Put A Cat5e / 6 Cable Between Two Client PC's For A Temporary Boost In Speed?

Jun 26, 2011

Currently have wireless router to internet with pc's all connected in home network. Is it possible to put a cat5e/6 cable between two client PC's for a temporary boost in speed for for accessing shared files between these two machines.(i.e. 1Gbit rather than 56Mbit.)Both PC's would still want individual connections to the router and internet, but how do you make sure accessing shared files goe's through the faster ethernet cable rather than the router?

How To Boost Broadband Speed

Sep 21, 2011

Im on BT broadband, and have 2 phonelines in my house. the broadband was on phoneline A. However, to save money we shut down phoneline A and switched to phoneline B. However, the signal quality on B has dropped like a stone. The Downstream speeds are normal, but the download speed is 0.24, compared to the 2.05 it was before.
Yesterday i rang BT to tell about the problem, and after 30 minutes of 'checking' they decided to put our broadband on a higher profile? and reassured me that this would sort our problem. Our downstream speeds now read 0.13. Its made the problem a lot worse.

Belkin Cat5e Network Cable Won't Work

Cat5e Or Cat6 Cable For Outdoors / Underground Use?

Jun 30, 2012

Just about to run about 30 metres of Ethernet cable underground from one building to another. I know there's quite a few forums like this which suggest to go for cat5 mostly for the price, not sure when these were advised but cat6 doesn't seem to be too much more now...

So just wondering if it will be worth going for cat6 for a future reference if you will, ideally if products ever advance to support it. Just that I don't fancy digging up the cable in a year or so.

Of course I'd rather go for cat5e but wouldn't mind adding a bit to the budget if it's worth it?

Also does anyone know if it's any more difficult to fit the connecters to cat6e? Are they just the same as rj45?

Dec 5, 2012

I am trying to connect CAT5e riser cable to a GE #76536 network and phone wall plate. The problem I am having is the CAT5e cable has 4 twisted pairs of wires as follows: blue/white, green/white, orange/white and brown/white. The wall plate connection has 8 distinct colors; blue, white, green, orange, yellow, black, red and brown. (or at least that's what they look like to me)None of the white wires from the CAT5e cable have any striping. They are all solid white. I've found color charts for matching striped wires, but I am at a loss to figure out how to connect these white wires to the proper terminals

Routers / Switches :: Temporary Lab Setup 1 Network Port 8 PC's

Mar 21, 2011

We recently moved 8 pc's from a room where they each had port on the switch to a room where there is only one port for all of them. I setup a DLINK DIR632 Router in there and they connect thru the one port thru the switch to the gateway which gets them out to the internet. The problems is I need to be able to remote desktop into these 8 PC's and I need them to be able to print to the network printer. I am using a Linksys WRT54G Broadband router as the gateway connecting the switch to the internet. The DLINK's dhcp server is on for the 8 PC's. The Linksys' dhcp server shows the DLINK as IP on the network.I know I have to use advanced routing settings but I'm not sure about how what to make the subnet mask and IP's on both routers. I believe I need to turn off the dhcp server on the DLINK and have the Linksys' dhcp server serve all of the PC's but I'm not sure if thats the best way or if its possible.. I don't want to hack out fix only to find it breaks 3 days later.I used to do this stuff all day long in the 90's but its been a while and to me its like calculus.

internet sharing works ok, but when im trying to play any game on LAN wireless clients can see them self but not the wired one. when im trying to ping wireless client from a wired machine it doesn't work either.
what's intresting in a DHCP reservation or ARP table (in router setup) i can see both wired and wireless clients. but still they can not see each other.

Cox Cable High Speed Internet / Frequent Disconnects?

Mar 27, 2012

The modem checked out and was all good, the splitters are brand new and the line is apparently fine. This left the router as the issue. We had a Netgear router and attempted to replace it with a Linksys router. The firmware on both routers have been tested both old and new firmware. This happens to all computers/laptops connect to the network I do not receive a message stating that I was disconnected from the network, the internet simple cuts out for a little while and then comes back in.Cox says that they are 100% certain it is not on their end, nor is it the modem. The disconnects occur at random (there is no specific intervals). They last anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.
