Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 - Separate DHCP Server Required To Get Option 43 Setup Properly?

May 7, 2012

I am using a WLC 5508 and its internal DHCP server. I cant find anywhere I can setup option 43. However, the access points are connected in just fine. Do I need to worry about setting up a seperate DHCP server to get option 43 setup properly?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Client Stuck In DHCP Required State

Aug 31, 2011

User is connecting to 5508, running 7.0.116.0.  Previously worked on another AP.  TV (client) is set to use dhcp.  As other posts have mentioned, "DHCP Addr. Assignment" checkbox is not checked for this wlan, but I also switched it to Required for this wlan but it did not make any difference.  Seems to be a problem with just this client as many other clients are on this AP with no problems.

Users have to register their MAC to get on our wireless system, but there is no encyption or security enabled once the device has been registered.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 - Second DHCP Server For Second SSID?

Apr 22, 2012

I have Internal DHCP Server configured on the Cisco WLC 5508 and all is working fine.  DHCP Range is 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.245. Now I created another SSID but I want clients connecting to this SSID get specific IP's or from a specific range.  WLC has no option to bind a DHCP pool to a specific IP so what I did I checked the option to "Override DHCP" and added the IP of my firewall WLC is connected to and setup a DHCP Pool on that firewall as 192.168.1.89 to 192.168.1.94 (192.168.1.88/29).

Client can connect to the second SSID but can't grab and IP address, what am I missing ?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 / Clarification On DHCP Server For WLC?

Apr 10, 2013

Recently I came across a wireless design whcih I ws not able to understand. The design is:

1. Two wireless LAN Controllers 5508, each with 25 AP license. AP load (5APs per Contorller) shared between the WLCs and congured with Backup Controller option.

2. The design has a Data Center Switch 3560x series, on which the two WLCs, Cisco Prime Infrastructure and Cisco MSE were connected. I've attached the design here.

3. The Data Center Switch is configured with DHCP pool for the wireless clients. The IP Address of the Data Center Switch is : 10.xx.xx.2 and Default Gateway is: 10.xx.xx.1

4. On the WLC, the Management Interface is configured with the IP Address: 10.xx.xx.21 for Controller 1 adnd 10.xx.xx.22 for Controller 2. But, their DHCP Server is configured with IP Address: 10.xx.xx.1 but not with 10.xx.xx.2 .

This means, all the DHCP requests are pointing towards the Gateway of the Data Center Switch. Is this the correct configuration?I have seen the Wireless Clients getting the IPs allocated from the DHCP Pool, even though the Management Interface's DHCP server configured with  Gateway IP address 10.xx.xx.1 .

The DHCP configuration for the Data Center Switch is:

ip dhcp pool xxxxxx
network 10.164.220.0 255.255.254.0
default-router 10.164.220.1

The Management Interface configuration on the WLC is:

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 Internal DHCP Server

May 7, 2012

I am hoping to get your feedback around the dhcp issues I am facing with Two Centrally Switched Wireless LANs. The setup is as follows:

- I have a WLC 5508 which has been configured with 4 SSIDs, out of which 2 are using Central Authentication and Switching. - I have an LWAP connected to the WLC in HREAP mode. - WLC is configured as the DHCP server for clients connecting to the SSID 'Guest'. For the rest, I am using external dhcp server. - Only one scope for Guest Interface is setup on the WLC.

Problems:
1. As far as I know, for WLC to act as internal dhcp server, it is mandatory to have the proxy enabled, but the Clients connecting to SSID 'Internet' are unable to get an ip address from the external dhcp server, if dhcp proxy is enabled on the WLC. If i disable the proxy, it all works fine.
2. DHCP does not release the ip addresses assigned to clients even after they are logged out.
3. If a machine which was earlier connected to 'Guest' SSID connects to the 'Internet' SSID, it requests the same ip it was assigned by the WLC which it was assigned under 'Guest', but gets tagged with the V LAN configured on the management interface.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Internal DHCP Server

Jul 21, 2012

A client wants us to use the internal DHCP server on a 5508 instead of Windows DHCP. They will have 15 APs initially and upto 25 later. The docs on the 7.2 WLC make it sound like this is discouraged: Internal DHCP Server.

The controllers contain an internal DHCP server. This server is typically used in branch offices that do not already have a DHCP server. The wireless network generally contains 10 access points or fewer, with the access points on the same IP subnet as the controller.

In this case, the APs will not be in the same subnet as the Managment Internet. Is it a mistake to use the internal DHCP with upto 25 APs (3 WLANs)?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Controller And Changing Windows Dhcp Server

Dec 5, 2012

We have a 5508 controller authenticates with WPA2-enterprise to 3 possible AAA servers.  Today I tried migrating our DHCP server from a Windows 2003 machine to Windows 2008 R2.  Migration went smoothly and all wired clients could get IP's.  Reservations intact, scopes intact, etc.. you name it.  I though it was a great success.

Fast forward about an hour when people started coming into work for the day. Calls started coming in about their laptops not able to connect to the network.  I double checked with a spare laptop in our IT department and also my iPhone.  Same issue.  Seems the only thing I changed today was the DHCP server (from 10.1.1.1 to 10.1.1.2).

After racking my head on it for awhile, I re-enabled the "old" dhcp server (10.1.1.1) and disabled it on the new (10.1.1.2).  Instantly wireless clients were able to connect.

Am I missing some configuration step in the 5508 controller when moving DHCP servers?  I do plan on running 2 DHCP servers (10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.10) for redundancy once I get the primary one moved over and working correctly.

I want to decommision the older 2003 server.  Its time to raise the domain functional level.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3550 / 2950 DHCP Relay Option To Router Handing Out DHCP

Apr 3, 2012

Have a client wanting to hand out public ip addresses to all clients from a PFSense Firewall terminating the internet connection.

How do I allow the Cisco Switches currently in place, configured with private ip addresses in the 10.10.x.x ranges and Vlans, where the main 3550 layer 3 has defined dhcp scopes for each vlan, to relay dhcp requests from all vlans to the PFSense firewall?

I assume I would take off the currently defined dhcp scopes for the vlans and configure each vlan/switch with the ip helper address and specify the PFSense firewall and that Nat would have to be disabled onthe firewall?

Cisco Wireless :: 5500 / Dhcp Proxy Option In Controller?

Jul 2, 2012

While configuring a 5500 wireless controller, i came across this option of DHCP proxy under Advanced tab of Controller Option. It asks for the dhcp option 82 remote id format & the dhcp timeout.

1. What is the significance of this & when do we use it?

2. Also, under each wlan ssid that we create, there is an option of dhcp address required under the advanced tab. Do we need to use this option, if we are defining a normal dhcp pool in our controller for that ssid.

Cisco Wireless :: 2504 WLC And DHCP On Separate VLAN

Aug 8, 2012

My problem, in a nutshell, is that clients do not get an IP from an external DHCP server when connected to a guest VLAN.

My current setup is:

Native VLAN 1 (192.168.2.x)
2008 DHCP Servers
2504 WLC

[Code].....

The guest WLAN just uses WPA and a PSK and is set to interface vlan101 There rest of the 2504 config is default.

The ports that the WLC and APs are connected to are tagged on the correct VLANs. (is that even necessary for the AP now?)

Ive changed the interface config around a hundred times now with no luck. No matter what a client will not get an IP.

Could this be due to the 2504 and ASA both acting as DHCP relays? Ive tried setting the IP of the DHCP on the dynamic interface to many different things with no luck.

If I reboot my machine, it is still offline. I've tried the same procedure to reserve the IP address for my phone and it works fine so I wonder if the problem is with Win7.

Cisco :: 5508 Separate RF Group For Every Location

Mar 5, 2012

I'm looking for some input on RRM.  I personally have NOT used it in a LONG TIME, since probably the 4.0 days and then very shortly due to massive issues it was causing and admittedly, in part due to my ignorance at the time.  So, every since that point, I have always set all my channels and power manually but now feel I am getting to some points where RRM may be required / beneficial.  So, I've invested some time and have begun researching and trying to get the ends and outs on it but I'm forseeing a potential issue in myworld anyways and am hoping for some clarification.  Lets take the below example:

-WLC5508a and b - (2 100ap license controllers) - these hold the majority of the AP's for the main hospital.Lets say, 140AP's.

-WLC5508c and d - (1 100ap and 1 50ap licensed controllers) -  These tend to hold our smaller sites and and buildings, not all connected and some a few miles from each other

-WLC4402a and b - (failover ready)

So, with RRM, I can set setting it up on the 5508A/B with out issue as this is one big large building. However, what about C and D?  I suppose I can make them a separate RF Group, but how would RRM respond when it has16 AP's in Building X and then 3 AP's in Building Y 30 AP's in Building Z and sporadic buildings with 1's and 2's?  Everything I've read so far, leads me to believe if these devices are separated it probably won't be an issue, however, I just don't want something causing a change in Building Z and Building X be affected because RRM decided it would try to fix it. My point is, I can't afford to have a separate RF Group (meaning separate controllers) for every location.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: RFC 951 Why DHCP Option Has Magic Cookie

Oct 27, 2011

In RFC 951, the format of BOOTP packet was legislated, but the vendor information was not legislated in this document,  so the authors of this document had described that :"If the 'vend' field is used, it is recommended that a 4 byte 'magic number' be the first item within 'vend'.  This lets a server determine what kind of information it is seeing in this field. "

I think it meant that the format of vendor information wasn't fixed in RFC 951, and any vendor can legislate a new format of vendor information by itself. And the value in "magic cookie" can be set by any vendor. But in RFC 2131, the format of DHCP packet was legislated, and the "magic cooke" was fixed to values 99, 130, 83 and 99, I think it meant that the format of option information in DHCP packet was fixed absolutely and any vendor can't legislate a new format by itself.

Since the format of option information in DHCP packet was fixed absolutely, why the network device needs "magic cookie" to  identify the mode in which the succeeding data is to be interpreted ?  I think the magic cookie is not useful in DHCP packet because the format of option information is fixed. In other words, there is only one format of option information forever.
