4200 and connect directly to my cable modem or (b) disable the SPI Firewalls on the router. I have all the VPN passthroughs set to "enable" on the router, but still cannot connect. The VPN client is using IPSEC over TCP on port 10000.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a recurring issue with my e4200v1. My wired and wireless connections work fine, but I can't get to the administration website. I have https only set up, and after I get thru the 'certificate error' screen, I get an error that says web page is unavailable. Firfefox tells me that the connection was lost - error 101.I have tried wired and wireless, multiple computers, multiple browsers. I even turned the firewall off on one computer (or I think I did anyway).The only way I know how to fix it is by completely resetting then setting up the router all over again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from WRT610N to E4200. Since upgrading to latest firmware the wan just disappears both 5 and 2.5 Ghz bands. Happened with older firmware but not as often. Using it in briged mode. When this happens I can't even get to the management page with a lan connected pc. Have to do a hard reboot to get it to respond again. This is unacceptable for a router at this price point.

I am having trouble connecting Cisco E4200 to Mac desktops on WAN/LAN. I can connect to the LAN at all locations with my own laptop through the LAN port, but not the WAN anywhere at the location on laptop or Mac. The WAN is letting me connect and enter the password but does not allow me to surf the internet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Windows 7 system and a Cisco E4200 router. Previously, I had an old Linksys WRT54GS router with an HP 1022NW connected to the network. The HP printer has worked flawlessly all these years and did not even hiccup when Windows 7 came into play. But as soon as I changed out my router, the trouble started. I cannot for the life of me get these two devices to connect.Is the HP1022NW even compatible with the E4200 router when using wireless connections? I know you are supposed to match the settings, but the encryption types are different For example, the default router settings are mixed WPA/WPA2. Previously I had WPA-PSK, which is not an option on this new router. I have followed every instruction I can find in manuals and online to get the wireless connection working, but it either fails the installation, or it latches onto my neighbor's wireless signal, which is not nearly as strong as mine. I believe he has his router set to WEP, which seems to point to the encryption question above. Short of connecting this as a hard wired printer, is there any chance I can get this to work? I have tried resetting it to factory conditions and even that does not work.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a new E4200 router and downloaded Cisco Connect from the web site...file name CiscoConnect.E4200.1.4.11160.2.exe. When I try to run it, I find through Task Manager that Setup.exe is using about 35 to 40% CPU, but I'm never even getting to anything on the screen, nor is Task Manager even showing it as a running application. I'm running Windows XP SP3 (latest updates). I tuned off the AVG virus scan. But it still just seems to hang. BTW, I used the web interface to fully configure the router and it works fine so I could get by without Cisco Connect, but it might just be easier to use.

Same hard drive directly connected to my Mac Book Pro Unibody produce 30MB/sec. However my internet connection thru the router fairly shows 12MB/sec.It sounds funny, but for me is 4 times faster to download file from the Web rather the from hard dive that I'm holding in my hand.

my router is: Cisco E4200
I have set up three E4200 routers as wireless access points on our network. They each have a static ip and the same subnet mask and gateway that our pcs have. They also have a local address that I can connect to if wired straight into them.
I cannot ping or remote admin into any of them and I have enabled all the options to do so. The routers seem to work fine as WAPs, providing internet and network access.
My wireless connection for 2,4 GHz stopped working correctly. Here's the set up:
I have an E4200 Linksys router. Furthermore I have a desktop running on Windows7 connected to the router with a wire. No problem there. I can connect to the Intenet via the E4200 and a modem.Then I have a notebook also running on Windows7. Until yesterday it was wireless (2,4 GHz) connected to the router and to the Internet, but now I can see the router on the networklist (so there is connection), but it will not make contact to the Internet. If I hook up the notebook with a line to the router it works OK.Then I have an iPad which makes a wireless connection to the Internet (via the router) for the 5 GHz option, but it does not make a connection with the 2,4 GHz option anymore (before yesterday this worked well). I did not change any settings on the Linksys or other network options, Can an update from McAfee make a difference (only for 2,4 GHz?).
