Connecting Laptop And Netbook With A Crossover Cable?
Aug 30, 2012
I have been trying to connect my laptop (Windows Vista) and my netbook (Windows 7) with a crossover cable, and I have followed every single step of the instructions I have found on the net, including disabling Windows firewall, but it won't do it and when I try to ping the failure seems to be when the netbook tries to ping the laptop (100% loss).

I tried to bridge two wireless routers wirelessly, but after extensive research I came to the conclusion that this wasn't possible.
Now I am trying to connect these two routers through a cat5 cross-over cable and I wanted to know whether can I disable DHCP on the router which has internet, and enable the DHCP of the router which is connected to the printers, because I have a few systems that shouldn't be connected to the internet.
What I had in mind is if I switch the DHCP OFF on the internet router and turn it ON on the Huawei B683 router, I could add those devices' MAC addresses to the internet gateway router to deny them access to the internet..?

Here is my current setup.I have a desktop CPU (without monitor) and a Acer D270 netbook.Desktop CPU has XP (SP3) and Netbook has XP SP3 and Win 7 (Dual boot).I wish to setup a LAN so I can access and view my desktop PC which is more powerful than my netbook. How do I setup the LAN connection or use remote desktop? I have a lengthy crossover cable ready (2 sided RJ45 cable). A detailed description so I can follow the procedure to setup at my place. Regarding performance, how good will it be. The CPU has NVidia Graphics card.

I want to directly connect two Win XP machines together to transfer large files. Both have "Gigabit Ethernet".Its been years since I last did this, and used to need a special cable called a crossover cable to accomplish this, but reading up to refresh my memory I believe I no longer need the special cable, but can use the cable that now connects my cable modem to my computer, as the Gigabit specification eliminates the need for a crossover cable.

my laptop has a very annoying habit of disconnecting from the internet, on annoying ass random occasions, the network dropped. When my laptop connected back to the internet again, my pc now says that there is no internet access coming from the cable. I have reset both my laptop and my pc, the router and changed cables. I have also enabled NETBios with TCP on both computers, but nothing.

I'm trying to run a CAT6 cable from my router to my PS3 in the living room downstairs. It has to make several connections along the way. I've done something wrong, because I'm not getting a signal at the last outlet, and now I'm wondering if one of these legs needed to be wired for crossover, not pass-through.

I just got done running CAT 6 wire's into different rooms and placing jacks on the wall which all works correcting going into the patch panel. The problem I am having is that the Access Points on the ceiling I decided to make it a little easier and use regular network cable and cut one end off and place it into the patch panel the same way as all the jacks. The AP's are POE and they are just not getting on the network. Do I need to do something different for this cable? The way I punched all the wall jacks and all the cables to the patch panel is by using section B on the jack so because of me cutting a cable and leaving one end on, should I use A or is there something else I should do?

I'm trying to connect my two computer (XP and Win 7) using a crossover cable. I set the the IP as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.The computers can see each each other and I can access the public folder of the win7-machine on my XP-machine. However, if I try accessing the xp-machine it says:
Quote: You don't have permission to access \PC. Contact your network administrator to request access.
Both computers can ping each other without problems.I've tried rebooting the computers, plugging the cable out and back in again, turn Internet (wifi) off but it doesn't work. Also, the File and Printer Sharing is enabled, too. Disabling the firewalls won't work and I deactivated the user/pass login so there is no password needed.

After trying to communicate between an XP machine and Win7 using static IP and a crossover cable my wireless card stopped working. I did make the mistake of trying Homegroups prior to that.
It says Unidentified network and constantly remains in the Public Profile. Not even WiFi Sync is working...diagnostics reveal a problem with the drivers though several have been tried. From the originals to the latest version...Properties describe the device is working normally?

Seems Windows cannot get any ip address from the router. The router works fine with wired Ethernet devices and my iPhone when i connect it wirelessly.

how to setup and connect two RV082 routers together with a crossover cable between their WAN ports. This is to connect two separate LANS together via an ethernet connection. For staging we are setting everything up with a crossover cable in our shop. Ultimately the crossover cable will be replaced by a microwave link between the two LANS several miles apart. There will be no internet connection.

I have a Compag Netbook (running Windows XP Home Edition) which will not connect to the internet, however the wireless icon in the tray is telling me that the signal strength is good and that i am connected but i cannot access any webpage. I know it is probably not the modem as we have another netbook in the house which connects no problem, as does our laptop so i'm figuring its something to do with the Compaq netbook??
I've had a look at some of the other queries regarding this on the site and note that you recommend 'ipconfig /all' results so you can gain a better understanding of what the problem might be, so here it is below
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name: Compaq-38184c6a
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Unknown

I recenlty bought an E2500 router. I was able to connect 4 of our laptops at home just fine. But when I tried to connect my Acer One netbook, the "Cisco Connect" loaded up to 25% & then I couldn't connect to the internet. I've contacted Tech Support & they suggested downloading the latest wireless adapter driver. I contacted Acer & they said it sounded like a security issue on my netbook. I was out of warranty so they'd have to charge $150 for tech support.

after installing Windows 7 Professional on my netbook, there has been a problem. I think it may be a problem with the wireless card or something..?
But anyway, before I had Professional, I had Starter, and that worked perfectly with the wireless internet. Now, however, I can only connect through ethernet. I know it is definitely a problem with my netbook, as before, the netbook could recognize all the routers, etc., on the street, and now it can't even recognize the router right next to me. Also, my phone is able to connect to my router perfectly fine...
I am running a Samsung N130 Netbook with Windows 7 Professional (x86), I bought the netbook at around November 2010 .

I'm currently training at a PC store.Me and this other guy are trying to figure out some networking. So far we've file shared 2 PCs with 1 crossover cable. Now we're trying to figure out how to do this with 3 PCs and NO hub, switch, router, etc.I have my theory and he has his.
His theory: One of the computers need an ethernet card so 2 crossover cables can be plugged into it.(The MOBOs only have one port to plug in Cat5s)
My theory: Cut 2 crossover cables in half. And put the three ends together so the wires are touching each other, then tape it. For example green to green to green, orange to orange to orange, etc. Here's an example picture: Now I know my theory would work with audio but me co-trainee isn't so sure if it will work with networking.

As per the image, is it possible to have dedicated nics between two PCs via a crossover for data transfer/remote access, while still having another nic to access a network for internet, and other systems? The reason I ask is that, it would be very convenient to be able to run backups without having my internet running for some reasons I would rather not go into detail about.
