Dec 7, 2012I have a desktop CPU (without monitor) and a Acer D270 netbook.Desktop CPU has XP (SP3) and Netbook has XP SP3 and Win 7 (Dual boot).I wish to setup a LAN so I can access and view my desktop PC which is morepowerful than my netbook.How do I setup the LAN connection or use remote desktop? I have a lengthy crossover cable ready (2 sided RJ45 cable). Regarding performance, how good will it be. Can I play high quality games? The CPU has NVidia Graphics card.

Dec 5, 2012I am trying to connect CAT5e riser cable to a GE #76536 network and phone wall plate.The problem I am having is the CAT5e cable has 4 twisted pairs of wires as follows: blue/white, green/white, orange/white and brown/white. The wall plate connection has 8 distinct colors; blue, white, green, orange, yellow, black, red and brown. (or at least that's what they look like to me)None of the white wires from the CAT5e cable have any striping. They are all solid white. I've found color charts for matching striped wires, but I am at a loss to figure out how to connect these white wires to the proper terminals

Have a desktop computer running xp which is connected to modem and router...Am running a D-link DSL-502T and Linksys wireless-G broadband Router, model :WRT54G.My issue is i can connect to the wireless network through the laptop but when i switch the wireless switch on the laptop every few minutes the desktop PC will drop the connection and display network cable unplugged, then goes back and fourth connecting and disconnecting every few minutes....as soon as i flick wireless switch off on laptop all is fine again.....wireless works as have another laptop running windows 7 pro and can connect mobile phone through wireless and ipad etc...I have had the internet load web pages but connection doesnt stay on...Does the same thing when i try connecting directly using network cable.

Laptop running 7, desktop running XP Pro. 2 days ago it was working fine. Yesterday it stopped working. I have made no changes that I can think of. All of the folders on the desktop and external drive that I want shared are set up for sharing. So, my question is, what do I need to do to again be able to read and write to these folders, especially the ones on the external hard drive. I believe the adjustment has to be made on the desktop, either in the network connections or the file sharing, but the laptop may need adjusted as well.

Jul 4, 2012I have a LAN port cable, and I have one end connected to the back of my router.Where does the other end go, so I can receive wireless internet connection of both my Toshiba Satellite Laptop, and Gateway Desktop. First I had the LAN port cable connected at the back of my router, and the other end was connected at the back of my desktop. A little green light lit up at the back of my desktop, saying that it was grabbing signal. I could use the internet fine, and my laptop could grab wireless signal fine as well. I was missing around my router, trying to see what mark it was, and the LAN port cable came off, and when I plugged it back in, i couldn't receive signal, and neither could my laptop. Now the only way I can grab signal is by connecting the WAN port cable from my modem to my desktop, which means I cant get wireless signal on my laptop. Now when I do connect my LAN port cable to the back of my desktop, I try connecting to my wireless connection, and when I go to Network and Sharing Center, it says Connected (With full bars).

Jun 30, 2012Just about to run about 30 metres of Ethernet cable underground from one building to another. I know there's quite a few forums like this which suggest to go for cat5 mostly for the price, not sure when these were advised but cat6 doesn't seem to be too much more now...
So just wondering if it will be worth going for cat6 for a future reference if you will, ideally if products ever advance to support it. Just that I don't fancy digging up the cable in a year or so.
Of course I'd rather go for cat5e but wouldn't mind adding a bit to the budget if it's worth it?
Also does anyone know if it's any more difficult to fit the connecters to cat6e? Are they just the same as rj45?

But I don't know if I deleted something that I shouldn't have, or what happened but I am now unable to use my wireless internet. It says that a "network cable is unplugged". May 7, 2012I have a wired desktop PC (HP dx2480) running XP SP3 connected to a LinkSys Wireless 4-port router, and a laptop (Lenovo X61) running XP SP3 connected wireless to the same home network (192.168.0.x). The LinkSys connects by cable to a DSL router for internet access. Both PC and laptop get DHCP IPs from the Linksys (which I have hard-coded - mapped MAC to IP). They are on the same Windows Workgroup "HOME". Both Desktop and Laptop have same Windows User Logins. My desktop had a virus attack (trojan), which I removed and re-installed XP SP3 (from HP disks). Since then the PC seems to have "network sharing and discovery issues" on the network.
- The wired PC CAN ping the laptop, but laptop CANNOT ping PC.
- Both laptop and PC CAN access the internet.
- The laptop and PC COULD NOT see each other on Windows Workgroup, or see shares. This got resolved once I added IPX/SPX/NetBios Protocol on both the wired and wireless NICs on both PC/laptop respectively. NOTE: Before adding this protocol, I double-checked that File-Printer Sharing was enabled on both NICs, Windows Firewall had File-Print Sharing as exclusion. I tried everything including disabling firewall on both, disabling McAfee scanning on both, disabling Firewall on Linksys, but nothing worked.
- The laptop CAN see the NAS (Seagate GoFlexHome - connected by cable to LinkSys) using Seagate Dashboard software and direct IP. The PC CANNOT access the NAS using the Dashboard software but CAN access through direct IP. The NAS is named "goflex_home", which both can discover as \goflex_home from explorer.
- The laptop CAN see ITunes Home Share from a NAS, but the PC CANNOT see any home shares on the NAS (or from the laptop). I even added Home Sharing TCP/UDP ports as exceptions on the Firewall on the PC, but it still doesn't work.
- Some blog checking the node type on IP addresses given by DHCP. The laptop has Node Type "Hybrid", and the PC has "Unknown". I even went to PC regedit.exe and modified the and Change EnableProxy to 0 or 1 (instead of 2 that was in the PC as default).
- I have used SG TCPOptimizer on both laptop and PC to revert to Windows default?
Linksys Wireless Router :: 2 E4200s On Same Network Connected Via Cable?
Mar 28, 2012I used to have this exact setup with 2 wrt610ns i believe was the model number, i have one at my house, connected to my dsl, and then another in my "man cave" connected by a approximately 250 foot buried outdoor cat6 cable, inside of conduit of course. Last week both routers along with my modem were fried during a storm, so now i rebuilt the network with 2 e4200s, i hooked everything up and b4 i even had a chance to set my network up like i had to do b4 (a 192.168.10.1 subnet in the mancave) everything was already getting internet, however i cannot access the web based setup for the 2nd router (mancave) the dhcp client table shows it with an address of 192.168.1.139. even if i disconnect, reset the 2nd router and set it up on a 192.168.10.1 address as soon as i connect it to the main router, it goes right back to the .1.139 ip address. the only problem i have with this is that i would like to have the freedom to change my wifi passwords or edit other settings on my network without having to disconnect from the main router everytime, assuming that will work and i wont have to do a hard reset in order to get the router back to a default ip. the cable connecting the 2 routers goes from a lan port on the 1st router to the internet port on the 2nd.
