Cisco :: Configure NTP Between 6509 And 4948 Switches?
Nov 14, 2011
our 6509 is configured as NTP master. Our 4948 is configured as NTP client.on each of these switches we have configured a management VRF.The problem is that 4948 can not synchronize its clock with NTP master. Both switches are directly connected.show cdp neighbor on 4948 switch:
6K5 Fas 1 138 R S I WS-C6509- Gig 2/2/43
interface config on 6509:
interface GigabitEthernet2/2/43
description *** Mgmt Switch Externe 1 ***
switchport
switchport access vlan 1900
switchport mode access

[code]....
debugs on 6509 do not show any packets received or sent to 4948.

I am planning to install and configure VSS (6509) switches. But the customer requires that the First Switch should be the main and the second Switch should act as a backup one. (Disaster Recovery).
Once the Main (Primary switch) DOWN the Secondary one should coming UP.But what I am understand in VSS concept the two switches will act as one Switch. And both of them will be UP in the same time.
Is there any solution to configure the both VSS switch as primary and standby switch to provide HA?

We want to implement multicast on our network. We are going to use for online teaching purpose. I am very new at Multicast and not have much idea about it. We are not running any routing protocol in our network, only static route. The multicast server is located at One of our office and it is connected with L2 (Cisco 2960) switch, L2 switch is connected to L3 switch(Cisco 4948). L3(Cisco 4948) and Core Switch(Cisco 6509) with FWSM are connected with E-3 link with tunnel. Router 1 and Router 2 are connected with P2P ILL links which are terminated at serial interface. The Multicast Server IP is 192.168.2.131/25. The scenario of our network are mentioned below:
Multicast Server--->(L2 Switch)--->(L3 Switch)--->(Core Switch)--->(FWSM)--->(Router 1)---->(Router 2)--->(L2 Switch)--->(Multicast Client)
We have created a seprate vlan (i.e. vlan 102, interface IP is 192.168.2.129/25) for multicast at L3 switch, enable multicast routing, defined rp-address(i.e. 192.168.2.129/25), enable sparse-dense mode at multicast vlan as well as at some other vlan also for testing purpose and joined multicast group (i.e. Multicast IP is 224.3.3.5). At core switch we have also enabled multicast routing, defined rp-address (i.e. 19.268.2.129/25), enable sparse-dense mode at user vlan and inside vlan of FWSM and joined multicast group at user vlan and inside vlan. At FWSM we have enabled multicast routing, defined rp-address(192.168.2.129), doesn’t find any option to enable sparse-dense mode and joined Multicast group at inside vlan and router 1 vlan. At Router 1, we have configured the same thing. We have configured mroute at all the devices. We are able to ping from end to end. We are testing multicast by Multicast IP checker tool (provided by vendor). Multicast is working fine at L2 switch, L3 switch and Core Switch, but not from Router 1. Ping is reachable from Router 1. After doing mtrace at Router 1, the following output has come:
Router 1 (Mtrace with destination address 192.168.2.131)
mtrace 172.21.15.2 192.168.2.131 224.3.3.5
Type escape sequence to abort.
Mtrace from 172.21.254.50 to 192.168.2.131 via group 224.3.3.5
From source (?) to destination (?)
[Code] .....
If , we do mtrace from gateway IP address(i.e. 192.168.2.129) as destination address then mtrace is getting completed, but if mtrace is done from Mutlicast server IP address(192.168.2.131) as destination address, then mtrace is not getting completed.
We have connected one laptop at Router 1 vlan to test Multicast. The host, which is connected to Router 1 vlan is able to send multicast packet to other host and other host at different vlan are receiving it , but it’s unable to receive multicast packet send by other host of different vlan.
Do I need to enable igmp snooping at L2 switch, L3 switch and Core Switch ? I am not able to understand or can't figure out where i have configured wrong.

So, how to go and what all options we can try ? We are thinking for Ether Channel configuration. Need your expert opinions on the same and if etherchannel configuration is the option then what would be the configuration for the same ?

We've just invested in a pair of Sup2Ts to upgrade a Sup720 6509 chassis but I'm unsure exactly how the management port(s), aka the Connectivity Management Processor (CMP), should be configured (and patched) in a dual supervisor system? Is each CMP an independent entity or is the management interface configuration (IP address, gateway, etc) replicated between supervisors? If it's the latter then do both management ports need to be physically connected at the same time?

I previously put this is the 'Video over IP' discussions group, which is not getting any response.I have a 6509 and need to configure QoS on gig line cards that have 1P3Q8T queue structure. I've already got the mls qos configured, and have the correct class maps built for Voice, Video, and Signalling.(I'm not doing autoqos). I have only four classes; voice, video, signalling, and default (best effort).I need to configure the commands on the individual gig ports for the appropriate bandwidths as shown below:
1. 300 VoIP G711 calls x 100kbs/call = 30mbs of priority queue DSCP = EF (46) CoS = 5
2. 150 Video conference calls x 1.5mbs/call = 225mbs DSCP = CS4 (32) CoS = 4
3. 450 Signalling x 13kps/call = 5.8mbs (round to 6mbs) DSCP = CS3 (24) CoS = 3
4. Default class is not marked DSCP & CoS = 0

Our 6509 has seen better days and we know it's past time to replace it... Question is - go with similar or just use multiple 48 port switches? Then we have old Cisco 2800s in our 9 IDFs that would need updated as well.
We have a mixed environment with about 300 active clients along with about 15 servers and an EMC AX4 over 4GB fibre brocades for backup.

we are using cisco 6509 series switches as core switches. and Cisco 4510,4507 series switches as edge switches. all the vlans are created at core switches and propogating to edge switches through VTP. we are using OSPF as routing protocol at core switch for internal routing. till now we are using 4510,4507 switches as layer 2 switches. Since, 4510 & 4507 switches are hign end swithces i want use them as layer 3 switches instead of layer 2.if i change these switches from layer 2 to layer 3 does it make any impact on our network or better to keep them as layer 2 switches.if i change these switches to layer 3 is there any advantage i will have.

On our backbone (Cisco 6509) we have the following config.
spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst
spanning-tree extend system-id
spanning-tree vlan 1-200 priority 24576
1. is rapid-pvst the best spanning tree protocol to use? on some switches we have pvst (not rapid)
2. do all switches in the LAN need to use the same protocol?
3. does line 3 :priority 24576 mean that someone set tis switch as root manually? how can one further enforce the backbone as root (so noone adds a old switch with lower root id)

I am trying to test (if possible) the idea of having 2 6509-E switches connected directly to each other while using VRF-lite (Sup 2T). The idea is to have 3-4 separate networks. For example Net-A, Net-B,Net-C, Net-D. There is no PE router*, just these two switches. Also, there sin't any other access layer switches. All users connect directly to the 6509-E's via switch 48 port switch blades.
Net-A and Net-B on separate VRF's, but able to talk to each other. Net-C and Net-D* on separate VRF's without being able to talk to any other. Net-D* will have a PE since it comes from an external network. This is something I would like to test in a lab environment, but I am not familiar with VRF's.

I am trying to understand what load balancing method is used on a port channel on a Nexus switch . I have a server connected by a VPC to two Nexus switches. The nexus switches are only acting as layer 2 switches. I have a 6509 connected via a upstream link that does all of the routing for my VLANS. If have a server connected to the Nexus switches and it talks to a server on my 6509 what load balancing happens on the Nexus going across VPC 27 which is a layer 2 trunk going up to my 6509. Is it done on layer 2 or layer 3 flows?
My Nexus shows the default load balancing configurations
Port Channel Load-Balancing Configuration:System: source-dest-ip
Port Channel Load-Balancing Addresses Used Per-Protocol:Non-IP: source-dest-macIP: source-dest-ip source-dest-mac

Is it possible to use two different load balancing methods at each end of a port-channel between two switches?
We have a Cisco 6509 at one end of the port-channel and a Cisco blade switch 3020 at the other end. Right now, we are using "src-dst-ip" at both end of the port-channel. We would like to change this. That is, we would like the #3020 switch to use "src-dst-ip" while the 6509 switch should use the "src-dst-port".
Why we want to do this, the reason is that we have FWSMs on the 6509. I've read that by configuring "src-dst-port" on the 6509, one can get a better performance of traffic going through the FWSM. However, the issue is that the 3020 switch does not support "src-dst-port".

I have FSWM active/standby installed in 6509-E core switches running following FWSM Firewall Version 3.1(3) Device Manager Version 5.0(2)F..I want to upgrade to latest FWSM version as well as ASDM, I downloaded asdm-622f.bin and c6svc-fwm-k9.4-1-5.bin from cisco portal. When i checked the show version of FWSM, it says..The Running Activation Key is not valid, using default settings: Running Activation Key: 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000
I have gone through threads on CSC about how to upgrade FWSM in failover mode, now my concern is, Do i have to take care about activation key or keep as it is ? I have maintenance contract with cisco for all devices.

We are currently designing Layer 3 to the edge EIGRP solution for our customers. The network is a hybrid of collapsed core (Core to access) as well as a three layer design (Core/Distro/Access) for connectivity to the Data Centre, Internet, Wireless Blocks etc.The core of the network contains two 6509-E switches interconnected on a Layer 3 Port channel (no VSS). Access Layer switches (3750-X series running Stackwiseplus protocol) connect to the core switches over p2p routed links and Distribution layer switches (3750X stackwiseplus) provide connectivity to the Data centre, Internet, wireless blocks etc.
The access and distribution switch stacks(Cisco 3750-X) are set up with two or three member switches with uplinks multihomed to the primary and secondary core switch with each uplink included in EIGRP. In each of the stacks, one of the switches controls the operation of the stack, which will be the stack master. As the Cisco Stackwise architecture is not SSO-capable but NSF aware, all Layer 3 fuctions must be re-established during a master switch outage. To minimize control plane impact and improve Layer3 convergence, uplinks should be diverse and originate from the member switches instead of the Master switches in the respective stack. This is as per Cisco recommended design solution. The above solution can be setup if there are more than two switches in the stack. i.e. uplinks are configured on the backup member switch modules.
1.But what about stack with two switches..Which switch should be set up as the Master for a two member stack with uplinks to the core primary and secondary from each switch(Master and Backup)
2. For Layer 3 routing, does the routing takes precedene over switch failures? Say for eg. In a two member stack, the master switch with uplink to primary fails, does EIGRP provide a fast convergence to route traffic via backup secondary and does not wait for the control plane on the switch stack to converge? All the access to core links will be set up for ECMP.

connecting a 5548 pair to our core 6509s. Just want to be sure we don't introduce any issues into the network. The 6509's are connected and perform all the routing. Essentially, we're moving away from a 3750 stack in the data center and the 5548s are the replacement. We'd want to limit the vlans to the specific server network vlans. Our current setup is a port channel between the 3750 and each of the 2 6509s for redundancy. I'd like to use the same functionality when we connect the 5548's but I'm looking for what the config should look like to ensure no spanning tree loops are introduced and that it is configured optimally.
